acai berry and beri ultimate has anyone tried these and do they work?

thanks to anyone with any info on this .

Answer
They don't work and neither do any other supplements.

The acai berry has no special properties and has nothing to do with fat loss. The myth began when a doctor, Dr. Mehmet Oz, from Columbia Uni mentioned the berry on the Oprah show and supplements makers, being the scammers they are, began promoting products using acai as having beneficial properties they don't have often invoking the names of Oprah an Dr. Oz. Oprah and Oz filed suit against many supplements makets and the acai myth was born. Go here to read about it --> http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=8369105 Consumers, being credulous and ignorant of how supplements scammers bilk the public, began repeating and propagating the myth to the point of it becoming a global meme.

Here's an example of how scammers have created fake news websites just to sell acai junk to credulous web surfers. Ref: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2011/04/fakenews.shtm
Note the excerpt: "FTC Seeks to Halt 10 Operators of Fake News Sites from Making Deceptive Claims About Acai Berry Weight Loss Products. Internet Marketers Falsely Claim Endorsement from ABC, Fox News, CBS, CNN, USA Today, and Consumer Reports, FTC Alleges"

Here's an complaint forum about Acai Fit. Ref: http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/acai-fit-c212046.html
Note the excerpt: "Ordered Acai-Fit weight loss pills online. They advertise Free Trial for 1 month if you just pay shipping. Sounds good but you are billed $74.82 after 14 days of using the product! This is completely nonrefundable. At that point you can only stop future shipments. It defiantly takes more time to see if a product works. Even though I saw no effects, they still charged me. Do yourself a favor READ THE FINE PRINT. Not a mistake I will make again! Don't be fooled. If it seems to be too good to be true...IT IS."

Forget the acai berry..unless you're familiar with it and happen to like it. It does nothing special. End of story.

There is a lesson to be learned from the acai berry phenomena and that is that most supplement makers are frauds, fakes, and only interested in taking your money. In particular the areas of diet and fitness are plagued with such charlatans and beset with countless myths and you'll see them every day in this forum. From protein shakes and muscle building supplements to silly Shake Weight and Ab Circle equipment to fad diets and green tea and Shape-Up toning shoes and on and on the BS runs rampant in Diet & Fitness. So, always be skeptical of and apply critical thinking to all advertising, reviews, articles, blogs, testimonials, and anything else which can be subverted by scammers. If a scammer can use it, they are.

Good luck and good health!!

Does the minimus 10 road shoe stay true to size?

Mark Ferna

Or do I have to purchase half size larger than what I usually wear?

Answer
The New Balance Minimus line has taken the running world by storm. Soon, you'll be tempted by the New Balance Minimus Road Zero (MR00), the first zero-drop offering from New Balance. This review, from our new contributor Ken, is a full-on critique of the shoe after 200 miles from an industry veteran.

I had the huge privilege to receive a pair of this highly anticipated minimal shoe from New Balance back in August 2011 (8 months before its release) and give it a lengthy test. For those of you that do not know me, my name is Ken Larscheid, owner of Elite Feet Running Store in Brighton, MI. I test many shoes that we are thinking about stocking in the store for our customers, and Zak thought it would be a great idea to have me review this shoe I am already so familiar with. I think about how they fit in the mix of competition already on my shoe wall, how it will fit a customerâs foot, and if it fits in with our philosophy at Elite Feet Brighton. Any new shoe must fit all of these characteristics to be able to earn a spot on Elite Feet Brighton's shoe wall, and the New Balance Minimus Road Zero does that. Now I want to share my thoughts and findings with this shoe.

She has just started to walk but the walking shoes seem too solid for her feet. Will the ones for cruising be good enough?

Answer
We had this problem with our son as he started walking quite early (10 months) We tried him with the walking ones and he was a little unsteady at first but then he soon got used to them. If you take her to a proper child's shoes hope they will be able to give you the correct advice and if they don't work out, take them back and swap them. After all, your baby won't have walked outside in them.

Why did my knees start hurting when I jog?

About 2 years ago I started running for "just getting fit" reasons. But, recently I have been getting knee pain when I run or even just walk, I've never had this happen before until now. Also I've been running in my neighborhood on concrete/asphalt if that had any factor in it.

Is that a sign I may be doing something wrong when I run? Should I buy new shoes or might it be something else? I would love to hear from you as I am a little concerned about this. I am neither old (only 27) nor do I have any other physical condition on a continual basis that would explain that.

Answer
If you started running on your own, you may not have learned the best ways to do it to keep the impacxt at a minimum. After all, your full weight comes down on one knee, then the other. Now, the concrete issue isn't really relevant, because if you were running on dirt, the only "springiness" would be from the grass, and that's not really enough to protect the knees from the jolt.
Consider changing the way you run. Perhaps to a more "body forward" stance, so that the forward portion of the foot gets the weight, rather than heels and knees.
Watch how runners in a fast race have their bodies.
I suspect that you have learned bad habits, and "Running for Dummies" might be a good book to read.

Additionally, the reminder that with ANY bone or muscle pain issue of undetermined origin, your Vitamin D level could be an issue, and I've included an !Answers site where I addressed that.

Best to you.

What does it mean when you self preoccupied and very manipulative?

Just A Typ

I am pretty much like all two of those. I am self preoccupied for example I talk about myself all the time by using the word "I" in all my sentences like caring about my own interests, needs, and wants rather than others. I am also very manipulative. I've been manipulating people all my life ever since I was a child and I find it very fun to do. I don't care about others who give me sympathy as long as they give sympathy, admiration, and attention. I won't have to ignore them or get angry with them. I also have self entitlement for example I believe I deserve things because I deserve them like for example I believe I deserve to be called on first in class, get first in line, and many other things. I am also 18 years old

How To Spot The Toxic People In Your Life
Do you suspect you have a toxic friend, family member or partner in your life? Dr. Phil McGraw, author of the book "Life Code," says that the world is full of toxic people he calls BAITERs (Backstabbers, Abusers, Imposters, Takers, Exploiters and Reckless) and that evil people are all around us. The key to protecting yourself from BAITERs, the psychologist and talk show host says, is to know how to spot them.
In this clip from "Oprah's Lifeclass," Dr. Phil reviews eight characteristics of BAITERs -- red flags you need to know in order to identify those who are toxic. First on the list? Entitlement. "They have this air of arrogant entitlement," Dr. Phil says. "They really believe they're entitled to your life."
Another sign of a BAITER is that they lack empathy. "They don't have any feeling at all for what you're experiencing," Dr. Phil explains. "They don't know how to stand in someone else's shoes."
Running through the rest of the list, Dr. Phil points out several more characteristics of these toxic people: They don't have the ability to feel guilt, they are irresponsible, they thrive on drama, they brag about the last person they outsmarted, they've got a bunch of short-term relationships and, lastly, they are delusional.
Once you have identified a BAITER, you can protect yourself from getting harmed.

Donât want to be that way? Behavior comes down to habit, change your habits to change yourself. Thinking positively about oneâs self and doing what needs to be done (particularly when it is hard to do) can go a long way, and thinking positive thoughts is more effective than trying to suppress negative thoughts. âConscious parts of the brain train other parts of the neural machinery, establishing goals and allocating resourcesâ (Eagleman, âIncognito: The Secret Lives of the Brainâ). Establishing a habit to replace a habit that is the result of many years of practice is very difficult, particularly if it involves behavior that has become a character trait. If you start slow and gradually increase you will have a better chance of making it a habit. Of course, it will take 3 weeks or more to establish a replacement habit, and longer if it involves a firmly entrenched trait. One must commit to doing something they find difficult to do, and make gradual steps toward a goal (the psych concept of successive approximation).

Guided imagery is a common technique in improving athletic performance and in cancer treatment, among other things. It involves mentally picturing a specific image or goal and imagining oneself achieving that goal. Those with cancer are taught to imagine their bodies fighting cancer cells and athletes are taught to see themselves executing their stressful behavior with proper form. In this case, one could imagine the creation of new neural connections and weakening of old neural connections (or both). Guided imagery: http://www.healthjourneys.com/free_audio.asp

I am going to Vegas at the end of July, and I know it will be miserably hot. I have a wide foot, so just any shoe is not comfortable. I don't really want to wear tennis/athletic shoes because it will be so hot and we all know they don't look great with every outfit. I hear that there is a ton of walking to and from buildings, and to make sure to bring your walking shoes. So, with all of that being said, are there any comfy and cute sandal type shoes out there good for walking?

How do you make your room smell good?!?!?

best running shoes for 7 year old image

Emily

I'm a 13 year old girl... and I'm not very clean! My room is always pretty dirty! I like to eat in my room but I always bring my plate out a couple minutes after I'm done... but I'm bad about leaving cups in my room though.
I play a lot of sports and I run after school so my workout clothes never smell to good and my feet always smell horrible and so do my shoes. But every night before I go to sleep I take a shower and put my clothes in the dirty clothes hamper in the bathroom.
I straighten my hair every morning so sometimes it smells like somethings burning.
I don't know what to do. I'm the middle child out of 3. Two years younger then my sister 7 years older then my brother. My sister's room is ALWAYS clean and ALWAYS smells AMAZING!!! My brother isn't old enough to clean his room but my dad keeps it clean. I have a dog that loves to be in my room and sleep in my room. And he doesn't smell to good either but my room smells nothing like him. I'm tired of being the dirtiest one and I'm scared I'm going to start smelling like my room does!
How can I get my room to smell good and keep it smelling good?! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Answer
You've already answered your own question: a clean room smells good, which you have noticed by your brother's and sister's example.

Room doesn't smell like the dog, well - it smells like everything PLUS the dog.

- Dust everything.

- Wipe down every surface. You don't need any kind of a cleaning agent, just wipe down with a damp cloth to pick up dust and wipe off assorted spills.

- Vacuum.

- Get the dirty laundry WASHED, not just festering in the hamper. Get that stuff into the washer and going just as soon as you have the stuff off, don't let it age and sharpen like cheese. Bleah.

- Get your nasty running shoes out of the room. Wash 'em once a week. Air dry, however.

- Change sheets and pillow cases. Flip the mattress. Remove any drapes and wash them too.

- No more eating in your room. EVER. Food smells linger and add to the funk. In the kitchen where it's mostly nonporous surfaces, this is no problem and food smells are great, but in the bedroom where it combines with your manky sneakers? Yech.

- Wash your backpack and gym bag. No kidding.

- Wash the dog. Might want to start doing that on a weekly basis, dogs don't keep themselves clean like cats do and can get kinda funky pretty fast.

- Do your hair in the bathroom with the exhaust fan going to get the burning smell out of the house. Or try going with it curly for a while, curly is cute.

Whatever you do, DO NOT add any Glade plug-in things or scented candles or other junk like that. You're trying to eliminate smells, not muddy the waters by adding more. Febreze and other so-called "odor eliminators" DO NOT WORK, they only mask odors with their own, or encapsulate the source. Your best results will come from actually REMOVING the sources. Do all the steps above and you should notice results immediately.

This isn't a small project and it's going to require a lot of energy and effort on your part. It's going to require a behavioral modification on your part, and that's the hardest part of all.

Good luck with it.

What speed should I run on tredmil to lose weight?

Jesse

I'm a 16 year old male and I'm 5 feet 7 inches. I weigh 153lbs and I'm suppose to weigh 120lb for my normal weight, so I have to lose about 30 pounds. I really want to exercise on the tredmil and run but I'm really self conscious because sometimes when I run my friends say I run weird like I'm jumping and I feel really weird. What speed should I run on the tredmil to run? I usually have it on 4 incline and speed 4 when I walk, but I want to burn more calories so I lose weight please help me. What is a good running level for beginners and should I have any incline when I run? I don't want to run too fast either like I'm going to die because I get tired really easy. Also would running shoes help me? I wear my old vans because I don't have exercise shoes and how long should I run for?
Thanks it really helps. I might but running shoes and I'll try running on 6 too. :)

Answer
Some treadmills have "trail runs" that vary the distance, speed and terrain to imitate trail running/hiking. They usually start our slow to warm up and then gradually vary the speed and incline throughout the session. The one on my treadmill will go as slow as 2 mph and as fast as 6 mph for about a minute. Now 6 is a little to fast for me so I'm able to override it and reduce it to 4 or 5 mph.

Shoes are important, too. Don't use the thin soled flat shoes (Vans, etc) as they don't have enough cushion to protect your bones. Get shoes that have a thick heel and tread. You can find them at a shoe store for a reasonable price ($50-$80).

Rayla

I tried to tell my mother 1 year ago. She said I would get over and it was because I was raped. So she feels I have to trust men again but I have liked women before that experience. At first I thought I was bisexual because occasionally I will think some men are attractive but it is rare. I have only kissed a girl one time at a camp out but it felt right. I am trying to decide how to tell my family. I have a feeling it will be chalked up to the rape, bi polar and ptsd. My family is pentacostal. I am 23 and been wanting to come out for about eight years now. =/

Answer
Your trauma history DOES have a huge impact on your attractions. Survivors of Child Molestation and Rape have predictable and traceable brain alteration due to their experiences and while it wasn't sensitive of your mother to react the way she did, she's right in that Sexual Trauma has a MASSIVE roll in all sorts of sexual confusion, sexual acting out, sexual compulsiveness and addiction, etc.

I don't know if you're a lesbian.
I don't know if you're bisexual.
I don't know if you're straight.

I'm just telling you that Sexual Trauma AND BIPOLAR DISORDER lead to all sorts of sexual acting out and until you get your mental health under control, you shouldn't be "Coming Out" and slapping labels on yourself because you might not ACTUALLY be what you think you are in the long run.

Until you work on your mental health, you'll just continue to bounce around until one day you'll hit rock bottom and realize you've lived a miserable existence going from one attempt at affect regulation after another like a heroin addict constantly chasing the dragon.

I know, you'll respond with hostility and the "HOW DARE YOU!" bullshit that almost all trauma survivors initially respond with, but that knee-jerk reaction and not wanting to confront your trauma history because it hurts a LOT before things start getting better, but reality is reality... You need treatment...

LONG TERM BLOODY TREATMENT that will hurt like hell and you'll want to resist and you'll decide that the therapist is "Stupid" and "Doesn't TELL me what I need to do!" and eventually you'll end up like EVERYONE ELSE IN YOUR SHOES and either give in to the process or give up and live out your days fu*ked up and blaming everyone else for your feelings.

"This isn't what I'm ASKING about! Why can't she just answer the damn question?"

Why? Because your question is just a SYMPTOM of the far greater pathology that must be taken care of... When you actually start your recovery process, you'll find that "Coming Out" won't be as important as you think it is now.

Running 4 miles a day weight loss?

Taylor

If I run 4 miles a day and only drink water and no bread or junk food can I lose 10 lbs a month ?
I was thinking about increasing the mile amount each month
Any more tips ?

Answer
Congratulations! You're headed for health. A few tips to help...

Running 4 miles every other day will be sufficient to go to your natural, healthy weight. Mix in weights on the off days, and rest on the seventh. Don't forget you should be measuring your body fat percentage, not total weight. As you work out you also will be building size and density of muscle. Monitor your joints, especially knees, make sure your ankles are aligned, run on grass and barefoot when possible. Track coaches are familiar with these things, as are some doctors and trainers. A smooth, even stride on the balls of your feet is best. Well cushioned shoes actually train you to land on your heel, this jars your joints more. Research.
Overdoing endurance training may damage your heart and shorten life expectancy (Boston Globe, Kotz 8/5/2013)

You're right about the second consideration...what you're eating. Here are health concepts I'm distilling from easiest on down:
1. Water intake is the biggest, easiest, cheapest thing you can do for your health, research Water Calculator
2. Most people should take a multi-vitamin
3. Food combinations & eating for your body type are foundational (book: "Fit for Life")
http://www.alderbrooke.com/chart.php
4. Cut out manufactured Fructose (corn sugar) = POISON, and Aspartame: it's a contaminated (mercury) industrial byproduct that spikes blood-sugar levels, increases hunger, damages the liver, causes the intestines to leak feces causing body-wide inflamation leading to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, effects female systems, and can limit growth. It makes up 15% of the avg diet, effecting 75M Americans; manufacturers mis-quote independent experts and refuse to ship samples to the FDA. It is the RED FLAG that the food is bad. This fructose is not the same as a fruit's complex fructose that is bound to fiber.

5. Minimize manufacturer-processed foods, research the ingredients & side effects
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/jan-june13/food_04-29.html
6. Having raw foods and correctly cooking some of them maximizes your food value. There are healthier substitutes for anything, like homemade humus for mayo, nutritional yeast for cheese. I regularly cook chili with rice for a complete protein. Dairy raises your body's acid level and your body strips calcium from your bones to balance the Ph--plums can help this and reverse it in post-menapausal women.

Running shoes for people with shin splints?

I am prone to shin splints and think it is because of the running shoes I wear. I am buying new running shoes and usually run 3-4 miles a day so I'm wondering what would be some good running shoes to get? Right now I'm looking into Nike Dual Fusion St 2 or Avia '5230' running shoes. Any tips/ good suggestions?

Answer
I have the very same problem. I run everyday on a treadmill. I run the same, 3 to 4 miles a day. And I thought it was my shoes as well. But Its mainly how you run. You have to make sure you dont slap your feet when youre running. And run from heel to toe. Kind of like roll your feet when you run. I had some pain on my shins and I asked my mom how to stop it and thats what she told me cause she was an avid runner when she was younger. She always told me dont slap your feet haha. Shin splints come from the constant impact from your foot hitting the ground as you run. So good shoes like Nike shocks or good supportive running shoes will help but it is mainly how you run. Also, wrapping your shins with band wraps will help as a support to your shin bone. I also heard that icing your shins after running will help a bit. Ive tried all these and they do help alot. Mainly what helped me though was maintaining a good technique for running. Hope I helped =]

I like asics gel-strike. I wear them with foot shox insoles. The poron helps absorb alot of shock. They really seem to help. You can get those at www.footshox.com. I do recommend taking it easy on your feet. I like to walk, but my plantar fasciitis has been acting up, so I've been using the stationary bike for now.

BQ: Would there be any benefit?
I dont want to buy them only to find I cant jog in them.

Answer
They are like running barefoot. In some ways, they are better because they encourage a more natural running style. ie. Landing more mid-forefoot. It does take time to get used to them though. You cant just throw them on and go run 5 mile. Because there is practically zero cushioning, you will be using your calves a lot more, and if you normally heel-strike or have bad running form, you will end up getting injured. The thing is, we have become accustomed to running in cushioned shoes, which has actually made our feet and legs weaker. Running in barefoot shoes, you need to build up the strength in your feet, legs and joints before you go on long runs in them. Start out with 1 or 2 miles and gradually build up. Then use your normal shoes the other days. It will take a month or two to get used to them.

i recently bought a pair of nike air max 2011's and couldnt be happier with them...except theyre mesh which is great for now in summer but come fall/winter ill need something more water tight, i dont want to sacrifice the cushion and ergonomics of the shoe though, any good styles i should look for?

im generally a heel striker so ill need plenty of shock absorbtion, good arch support and durability are a must.

Answer
Shoes are not going to be water tight regardless what they are made of.
When it is raining my feet get wet in all of my different shoes.
I have different shoes so I don't run in the same pair and allow them to dry before using again.
The advantage to the mesh shoes is that they dry faster than others.

After I workout I get a horrible aching pain in the arches of my feet.
I want to start running properly so I need some different shoes to the ones im using now. Can anyone recommend a good pair of running shoes that will support my arches?

I am looking for specific trainers so links would be much appreciated.

P.S. I live in England, UK so no american sites please.

Thanks!

Answer
You need to go get fitted in a running specialty store, rather than try to diagnose and fix things yourself. You could have too much "arch support" already that's causing your problems, for example.

And there are "arch support" insoles out there that would go in many shoes, if that's indeed what you need.

Where can I go to find good running shoes in London?

Q. I'm living in London for a little while and I am in need of new running shoes ... but I don't know where to go! Is there a UK version of Lady Footlocker or something like that? (Relatively) Inexpensive options would be great ... but I'd just like to get my hands on a pair of New Balance sneakers (trainers) or something. Thanks for the help. =)

Answer
Try office, they only sell shoes. Sports and funky mostly.

YES MAN

higher tax? bigger government? i don't get it.

Answer
Actually - EPA budget is 150% Vs 2008, 3 new Departments, since Bush yea bush and obama both the same.
The fact that the main liberal talking point is an out right lie when you actually look at the data provided by CBO, Dep. or labor and Census.
Statements like "This is the worst recession since the great depression" and "We inherited a much worse economy than we thought."
Both statements are false, in fact the opposite -
if you go to the Consumer price index, Dep labor and What ever Other agencies that track economic data.
FACT - 1982 Recession (end of jimmy Carter)
inflation 13%
un emp - 10% - real add unemployment + not in work force.
Poverty rate 21% -
Misery index highest since the Great depression.
Ronald Reagan won in a land slide taking 49 out of 50 states.

Obama took office - with
5% un emp - negative inflation to .50 very low, poverty rate 15 to 18 % cant remember - Clearly the 1982 recession was much worse for any president to take office to.

The results after R. R. -
After his first 2 years - had 5% GDP growth avg. cut inflation in half - reduced unemp- 4%
Forced to government shutdown, with 0 effect on the population,
after 8 years - 5% unemp - created 20 mil new jobs, increased the avg wages, reduced poverty by 3%,
fought the democratic control house every step of the way took no crap from congress, anyone in the political belt way.
his eights years netted and avg GDP growth of 5+ per year, the biggest economic boom in history,
Ronald reagan economic polices was not new in fact he based it off John F kennedy, the greatest and most loved us president and clearly anticommunist a right winger today lol.

After 2 years of obama - increased unemployment 5% - doubled the number of people who left the work force - meaning actual un-emp number are 13 to 16%
CPI forced to no longer count in its calculation - GAS/ energy or food - That means the current CPI at 3.% is grossly understated.
Decreased the value of the dollar 13% compared to other currencies.
Poverty is at record numbers, unemployment is at records number not since the great depression, Foreclosure rates are almost at great depression levels,
still job losses every month and the largest growth in the economy was the food sector- Yea obama,
CBO also reports that 30million people will lose their employer based health insurance in 2014,
Medicare trust the guy running the program is stated that is will be broke by 2016 - medicare is dieing and need fix now.
CBO also reports debt will equal 90% of GDP - by 2020 - over 150% by 2015 -
should i keep going why bother talking to liberal is is like talking to a brick wall. Duh i'm voting for obama, obama, yes we can, hope and change, yes we can, hope and change, obama, obama, drones, obama zombies,
my Shoes have higher I.Qs than most libs out their.
Cap and trade that the EPA is inacting - Will cause energy prices to sky rocket
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlTxGHn4sH4
If you read the first stimulus passed - it created the corperate jet tax deduction - that was new and created under obama, I think CBO calculated that to only cost 7 billion - good only 1.493 Trillion to go Good job Obama -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBsaF1kfv2I
this statement is so true it is scary -- Why would he be a good one term president and a bad two term president, cause his pushing an agenda to insure he wont be elected lol

So please tell me why liberals always thinks taxing and spending works when their is 100 years of history that proves other wise also this class warfare is getting old i saw drops in high net worth by almost 20% - yea less rich people to tax good job obama.
yea keep drinking the cool aid, actually go to the government websites and research the info,

Oh yea btw - Most of the democratic leadership in the house and senate where able to increase their net worth bay 10 to 20% nanny palosi, i think had and increase of 65% How is voting for all those libs working out for yea, don't worry they will throw you the scape's left over after the picked use clean.

How much will it cost me to get\own a horse ?

Amy

I live in Michigan and im planning in adopting a horse. I'm trying to save my money and I won't be getting it for at least 2 years. But my question is how much will it cost me a month and before I buy the horse. The boarding around where I live is between 150-300$. Thanks

Answer
My suggestion:
- lessons for 2-5+ more years (should still continue lessons when/if she gets her own horse)
- leasing a horse (if for some reason you cannot do it, or afford the horse you don't have to sell it, just return to the owner)
- after 4+ years of leasing then just CONSIDER buying your/her own horse

The purchase price is the least of your horses expenses in the long run. you might pay $1,000 to purchase your horse, but that is nothing to the amount of money you spend on the rest of the horses life. (even talking to a 4H/pony club leader will tell you anything under 10k isn't "expensive" in the horse world... however I have not spent more than 3k on a horse and have won plenty)

Horse expenses: (new horse cost)
- horse around $1200 (for a good broke first horse you are likely to pay a lot more, the horse should be a "steady eddie" and be more than {around} 12 years old - most first horses are 16-22 years old)
- tack upwards of $300 (generally the saddle alone is $300, NOT including bridle/headstall, bit, girth/cinch, saddle pads, saddle blankets, etc so really around $450 at least)
- new brushes $50+ (soft brush, hard brush, curry, hoof pick, shedding blade, etc.)
- buckets $20+ (water and feed/grain buckets - should have at least 2 of each)
- blankets; winter blanket $70+, sheet $50+, fly sheet $50+, rain sheet/light winter $60+
- fly mask $10+
total: (rounded up) around $1950 or more

Yearly cost: (assuming everything is highest price)
- boarding - upwards of $450 a month ($5,400 yearly)
- vaccines $20+
- horse shoes every 5-8 weeks $60-$140 (depends on where you are/the farrier you use - can add up to $1400 a year)
- getting teeth floated (horse dentist) $80-$160+ every 6 months
- hay (for good hay) I usually pay around $10 per bale, the average sized horse goes through 2.5-3 bales per week ($120 per month)
- grain (varies from where you live to what kind of grain, to the brand. to many options to post a price)
- supplements for grain $100+ yearly (but that is for many horses, some old, and some with medical issues)
- vet checks $100+
- that is all I can think of off the top of my head.
total: (based off the higher prices listed per item) around $8,550 or higher

Other Money:
- emergency vet fund should have AT LEAST $500 in it in case anything happens to your horse (in mine, I just add any extra money to it, so if/when something does happen I have enough to pay. or enough to pay down, and make a payment plan for the rest of the bill)
- You should have at least two months board at once (in case something happens, you have at least one months worth of extra board money to use while you get a new job or find new income)
Total: $800 or higher

together, the "new horse cost", the "yearly horse cost", and the "other money cost" are around $11,290 or HIGHER. and remember, horses DO break/ruin their stuff, you WILL need to replace things; horses CAN/WILL injure themselves

so at least $600 per month for just caring for the horse.

tip: do NOT buy tack before you have the horse! the chances of the tack you purchase (for a horse you don't have) actually fitting the horse are very, very slim. you can always give the idea to add a few hundred dollars to the purchase price and buy the tack the person had been using on the horse.

Good luck! I hope that in the end you get to lease/own a nice horse!

best running shoes for plantar fasciitis image

Loni

I want to take up running.

I need shoes with great cushioning and arch support. (Preferably under $100)

I have high arches and suffer from plantar fasciitis.

Thanks!

Answer
I addressed this actually with a competitive runner. You are going to have to buy custom made shoes if you are having issues with your feet. He was having issues after running, but you have issues before, which means you will have a ton if you start. You aren't going to find a good shoe for under 100 bucks. Go to a foot doctor and tell him you want to pick up running and want to be fitted with shoes for your high arch and tell him about your plantar fasciitis. Trust me. You don't want a commercial shoe. They end up causing more issues than good for people like you.

What is the best running shoe for an under pronator with high arches?

blue_eyd_g

I am training for a marathon and plan to put a lot of miles on my shoes. I have trouble with my Achilles tendon occasionally, especially if my shoe doesn't have sufficient shock resistance. I also suffer from Plantar Fasciitis, which only bothers me in the morning when I wake up. The pain is less frequent when I have better running shoes. I don't want to spend a fortune but I am willing to spend up to $140. Thanks!

Answer
Shoes, with something about foot pronations. (Running Shoes)
http://www.shoes.com/content.aspx?contentID=runningshop

Food for thought:

Information about some running shoes and spikes for hardcore runners:

Key for running shoes -

The better the shock absorption is the better the shoe is. Whenever possible, it is best to try them on before a purchase.

An ideal shoe will fit your foot like a slipper. Your running shoes are the key to staying injury free. Knowing how to use them will enhance your speed. You can wear any type of shoe you want for training in. But you should have a second pair of shoes just for racing in.

Oversize Trainers To Improve Your Speed -
The best type of trainer to wear is one that is either a half or full size too large for your feet. Buy a high quality cushion inset sole and place it in the shoe. This gives your feet added shock absorption protection. This could be a big help against Shine Splints. If one foot is longer than the other, buy the trainers based on the longest foot.
Except for hurdlers practicing their hurdle form, use this shoe for all of your running practices, including high speed sections. When you change shoes for races, you will find that your feet feel light and that your race time results are constantly on the speedy end of your speed range.

Shoes For Racing In:
A racing shoe (flats or spikes) that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. These shoes are normally very light but do not support your feet like trainers. You can make many brands of racing shoes feel very comfortable for use without soaks by placing a thin, soft cushion, flat insole in it. Replace the insoles when they begin to show signs of wear or when they are flat in your impact area. They can be bought in some grocery stores. If you use arch supports, place it in your racing shoe too. If one foot is longer than the other, buy this pair of shoes based on the shortest foot. However, if the toes on the longer foot are knuckling up in the shoe, then the shoes are too short - get a longer pair.

Hurdler shoe issue:
Shoes play a huge part of helping a hurdler be fast, especially in the short distance hurdles. This is not practical, but hurdlers need three pairs of track shoes. They need their proper foot fitting racing spikes, they need a pair of proper fitting running shoes for hurdle work practices only and, they need their oversize comfortable running shoes with extra cushion protection for all other running activities.

Wearing Spikes To Train In:
There are times when using spikes in a training section is very important to the athlete. Sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters, javelin throwers; long, triple and, high jumpers should wear their spikes when trying to calibrate their steps and starting block position. Once the measurements have been established with your spikes on, take them off and put on your trainers. Use your trainers to find the location of your established starting points. The order of finding your points should be with spikes first and then with trainers, never the other way around. This is because trainers vary too much in size, shape and, length for the same size foot - change your trainers and you change the deminsion of your foot. For this group of people, knowing how to find your precise starting points with your racing shoes on, assures you a consistent range of high end results for your discipline.

Is it OK to wear tennis shoes with certain outfits/occassions? What and when?

How old are you?

Answer
I'm 20, and no you are never too old to wear tennis shoes. In fact the older the person is, the more likely they are to be wearing tennis shoes (especially tan reeboks with the straps.)

Tennis shoes should be worn when doing any type of physical activity like tennis, jogging, or hiking.

This being said, however there are plenty of times that one should not be caught wearing tennis shoes;
At a party
At a club
At any special occasion/ event
Inside some one's house

Also there are different levels of class for different tennis shoes, like are we talking about $15 wal-mart shoes or $150 Nikes?

In the end it comes down to each specific occasion, if you are talking about school its better to keep the cheap tennis shoes in the gym locker anytime after the 4th grade.

Should I wear boots or tennis shoes to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon?

Renay G

I'm going to be hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in June. I'm worried that hiking boots will be too hot and heavy. Will tennis shoes do? If not, any sugggestions for type of boots?

Answer
Tennis shoes won't do. Use nothing less than a medium weight boot or a mid-hi trail shoe. The key is to keep your feet dry. Spray them with antiperspirant, then liners, then good thick socks. And carry spares.

In June it is brutally hot at the bottom of the canyon. Carry twice the water you think you will need, some gatorade powder for mixing, carry every inch with sunscreen, and wear a hat. Take frequent breaks on your way out when ever you can find a spot of shade and drink! And still you are going to be thinking you have now been to hell and back, but never realized it was going to be so incredibly beautiful.

How much should I expect to pay for running shoes?

I'm starting a new workout routine that will have me going running on a regular basis. I'm also hoping to get myself in good enough shape to run the occasional 5k. Because I'll be running regularly, I want to invest in a pair or two of good running shoes. Can anyone give me an estimate of what I should expect to pay?

Recommended brand names would also be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
You can get a decent pair in the $80-$100 range, unless you are a bit crafty.

Pay attention to sales, particularly those that accompany the beginning or end of high school running seasons. Department stores and sports stores will often have huge sales then to clear out old stock in preparation for the latest models. This can allow you to get $100 shoes for $40 or $50.

ASICS, New Balance, Nike, etc. Most major running shoe brands are good, I personally like Nike. For a beginner, I'd recommend New Balance, since they have many different shoes that can work for a variety of foot sizes and types.

Marathon training tips?

best running shoes ever 2013 image

Moto64

For the last couple of weeks I've started training for a marathon coming up on December 8th, 2013. The training is going well, and today I completed my longest run (8 Miles). I was wondering if anyone has any tips for training, like tips for what type of gear I should get and any tips that will just help me in my training. I live in TX, so I am thinking about buying a camelbak to take on my long distance runs, and I am also thinking about getting a roller massage thing to help my calves. 2 questions though?

- 1) For the last 2 weeks I've been running with my favorite running shoes, my Nike Free runs that I've had for 5 years. Would ya'll reccomend that I get some new shoes for my training? I love my free runs, but am worried that them being so old will hurt in the long run.

- 2) What type of gel packs, or foods do you reccomend eating on the run? I'm a vegan, so I think my choices for gel packs will be somewhat limited.

My dad competed in this same marathon last year, and he said it was miserable. He is in awesome shape, but I feel like he didn't really prepare properly for such a long run, so i want to make sure not to make the same mistakes as him. So any help is appreciated!

Answer
I'll start with your numbered questions:

1. You will probably need new shoes. Probably a couple of pair. Shoes last 300-500 miles, depending on how hard you are on them. Your Nike's are probably well into that, and you will likely wear out another pair along the way. Most people running longer mileage, like training for a marathon, will get 2 pairs of shoes, then rotate them every other day so they can dry out completely and the cushioning can fully recover. And you can wait twice as long before buying shoes again.

2. You will have to figure out what kind of foods your body can handle, since your situation is specific. You might consider Googling that specifically, "Marathon fueling for vegans". If the gels are vegan, they work, but I've never liked the flavor of any of them. There are more options out there than ever, like bars and stuff that are stomach friendly.

If you are going to take a camelbak I would say only use it during normal runs when you really need it, and when using it for long runs try to get a pattern for when you'll use it in the race. Your weekly long run should be treated like a dress rehearsal for the marathon - wake up at the same time, eat the same breakfast, run at the same time, hydrate and eat during the run at the same mile markers you plan to during the run. This lets you fine-tune things so that there are no surprises on race day.

A roller to massage your muscles may or may not be a big help. The main thing is to make sure you warm up properly before runs, and take some time to cool down and stretch out thoroughly after running. You have to let your body recover, unless you are in really great shape you can't go run 15 miles then jump straight into 2 or 3 hours of yard work. After long or hard efforts, avoid taking really hot showers, keep the water warm, there is some evidence that hot showers could aggravate inflammation.

Stick to your training plan, avoid missing workouts, but listen to your body and make sure it is getting enough rest, especially after long runs. Once your long runs get up there in mileage, it may take an extra day for your legs to bounce back.

Why do people care about wealth?

Some

Serious question for those not necessarily poor but certainly for all who are not rich, as well as anyone who can perhaps provide me with some insight. I'll be blunt--i come from a wealthy family and have grown up with my best and most solid friends coming from similar backgrounds. I have had a slew of other friends over the years from middle class backgrounds and some even poor with whom friendships typically dissolved. My question applies in general, however, for the beliefs and feelings of those not considered in the upper classes of society. Why so much hate? I know not everyone hates, but why do so many for such trivial reasons? Over the years I've had people try and belittle me for my clothes (things like polos costing $200) shoes, pants, hats, car, (this list is probably irritating a lot of you, but that is not the intent), jewelry, etc. People just point it out for no reason and act like i'm an idiot because I have these things, like I don't know how to manage money. But it's quite the opposite. I received a large sum of money for my 18th birthday because I never drank in high school, and I did not lie about it to my family either. I never told anyone about that gift, spare my closest friends. Word got out and random people I weren't even acquainted with would heckle me over it. I will also say I am definitely not stupid, nor is anyone in my family, and we are all hard workers. So why is it, that jealousy runs so rampant with some? How can someone's lifestyle really be offensive to another and why do those who feel they are being offended believe they need to make affluent people feel guilt? Why do they care how my family and I spend our money? It doesn't affect them in the slightest. Is this some sort of inferiority complex? Those who are capable, please elaborate. thanks.
i'm not a republican or a democrat haha. assumptions like that are the type of accusations i'm talking about.
i love how i ask this question and immediately receive responses from people regarding my lifestyle of which i have told you very little. shoulda posted this in psychology.

The annoyance of soggy sneakers sparked river-rafter Mark Thatcher to create a sport sandal he coined "Teva." Now a global success that rakes in millions each year and keeps adventurous feet worldwide safe and dry, the question remains: How could the creation of an unfashionable shoe turn into a multi-million dollar global brand?

Twenty years ago outdoor enthusiast Mark Thatcher had a problem: when he rafted, his shoes got wet and weighted down. Flip-flops were an alternative, but they are too flimsy to handle rugged outdoor terrain. His solution was to morph a shoe with a flip-flop, creating a sport sandal called Teva (Hebrew for nature), which the company calls "the spirit of a sandal with the soul of a shoe."

The fact that a new brand of sandal would hit the ground running may not come as a surprise. From the beach to city sidewalks, naked toes are everywhere as sandals become the obvious alternative to shoes in summer months. But Tevas are unique in that they are lacking aesthetically -- basically thereâs just nothing cute about the shoe. It wasnât created with the intent to be visually appealing or to appeal to the masses; it was all about function, about filling a need for outdoor enthusiasts who were slowed down by wet feet.

The lack of beauty may explain why Mark Thatcher skipped retail stores when it came to selling the sandal. Instead he went straight to the rivers and sold 200 pairs to rafters in his first year. From there it didnât take long for Tevas to appeal to a vast, uncharted market that went beyond rafters. Soon consumers from college students to moms to Dead Heads were all sporting Tevas. Extreme comfort trumped any aversion to the odd-looking footwear.

Thatcher set up shop in Flagstaff, Arizona, where Teva headquarters remain today. Although he canât claim to be the sole inventor of rugged sandals (well-made sandals for rough terrain date back to AD 500), he was the first to make a major change to the basic sandal since the rubber flip-flop appeared shortly after World War II. For this, Teva was granted a patent.

Thatcher soon partnered with Decker Outdoor Corp., which markets Teva (along with shoe brands Simple and Ugg). Decker Outdoor takes on the challenge of protecting the brand from copycat competitors (e.g., Nike and Reef) and knock-offs by avoiding outlet sales. Tevas are sold in specialty sports and athletic footwear stores.

With just a single office in Flagstaff, Teva had to rely on more than its many enthusiasts to spread the word. In 1996 Teva stepped up the Web, creating a site, and two years later, was selling its complete line of sandals online. Now the site, which accurately portrays an outdoorsy, adventurous brand, is a spot to shop and catch up on all the places the brand has extended into.

The site also sells what has turned into a massive line of shoes and sandals. Still sticking to comfort and function, there are different styles for men, women and children, covering a variety of functions; some models of the sandal are described as the perfect shoe to run to the store in while others are described as a shoe that will allow you to run both trails and rivers.

Teva goes beyond just shoe sales to strengthen its outdoor extreme sports brand image. The company sponsors sporting events that are recognized worldwide for top athletic competition. Along with events, Teva also individually sponsors some of the best extreme athletes worldwide.

Another key component of its brand image and appeal among outdoor enthusiasts can be found in the commitment Teva makes to the environment. This includes an internal corporate program that focuses on conservation and recycling as well as support of various independent environmental groups.

Despite what seems like all the right moves from a brand strategy point of view, the brand hasn't been free from controversy. Decker Outdoor products are made overseas. Whatâs a homegrown US brand, born and bred in Arizona, first made in California, doing sporting a tag that reads âMade in Chinaâ? Globalization seems an obvious wrong turn for this wholesome American brand. When red flags went up, Thatcher voiced his defense of the move overseas by taking the strong, unapologetic stance that Teva was providing jobs where they were needed, and business is business -- itâs cheaper to produce the shoe overseas.

Whether it was his voiced confidence or the fact that people just couldnât give up the comfort of the sandal, the brand continues to thrive. Privately held, Teva makes up about 60 percent of Decker Outdoor sales, which totaled US$ 99.1 million in 2002. Thatâs with Teva remaining a single-office shop in Flagstaff, staffed by a mere 25 employees.

Whatâs next? The Teva brand plans to continue to extend its brand, and it will continue to be made overseas. The brand extension began three years ago when it started producing hiking shoes, close-toed water shoes and winter boots in addition to the traditional sports sandal. The next step is to extend outside the footwear arena as it starts to produce sporting apparel.

The long-standing question of whether or not the brand is extending itself too far remains, and the clothing line isnât out yet so itâs hard to tell if soon outdoor enthusiasts will take to the Teva logo on clothing. So far the way consumers have flipped for the brand, itâs hard to imagine the new venture will flop.

TIMBERLAND
HISTORY
The Timberland story began in 1918, in a small Boston, Massachusetts shoe company where Timberland founder, Nathan Swartz, began his bootmakingcareer as an apprentice stitcher. With his own hands, he cut leather, stitched seams, attached soles and learned how to craft fine leather boots. In 1952, he bought half an interest in The Abington Shoe Company. Three years later, he bought the remaining interest and welcomed his sons into the company. Together, they made shoes for leading manufacturers for nearly 10 years. In the '60s, waterproof leather boots as we know them didn't really exist. The Swartz family helped change all that by introducing injection-molding technology to the footwear industry. This technology fused soles to leather uppers without stitching, producing one of the first truly waterproof boots.

In 1973, the Timberland name was born. "Timberland" started as the brand name for our original waterproof leather boot. Then, because the boot was so popular, the company name was officially changed to The Timberland Company. In 1978 and 1979, Timberland added casual and boat shoes to its line to become more than just a boot company. In the 1980s, the company expanded into an international lifestyle brand. Sidney Swartz took the reigns and under his leadership Timberland was launched in Italy, their first entry into the international market (today we're represented all over the world). Then they introduced Timberland® clothing and women's footwear. In 1989, Timberland became a founding sponsor of City Year, the Boston-based "urban Peace Corps" that brings together young people from diverse backgrounds for a year of full-time community service. Today their relationship with City Year is more powerful than ever.

During the '90s, bold ideas like the Path of Service⢠program began. It gives Timberland employees 40 hours of paid time-off to serve in their communities. We also came up with more great products and introduced them to the world - watches, socks, backpacks, kids' footwear and other gear. In 1998, they launched the Timberland PRO⢠series of "Workboots for the Professionalâ¢." And, Jeffrey Swartz, stepped up to grow the company his grandfather started and the brand his father built, by turning Timberland into a twenty-first century example for socially responsible corporations around the world.

What should I buy when I go school shopping?

Kaylie

At the end of the summer I am going to shop with my friend for school shopping. I don't know what to buy?

Answer
Buy cute clothes that are school appropriate(: I recommend Kohl's, Maurice's, and Buckle first off(:

You need about 4-5 shirts, and 5-6 pants/jeans. Depending on where you live, styles and what's 'in' will vary.

You also need at least one pair of shoes, probably tennis shoes for gym, etc. I recommend Nike Flex, or Nike Free 5.0. If you can't afford Frees, Flex is still a good shoes and it's cheaper.

You want to get outfits that look good together, so getting jeans is a good option because they go with anything. Anything denim is in right now, vests too!

Some ideas:

Jeans: Really Easy, American Eagle has my favorite jeans, they fit perfect! Miss Me jeans are nice too though, so if you have enough cash, get a pair(: White jeans are classy!

Extras: If you wear earrings or jewelry, consider getting some that matches(: Makeup is a plus in small amounts.

You can expect clothes shopping for school to cost about $600-900, depending on what you get.
--It only costs me about 400 because I buy clothes throughout the year for next year, so the biggest chunk for me is shoes.

P.S. During the summer, winter/fall clothes are on sale, vice versa.(;

The best time to buy boots(Uggs/ biker boots) is in spring/summer, along with Sperrys

What is a good workout routine for a beginner in running?

best running shoes for 800 meter image

i'd like to run better, but i'm always short of breath, i've got short legs, and i'm on the heavy side. My ankle ends up hurting after 2 mins of running, my mouth gets really dry as well. Please help!

Answer
I definitely know how this feels. I've alwasy been on the heavy side, but since I'm in high school I joined track and field....

All I can say is push yourself and you will feel great. One word can solve a lot... JOG!! It's obvious what a jog is but it's slow, and the point of it is to push yourself a bit forward with the ball of your foot rather than running really hard slamming your feet on the ground. Whatever excersize you do, a half mile of jogging (two laps around a track; 800 meters) makes a great warm-up (sounds tough, but after getting used to it it's great). Do some stretching and then try sprinting a little, then more jogging.... walking in between is okay, just don't stop moving the whole time you are working out, unless you are taking a much needed break. Oh and always stay hydrated!! It lubricates your joints to help you stay moving.

Hope I helped. :)

ps. Never run in shoes that have a sole that goes in a straight line... always run in sneakers with a sole that is shaped for your heels. Running in Chuck Taylors is what makes my ankles hurt like that.

What are the best middle-distance track spikes, specifically for the 800 meter?

Mike

no price limit and they are going to be for outdoor track if that matters. I have been running my whole life, but this is my first year of track that allows wearing spikes. I just run the 800 and 4x800.

Answer
Id say Nike Zoom Victories are my favorite out of all the spikes i won. I also run the 800 and I love the Victories. They are pretty much the lighest shoe on the market for middle distance running spikes (im pretty sure they are the lightest) and they have a great spike plate. They are a very fast spike. Nike has recently come out with Victory 2s and I have not seen them in person but by looking at pictures i think im gonna stick with the original Victories.
