What kind of running shoes should I get for running on a treadmill?

best running shoes out image

hello.

I got a treadmill for christmas and need new running shoes. Today I am going to go purchase some, but what kind are good for running on a treadmill?

Going to Olympia Sports or Sports Authority if that matters.

Answer
You should go to a good running store and have them analyze your gait, if you pronate or not, etc. A good qualified running store should be able to give you the right shoe for your run style. Every BODY is different and there is no easy answer to this. I have personally found -- after years of trial and error -- that Saucony Hurricane works for me. Also, always buy one size bigger in a running shoe. If you wear a size seven, get a size eight in running shoe. This will help reduce blisters and loss of toenails!

What's the difference between trail-running shoes and running shoes?

Vitavetave

I'm on a tight budget right now and the cheapest quality running shoes I came across were trail-running shoes. I usually run on cement, so would this be a bad investment?

Answer
They can be heavier, more stable, have more aggressive tread, and usually have less cushioning. Some transition to roads better than others. Some incorporate quality waterproofing.

Cement is the hardest surface on which you can run -- you'll often want more cushioning than the average trail shoe provides.

When it comes to running shoes, it's more important to find the right shoe(s) for you than just the cheapest shoe in the short-term. If you have to buy other shoes, get injured, etc., what's the cheapest shoe right now will not still be the cheapest shoe in a month or two.

I'd try to find the right shoe options for you while ignoring price a bit more, and then spend time shopping around, finding sales or coupons, older models, etc., if you need to.

I want to start running more and I would like some good running shoes. Currently I am at 1 &1/2 to 2 miles but I will be doing a 5k in June. I also want to do the Mackinac Island 10k run in September. I have low, almost flat, arched feet. I want the Nike Eclipse running shoes but I don't know if those will be right for me.

Answer
Definitely try them on first. I find saucony works best for me and Asics second. I didn't like Nike much. I had Nike racing flats for some xc tracks, but normally ran in saucony shoes. They only make running shoes. Brooks and new balance are also liked by many. If you can find a store that specializes in running shoes, go there because they can probably find you shoes that match your feet and running style. Shoes are way more important in running than most people realize so you want to make sure you get the right ones.

As a runner which shoes would recommend for a beginner?

moonguardi

To make a long story short. Three months ago I put on an old pair of shoes and went running. After running for three months I have come to the conclusion that I enjoy spending my mornings running. However, in the past couple of weeks I have noticed that I have developed some minor pain in my knees from running. I have been advised that the problem may result from improper footwear and to purchase a pair of running shoes - not simply tennis shoes. This will be my first pair of official running shoes. So, I'm looking for some advice and recommendations, not simply from the sale person. I'm also looking for a pair that support low arches.

Answer
I know you have requested a pair that support low arches but try the Asics Balckhawk IV. Perfect for beginners and they are a neutrual shoe but seem to hold up well with all feet.

I want to take up running.

I need shoes with great cushioning and arch support. (Preferably under $100)

I have high arches and suffer from plantar fasciitis.

Thanks!

Answer
I addressed this actually with a competitive runner. You are going to have to buy custom made shoes if you are having issues with your feet. He was having issues after running, but you have issues before, which means you will have a ton if you start. You aren't going to find a good shoe for under 100 bucks. Go to a foot doctor and tell him you want to pick up running and want to be fitted with shoes for your high arch and tell him about your plantar fasciitis. Trust me. You don't want a commercial shoe. They end up causing more issues than good for people like you.

New Balance running shoes for wide feet and high arches?

Jaed1122

I am wondering if anyone with high arches and wide feet have any experience with New Balance running shoes. If so, what syle number?
I know I should go out, get fitted and try some on, but I have two kids and it can be quite difficult. I currently have the 767s, but I believe the arch support can be better, and I don't think they make these anymore. I also love my Asics GTs but I think I would like New Balances.
Thanks.
I am also looking into the Nike Air Max Motos..
Any ideas would be great!

Answer
New Balance is one of the few running shoes that offers different widths, but I have found their structure and durability to be subpar. My dad who has high arches and wide feet prefered Saucony.

If the Asics really work for you, but don't offer the arch support that you need, then you may want to consider putting in your own arch supports or some orthotics ( or if your arches are prone to injury, try taping). For what it's worth, I've worn both New Balance and Asics and prefer the Asics. They were better suited for training for competitive running.

Good luck.

I run on pavement around my neighborhood. I try to do 3 miles a day. Maybe something with cushion/durability. What are some good mens running shoes?

Answer
My favorite running shoes are Asics, just as everyone else said, but they are not for everyone. There are different types of shoes for different types of runners. It all depends on how you move your feet when you run: do you pronate (turn your foot inward) or supinate (roll your foot outward)? How heavy are you? How often do you run? Are you prone to injury? These are all things to consider when selecting the appropriate running shoe.
The best thing to do is to go to a nearby running specialty store. A worker there should talk with you and watch you run and can reccomend the right type of shoe for you. Good luck with your running.

What are some running shoes for heavy runners?

bellaleaha

I am a heavy runner who supinates and has an extremely high arch. Can anyone suggest a good cushioned running shoe?

Answer
I'm not sure if you have them in your area, but a store called Front Runner (or another one called Fleet Feet) will set you up with the best pair of shoes for your running style. They will watch you run for a little while and then give you a couple different options.

Mizuno has several pairs with support. Go to Mizuno.com and search on men's footwear - click on Support. Those will be what you are looking for. The Inspire is a good looking shoe and is lightweight.

Don't listen to people saying "quit running". It's great that you are being active. Running is the all time best calorie burning workout you can do. DEFINITELY get fitted or your knees will hurt.

I'm wide and flat footed, and have never had a pair of running shoes that quite catered to that. It seems like no matter what kind of shoe I get, it still inhibits my running; slows me down or makes my feet hurt, etc. Does anyone have any advice on what kind of shoes to get?

Answer
I also have flat feet (though they are narrows, not wides) but I have really bad shin splints since I have "fallen arches". My doctor told me to get Asics since they have overall good support, are comfortable, and have more give in the sole, whereas say, Nikes don't really have a softer sole. The softer sole is easier on your feet and on your shins. What I do since I have really bad feet is I'll throw in some Dr. Scholl's arch supports for a little extra support. I've also seen newer shoes that look like feet- those are supposed to be really good for your feet! I've learned that running barefoot can help strengthen your foot also, and those "foot" shoes are more or less protectors for your feet so you can get the barefoot feel without stabbing a bunch of pebbles or sticks into your foot. Unfortunately, those are really expensive. I've never seen them for under $100. The Asics I own, however, I got for about $60 at Dunham's. Those two would be my pick.

Good luck! :)

Where do I find running shoes for flat feet in store or online that are resonantly priced? ?

Q. I have flat feet and for years I have had pains in my feet from running shoes, I've been looking everywhere online but can't find anything

Answer
Buy orthotic inserts. I too have flat feet and buying arched shoes are expensive as they have to be custom made.

i would use them for running on tracks and running cross-country.
i don't have any unusual arch or wide feet or anything like that.
i wear a size 10 in u.s. women's sizes.
i usually buy nike's, but i am open to whatever you guys think is the best.

whoever's the most convincing gets best answer, so use refences to articles and pages about the kind you think i should buy.
any other questions, email me from my profile before answering.

Answer
the absolute best running shoes for cross country and track (training not racing wise) that i see everywhere by the best runners are: nike, ascics, mizuno and saucony

those are the best though they can tend to run pricey. if you are serious about running those are the brands to look at. if you are not as serious im sure adidas or rebook has some training shoes. but above also has some just regular not as serious or intesne shoes too!

what matters is not the brand, but how it feels on your feet. depending on what you need, youll feet will pick the shoe
nike tends to run lighter
mizuno tends to have good support
acics and saucony have both

go to your local footlocker or running sotre though to have a professional help you out. tel them exactly what your looking for and they will help you. also try on differnet pairs and runn around in them and choose which one best suits your foot.
its the only way!
GOOD LUCK!!!!!

oh and if you like nike the best and have run in the before ask for some more nikes and try on different pairs!

No they don't. Sketchers do however sell extra wide width in certain styles. Just pick up the shoe and look for the letters EW on the sole. Stay away from New Balance tho...they are poorly made and run way more narrow then average shoes.

I have never tried Asics shoes. My daughter has 2 pairs and swears by them.

Answer
well I feel you there man, I'm 6'4 and around the low 180's to low 190's you seem to be a bit bigger than me but I definetly know the importance of a comfortable running shoe, thing is though...i tend to overpronate and so i need a stability shoe and while it does help decrease injury i really do need some more cushioning on my shoe as well

i have never owned a pair of Asics, to be honest but I do have 2 pairs of shoes of other brands, they are not all that expensive but have worked wonders for me

1.) I have my most mileage on this shoe, the Brook's Adrenaline GTS 8

this shoe has got GREAT stability, it does appear a bit bulky but at the same time it's got a great amount of cushion
they cost around 80 bucks for me they're are new models but i still enjoy these

next 2.) the Mizuno wave elixirs also provide cushion as well as great stability, they are also less bulkier than the Adrenalines

Bought a pair from ebay (from the US) and the price was a little lower than what most go for so that was the first reason I became skeptical. Received them and something seems very off about them. The color of the shoe isn't a color I am familiar with, it seems to be a mix between emerald and neo turquoise which I didn't think was made, and the sole is a slightly off version of that color which doesn't seem right either. The sole where the Nike+ sensor goes is very poorly made and that appears to be one of the obvious spots that give it away. The insoles are very flimsy and made of a weird material that looks recycled? They are not marked with a Nike logo anywhere, just an Asian character. Everything about the shoe seems a bit off, for being brand new top of the line Nike running shoes. Anyone have any good tips on what EXACTLY to look for when comparing?

Answer
If u can send me pictures i could probably tell but look for color differences and flaws by comparing your shoe to a legit pair good luck :(

Best pair of sprint spikes for sprinters running 55m to 200m?

Jesse

I'm looking for the best pair of sprint spikes available on the market that fit well for sprinters running 55m to 200m races (no hurdles). I've looked quickly online before but a lot of the websites I find are outdated as well as the shoe and I'm looking for anything more relevant for 2010 to 2013.

I've heard well reviews for Asics and Nike but I've never owned Asics and I've heard you pay for more of the name for Nike and not as much as the quality so I'm a little caught in the middle.

I'm not looking for something to show off really, just something that will definitely help me. Yesterday was my first track meet and I got a 7.67 on the 55M and a 28.06 on the 200M and I really want to improve my performance because yesterday I was one of the very few using a regular pair of running shoes (Under Armour).

And I'm new to the sprint box too, yesterday was the first time I used it and I only used it for the 55m and not the 200m and placed 4/6 and 5/6.

Thanks.

Answer
The best pair of sprinting spikes is the adidas adiZero Prime SP sprint spike. I know for sure Tyson gay wears them, and Jeremy Wariner. You can buy them from adidas.com, ebay, or eastbay.com. They are expensive though 150, but you said you want the best on the market.

Saucony (SOCK-a-knee) is a great shoe, very much beloved by truly serious runners, and they make a whole line of cross-country shoes, too (see link, below).

I've been running a lot more recently and one of my knees has started to hurt a lot during and for awhile after I run. I plan on buying a knee brace to help support it, but is there any way to strengthen them so that it can take on my runs?

I'm already planning on buying new better running shoes so I don't need advice about that, thank you.
Also, I do realize that running is bad for your knees, I don't need any lectures on that.

Thanks in advance!

Answer
I had to have arthroscopic on both knees and was scheduled for a total knee replacement.
I started to exercise at the gym with the Dr suggestion. I use the machine as I sit and lift up the leg, and the next machine that I sit and pull down the leg with weights.
I cannot believe the change. I have stopped using a cane and occasionally a walker.
He did tell me to stop running although I feel so good that I just do a fast shuffle at times.

What are some good running shoes at a reasonable price?

Steph

My name is Stephanie and I'm 25. I recently purchased a pair of Nike Reax Run III shoes at $70 which is a reasonable price to me. They are the worst running shoes I've ever owned. They gave me shin splits and they also cause me to have knee pain which I never had before. In my opinion they are a very hard shoe with very little shock absorption. I was very disappointed to say the least. Can anyone tell me some names of good comfortable shoes with good shocks?

Answer
Honestly, most good shoes will run you between $90-$130. It sounds expensive, but that's the reality.

Depending on your location, your best bet is a running specialty store. The staff frequently know the shoes well, as well as biomechanics and can usually recommend a good pair.

Stay away from any Nike Shox, Nike Lunar Trainer or Nike Frees. They're all colossal wastes of money.

And if $90-$130 sounds like a lot, think of it this way: $100 spent on shoes you'll enjoy and use is much better than $70 that ends up in the closet.

I am a 13 year old girl that is moderately active. I weigh about 95 LBS. if that makes a difference, I run in 5ks and run about 6-7 miles a week. I started seriously running in August of 2012, and have loved it ever since. I have under pronating arches on my feet (high arches). I also do pointe (ballet) and regular dance so my feet are pretty ugly from that. I also play volleyball and are planning to do track. I run on pavement, but sometimes the 5ks are on trails. I had under armor running shoes, but they are seriously lacking cushion and stability. So, the question is: I need new tennis shoes, and based on the information above do you have any suggestions on running shoes I should get? My price range is about $80-$120, but there is room for increases. I would prefer Asics, but I am open to any brands. Thanks for reading this!!!

Answer
Personally, I dislike Nike shoes since they are kinda expensive and they seem rather flashy. :/
But, like Chloe was saying, Asics, Brooks, and Nike are the better and more popular brands out there. From what I have seen of people participating in Track/Cross Country, this is what they generally wear.

If you can, it helps to go to a store that is able to analyze the shoe that is best for you in the store itself. Some stores have treadmills where they analyze your pronation and from that, they go through their selections and find shoes that are best. I think that this would be the best route, being that they will be able to find what is best for you in store.

Price wise, most shoes are within that price range, with only the extremely nice ones being + $120

Good luck (:

I need to get some running shoes for football because when do our conditioning my really hurt from runnning in vans. The vans I have are really terrible and are so flat footed. I can't really spend that much money on running shoes right now but what are some good affordable ones?
With comfort
Any brand any design i don't really care as long as I can afford some good ones.

Answer
Any shoe will be better than Vans! Asics are good. They come in a wide range of prices. It doesn't really matter what people tell you here. Go to a athetic shoe store and ask the salesperson. Then most important, try them on! Don't assume they'll "break in." A good running shoe is comfortable right out of the box.

Q. My 4 year old was just cast as a soloist in the waltz of the flowers and her teacher wants to move her to point class next year I know my kid loves to dance but is this a normal practice because all the other girls are 14 or 15 in the group.

Answer
Is this a joke?
It has got to be. At age 4, your daughter would not even be in pre-ballet yet as that starts at age 5. Before age 5 it is just playing at ballet and running in circles. Real ballet training starts at age 7 or 8 when the mind and body are mature enough to actually do correct ballet positions like engaging and holding turnout without doing permanent damage to their bodies.
If for some reason this is not a joke (and that is hard to believe) find another ballet school for your child or wait at least until she is old enough to take pre-ballet next year.

FYI most professional ballet academies don't start their dancers en point until age 13 (sometimes 12.) Before that age, the bones in the feet have not ossified enough to hold the weight of the body without doing permanent damage to them. Not to mention that in order to be ready for pointe a dancer must have strong ankles, feet, legs and core along with balance and the ability to engage and hold turnout without sickling. Most important is strong ballet technique and there are no shortcuts to that. It takes years and years of training. If you cannot do something on flat, you certainly wont be able to do it en pointe.

*Actually as there are no pointe shoes made to fit someone who is only 5 unless they have huge feet for their age, this story sounds very fishy. The average 5 year girl old wears a toddler size 10 or 11. that is about 5-6 whole sizes too small for the smallest pointe shoe made which would fit an adult woman's street shoe size 3 if you can even find ones that small.

Where do I find a list of manufacturers of unique products to sell?

Q. I am interested in finding unique, niche products that I can sell in my store. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I might be able to find a list of manufacturers of this?

Answer
If you just want to check the link an not read my long reply, here's the link to a great list of manufacturers, drop shippers, and wholesalers. The best one on the net, SaleHoo:

http://www.exploringinfinity.com/recommend/salehoo/

Finding a niche market is one of the key ingredients to really making it in online selling. Did you know that beginner sellers are much more successful when they appeal to a very small market, rather than trying to appeal to everyone?

Finding a niche isn't always easy - it takes time and persistence to find the right product to sell. To get you thinking, and to give you a few inspiring ideas, we have researched 5 product niche ideas to share with you. While some niche ideas might seem abstract to newbie sellers, that is exactly what a great niche is - very precise and seemingly difficult to source.
Niche Item #1: Heart Rate Monitors

These are used by athletes and gym bunnies or by people who need to keep an eye on their heart rate.

Why they are an exciting niche item:

* They have a 75% success rate on eBay (75% of all monitors listed on eBay in the last three months sold!)
* They are lightweight and easy to ship and store
* One size fits all

Niche Item #2: Plus Size Shoes

Many big-foot's out there find it very difficult to find shoes that will fit them comfortably from regular retail stores.

Why they are a super niche item:

* While these are commonly made by popular shoe makers, stores often order only a handful of pairs in larger sizes, which means that more and more, our big-footed friends must turn to buying online to get what they need.
* They have a high success rate on eBay (women's size 11 sell at 61.9% and men's size 14 at 75%
* Both men and women alike can require plus size shoes (Hot tip: women's size 11+ high heels could make a great little niche)

Niche Item #3: Plus Size Maternity Wear

Another plus-size item with huge success on eBay

It's a profitable niche because:

* Maternity and baby gear always works because people are always going to have babies, so you'll never run out of customers!
* Clothing items are easy to ship as they light and not fragile.

Niche Item #4: Military Insignia

Collectibles always make great niches and you can dig really deep to find the best ones. They are also perfect for people who are interested in them - you'll find it much easier and much more rewarding when you sell something you enjoy. To really niche it up, go for US military insignia from the Vietnam War which is big on eBay.

Why military insignia makes an excellent niche:

* It rarely dates or goes out of fashion
* There are so many sub-niches to discover like Russian war medals and World War 2 helmets.

Niche Item #5: Antique Clocks

Another great collectible item

They are a first-rate niche because:

* You'll appeal to both collectors and home decorators
* They have an eBay success rate of over 67%
* You can often pick these up very cheaply from flea markets and yard sales, then sell them on to make a profit

Niche items really are the way to go for newbie sellers and there are so many out there to keep you interested and best of all, make you money!

Since summer has been here, I can't find anything to do at all. I'm tired of watching tv all day, I can't go anywhere because I can't drive a car and my parents won't take me anywhere to do anything. i dont have any friends to ask them to pick me up or anything, i played with my brother on the Xbox but that got boring fast. I read books, i drew things, watched tv, go outside, but it all got old. I can't get on the computer, all i have is my phone. I looked for games that will keep me entertained but nothing still. I watched movies and everything idk what to do im bored. Can someone please help me figure out something to do that isn't:
Reading, writing things, watching tv, going outside, playing games, computer, listen to music, taking naps, i already did all this.. Thanks

Answer
1) Start an Instagram account, if you already have a personal one, make a fanpage or an edits page or drawing page, anything!!
2) Learn how to edit photos, a free harmless software I have is Photoscape (look up tuorials on YouTube)
3) Watch funny youtube videos or start your own challenge
4) Look at some DIY crafts on the internet e.g. crayon art
5) Download 'Wish' or use the website (you need facebook though), pretty much its a shopping site where you look at clothes, shoes, jewellery, toys and other gadgets, you can save them so you can look at them later or most of them will have a link to website where you can buy it
6) Watch movies, ok so it sounds cheesy but watching movies can be great fun, try classic chick flicks, comedy, scary, action, etc
7) Reorganise your room, do a big clean up and move your furniture, hang up new posters and artworks, create a feature wall, hang up photos, so many posibilities!
8) Start yoga or stetching, also try gymnastic or acrobatics?
9) Make something for someone, just make someting nice and simple to show someone they are loved, they will appreciate it! Try a photo collage
10) Text someone "You're beautiful" it might not entertain you for long but the reciever will be so grateful and happy, take the time to make someones day :)
11) Make up a workout routine or download apps that already some great workouts!
12) Make a movie with your friends! It could be a comedy, action or even a cheesy romantic story! Make sure to write a script and find some nice costumes!

A good running watch?

Annie S

I want a watch that shows mileage and has a stopwatch, I wouldn't use any other features.
I know that many GPS watches show mileage but they're typically very expensive, and include many features that I don't want.
Could you please suggest a watch that is under $50 that shows mileage and has a stopwatch?

Thanks in advance!:)

Answer
if someone knows of one, then i want one, too!

there are some that give you the distance and time, but they'll cost more than 50 dollars. you do have alternatives, but they cost from about a couple of hundred (i-Touch / i-Phone with those gadgets that you put in your shoe).

How safe is the French Quarter to travel right now?

Please be honest! We were told by tourist business that all was fine etc. We are talking about the safety of 3 women traveling for business, but want to tour the French Market area.
( not Bourbon or nightclubs)

What type of crime is taking place, whom is being targeted, and where should we avoid if we do decide to visit.

Answer
Yes, ladies the French Quarter is very safe. I would just not plan on being out by yourselves after 11pm. Just stay to the well-lit, well-traveled streets and you will be fine. Most of the crime that is occurring happens between the hours of 11pm and 6am, and nearly all of it is drug-related in the black or formerly black neighborhoods. Tourists ARE NOT targets unless you make yourself one by doing something stupid, like walking along a dark, unpopulated street after midnight, drunk. New Orleans is no different than anywhere else -- use some common sense and don't carry a large purse or a lot of cash with you, and don't flash a wad of cash in public. Leave your expensive jewelry at home. When you come to town, change into some casual clothes and comfortable shoes before you go exploring the French Quarter, and get a copy of The Times-Picayune, the New Orleans paper, to carry with you, so you look like a local.
The downtown area is pretty safe, too. Again, for comfort and safety, I would advise casual clothes and tennis shoes for walking, NOT a business suit and high heels.
The French Market is part of the French Quarter and is also quite safe. All the stores in that area close after dark. The only place open near the French Market after dark is Cafe Du Monde, for beignets and cafe au lait.
There is plenty to see and do and places to eat in the French Quarter/Market area. Jackson Square is also safe early in the evening.
You really don't have anything to be worried about, just be sensible. The only areas I would suggest avoiding in the Quarter would be--don't venture above Dauphine Street (toward Rampart Street) or past Saint Ann Street (toward Esplanade Ave.) after dark.
Public transit is also safe to use.
Do take some time to take a tour or two if you can, like a riverboat cruise, city tour, swamp tour, or visit one of our many museums. Let me know if you want more info on sightseeing.

What kind of shoes should I travel with to South America?

ben frankl

I'm traveling to Colombia. I'm not going backpacking or anything, but I imagine that I will be walking a lot. What type of shoes should I wear? I'm thinking about purchasing some teva flip flops (the women's olowahu style), but I'm wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with this sort of thing. Thanks!

Answer
I would recommend Tevas, or some other sturdy sandal. You are going to want the sporty bottom, but for your feet to be free in case they get wet, and to keep then feeling fresh. I usually also travel with a pair of flip flops for the beach and showering, and tennis shoes just in case I am in a chilly, or really buggy area. It also might be a good idea taking bug spray if you wear sandals so your feet don't get super bug bitten.

Why do we have to annotate summer reading books?

I like reading. I really do. I read Wuthering Heights this summer for school, and loved it. However, I have to annotate it. That's pointing out and defining vocabulary words, pointing out bits of author's craft, figurative language, allusions, symbols, things that contribute to the theme, make connections, and keep a running list of characters that says what page they're introduced on, whether the author uses direct or indirect characterization, whether they're the protagonist or antagonist (when applicable) what kind of conflict they're having, and explain their role in the story. Why can't we just be quizzed on it, instead? Or even assign a book report? It's less work, and I think it's more considerate on the teacher's behalf, because in our school we also have to read a second book (not annotate it though, thank God), do summer math work, and I also have Art History and US History to do.

This is summer. Isn't the point of it to have a break from school? I want to spend time with my friends, not spend all of my time on assignments that the teacher describes as "not intellectually stimulating, but it is time consuming" (that was Art History, but still), especially when the assignment is as distasteful as annotating. I understand why they want us to read, but why do they also make us do another long, time-consuming project when they could easily test us on the book, or assign a book report? What makes annotations so much more valuable than other assignments that I might even enjoy? I would like the book so much more if I didn't have to mark everything in it.

Answer
I'm sorry but all I have to say is QUIT WHINING!

If I were in your shoes I'd be having fun with it and actually enjoying the assignment. Use it as a great learning opportunity and a chance to try something new. I'm a university student on break and I'm actually EAGER to get back in class and do homework again. If I had summer homework to do right now I'd actually be thrilled.

Try to make the best of it instead of complaining it about. You'll go back to school smarter and more well-read than many of your peers.

What to wear in Ireland in April?

Daisy Girl

My husband and I are going to Dublin, Ireland area around April 19th. We are trying to figure out what to wear. Are jeans and running shoes fine? Should we both get some waterproof boots like Bogs? From all I've read I think we will need good rain jackets and umbrellas. But other than rainboots or sneakers, what kind of walking shoes should we bring? If it is raining and wet we don't want to wear leather shoes. What do people wear with Khakis? Thanks!!!
And also, does anyone know if they have Diet Coke in Ireland?

Answer
Yes, Diet Coke is available in every shop and supermarket in Ireland.

Unless you plan on hiking through boggy mountains or mucky fields, you won't need waterproof boots. You are likely to encounter showers in April, but they shouldn't last long, and you could do as we do, just shelter until each is over.

You can check the 5-day weather forecast http://www.met.ie/forecasts/5day-ireland.asp before you come. At present (and promised for next week too) daytime temperatures pleasantly around 13°C, quite nice in the sunshine, but night down to about 4°C, and we have had no rain in my area for several weeks. Last week was exceptionally nice, sunshine up to 22°C. Last year April was very warm and sunny, but that is no guarantee it will be the same this year.

Jeans and running shoes are fine, and bring a cardigan or fleece. Dress in layers and you can add or subtract as necessary. A light waterproof is a good idea, though I live here and have a couple of jackets but don't own a raincoat or umbrella. Bring any comfortable walking shoes, leather if you want to. My current typical day wear is jeans, T shirt, cardigan or fleece.

How does one become a world traveler?

langsuyar

Where do you start when you want to visit interesting places but have very little money (as in recent college grad = no money)? How about when you're shy?

Answer
I consider myself a world traveler. I've been to Europe, Asia, Africa and all over North America and am in my early thirties. Being a world traveler, in my defintion, is someone who makes traveling the world part of their life style and not just one big once in a lifetime whirlwind trip. Make travel a part of your lifestyle and plan. As Rick Steves says, don't try to do everything in one trip. Expect that you'll go back!!!

Basically, I have put travel as a priority in my life. In my profession, I could afford a BMW, the very nice clothes, shoes and furniture and a maid to clean for me once a week.

Instead, I choose to priortize travel. I did that when I was in college and I do it now as a professional. Trust me, the little things add up. The cost 10 DVDs can buy you a plane ticket from Dublin to Prague. The cost of 3 pairs of mid range designer sneakers or shoes can buy you a Eurrail pass.

Where to start - I started as a baby..but my first solo adult trip was when I was 18 and went to Montreal. Montreal is a good way to test your wings as French is the primary language yet it's really cheap for Americans and a short flight.

As for shyness - trust me, it goes away with experience and time. One of the great confidence boosters in life is being in a foreign country with no money and no language skills and coming out of it just fine! You'll find, too, that you'll run into other travelers who will just strike up conversations with you. Look at them as possible resources and talk about your trip or where to go next. Also, all-inclusive tours are very expensive but hour-long or day tours of cities or day excursions to outlying areas are not. That can be an excellent way to learn about a new city and meet other travelers. In foreign countries they tend to group you by your spoken language on a day tour.

I have no idea if I answered your question or not, but in summary:
1. Priortize travel in your discretionary expenses
2. Start simple on destinations (Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, London, Dublin)
3. Realize when you're shy, traveling and that moment in time gives you something to talk about. Put yourself in structured situations like a day tour to meet new people
