I am thinking about starting running. What are the best (inexpensive) running shoes to start out with? (as far as brand and model)

Answer
excellent idea. nothing is better for your physical and mental health than running :)

i've been running cross country since sophomore year of high school; hundreds and hundreds of miles later, i have been through a few types of shoes.
my favorite has to be Adidas Supernova Sequence 3 GORE-TEX Shoes, but they're around $110

for a cheaper alternative, i would definitely go with Adidas Kanadia TR 3.
amazon has new ones (both men's & women's) for 45 to 50 bucks (which is where i got mine). that may seem expensive, but for as good of a shoe as they are, the price is well worth it. all the customer reviews agree with me as well.

they have minimal fabric & are very light weight (very important for running), have layers of open ventilating mesh that keep your feet cool & dry, extremely comfortable, and minimal padding under the heel, which helps you avoid landing on your heel when you run (running landing on your heel is terrible for your arch, ankles, knees, and back).

the shoe is designed to not weigh down your feet like many shoes do, and encourages your feet to be in the correct position when running (run landing on your toes, always).

they have tons of grip on the bottom, which makes them perfect for running outdoors (be sure to run in the grass outdoors, never on concrete. it's terrible for your feet). the lengthy grip also means they will last forever...hundreds and hundreds of miles.

overall, you will not need another pair of running shoes for a longg time.

p.s. if you're ever running indoors on a treadmill, (once you have the landing-on-toes thing down) always run barefoot (in only socks). it's the best thing you can do for your feet

sorry for the novel; hope it helps!!!

what should I use for waterproofing shoes?

I am training for a marathon, so I got a really nice pair of running shoes. However, I am moving to Seattle, which is almost always rainy, and I know shoes get stretched out and don't fit as well after they get wet and then dried out. I was just wondering if there was a product, like scotch gaurd or something, that would be ideal for running shoes.
Thanks!

Answer
I've used SnowSeal on my hiking boots: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001H3T8M0/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001H3T8M0&linkCode=as2&tag=picnicpointpe-20 but I've never used it on my running shoes.

I just put my wet shoes on a shoe/boot dryer after I get home. Here is a link to an example of what one looks like: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0063L0MOO/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0063L0MOO&linkCode=as2&tag=picnicpointpe-20
I haven't noticed that my shoes stretch (or shrink) when I use my shoe dryer.

Should I wear running shoes (nikes) designed for sprints on a track or football cleats on football field terf? Im doing sprint work FOR the football season? (I have access to both)

Answer
When you say running shoes, if you mean spikes like track athletes wear then no, if you mean simply running shoes that joggers would wear then yes. Spikes are very bad to train in because they are designed to be worn for very short periods of time. They have very little support for your feet and training in them can lead to injury. Training barefoot on grass will help strengthen your feet and legs but would probably have little benefit for football as far as speed. Ultimately i would say wear running shoes in all situations and avoid your football cleats til football season.

Answer
Nike Shox Ride or Tailwind. They both have plenty of cushioning & stability for many types of feet. With the tailwind, be careful not to puncture the bubble inside the heel cushion.

Answer
NICE, France (Reuters) - A 35-year-old French woman has married her boyfriend 18 months after he was killed in a car accident.

Christel Demichel, who wore black, was married Tuesday under a little-used law in the presence of friends and relatives at city hall in the southern city of Nice, local officials said. It would have been her husband Eric's 30th birthday.

"Eric and I promised when he was alive that we would get married," she told French television.
"Even though he is dead, I respect the values I shared with him, especially as his death was not his fault."

Eric Demichel, a policeman, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident in September 2002. Christel, who was pregnant at the time, lost her baby in the same accident.

"I lived a beautiful love story and this wedding testifies to it," Demichel said.

Posthumous marriage is allowed in France under a law introduced by former President Charles de Gaulle.

ok so cross country season is about to start and I'm out of shape. I'm not overweight but...
I'm really lazy and I would rather not run, but i kinda have to cause in two years I may enlist in the army and I need to get ready. so how do I motivate myself to run?

Answer
Don't think about it as something you have to do, just make it part of your routine. Instead of saying to yourself "Aww, man. I gotta go run," think to yourself "Okay, it's 9am. Time to grab the running shoes." Not because you have to, but just because it's that time of day. Any good exersize program is about making it part of your routine, not interupting your routine to do it.

What is the best running shoe for an under pronator with high arches?

I am training for a marathon and plan to put a lot of miles on my shoes. I have trouble with my Achilles tendon occasionally, especially if my shoe doesn't have sufficient shock resistance. I also suffer from Plantar Fasciitis, which only bothers me in the morning when I wake up. The pain is less frequent when I have better running shoes. I don't want to spend a fortune but I am willing to spend up to $140. Thanks!

Answer
Shoes, with something about foot pronations. (Running Shoes)
http://www.shoes.com/content.aspx?contentID=runningshop

Food for thought:

Information about some running shoes and spikes for hardcore runners:

Key for running shoes -

The better the shock absorption is the better the shoe is. Whenever possible, it is best to try them on before a purchase.

An ideal shoe will fit your foot like a slipper. Your running shoes are the key to staying injury free. Knowing how to use them will enhance your speed. You can wear any type of shoe you want for training in. But you should have a second pair of shoes just for racing in.

Oversize Trainers To Improve Your Speed -
The best type of trainer to wear is one that is either a half or full size too large for your feet. Buy a high quality cushion inset sole and place it in the shoe. This gives your feet added shock absorption protection. This could be a big help against Shine Splints. If one foot is longer than the other, buy the trainers based on the longest foot.
Except for hurdlers practicing their hurdle form, use this shoe for all of your running practices, including high speed sections. When you change shoes for races, you will find that your feet feel light and that your race time results are constantly on the speedy end of your speed range.

Shoes For Racing In:
A racing shoe (flats or spikes) that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. These shoes are normally very light but do not support your feet like trainers. You can make many brands of racing shoes feel very comfortable for use without soaks by placing a thin, soft cushion, flat insole in it. Replace the insoles when they begin to show signs of wear or when they are flat in your impact area. They can be bought in some grocery stores. If you use arch supports, place it in your racing shoe too. If one foot is longer than the other, buy this pair of shoes based on the shortest foot. However, if the toes on the longer foot are knuckling up in the shoe, then the shoes are too short - get a longer pair.

Hurdler shoe issue:
Shoes play a huge part of helping a hurdler be fast, especially in the short distance hurdles. This is not practical, but hurdlers need three pairs of track shoes. They need their proper foot fitting racing spikes, they need a pair of proper fitting running shoes for hurdle work practices only and, they need their oversize comfortable running shoes with extra cushion protection for all other running activities.

Wearing Spikes To Train In:
There are times when using spikes in a training section is very important to the athlete. Sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters, javelin throwers; long, triple and, high jumpers should wear their spikes when trying to calibrate their steps and starting block position. Once the measurements have been established with your spikes on, take them off and put on your trainers. Use your trainers to find the location of your established starting points. The order of finding your points should be with spikes first and then with trainers, never the other way around. This is because trainers vary too much in size, shape and, length for the same size foot - change your trainers and you change the deminsion of your foot. For this group of people, knowing how to find your precise starting points with your racing shoes on, assures you a consistent range of high end results for your discipline.

Can the wrong pair of running shoes cause hip pain?

Q. I just got a new pair of running shoes about a month ago, since then I have started getting intense Hip pain after my runs. I am a competitive distance runner and I cant afford to get hurt. I have upped my milage recently also. Also I am now having pain in my foot. Could it be the shoes, or am i just overworking myself?

Answer
The hip pain could be caused by either a change in shoes or too great an increase in mileage, or a combination of the two. Here are some questions for you:

How long have you been running? What is your injury history before you got your new shoes? How are your new shoes different from your old?

There are different types of shoes to match the different bio mechanics of runners. For example, a runner with a low arch will typically get a stiff shoe that has little cushioning, and is built to compensate for over pronation. A runner with a high arch will typically get a shoe that is flexible and well cushioned. Of course, there are shoes for extremes, and a range of shoes between the extremes. Getting a shoe that is wrong for your bio mechanics increases the likelihood of injury.

If you have been running injury free for some time, you should stick with the make and model-line of shoes you are used too. If that line has been discontinued, you should get shoes from a similar model-line.

How old were you old shoes before you replaced them? Going from highly worn shoes to new shoes can increase the chance of injury. Replace shoes before they get too worn. Some runners go through a transition period when they get new shoes: They do a little running in new shoes, and more running in old. They increase the weekly mileage in the new shoes, and decrease weekly mileage in the old.

How big an increase in weekly mileage do you have? Too large an increase can increase the risk of injury. One injury that isn't unusual with a sudden increase is a stress fracture. And, the neck of the femur, and other areas in or near the hip can be affected by this.

To avoid too large in increase, many runners follow "Higdon's Rule:" Find the total weekly mileage for each of the three most recent weeks. Pick the one with the most mileage. Multiply that by 110%. For the current week, do not exceed that result.

what are the best running shoes when you have a bunion?

not what w

i really need to find a way to cut back on the pain. it recently started huting more and more. like a throbbing pain. are there any ideas on the best type running shoes or does anyone have an idea on how to cut back on the pain?

Answer
This sneaker is said to be good: New Balance 833

"They have a generously round toe box, no elements to bother a bunion, and come in widths. They are very flexible and lightweight, yet with plenty of cushioning to see you through distances from 10K through the marathon."

For treatments here are some ideas: SILOPAD⢠GEL BUNION
-http://www.supportsusa.com/ankle/silipos/bunion.htm

Most bunions can be treated at home. In some cases surgery is considered.

Nonsurgical treatment
-Nonsurgical treatment usually is used to decrease pressure on the big toe and relieve pain. Treatment includes:

* Wearing roomy shoes that have wide and deep toe boxes (the area that surrounds the toes), low or flat heels, and good arch supports. Avoid tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes that put pressure on the big toe joint. For more information, see:

Finding the right footwear for your foot problem.
* Using bunion pads, arch supports, or custom-made supports (orthotics) placed just behind the big toe joint on the bottom of your foot. They can help redistribute your weight while walking and take pressure off your big toe. Ask your health professional to help you choose the right kind of pads.

* Using moleskin or felt patches over or around pressure areas to protect the bunion from being rubbed by your shoes.

* Taking nonprescription medication to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Examples include acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or aspirin. If you have other health conditions, such as diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, or gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), talk to your health professional about which pain reliever is best for you.

* Using ice to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Apply ice to the joint for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, once or twice an hour as needed. Elevate your foot so that your toe is higher than your heart.

If your bunions are severe, your health professional may prescribe medication to reduce pain and inflammation, such as a corticosteroid injection.

Surgical treatment
-If nonsurgical treatment has failed to relieve toe pain and you aren't able to do normal daily activities, or if you have a severe bone deformity, you may want to consider surgical treatment. Bunion surgery is done to help restore normal alignment to the toe joint and relieve pain. For information on making the decision about surgery, see:

Should I have surgery for bunions?
-There are different types of bunion surgeryâthe best type of surgery for you depends on how severe your bunion is and your surgeon's experience. Look for a surgeon who does many different types of bunion surgery on a regular basis. Each bunion is different, and surgery needs to be tailored to each case.

Prevent another bunion. Good luck!

neutral cushioned running shoes for women image

ihaha

For women. Just a basic, comfy, shoe that is created for long distance that works well, but also is not very expensive.

Answer
You shouldn't run in a spike for long distances anyway, unless you're planning on running a blazing 5k or 10k at a track or cross country meet. You should really go to a specialty running store, where employees will watch you run in several different shoes to tell you which one is the best for your stride. Depending on how you place your feet when you land, you'll need a cushioned, neutral, or stability shoe. In my experience, the employees at the store will never tell you to buy the most expensive shoe just to sell you an expensive shoe. They are trained and are usually runners themselves who can also give training advice, know good local running routes, or which races are best to run. Local running stores often host training groups as well.
Most high-quality running shoes are going to cost around $90, but if you ask, your local running store might give a 10% discount if you're a student or for some other reason. Keep in mind that the shoes might be more expensive than you'd like, but doctor bills resulting from injuries from running in a poor or inappropriate pair of shoes will be many times more expensive.

Best running shoes for high arches?

Kellyn

I want to run a marathon, but I have high arches and don't want to wear shoes that will hurt me! Any suggestions?

Answer
The Saucony Grid Cohesion NX is a neutral cushioning shoe, good for runners with high arches and those who do not overpronate (feet naturally roll inward). Many consumers give it 5 stars, citing that this shoe is extremely comfortable, with a spacious forefoot that accommodates most widths, though it does come in two widths (for both men and women). Other great features of this running shoe is that it offers good traction, better than average heel cushioning and a breathable upper mesh for cooler feet. Whereas many shoes run $95 and up, this running shoe is more than a budget buy; it is a bargain at almost half that cost.

Here is some links to help you see the prices that these shoes go for:

Under Armour, heat gear, or cold gear, heat gear is obviously for the summer, but then in the summer you might want to consider under armour compression shorts, and cold gear, obviously for the winter, work really well, for running, I'm skiing cross country on a race team, and they work well and keep you warm, and I've taken up running too, so I'm on a race team for cross country, and I bet they will work just as well.

What are "maximum", "moderate", and "performance" running shoes?

best running shoes mizuno
 on Mizuno Wave Rider
best running shoes mizuno image

Jane

I was looking at this Mizuno running shoe chart thing, and the shoes are listed in columns labeled "maximum", "moderate", "performance", and "racing".
I think I know what the "racing" shoes are (flats, right?)
But why are the other shoes grouped as :maximum", "moderate" or "performance"?

Answer
Maximum refers to the amount of control the shoe has on the foot. Example, a flat foot with no arch needs more guidance because the foot will colapse when it hits the ground. Moderate shoes have a little less arch support and more cushioning, a performance shoe is light weight with less control in order to run faster or race. However, many people who need maximum control will race in performance shoes.

What running shoes offer good arch support?

Shirley

I need a good arch support in my running shoes. What do you recommend that is light yet offers good support? I have been having pain in the arch of my foot for some time, especially when I get out of bed in the morning.

Answer
First of all you need to stretch your calves in the morning when you get up, a couple times during the day, and at night before you go to bed. The reason your arch hurts when you get up in the morning is most probably (like most people) your toes are pointed while you sleep. This causes your plantar fascia to contract for 6-8 hours. So stretching will help keep the PF limber and over time the pain will subside.

As for shoes. In a perfect world I would tell you to go see a podiatrist (who runs) and get fitted for custom orthotics (insoles fit to your feet that you can put in any shoes to give you the support you need). I've had good results with Brooks Trance, Brooks Adrenaline, Mizuno Wave Inspire, and a handful of New Balance shoes (but they only number their models and change the model numbers over time so I've lost track of which ones).

Go to a specialized running store and get fitted. (Not Sports Locker, Finish Line, Hibbits, Dicks, or any store that calls itself a "sporting good store").

i really need to find a way to cut back on the pain. it recently started huting more and more. like a throbbing pain. are there any ideas on the best type running shoes or does anyone have an idea on how to cut back on the pain?

Good luck!

I have this bone sticking out on my right foot?

Alexandra

There is this bone (that was never there before) and it's right below my pinky toe region. The bone on this side is larger than my left foot. Ever since I got new running shoes, the bump formed. So everytime I run, that area hurts because of the friction. After my runs, the bone is red and feels raw/soft.

Is it a bunion...? What is it? My mom thinks it isn't serious, so she won't take me to a doctor.

Answer
It may be a harmless cyst known as a 'ganglion' which can come about near joints like the wrist. etc.
I got one in the past a distance from my ankle & it was when i started running also.
I also one on my wrist- which has since really gone down in size.

Since it feels sore i do think you should get a doctor to take a look at it.

Hope that helps. :)

What should my Ballet training and nutrition regimen look like?

best athletic shoes for flat feet men image

Rishta

I'm 5'5", 16, I weigh 113 pounds, and although I'm not strong or tone enough for ballet I am athletic. I want to excell quickly but I need an idea of how many classes to take, what other working out I should do, what stretching to do to become more flexible, and what nutrition plan I should have. Being ready for Pointe in a year would be ideal for me. Would I excell faster with private lessons? How much does it all cost? What to buy? Although, I have done research I Would like more perspective.

Answer
You cannot get en pointe in a year and if you have a teacher who will do that, run away from such poor teaching. You need about three years of three 90 minute classes a week to be ready. It may take more but most likely not less. Students aiming for a ballet career in ballet academies take 5 years of dancing every day before they go en pointe. The transition is almost seamless and in short time they are company ready. However as a recreational dancer you are not held to such a high standard before going en pointe. Not only do you need strong feet, ankles, legs and core along with balance, you need to be able to engage and hold your turnout without sickling. You also need strong ballet technique and there is no short cut to that. It is just repetition with a good teacher watching every move. Taking private lessons wont give you more time to have your muscle memory set but it will only make corrections a little easier. However, they are very expensive and really are better to correct a problem if you are having one. It would be better to spend your money on multiple ballet classes per week than on just a single private or 2 a week. You will advance quicker and get stronger with more group classes than just privates unless they were daily. Daily privates could cost between $240-$600 or more a week for multiple privates depending on the teacher and how many you take.
If you are trained by a teacher who wants to put you up too soon, you may not be able to get solidly on you box or engage and hold your turnout. That puts you at a major risk to snap your ankles. If you can get up but don't have enough technique, all you will be able to do is hobble about en pointe an look pretty bad. You wont look light and flowing like a professional ballet dancer. You must learn to do every first on flat before you go en pointe. Think of going en pointe like the icing on the cake. Your ballet technique would be the cake. Have you ever tried to ice a cake that wasn't fully cooked and cooled? You have a mess. When the cake is properly baked and cooled, the icing goes on like a breeze.
Find yourself a teen or teen/adult beginner ballet class. See if you have facility for ballet and like the training and discipline of the repetition involved. Then you can move to more advanced levels with more classes per week. You can start with 2 classes a week and gradually add more as you build stamina. Make sure your classes are at least an hour in length to start. That is okay for a beginner, but you really need longer classes as soon as you can handle them. Standard ballet classes are 90 minutes long.
Check to see if there is a dress code. If not, a black leotard and pink ballet tights are standard wear. You should also have your hair neatly in a bun. Regarding ballet slippers...I recommend full sole leather slipper for beginners. It works your arch more and that will help with future pointe work. Canvas split soles should be for more advanced dancers. Standard for girls is ballet pink slippers. Men where either the white or black ballet slippers. Check out Capezio Daisy or Bloch Dansoft for slippers, but any full sole slipper that fits and works for you is fine. Your shoes should feet snugly but not so snug that your toes curl under. They will stretch to form to your foot as you dance in them. Regarding nutrition, there is no magic wand here. Just eat healthily. There are no special foods that dancers eat.

Is it weird I walk on my tip toes normally?

HEEEEEEEEE

I'm a teenage male and I do this when i'm not wearing shoes, and it feels bad when I don't do this barefoot.
I've never worn high heels in my life and i've done this for as long as I can remember.
It feels normal to do this but i'm curious of just how normal it really is.
Also could this be something wrong with me?
It doesn't really mess with my posture, What I mean is I walk as if I were wearing high heels despite not.

Answer
Hi Heeee, You are not the only male I now know who does this. A friend of mines son walks the same way and has as long as I have known his Mom. She is dead now but her son is in his 30's and I know he was walking on his toes when he was 18 or 19 years old. He also took ballet, for strength, and the fact he liked to watch as well as dance ballet. He is very strong, athletic, as well as a bit eccentric. I have only seen him wear high heels once, for Halloween. He dressed up as the wicked witch for fun. I don't know how he stood wearing her heels... don't know how she did it either. I have only worn heals twice in my life and both times I could barely walk in them. I was and still am a tom boy. Even to the point that I prefer jeans to dresses, and military push ups to the girls version. I don't know too many women my age that can do military push ups either. I hadn't tried doing any since high school... back in the day when Dino's walked the earth....lol. Until recently when the guy who was dating me and said he loved me , dumped me for a younger rich woman....lol. His loss... my gain. I showed him I could do them...then he turns around and says I'll die before him. He's a year older than me. And has more medical problems than me...way more... So he really needs the girl to take care of him and pay for all his meds and other things he will want or need. He's bipolar and has squandered every dime he or his deceased wife ever made. So he needs her money more than her youth. And finding a "real man" won't be hard for me; money is not my concern though having enough to survive would be fine. Rich? eh not so much. Most rich people can't trust anyone to love them for them and not their money. The guy I was dating...his oldest son isn't speaking to him because his Dad told me he was in love with me then took off with this rich "child". His son remembers how depressed his Dad had been over the last 6 years since his wife died. He knew I saved his Dad from a fatal snake bite, stuck by him when he was hospitalized twice. I stayed by his side at night and cared for his sick Dad during the day. Tended wounds when he lost his footing on the front steps and cut up his head, arms and legs in the fall. His oldest son, his Dad's sister, her son, and a few others things he should be locked up for dumping me. According to them I have done more for him than even doctors could do for him. And they are angry at how he has done me shortly after saying he loved me enough for marriage. Now he thinks that if this youngster isn't the "One" he can come back and I will be waiting like a faithful dog. "WRONG!!!" I don't play games. I was in love with him. I never looked around for others to date one time. I don't believe in dating a dozen men at one time either. It just isn't in my genetic makeup; any more than running from bad situations are. He loved his wife, my friend...He was good to her; but I'm not her. She must have thought I was worthy of taking her place.. she told me lots about him.. I guess she didn't think he'd change from kind and sweet to cruel and heartless. Well...anyway.. walking on your toes isn't anything to worry about. The young man I told you about.... with dress shoes on? He walks flat footed. Only in comfortable shoes, socks or barefoot have I ever seen him walk on his toes/ball of his feet.

I decided to look this up and I was basically right it's nothing to worry about..

Toe Walking Definition by May Clinic Staff: Walking on the toes or the ball of the foot, also known as toe walking, is fairly common in children who are just beginning to walk. Most children outgrown toe walking. Kids who continue toe walking beyond the toddler years often do so out of habit. As long as your child is growing and developing normally, toe walking on its own is unlikely to be a cause of concern.

Toe walking is sometimes the result of cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or another genrealized disease of nerve and muscle. Children with autism also may walk on their toes or the balls of their feet, but many do not. So your OK....
Hope this helps you feel more comfortable about your walking on toes.

Psychic Ha

Many of the shoes look pretty frail.

Answer
Runners in this weight range often need good cushioning since weight is first and foremost, a big factor to stress. You need good shock absorbers and stress relievers. Check shoes for sufficient cushioning and support. Make sure they will give good stability to your joints and soles.
It also depends on your foot shape and it's movement. Do you have a normal foot, flat foot, or high-arched foot?
The Flat Foot has a probability towards overpronation of the foot that strikes on the outside of the heel and rolls inward excessively; over a period of time this may lead to different types of overuse injuries. It is normally recommended to use motion-control or stability shoes with firm midsoles and control features that reduce the degree of pronation, and to stay away from highly cushioned, curved-lasted shoes that lack stability and control.
You should wear cushioned shoes if you are a runner who needs maximum midsole cushioning and minimum medial (arch-side) support. These shoes are best suited for biomechanically efficient runners (you don't overpronate), and midfoot or forefoot strikers. Runners who do best in cushioned shoes often have moderate to high arches.
It would be a good idea to visit a specialty shop or a shop that sells various foot wear and accessories for athletes and sports enthusiasts if you're unsure which category your feet fall in. There are several good brands and types of running/walking/athletic shoes, but the key is finding the right ones for you, whatever the brand. I love my New Balance, but you might be happier with a different brand.

What is the best type of EasyTone Reebok shoes?

...LOL jk.

I recently saw a commercial about EasyTone shoes. I was looked on the website and saw a couple different variations. For example, EasyTone Go Outside!, EasyTone Inspire and EasyTone Rush. Can anyone help me identify the difference between these? Why are some more expensive than the others?

Thanks so much!!

Answer
I've been looking for an answer to this too, so I wanted to fill you in on what I've found..

From a review on Trails.com:
"The main difference between the Inspire and Rush on the one hand, and the Go Outside on the other, is that the latter doesn't have any breathable mesh, making it a better choice for wet conditions."

So Go Outside is for the outdoors, specifically the wet outdoors -- simple enough.. But what the heck is the difference between the Inspire and Rush models??! The only thing I've been able to find is that the product descriptions on the Reebok Easy Tone website differ slightly..

For the Easy Tone Inspire:
"Synthetic/mesh upper, with it's RUNNING-inspired design, for the ultimate in lightweight breathability."

For the Easy Tone Rush:
"Synthetic/open-weave mesh upper, with it's WALKING-inspired design, for the ultimate lightweight breathability and style."

This leads me to believe that the Inspire is intended for running, while the Rush is intended for walking. But, the thing is, you can walk in running shoes, too. Usually it's just a difference in support, and Reebok seems to be marketing the whole line as "walking shoes" so that is likely to be most consumers' intent. I found a really interesting and helpful article on healthyfeetblog.com (the direct link is down in the sources) debating the advantages and disadvantages of walking in both running and walking shoes. I'd recommend you check the whole article out to get a full idea of all sides of the argument, but I've pulled some of the most pertinent information for the situation at hand, if your intent is to do more walking than running:

"The Advantages to Walking in a Running Shoe:
...most running shoes are made with more cushioning and shock absorption than walking shoes to prevent stress injuries... In terms of the footbed, running shoe designs tend to emphasize padding rather than support making them good for walkers with high arches, but not as healthy for walkers with fallen arches or flat feet... To prevent sprains and strains, running shoes tend to have stiffer sidewalls and vamps giving them better motion control than many walking shoes... For this reason, running shoes may be a good choice for very over-weight walkers and those who have problems with pronation [the flexing and rolling of the foot]."

So basically, it comes down to your own personal comfort and walking/running needs. This is probably way more information than necessary.. Sorry for that! But hopefully it helps you and anyone else that comes across this question looking for the same info.

Happy walking!! :)

I feel that whenever I get a new shirt or running pants, I really want to get out of the house and just run. I like the Nike shirts, but they cost a lot.
Any stores you know where I can get good running clothes at fair prices?

Thanks ahead! :)

Answer
Most of my running clothes are Nike, although a few are other brands.
I love Nike and I think they feel [and look] the best for me.

I agree though, they are wayy too expensive, which is why I shop at a Nike outlet/clearance store. It's about 40 minutes away from my house but it's SO worth the drive. They have amazing deals there.

I got really nice pants there, that originally would be $70, but I only paid $30. Same with the shirts, socks, shoes, sweatshirts.. everything is cheaper! I love it so much. I also got shoes from there which were originally $100 but were $70 at the clearance store. And I got a bunch of shirts.

It's worth looking around and seeing if they're any around you. Search online & see.. Nike has quality workout clothes and they're my favorite brand by far. They also last longer than Walmart or Target brands do.

Typically, how long will it take to train specifically for a half marathon?

Iamhere

I have been running for a year now and I run about 15-20 miles a week. My longest runs are 5-7 miles usually. I've done 5K races but not done 10K races of a half. I want to do a half exactly 3 months from now(12 weeks). My goal is to finish it without too much pain/discomfort.
Also, it is the dead of winter here in NY, so I'm worried that snow/ice days might ruin training.

Should I sign-up for one? Any tips on training?

Answer
With your current abilities, 3 months should be plenty of time. You could probably run/walk a half marathon right now, but it wouldn't be especially comfortable.

Find a good training schedule online, one that fits your time frame and experience level as a runner. The ones on www.runnersworld.com are pretty good, and there are several to choose from. You'll want one that has you running at least 4, if not 5, days per week.

You just have to deal with winter weather. Dress in layers accordingly, and get out there and do it. If footing is potential issue, they make things you can slip over your running shoes to provide extra traction that are pretty cheap and work well. Missing a few workouts for weather isn't going to derail your training badly.

Will the rubbing alcohol method ruin my new skates?

Mackenzie

For Christmas, a friend bought me Graf Edmonton special skates. I was very pleased until I realize they were too small. My feet would feel very comfortable if they were about .5-1 inch longer. I read about this rubbing alcohol method online, of which you pour some in each boot and wear think socks. I am afraid this method will ruin my skates and it's ability to support me when I skate. Also, are there any other methods that could help stretch my boots? I heard about the ice method as well as shoe stretchers. Thank you;)

Answer
OMG, do NOT do anything that RJ suggested! Graf Edmonton Specials are heat moldable so you can take them to a proshop to get then molded. When you do flatten the toe area a bit, which should give you a little more room. It's recommended that you let the boots set for about 24 hours before skating in them. At the very least wait until they have cooled for a while. If you heat them up by any means and immediately go walking around or skating in them, they will crease and be ruined. If they still feel too short, most proshops can stretch them for you, usually about half a size. If all else fails, you'll probably have to sell them and get the correct size. Incidentally that's an awesome Christmas gift - I have these boots and they run about $700!

Why are basketball sneakers generally heavier than other type of athletic sneakers?

best athletic shoes with ankle support
on High-top shoes, laced snuggly, will help support weak ankles.
best athletic shoes with ankle support image

Beer Farts

Since basketball sneakers are generally heavier than other type of athletic sneakers, is it ok to wear lighter feeling sneakers (running, cross training, etc) to play basketball? What are the risks of doing so? Thanks!

Answer
Basketball players do a lot more jumping, stopping, and turning then players in most other sports. Also, basketball players tend to be a lot taller, with longer legs that put additional physical stress on their feet. Basketball shoes have extra support for the heel, arch, and ankle, so they weigh more.

If you wear lighter shoes with less support, you may be adding to your risk of injury. That really depends on your physical makeup.

Is treadmilling considered a cardio exercise? Do you have to wear running shoes on a treadmill?

Big A

1) Is treadmilling considered a cardio exercise, good for weight-loss from head to toe? Or does is just build leg muscle

2) Do you have to wear running shoes on a treadmill? Or are running with bare feet/shoes better for your posture?

Answer
I've rarely used a treadmill, preferring to go outside when I have to exercise, but I'd think that walking or running on a treadmill will help your general condition, just like walking or running outdoors would.

And it's much better for your feet to exercise barefoot! 'Support' is deceptive and can even be the CAUSE of injuries. Because you lack feedback from the ground you may keep going past your limit, causing stress injuries, and because the sole increases the lever angle you're increasing the risk of ankle injury.

From Steven E. Robbins and Adel M. Hanna. "Running-related injury prevention through barefoot adaptations," Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 19(2), 1987, pp. 148-156.

A number of reports indicate an extremely low running-related injury frequency in barefoot populations in contrast to reports about shod populations.
[...]
To explain this paradox, the authors hypothesized that there exist adaptations associated with barefoot activity that provide impact absorption and protection against running-related injuries. An adaptation involving foot arch deflection on loading is hypothesized to be an important adaptation providing impact absorption. In contrast, it is hypothesized that the known rigidity of the shod foot may explain the reported high injury frequency in North American runners.
...
The modern running shoe and footwear in general have successfully diminished sensory feedback without diminishing the injury inducing impact, a dangerous situation.

And Steven E. Robbins and Gerard J. Gouw. "Athletic Footwear and Chronic Overloading," Sports Medicine, 9(2), 1990, pp. 76-85.

Some authors have concluded that chronic overloading with locomotion is inevitable in modern man because of inherent lower extremity fragility. Accordingly, footwear, such as running shoes, which attempt to attenuate shock waves through interposition of yielding layers between the plantar surface and ground, are presumed essential for safe running, and are also promoted for use during walking. However, this supposition seems inconsistent with reports indicating that habitually unshod humans are not subject to chronic overloading during running. By taking this into account, the lower extremity must be inherently durable, and chronic overloading must be a consequence of wearing footwear, and probably due to increased shock with their use.
[...]
The lower extremity is inherently durable, and, when unencumbered by footwear, it can endure running without signs of chronic overloading, because a vigilant system restrains shock. The use of modern athletic footwear, in addition to being inferior to older footwear in moderating shock during running, renders the lower extremity susceptible to injury because of design flaws introduced by the preoccupation with optimization of plantar comfort.
...
The obvious solution to the problem of chronic overloading in shod runners is to promote barefoot running.

And Steven E. Robbins, Adel M. Hanna, and Gerard J. Gouw. "Overload protection: avoidance response to heavy plantar surface loading," Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 20(1), 1988, pp. 85-92.

...the paradoxical low incidence of similar injuries reported in barefoot populations implies that modern footwear may produce injuries that normally would not be present without their use.

Also a survey among barefoot rikshaw coolies, who run barefoot on pavement all day long, showed none of these stress injuries, after the first period of adjustment:
"One hundred and eighteen of those interviewed were rickshaw coolies. Because these men spend very long hours each day on cobblestone or other hard roads pulling their passengers at a run it was of particular interest to survey them. If anything, their feet were more perfect than the others. All of them, however, gave a history of much pain and swelling of the foot and ankle during the first few days of work as a rickshaw puller. But after either a rest of two days or a week's more work on their feet, the pain and swelling passed away and never returned again. There is no occupation more strenuous for the feet than trotting a rickshaw on hard pavement for many hours each day yet these men do it without pain or pathology."
