Why do I have foot pain, and how can I prevent/treat it?

Eugene

Hi,

I am a runner, and have been running the past few months. I run once or twice a week, and in the past two months have been increasing my long run. Each week I try to increase my long run two miles, going from 5 to 7 to 9 to 11 to 13. I have no problem with stamina, but recently (with the 1 mile and 13 mile runs) I have had terrible sharp pains in the outside of my feet. This occurs at about mile 7, and has only been occurring recently. Regular foot fatigue was normal for me, but this sharp pain is relatively new. It seems to hurt every time I step, especially when the road is not flat (ie downhill, uphill, or banked to the right or left). Strangely, I have concluded that this pain is more distinct when I run slower and less when I run quicker. For these long runs, I average about 5 miles per hour, relatively slow. I am wondering if I am over training, or if because I am running slower, there is a greater time that my weight pressures my foot. I have no history of being flat footed or having a high arch. This pain persists a very long time, about 5 or 6 days, until I can walk normally, without a somewhat limp. After resting a week, my feet were completely healed and I tried running 13 miles but the pain returned after a few miles and progressively became sharper. I could only run 9 miles, and by the end I was barely able to stand up because of the pain. I have looked online about it and could guess that I have Peroneal Tendonitis because there is little swelling/redness and I have have past ankle sprains. I have heard that wearing heal lifts are helpful, but am unsure of its effectiveness. I would really like to resolve this issue by preventing and treating it, so I can focus on my running, pain free. So please suggest prevention and treatment techniques, other than RICE. Please let me know if you need additional information.

Thank You,

Eugene
Additionally, I have Saucony running shoes that I got a few months ago. I admit they were cheap, only $30, perhaps this is part of the issue.

Answer
Hey have your tried athletic comfort shoes from http://www.drewshoe.com ? Athletic comfort shoes are design for people with similar situations that you are experiencing. Athletic comfort shoes will ventalize, soothe and comfort your feet much better then your normal running shoes.

What's up with this feeling in my foot (continued) Thanks for advice?

Well, the feeling is right below the ankle, kind of where that lumpy muscle or whatever it is stands out, which looks almost like a second ankle, there and right below it to the bottom of the foot.

It's where Peroneal Tendonitis occurs, and i wonder if that's what I even have.

I noticed when I rested it on that side, the outside of my right foot, it felt spongy inside.
It feels like there's a piece of tape on my foot coming off or stuck when I roll it forward too.

I think a lot of it had to do with the shoes, which were hand me downs, and that I run on uneven, tilted surfaces.

Answer
Yeah, it is called an inflamed tendon or sprained tendon. It will hurt until it heals and that can be a while because even if you are not training, you walk around putting pressure on it. I suggest RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation), also an over the counter anti-inflammatory.

See a doctor if you can before that 'piece of tape on your foot coming off' feeling becomes a 'piece of tape on your foot came off' feeling. And I agree that it probably had a lot to do with the shoes, which were hand me downs, and that you run on uneven, tilted surfaces.

Chris

Hello i leave for boot camp in 2 weeks and i have a medical question I dont want to ask my recruiter. I sorta found out on my own i have Peroneal Tendonitis. A pain in the outer middle right foot. I discovered this by running for 3 days. Ive always had this problem which is why i dont run too often. I found some shoe inserts that can curve this problem. My question is .. will the medical staff at boot camp provide me with inserts so i can avoid this agonizing pain or will i be Medically Discharged like so many ppl are these days. WHAT should i do ???
Additional details: based on the replies im getting the one that im most curious about is can I or can I not bring some sort of shoe insert? That would solve all problems.

Answer
You should be honest. You ahve an existing medical condition that you either did not know about or chose to fail to disclose. Either way, when it is discovered, and it will be do not think you will get away with it, you will be discharged. At which point they can make you pay for your flights to and from boot camp, any medical costs you incurred and they can possibly prosecute you with a fraudulent enlistment.

So... what do you think you should do????? I would man up and tell the truth. Any pain you are in and slowing down the training, you are going to rain that much pain on your fellow shippers. They will not appreciate that. You can bring inserts, sure. You can bring your IPOD, too... doesn't mean they will allow you to keep it with your gear while in boot camp.

achilles tendonitis misdiagnosis?

Lauren

I first got diagnosed with peroneal tendonitis, my PT made me insoles with a raised heel. I stopped running and then started having pain in my achilles area. I thought it was achilles tendonitis so I started wearing extra heel lifts. The pain has only gotten worse. I am starting to think it is not achilles tendonitis because a lot of the symptoms do not match. It is never stiff in the mourning and almost every article I read about it says it will be stiff in the mourning. Do you think it developed as a result of the raised heel??

Answer
Hello,

First of all I am sorry that you still have this pain, it must be frustrating.

Yes, it is possible that you were misdiagnosed, nobody is perfect. It could be a different condition but you did not provide any background.

Please answer these questions to help diagnose you better.

1) Which part of the heel hurts the most (back/bottom)?
2) Do you have high or low arches?
3) What kind of shoes you usually wear?
4) Do you see any bruising or swelling?
5) Is it more painful first thing in the morning?
6) Is it painful to the touch?
7) Are you active in sports?
8) What kind of shoes you usually wear?
9) What caused the initial injury?

Here are a few things you can do right now:

1) Ice your heel at least 4 times a day, either by applying ice directly or by rolling a frozen bottle under your heel and arch when you sit down.

2) Wrap it up with an ace bandage.

3) Elevate your foot and rest as much as you can.

Again, if you can answer my questions I would be happy to assist you further.
You can write to me directly if you prefer, my email is in my Yahoo profile or itaiw@yahoo.com

Feel Better!
