Winning Strategies for the competitive runner are not as simple as they sound. In fact many things go into a competitive athleteâs plans to reach the pinnacle of their chosen sport and in running it is no different. There are special considerations for training shoes, running gear and racing flats. There are tactics and race strategies to consider. There are training strategies, season peaking and workout stretching to prevent injury. Then there is the diet needed to win and reach your top performance too.
Most of all to win in a foot race, a runner must be mentally tough and able to perform at optimum level and have the strength of character and perseverance to see it thru to the tape at the end of the race.
Methods to Increase Maximal Speed for Endurance
Hill Sprints
These are great for building leg strength and running power. Find a hill with a moderate incline and sprint straight up for about 60 meters, then loop back down for recovery.
Stadium Stairs
Use these as speed training, not a death march! Sprint up, walk down. Repeat.
Diminishing Rest
Divide the race distance up into 3-5 chunks. Run the first period as hard as possible and then recover for half the time it took to run the period. Example: 7 minute mile, 3.5 minute rest. Repeat for all periods, until the entire distance is covered. Each week, cut the rest interval by 30 seconds.
Fartlek Training
Over a certain time, alternate sprinting with slower running, going by feel.
Resisted Running Perform sprints while dragging a tire or light sled.
Increase Upper Body Strength
This is overlooked by most endurance athletes. Improving strength can certainly be done without adding bulk, and will create better posture, running mechanics, and power transfer.

Vibram 5 finger shoe information, are there any others like them, ect.?
UW Badger
I recently bought a pair of vibram shoes. Bikila's. My dad is now interested, are there any other companies out there that make similar shoes? If so what company and how can I get them. Another question, what is the recomended use for these shoes? What types of sports/activities? Are they dependable? Any major problems? How long do they last? Thanks for all your help!
Answer
The fivefingers are good for hiking, jogging, gym, swimming, or just everyday walking. I wouldn't run a marathon in them though.
Each models of the Vibram Shoes have specific characteristics. Why not take a look at this top 10 Vibram shoes information. They talked about the Bikila ones too.
