What would be the proper attire for a week in NYC the first week of December?

pinguna12

My best friend and I are visiting NYC for the first time the first week of December. I have lived in South Florida my entire life and have never traveled to cold weather. What shoes do you recommend(I am planning on taking sneakers for walking and some boots for the night)? How many jackets and sweaters should I pack? Do you recommend buying a winter coat or would a really simple leather jacket and layering sweaters be enough?

Answer
I recommend that you buy a down jacket or a winter coat. Especially since you are not used to cold weather. Don't forget warm gloves, a scarf, a hat. Bring warm underwear if you have any - you know, leggings to wear under you pants or someting like that.

I'm not so convinced of the "sneakers". You need shoes that are large enough so you can fit in two or three pairs of socks, and they also need a profile, because you will probably find snow and ice. That's why I'm not so convinced of the sneakers. You'll probably just slip on the snow/ice because the sole doesn't have any profile.

Pack two or three warm sweaters, and a couple of long-sleeved shirts to wear underneath.

I remember being in New York in December, and it was so cold! You know, there is nothing to break the wind, because all the houses are aligned in squares. So there's just this cold wind blasting through the streets.

What are some good running shoes for men?

LeGeNd

I need some good running shoes that are durable on any terrain and are comfy.
I'm not going to use them very often, perhaps 3 times a week.
Any ideas for good shoes.
All answers are appreciated

Answer
The best answer to this totally depends on your running gait. You need to know if you pronate, underpronate/suppinate or are a neutral runner before buying shoes. If you don't know go to a running store and ask them to analyse your tread - the good shops will have a machine to do this and will not charge you. Listen to advice from a shop assistant who runs and is trained in the shoe models (not a weekend fill-in!). Visit somewhere like www.runnersworld.co.uk and read reviews on shoes that meet your needs. Try a few pairs on to see how they fit around your toes and heel before buying any. Taking this well-researched path will reduce any chance of injury to your legs/hips/back by running in the wrong shoes. Best of luck!

It's definitely time for a new running shoe (the Nike pair i run in now is almost 4yrs old and i get knee injuries and hurt feet). I want a good shoe to prepare myself in for marathon training!
The Nike Run unfortunately comes with a velcro strap for my size and I really wanted it, but the velcro strap isn't for me.
I heard Asics and Mizunos were pretty good running shoes and i was wondering if there were any others people would recommend.

Is there a difference in style between kids and womens TOMS?

Henrietta

I wear a size 5 or 5.5 in shoes and the price of kids TOMS is cheaper than the adult ones. But i dont want to buy them if you can tell a difference.. So is there a difference??? Im looking to buy just classic toms. Thanks!

Answer
Hi there,

There's actually an overlap between youth and women's sizing! When ordering a youth style, we suggest ordering down 2 sizes. For example, a women's 6 is a youth 4. Please keep in mind that the youth styles do run a little bit wider than the women's.

Best,

Why is the forefoot area of my running shoes always wearing out so quick?

I don't run - I walk - but I prefer to wear running shoes instead of walking shoes. The sole of my shoes where the ball of my foot would be ALWAYS wears out quickly, it seems to me.I wear name brand shoes(Brooks, Saucony, Asics, etc.), but usually models in the under $70 price range. Might this have something to do with my gait? I underpronate, and also the ball of my foot often cramps. Might a certain orthotic help prevent this uneven wearing out?

Answer
Check to see if your foot (and shoe) are sliding forward as your foot comes down. If so, that would wear out the ball of the shoe area. Many runners do this on the heel, but I have one friend who wears her shoes like you do. If you look very closely at the bottom of your shoe in the worn area, you might be able to see the direction in which individual scratch marks were made. If you see marks that start towards the front of the shoe and end towards the back, your shoe is still moving forward when your foot touches down. In effect, your shoes slides a little forward with each step before fully contacting the pavement. It does have everything to do with your gait. It has nothing to do with pronation per se. If you are a woman and wear heels, the problem could be a shortened Achilles tendon (rear of the heel up to the ankle). If so, the fix would be to gradually stretch the Achilles tendon to lengthen it or to see a physical therapist who could show you the exercises to do. There are stretches and videos online. DO NOT OVERSTRETCH. You run the risk of tearing the tendon. It will take several months to fix this, if this is in fact the problem.

How many miles should you get out of a good pair of shoes?

Stunatra

How long should a good pair of shoes last if you walk 2-3 miles almost every day?

Answer
To be honest, it depends on a number of things. Your foot placement as you land (pronation, etc), brand, and training schedule. As for your training schedule, if you do a lot of hill workouts or run mucky conditions, they shoe will wear faster. If you pronate, you spread your weight unevenly to the different areas of your shoe, hence different parts will wear faster than others. In your case, since you are walking, your shoes will last forever (if thats the only thing your doing with them). I would say at least 1 year or 15 months.

I've worn flat shoes pretty much my whole life, converse, vans, and DC, I know I shouldn't. I want to start running but I know my DC shoes will just cause me pain when I run. I have really high arch's and cannot find running shoes under $100 online. My town only has a Walmart and shoe sensation so I will probably have to buy them online. When searching online most stores do not give the option to choose arch support so how do I know it has it? Are there specific brands that are known for arch support? Will I even find any shoes less than say $75 with these specifications?

Answer
Best comfort shoes for women for under $100-Merrell is far and away the most comfortable shoe you will ever wear on a daily basis.

I walked into my local plant store the other day and was just looking around when I noticed these interesting-looking shoes on one of the helpers. He said they were Merrells. I should have known. I have seen them on orderlies and doctors at the hospital. My internist was wearing a pair of the casual Merrells.

It seems that everyone's wearing these wonderful shoes, and for good reason. They are designed so well to meet the ordinary stresses of walking and standing.

About twenty years ago, almost the same scenario happened with Birkenstock. People all of a sudden had "discovered" them and you saw these shoes everywhere. Likewise, with Rockports and Eccos. So - do these brands just go through fads only to be replaced with newer fads? I don't really think so because I do still see these other brands all the time even though it seems that people might be buying and wearing the "newer" brands exclusively. I know that I bought Rockports for my son when he was a teenager because I knew how tough they were and how comfortable.

I looked into these more popular shoes worn by people who are on their feet a lot and found some details on these good, solid brands which have emphasized comfort for many years.

Rocport, Timberland, Ecco, and Easy Spirit are all time favorites. All of these as well as the currently popular Merrell offer high comfort and value at less than $100. Each brand has similarities: There are more styles which might cost more than $100, but each of these companies offers a tremendous selection of shoes for well under $100, and all have online sales as well. A real bonus is that many do not even charge for shipping, which can save you even more money.

Anybody know how to develop strong legs for vertical leap and what's a good basketball shoe to get?

Im 5'11 and 14 years old. I want to make Varsity and I can touch rim. I have a long structure with a big wingspan. When I jump I use running shoes. Also do Concept shoes really Work?(APL) or other brands such as Joran,Adidas,NIke,Reebok?

Answer
For shoes just get anything that is light weight and comfortable. Personally I prefer hyperdunks or D-roses. I very fast and quick so these shoes are good. When it comes to playing basketball just stick o Nike man.

Increasing your vertical comes down to about 4 main points

1) Lose any extra body fat you might have, this fat is what i call anchor fat because it holds you down.

2) Eat healthy and drink a lot of water, if your urine is not crystal clear than you are not drinking enough water.

3) Fix your broken jumping technique

4) Learn the CORRECT exercises to do and HOW to do them. The how part is crucial because you can do squats or calf raises all you want but if you do not do it the correct way than you will actually hurt your vertical.

Heres another tip, the THREE MAIN muscles that help you jump higher are your glutes, your hamstring and your lower back.

Utilize all 4 points and you'll increase your vertical

go to this site and click the link on the how to jump higher article, itll take you to a video with MORE info.

What recommendations do you have for ballroom shoes?

ToInspire

I want to buy my first ballroom shoes and I wanted some recommendations about shoes. What heel size is best for dancing, open or closed toe, single or multiple straps, etc. I want comfortable shoes where I'm not sliding around in them. Any recommendations?

Answer
Get your regular shoe size. They should feel very snug, like a glove. You adjust the straps for a more secure fit.
If you're a beginner, a lower heel would probably be a good way to start. A 1.3 inch is good. I wouldn't go higher than 2 inches.

Shoes come with low, squared heel, standard heels, and also flared heels. Heel types can depend on the style you'll be dancing. If you're dancing West Coast swing, for example, you'll want a low, squared heel, open toe shoe. If you're dancing smooth dances (like waltz) you'll probably prefer a closed toe with about a 2 inch heel. Latin shoes are usually open toe, regular heel and much "strappier" looking.

If you're a beginner and/or learning a range of dances, then just pick a style you like best. My former instructor discouraged beginning women dancers from wearing open-toe shoes for their own safety because they were dancing with beginning men, who had a tendency to step on toes.

Some of the best mid-priced shoes are made by Very Fine and GoGo Dance. They tend to run under $60 a pair. With proper care, they can last quite a long time, though you'll want to replace them when they get stretch out and no longer give you that glove-like fit. There are pricier lines, but I suggest you wait until you know what shoe style suits you before spending big bucks.

My everyday go-to shoe is made by Stephanie Dance Shoes GoGo Dance division. They're peep toe, with a 1.3" heel. They give me the best of all worlds-- a slender, low heel (feminine), rather than a fat Cuban heel. Peep toe, which is more comfortable for me than closed, yet my feet don't slide over the edge as they would with open toe. The low heel is elegant enough to work for smooth dances, yet because it's low, I can do West Coast Swing with ease. They're a t-strap so they have a little strappiness going on.

What is a good, yet cheap camera flash for my canon rebel 2ti?

best running shoes under 100 dollars image

Lt. Riley

I'm looking for a good flash for my camera but I am on a budget so I can't really afford one of the expensive canon flashes. Looking for hopefully something that is not past around 50 dollars. Also I am not really taking professional pictures, so I really DON'T need an expensive one.

Answer
Not much to spend, but still it should be enough.

Ebay is your friend here. A brand called Yongnuo (yes, it's Chinese all the way) sells a flash model YN-460 that is well under $50, yet perfectly capable for most uses. It is a fully manual flash, so you will have to take that into account and use your camera in manual mode when shooting flash.

If you would like a little help from the flash, you can get a brand new Vivitar 285HV for somewhere between $80 and $90. This is an auto thyristor flash unit. It has a sensor in the flash that can control the amount of light emitted. You still have to shoot in manual mode, but the flash helps you get the exposure right.

The least expensive flash (worth buying) with full E-TTL control is going to run you just over $100. The Metz 36 series. Not terribly powerful, but enough for most folks that aren't trying to light up cavernous rooms.

You can also find bargains in the used market for good old Sunpak or Metz handle mounts. Something like my Sunpak 522 Auto runs less than $50 in working condition. More powerful than most of the shoe mount models, auto thyristor control, generally good stuff. There are also used shoe mounts out there, even cheaper. I would prefer to actually get my hands on a flash before I bought it for testing purposes.

A place like http://www.keh.com is a good place to find old flash units in (tested) working condition. You won't find a Canon E-TTL model for your price, but there are plenty of auto units that will work just fine on there.

What is the shoe of choice for professional freerunners?

GhostShrim

This one is for those that "Free Run" or preform the act called "Parkour."

A lot of this sport involves speed, strength, timing and to an extreme degree grip and friction. So, what shoe brand or specific style would you declare the best shoe to choose to this sport?

*Be specific and Detailed in your response

Answer
It mostly depends on what you're usually running into when you're training and such. For one, you don't want anything that has a thick sole. You want to for your feet to feel as un-impaired as possible: touch, comfort, lightness, and sensitivity are important. Most of the popular models for this accomplish this task, and you can disregard grip to some degree in exchange for this. It doesn't matter if the sole is inches thick and if it's got springs in it for landings, either way the impact is still there. In fact, thiner soles would allow you to be better able to use the muscles in your feet to better disperse the landing impact.

Next is grip. For that, you want a relatively flat sole. No complicated tread is needed, it won't help with grip and will wear away anyways. Surface area is the key here.
Next issue is sole material. You'll probably hear about how Five-ten and aproach shoes are so great. They fit all of the above, and they've got killer grip... on rough surfaces. It's on smooth surfaces where climbing shoe rubber hopelessly fails. If you don't do many railing spots for training, then these aren't a bad way to go, only that they are a little too good on wallruns. Otherwise, stay away from these kinds of shoes. The freerunner V2 (by 5.10) is said to have fixed this problem, but they won't have all the sensitivity and flexibility mentioned above. Versatility is important in parkour.

Last is price and durability. Are the shoe's durability and their price worth it? 5.10 shoes cost a lot, but what's nice about them is that when the sole wears, you can get them resoled. On the other hand, take any regular nike shoe model. Sure, it's light, and the inch-high heel is comortable, and it even has springs in it, but you can't feel anything under you, the grip probably isn't any good, the fancy multi-pieced sole is likely to fall appart after a bit of wallrun abuse, and it'll cost you a good 60 dollars. And then you take something like the Feiyue. This Chinese-made shoe was originally intended as a bit of a "shaolin sneaker". It's almost a pk/fr work of art. It's sole is so thin you can sometimes even tell the difference between what kind of surface is under you. It's super light, and the materials (canavas and soft rubber) are so flexible, and it's sole grips well on just about anything as long as it isn't too dusty. The one problem is that the soft rubber used in the sole, while it's all one piece, wears away easily, so you can't do too many wallruns on it. The good news is that it won't cost you more than 20 dollars (originally less than 15, and then around $5 are added because of import costs). Availability is tricky. A local martial arts shop might have them.

Another few models to consider are:
K-swiss Ariakes- Parkour specific model by K-swiss. Most people who get them like them, but the sole looks a little thick on the back. You're gonna have to order these, I doubt you'll find them in a shop near you. They also cost around 100.
Asics Tiger Onitsuka- There are different submodels for this, but the sole is thin compared to others, especially the Mexico 66 model, although the Ultimate 81 is the more popular one. If you have a Journey's near you, this shoe has the best availability. Price may be at around 40 or 80 (depending how well they sell near you), but either way, people say they're worth it.
Nike Dart- Very popular. I don't hear any complaints about price, but since this isn't a "newest technology" shoe, availability may be a problem. Sole thickness is reasonable (I hear), and grip is pretty good.
Inov-8 PK- Inov-8 has two different parkour-specific models, and a few others that work just as well. They're the closest to any regular running shoe you may have, but they're a little pricey, and not easily available, although I know of a shop nearby that carried them at one time.
