What are some good uses for dryer sheets?

Q. I've heard of many good uses for dryer sheets besides using them in the laundry. I put them in the bottom of my trash can before I put the bag in to keep the garbage smell out. I also use the already used dryer sheets to dust my tv and other electronics. I also hang them throughout my closets to keep my clothing smelling fresh. Do you have any more ideas?

P.S. I'm asking this in Pregnancy/Parenting because the people who answer these questions are the most brilliant, resourceful people in the world! Right? ;-)

Answer
It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.

Spread them around foundation areas, or in trailers or cars that are sitting. It also keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.

Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

Eliminates static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.

Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

Freshen the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.

Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.

Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

Freshen the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food.

Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.

Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. Keeps them smelling fresh.

also rub it on your hair if it wont lay down

Are there any magical artifacts in Egyptian mythology?

iwtblj247

Basically, are there items said to have special properties, especially owned by the gods? Something like Thor's hammer from Norse or Hermes' shoes from Greek?

Answer
Brooklyn Museum exhibits magical artifacts
By Adam Rathe
The Brooklyn Paper

Wrapped in rags, bone thin and rabidly obsessed about. No, not another starving starlet â mummies.

For centuries, people have been fascinated by mummified bodies as well as the ruins of ancient Egypt, a trend that shows no signs of slowing. In recent years, Egypt has drawn almost 9 million tourists annually, while movies like âThe Mummy Returnsâ pulled in hundreds of millions.

The writing â whether in hieroglyphics or not â is on the wall: Egypt is hot.

With a strong permanent Egyptian collection but sometimes-weak attendance figures, the Brooklyn Museum hopes to tap into the worldâs hunger for Egyptian icons by opening a new exhibit, âAncient Egyptian Magic: Manipulating Image, Word and Reality.â

The museum even has its own dig site at the Temple Precinct of the Goddess Mut at South Karnak in Egypt. Though, in accordance with Egyptian law, no objects unearthed there can leave the country.

âMany people associate ancient Egypt with magic, and thatâs a long-standing idea,â says Edward Bleiberg, the museumâs curator of Egyptian, Classical and Ancient Middle Eastern Art, citing the Book of Exodus as an example.

Bleiberg told GO Brooklyn that visitor surveys show that people coming to the museum are very interested in examples of Egyptian mysticism. Case in point, a figurine called a âshabtiâ that was buried with the dead and would perform hard labor for the deceased in the afterlife.

âThis is probably the origin story of âthe Sorcererâs Apprentice,â â Bleiberg explains. âAnd this is the same story that was adapted by Walt Disney in âFantasia.â The origin of that story is in ancient Egypt.â

Other pieces in the exhibit, which is a small but powerful supplement to the staggering permanent Egyptian collection, include a lionâs head gargoyle, meant to protect a home from evil; a head rest meant to watch over a woman during pregnancy or childbirth; and a scarab-shaped amulet that supposedly protected its ownerâs heart from revealing wrongdoings at his final judgment. Bleiberg speculates the amulet was removed from a mummy as early as 1820.

In those days, according to Bleiberg, mummies were often cut open so that the treasures buried close to their bodies could be taken. âAt that time people treated antiquities completely differently than we would today,â says Bleiberg, âToday, when we have complete mummies, we will do CAT scans to see what is inside.â

Also showcased is a bronze statuette of the goddess Isis.

âItâs very beautiful,â says Bleiberg. âAnd aesthetically, I am interested in it because itâs three dimensional. I love how her arms come out to you holding the magic wand, which is a cobra.â

Snakes, he explains, are another large part of Egyptian mythology, as kings used them for protection.

âThe Egyptians were very aware that snakes are dangerous animals,â explains Bleiberg, citing a papyrus in the Brooklyn Museumâs collection that holds records of various medical and magical treatments for snakebites. âBecause they were dangerous, their power could also be used to protect against other powers. The Uraeus, or cobra, protected the king when [he] wore it on his brow. It is a regular part of the kingâs protective gear.â

Continuing in their efforts to bring more Egyptian artifacts to the Brooklyn arts arena, the Museum will open another exhibit, âPharaohs, Queens and Goddesses,â which will focus on work relating to the powerful female leaders of ancient Egypt. Presented in conjunction with the soon-to-be-opened Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Museum, the show will feature art depicting Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and Hatshepsut, the legendary fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty.

âAncient Egyptian Magicâ will run until August, although if youâre hoping to soak up some of your own magical protection, you might visit sooner rather than later â it could be bad luck not to.

Any recommendations for tennis/running shoes?

Greg H

I'm looking to buy new athletic shoes for college - and it everyone is telling me that I should buy tennis and running shoes separately (I can't use one for both? :( ) Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

I don't run that often, but when I do it's usually on a treadmill. I also run up a mountain on a dirt fireroad, but I think I'll use my older athletic shoes for that so they don't get too messed up.

In college I'm going to play tennis more often than I do now, and I'm looking for a pair of shoes that will last long without breaking the bank (I'm a student after all!)

Thanks!

Answer
I used to wear Saucony running shoes but I have switched over to Adidas and I'm really happy with them. The running shoes I currently own are Adidas Supernova. I wear them at the gym on the treadmill and the elliptical climbing machine more than I wear them at the track. They are supportive and cushion-y. Adidas has several different varieties of the same shoe, so they can fit runners with different strides: overpronation, normal stride or supination. That way you can be sure that you get the right shoe for you. Not every runner runs the same!

Beware of off-brand shoes and sale flyers! Avoid those Sunday paper ads that say: "Lookie! $29.99 for Nike! We'll beat any price!" Those shoes are cheap-o models that the manufacturers make ONLY for that store. That way, you can never find another pair of Nike Spiffy-Ultras because no other store sells the Spiffy-Ultra model, and the store can lure you into thinking they are giving you a deal. Those $29.99 shoes are made with cheaper foam and cheaper glue and have low-tech cheaper design elements. The show manufacturers are smart; they save the good materials and the good technology for people who can afford to spend twice as much. You get what you pay for. Cheap-o shoes from the sales flyer are just that: Cheap shoes.

I would look online at the various shoe makers web sites, and choose a model that is best for you. Say for example, you choose the Adidas Supernova Sequence 2. Great, that's a regular brand and a regular model so more than one store sells that shoe. Now go online (like NextTag or something) and find the retailer with the best price on that specific shoe. I think you can get a long-lasting, comfortable pair of running shoes if you are willing to spend around 60 dollars.

As for tennis shoes, you can get away with a decent pair of Adidas Stan Smith model or Rod Laver model shoes. Sure, you can pay 200 dollars for Adidas tennis shoes, but do you really need them? Go with the classic designs: They are well proven on the court already. If you are willing to spend 50 dollars, you can get a decent pair of Rod Laver tennis shoes on sale.

If you wear your tennis shoes on the tennis court only, they will probably last you for your entire college career. Otherwise, wearing your running shoes on the tennis court will just make them wear out fast and you'll just have to get new ones.

So, you can get two pairs of activity-specific shoes if you are willing to spend $110. In the long run, it's better for your ankles and knees to have well-designed shoes that are specific for the sport you are doing.

There is no need to spend over $100 a single pair on shoes, unless you are really into the activity and you know exactly *why* you are buying that specific model super-shoe. Likewise, stay away from the el Cheapo model sale-flyer shoes. They may have a brand name, but they're not the same as the "regular" models. The 20 dollar Saucony XM-24 running shoe they only sell at Mega-5 Sports Mart is going to be a cheaply made shoe. You're going to wish you had spent another 20 bucks.

I have ankle pain after I run, I previously had stress fractures on both ankles from running.?

borcap

Last year I had a stress fracture in both ankles after running, I saw a doctor and he did x-rays, mri's, therapy and ultrasounds. I still have pain after I run, it is now in my ankles and rides up my lower leg bone about 10 inches. I am in good health and not overweight. I have never had a problem running. The doc also gave me caltrate and cosamin for me to be able to cope with the pain. Why am I still getting this awful pain? My doc has no clue and I think that he thinks I am lying about it. Anyone have a clue? Oh yeah, I've tried different running shoes also but to no relief.

Answer
From my experience, if you are experiencing pain in both ankles you may have what they call tibial stress syndrome or shin splints. This can be due to many factors, it can be due to overpronation when running, increasing distance or intensity by more than 10% in a given week, muscle strength and tightness issues at with the core, hip, ankle, and foot. Do you ice you ankles after you run? A couple of strenghtening exercises for the front of your ankle, the tibialis anterior muscle are, seated heel raises-sit in a chair and keep the bottom of your heels on the ground and raise your toes toward your head. Stair heel drops-with front of foot or ball of foot on stair drop your heel to the ground and raise back up. (3 sets of 20 with these exercises) Also, make sure that you are stretching your calf musculature. If you continue to have problems I would ask for a referral to a podiatrist!!

What is the best way to begin training for long distance running when starting from a low ability?

Jack

I have wanted to join the Royal Marines for a very long time and I want to begin training this summer. I am a smoker (around 5 to 10 a day) I am asthmatic and have not really taken part in a lot of sports. Although I love rugby, I haven't found the time to join my local club as I am studying for my A levels. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
First thing you will need to do is to stop smoking. That should be your first focus. Running is going to suck unless you quit.

Long distance running is usually defined as any distance over 6 miles or 10km. So if you want to get into more serious long distance running you will have to start out by forming a bas of 2-3 months of regular running. That means around 3-6 days of running per week and getting around 15-20 miles per week. When you get into running you need to allow your body to adapt. Running is a high impact sport and your joints need time to strengthen for the large impact. I think dedicating yourself to running 10-15 miles per week 3-4 days per week, is a great start to follow in the second month.
In the first month I would run 1 mile every other day, and increase the distance by a half a mile per day until you hit 3 miles. This gives your joints enough time to recover and prepare for the second months more serious training.

You also need to go to a good running store and get fitted for a good pair of shoes.

Are nike shox the best shoes for standing and walking all day?

fredgarvin

I have bad feet and knees and i know some people that swear by Shox. Opinions?

Answer
Running shoes are definitely your best bet. I do about 10km of walking on some days, and wear Asics & New Balance trail running shoes. Brand and model depends on many things, including your weight, and the surface you will be using them on.

Go to a sports store and try on a few different brands. Stick with brand names like Adidas, Nike or Asics- the knocoff brands often "fake" technology.

As for Shox, if I recall correctly they work best for heavier people, but having said that, I think they might have more than one model with the same technology.

Foot width also plays a role: Adidas is generally a narrower fit, and New Balance make broader fits. If you have really big feet (UK12 and up) you might find yourself limited in terms of choice, but most stores worth their stripes will be able to order for you.

I will wear running shoes until I die. Even in my old-age home someday I will be wearing my suit with Asics :)

Can women wear boys kids shoe sizes or is it weird?

Well i am not a women but i am about to be 18. But i just bought some boys nike running shoes because i could fit them perfectly and i didn't want to pay 20 extra dollars just for a women's size shoe. Is that weird? Do you think people will know i am wearing the boy's kids shoe. Should i have just bought the women's size. I know sometimes they design kid shoes a little different but they just look normal to me idk.

Answer
If you can get away with saving $20, by all means, do it. I've always bought men's shoes because they are made sturdier than womens and the width fits me better than any womans shoe.

I'm 130 pounds/ 60 kgs. I run 3-4 times for like 20-30 minutes. Then I walk to cool down. I've heard that running can cause severe joint pain and other leg injuries. Is it true? Are they permanent? When is someone in a risk of a leg injury because of running?

Answer
If you wear good shoes, and do not run more often or longer distances you will not have any joint problems related to your running.
Unless someone has a problem that is aggravated by running, normally people with running related injuries are marathoners who run very long very often.

How do you differentiate between a hairline fracture and a muscle sprain in the ankle?

Anindita D

I hurt my ankle while trying to run on the treadmill. I am quite heavy & I was not wearing proper running shoes. I felt no pain for 2 - 3 days. But now it's been a week & everytime I walk on uneven ground or climb stairs the upper joint between my leg & foot pains.

Answer
You would more than likely have swelling (and possibly bruising) with a sprain. All you need to find out if it's fractured is an x-ray.

A few years ago my sister fell and sprained her ankle (or so she thought) a few days later, it was still sore - keep in mind she had been walking on it for 3 days - so she went to the hospital for an x-ray. It turns out she broke her foot in 3 places!!

You better get yourself checked out, because you just never know. Good luck!

Hi. I am trying to surprise my gf by buying her a pair of Saucony running shoes, she has a pair which are quite old but she really likes them so now I want to get a new pair exactly like those. The only id on them is on the label it says that it is style 1229-2. So now I am trying to locate anywhere online that I can get these shoes but its quite hard. Does anyone have any advice? thanks

Answer
Saucony doesn't name it's shoes as numbers. That might be a number that they use somewhere, but it is not the name of the shoe itself. That's why searching for it doesn't yield any results.

Some of major Saucony women's lines are the: Hurricane, Triumph, Ride and Sinister. They have a lot more though.

Even though it is a cute gift idea, it might be better to take her to a shoe store, get her fitted for the perfect running shoe and buy whatever model they have in stock.

Are my feet supposed to form calluses after running?

I've had tryouts all last week, and practice ever since monday, and the balls of my feet (especially the inner (on the arch side) part on the side of my big toes. the side of my feet from the big toe to the middle of the balls of my feet hurt when i slightly touch them.
i've been wearing running shoes (saucony) and cleats.

do my feet hurt because i run wrong?
:(
any help is appreciated, thanks

i play lacrosse, if that helps

Answer
No, you're shoes probably don't fit properly. If you can, go to a running shoe store and have your feet professionally fitted with a running-specific shoe. It is recommended that you get rid of calluses, as the lump of skin can get more irritated.

To get rid of a callus, take a warm shower and moisten the callus for a good 10 minutes. After you get out, you should be able to peel it off with a knife. There is no pain, because calluses are dry, hardened and dead skin. Do be careful to not peel off any significant skin tissue though.

What causes shin splints and what is the best way to treat them? How can I avoid them in the future?

best running shoes high arch women
on ... arches tuscan arches stencil arch bridge arch trellis cedar arch kits
best running shoes high arch women image

T

I have started running again recently and now have shin splints so bad I can hardly walk. I am a 39 year old woman in fairly good physical shape, I work out regularly, not over weight and I have no physical problems short of the shin splints.. I walk on the tread mill and eliptical regularly with out much problem. The problem didn't start until I started running out side. I run on a concrete bridge with a slight grade (incase that makes a difference).
Thank you all for the fantastic answers! With that information I am able to determine that the fact that I am flat footed has a big impact. The shoes were fitted but my arch was not taken into account. I guess I need to go shopping again. :-)

Answer
Shin splints are most commonly caused by overpronation (foot roles in too much at the toe off phase of your gait/running motion). A neutral foot lands on the outside corner of your heel, roles inwards so that it is flat and then roles out on the angle of your toes at toe off. An overpronated foot lands on the outside of the heel, roles in flat but continues to roll in and comes off even with or inside the big toe side of the shoe. The reason this is a problem is that the muscle that is supposed to role you out at toe off (tibialis anterior muscle) is not strong enough to counter the weight of your body that has rolled your foot inwards too far. It continues to pull until it actually pulls itself off the bone where it attaches (this is what shinsplints are - shin splints are not a muscle fibre strain you are actually tearing muscle from the bone which is why it hurts so much and takes so long to heal). The reason why you didn't feel it before is because under less load (walking = less downward force and elliptical = no downward force) your body wasn't thrown into am overpronated position. Now that your are running the repetition of the overpronated state is resulting in shin splints.
To get rid of the shin splints you must first rest the muscle, ice wil help with the inflamation and pain. Next you need to get a really good pair of shoes designed to work with YOUR body. Just going and spending a lot of money will not gaurantee a good pair for you. It would be like buying a Ferarri for off roading - it's a great car but not for what you need. Look for a shoe that is designed for motion control. These styles have a very wide sole through the arch, are stiff if you try to "wring it out", have a very hard "heel counter" and have some type of a "medial post" (usually a dark grey foam of higher density running along the arch sie of the foot). If you aren't comfortable with these terms then go to your local running store and ask them. If they don't know these terms then walk away - they are not trained enough to assist you. A couple of models/brands that do produce some very good shoes for overpronators (motion control shoes) are Asics (gel 2100 series), Saucony (grid stable as one example) and New Balance. Do some research on their websites and they will have pictures to describe what I've talked about.

What causes a foot to feel like you are walking on pebbles in your shoe?

Elar

This feeling is in the area from the ball of the foot to the toes, and across the entire foot side to side. Is there any way to cure this? Suggestions?

Answer
It could be Mortons Neuroma or Metatarsalgia. There are nerves running through your foot that can get inflammation from a variety of things. The main one being shoes with little or no arch support.
You could try a shoe with a better arch support and see if that helps. Or try a drugstore for finding some metatarsal pads to insert in your shoe. In the meantime, don't wear high heels if you are a women or shoes with a narrow toe.
Try icing the area 15 minutes a day, several times a day. If you can, take Advil or Motrin to help with the pain as well as decrease inflammation in the area. If all else fails, schedule an appointment with your doctor. If this has been going on for a long time or you don't feel relief in the next few days, make an appointment. Since nerves are involved, it would be best to seek medical advice if it continues past a few days or is so painful you can't walk.

Answer
A BOB is intended to allow you to get out of the danger zone, move rapidly for two or three days, and establish yourself at your safe destination. Contents will vary according to the terrain you have to travel (urban, rural, flatlands, mountains, snow, dessert, etc...) But there are many standard items that go into a BOB:

* 5 days of any required medication
* Medical Information and contacts card
* First Aid Kit with Basic Trauma Supplies and Moleskin
* 3" wide reusable elastic bandage
* Nitrile Examination Gloves
* N95 Face Masks
* One chemical instant ice pack
* Four chemical hand warmer packets
* Emergency contacts card
* Copies of birth certificate, passport, financial records

(*Lithium batteries have longer shelf life, work better in cold & won't leak)

In metropolitan areas you might add:
* Valid mass-transit fare card
* Map of mass-transit routes/stops
* Pre-paid phone card
* Pry bar

In cooler climates you might add:
* Mid-weight base layer (thermal underwear)
* Outer hard shell
* Mittens
* Balaclava
* Slip-on traction devices (slips over shoes/boots)

In more rural locations you might add:
* Signal mirror

If you have a handgun, keeping it near your BOB with extra ammo in the bag would be a good idea. If not, a canister of bear spray will deter most animals, including the two-legged kind.

What are bunions on your feet?

Alyssa12

i'm fifteen and i run cross country and i think i might have a bunion on my foot...
what are bunions caused by?
what are symptoms?
how do you treat it?
can it be fixed?
what happens in the long term with having one?

Answer
Well bunions occurs as a result of a problem with your big toe known as hallux valgus. Hallux means the big toe and valgus means that itâs pointing outwards towards the other toes.
In hallux valgus the bone in your foot at the base of your big toe, called the first metatarsal, moves out at the side of your foot. Your big toe angles towards your other toes.
There is evidence that people can inherit a tendency to develop bunions. However, it doesnât always follow that if your parents or grandparents have bunions, you will have them too.
Hallux valgus affects more women than men. This may be because the ligaments in the foot (the structures that connect bones together) are usually looser in women than men.

The type of shoes you wear may also affect the development of a bunion. If you wear narrow or high-heeled shoes, this puts extra strain on the bones and muscles in your foot, pushing your toes together and forcing your big toe to point towards your other toes. Footwear alone doesnât cause bunions, but it can worsen them.

Bunions are also sometimes associated with joint diseases including osteoarthritis. However, there is usually no serious underlying cause.

Treatment of bunions Wearing the right shoes, using shoe inserts and padding and taking painkillers can all help to ease the symptoms of a bunion. However, these treatments canât cure a bunion or stop it getting worse. If you have severe pain or discomfort from a bunion, you will need to have an operation to correct it.

Self-help
One of the most important things you can do is to wear the right footwear. You should try to wear flat, wide shoes with laces or an adjustable strap that fits you properly. You may also want to use a bunion pad over your bunion to give you some protection from the pressure of your shoes. You can usually buy these pads from a pharmacy or from your chiropodist or podiatrist.

Medicines
You can take over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to help relieve the pain and inflammation of your bunion. Always follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine. Medicines give temporary relief but they wonât reverse the condition or prevent it from getting worse.

If you have a bunion as a result of underlying arthritis, your GP may prescribe specific medicines to treat this.

Prevention of bunions Wearing tight, high-heeled shoes may make bunions worse. You can ask an orthopaedic surgeon or podiatrist for advice about your footwear. He or she will probably advise:

making sure that the toe of your shoe is wide enough to prevent your toes from being forced together â the widest part of your foot should be in the widest section of your shoe
choosing shoes with a low heel and a wide toe box where you can wiggle your toes comfortably
shoes with adjustable fastenings such as laces, buckles or straps that hold your feet inside your shoe
using soft insoles in your shoes as shock absorbers

What is Achilles Tendonitious rehab like?

Answer
Rehab of the Achilles Tendon

by Kim D. Christensen, DC, CCSP, DACRB

The Achilles tendon transmits the forces of the large gastrocnemius/soleus muscle group from the lower leg into the foot. It inserts into the heel at the most posterior aspect of the calcaneus. Conditions such as tendinitis and tears of this tendon will require appropriate rehabilitation in order to prevent continuing problems and disability. Rehab of the Achilles tendon is easily performed in a chiropractic office, since it doesnât require expensive special equipment or extraordinary time commitments.

Biomechanical Function

Most injuries of the Achilles tendon begin with the report of a recent acute injury; but have actually developed gradually, over a period of weeks or months. These are "overuse" or "misuse" conditions, and are caused by excessive and/or repetitive motion, often with poor biomechanics. The end result is a microtrauma injury â the body is unable to keep up with the repair and re-strengthening needs, so the tissue begins to fail and becomes symptomatic. If it is not very painful (or when the pain is eliminated by pain-killing drugs), continued stress can eventually lead to complete failure, with a resulting acute tear of the tendon.

The Achilles tendon insertion on the calcaneus is medial to the axis of the subtalar joint, making the calf muscles the most powerful supinators of the subtalar joint. [1] Therefore, when excessive pronation occurs, eventually the tendon undergoes overuse degeneration and inflammation. Researchers at the University of British Columbia described how "pronation generates an obligatory internal tibial rotation which tends to draw the Achilles tendon medially. Through slow motion, high-speed cinematography we have seen that pronation produces a whipping action or bowstring effect in the Achilles tendon. This whipping action, when exaggerated, may contribute to microtears in the tendon, particularly in its medial aspect, and initiate an inflammatory response." [2] These investigators believe that the control of functional overpronation with corrective orthotic devices is a necessary treatment for most patients with Achilles tendinitis.

Impaired circulation may be a contributing factor to Achilles tendon overuse injuries, especially with tendon tears. The same researchers speculate that "in individuals who overpronate, the conflicting internal and external rotatory forces imparted to the tibia by simultaneous pronation and knee extension may blanch or wring out vessels in the tendon and peritendon causing vascular impairment and subsequent degenerative changes in the Achilles tendon." (Fig. 1) This "region of relative avascularity" extends from 2 to 6 cm above the insertion into the calcaneus, and is a common site of rupture of the Achilles tendon. This makes it especially important to ensure good blood flow during the healing of this condition.

Achilles Tendinitis/Tendinosis

Itâs not surprising that abnormal biomechanics of the foot and ankle can cause problems with the largest tendon in the leg. Symptoms are usually described as diffuse pain in or around the back of the ankle (from the calf to the heel). The pain is aggravated by activity, especially uphill running or climbing stairs, and relieved somewhat by wearing higher-heeled shoes or boots. Palpation will find a tender thickening of the peritendon, and there may be crepitus during plantar and dorsiflexion. Often, a recent increase in activity levels (such as more stair-climbing) or a change in footwear is reported by the patient.

Macroscopically, overused Achilles tendon tissues examined at surgery are dull, slightly brown, and soft, in comparison to normal tendon tissue, which is white, glistening, and firm. [3] There is a loss of collagen continuity and an increase in ground substance and cellularity, which is due to fibroblasts and myofibroblasts, and not inflammatory cells. [4] This is the reason that anti-inflammatory strategies (such as NSAIDS drugs and corticosteroid injections) are not indicated for these conditions, and actually may interfere with tendon repair. [5] We now know that the condition we usually have described as "tendinitis" is actually better understood as "tendinosis," and is not due to inflammation, but an underlying degeneration of collagen tissues in response to mechanical overuse. [6] This "new paradigm" will help to guide our management of all tendon problems, and provide more effective rehabilitation for Achilles tendons.

Rehabilitation of the Achilles Tendon

When an injury is acute, an initial period of relative rest is needed. Occasionally, the weakened tissues will tear through, resulting in a ruptured Achilles tendon. This may require surgical repair and a period of rest before rehabilitation can begin. During this period, though, exercise of the opposite ankle should be encouraged. Vigorous exercise of the uninvolved contralateral ankle muscles produces a neurological stimulus in the injured muscles (called the "cross-over effect"), and helps to prevent atrophy. [7] Initial treatment should also include heel lifts to reduce the strain on the Achilles tendon, and cross-fiber friction to improve circulation. Complete return to function will then require attention to range of motion, functional strength, and orthotic support.

Range of motion. In addition to appropriate foot and ankle adjustments, stretching of the tight and shortened gastrocnemius/soleus muscle complex is a necessary part of Achilles tendon rehabilitation. Gentle stretching should be started early, putting a linear stress on the tendons and stimulating connective tissue repair. The standard is the "runnerâs stretch," performed against a wall (Fig. 2). Patients with tightness and pronation will often allow the foot to flare outwards while stretching, which forces the medial arch to drop. This tendency must be carefully corrected, with the foot positioned straight ahead and the medial arch kept elevated. [8] Even better is to perform the stretches with corrective orthotics in place.

Functional strength. Isotonic strengthening exercises that focus on the eccentric (negative) component have been shown to improve the healing of tendons and accelerate return to sports participation (Fig. 3). [9] These exercises should be progressed to closed-chain, heavily-loaded eccentric exercises, in order to stimulate collagen fiber re-orientation and strengthening. [10] The patient is instructed to stand on the edge of a stair, do a toe raise up, then rapidly drop the involved heel as far as possible, returning by pushing back up with the uninvolved leg.

Orthotic support. A shoe insert made of viscoelastic material will help decrease the amount of stress on the feet, legs, and back during running. [11] Orthotics have been found to be very useful in the long-term improvement of running biomechanics. [12] While there is still controversy regarding exactly how and why orthotics are so useful, there is solid empirical evidence of their benefits to runners, for both treatment and prevention of overuse injuries. [13] As described above, most Achilles tendon problems develop from poor foot and ankle biomechanics, and control of pronation is needed to prevent recurrent injuries. [14] Custom-made, flexible orthotics are now available that can support the hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot, thereby providing biomechanical control throughout the entire gait cycle.

Outcome Management. The common outcome assessment tool in regards to Achilles

how do you cope with flat feet in the military.?

konala

I have flat feet (really flat feet), but I was accepted into the Marines. Now after running countless miles I have pain in every step I take. does anyone have any advice?

Answer
First, thank you for serving our country. We're a former military family and I know what a sacrifice you're making.

Have you gone to a podatrist (foot doctor)?
Some ideas
Custom-designed arch supports. Commonly called foot orthotics, these are interchangeable among your shoes and may provide more support because they're molded to the contours of your feet. Orthotics come in three types: rigid, semirigid and soft. The type that's right for you depends on what kind of support your doctor is trying to provide to your feet.

Wedge, in addition to an orthotic. If you have tendinitis of the posterior tibial tendon, you may need to insert a wedge along the inside edge of the orthotic to take some of the load off the tendon tissue.
Additional foot support. Your doctor also may advise that you wear an ankle brace or a walking boot for a time until the tendon inflammation subsides.

You really need a foot doctor to help you with this....of course, rest, ice and anti-inflammatories... but they only go so far. Good luck to you!

What shoes should I wear in Disney World?

best walking shoes disney world image

Blake

I have gone to Disney World 5 times and every time I have worn sneakers and when I would I would get dressed, I would hate the way my sneakers looked with the outfit I was wearing. I just want to hear your story as to what shoes you wore to disney world and if it was a good experience or not... Please be specific about brand or style... ie please don't say you wore "flip flops" because that isn't helpful with all of the different kinds of flip flops out there :)
P.S. I walk in Disney from opening to closing and they don't have to be water proof because I don't go on any water rides there.
Thanks for sharing!

Answer
honestly the best shoes to wear are athletic walking/running SNEAKERS. (nike, new balance, easy spirit, champion.....)
what are you wearing that sneakers don't look good with???
sneakers look fine with the types of clothes you SHOULD be wearing such as jeans, capris, shorts, t-shrits, tank tops, hoodies.....

What type/brand of walking show for men would you suggest for a week at Disney World?

troy h

We are spending 7 days at Walt Disney World in May 2012. Both of us are looking into the best walking show for men. A shoe that offers high comfort, reduction of impact, breathable fabric and under $100. Some have suggested Sketcher's Shape-Ups or the Reebok version. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Answer
well i wouldn't recommend the "shape up" type of shoes cuz you are getting a work out from wearing them which can make your muscles so to begin with just with regular walking, just imagine how your muscles will feel after walking in them around disney world. plus you have to be able to feel balanced in them which can be a lot of work depending on where your center of gravity is so not feeling stable would not be a good thing either.

as far as the brand i have no preference. my personal opinion is whatever brand feels comfortable on your foot. just make sure that its an athletic walking/running sneaker. and you better get out there trying on shoes now cuz you're gonna want to break them in a bit before you just head off to disney world where you will be walking MILES each and every day.

I am wanting to buy a new pair of running shoes, i run mainly on road but sometimes off road. I am looking for something neutral with some cushioning but not too chunky! The lighter the better! Nothing too outrageously expensive, just a general training shoe, for running 4+ miles most days a week. Thanks :D

Question about running shoes?

mt025

I have a really high arch. I have been running for about 3 weeks. I have been running with Nike Shocks. Since then my knees have been hurting. Does anyone recomend a light weight supportive shoe for someone with a high arch?

Answer
Neutral Cushioning Shoes
A Neutral Cushioning shoe (Men's | Women's) is best for runners with a high arch who do not pronate effectively. These shoes do not have medial supports but are more concerned with midsole cushioning. The midsole will provide the extra shock absorption that the lack of pronation is missing. Along with a runner who does not overpronate, Neutral Cushioned shoes (Men's | Women's) also work well for midfoot and forefoot strikers.

What causes the average American to not take pride in the way they dress?

So I was just wondering, why does the average American not care about what he or she wears ? Why do they prefer to dress like they are going to play football in the local park, instead of looking professional when they walk down the street?

If I am going to the gym, yeah I'm going to dress appropriately for that. I will wear a pair of jogging pants and a t-shirt cause I'm going to sweat my butt off and lift weights.

But If I'm leaving the house, I put on a nice pair of slacks and a nice polo with dress shoes. It makes me feel good and like it or not, you gain more respect from people if you are dressed professional. This also gives you more confidence knowing you look professional.

I see so many people walking the streets, who dress like they just woke up from a 3 hour nap on the couch and have been drinking beer all day long eating potato chips. Some of them don't even take the time to comb their freakin hair. Women wear their hair pulled up like they have been on a three day drug binge in a basement. I have seen people go to school looking like this!

I take the time to shower and shave before I leave the house in the morning. I take pride in the way I dress. I do this not for anyone else, but because it makes ME feel good about MYSELF. When I look in the mirror I am proud that I don't look like a bum and am a clean and professional man.

Also it doesn't take thousands of dollars to dress professionally. You can go into your local Target and find clothes that will give you a professional style.

I am going to be running cross country for the first time; I would like to know what type of training I will need to do to run a 17:30. I am going to be a freshmen, and as I said, it will be my first time running cross country. I just want to know what type of training I need, if my goal is unrealistic--its better to aim high than low.

Answer
i started cross country my freshman year also and i really had no idea what i was doing. the goal to running faster is just making sure you know how to race. most people race in a style of what is called a 2/3 which is like you take the first two miles at a reasonable pace which 17:30 is 5:39 miles and then crank a faster last mile. the goal is to learn as much as you can about the sport. get good form and good breathing and set your mind on racing. with workouts i'm sure your coach will but you in the correct spot. just make sure to stay up with the varsity group on easy runs. also ask the upper class man how the races go. im not going to lie but sometimes hitting pr's is hard or unreasonable because the xc course could be measured wrong or something. you will probably be seeing hill workouts and tempo runs, fartleks, and maybe some weight room. the goal is never to miss a day and make sure you are taking care of yourself. and make sure you have good shoes. im going to be a sophmore next year for highschool. just learn to run and have fun. everything else will come in time even if it doesnt happen this year. i ran a 18:32 as a freshman and im looking for a 16 flat time this year!

PR:
5000m: 18:32
3200m:10:29

what's the best way to start running....?

if you are not a runner? I want to do more running, but I can't run down the street and not get winded...how do I become a trackstar?

Answer
i think this is a lifestyle choice; it is going to be painful to start.. i'd say before lacing up your shoes, you have to prepare yourself mentally and REALLY want to do this... running once a week only when you feel like it won't make you a track star...

to begin i would set a goal; go online and look up your local listings for future 5k or 10k races; sign up for one that is 10-15 weeks out... then download or set a training plan...

i agree with the others, start slow; some training plans call for time, not distance; run 5 minutes, walk 10-minutes, run 5 minutes, walk 10-minutes... slowly build up your cardio until you can run/jog for 30-minutes non-stop... having a 'race' scheduled can help with motivation and training... i'm actually running my first marathon in june.. the San Diego marathon and it is pushing me forward...

pumpkins.

That are in women's size, under $50 and are good for my events (400m,800m, 4x1 relay, long jump)
that'll ship before thursday! ( my first track meet is next thursday)

Answer
Ah eas question!!! Go to eastbay.com and they have lots of spikes that are named brands that are cheap. I'm a 400 and 800 runner and i love my nike's jana sport ones.

I like nike over the others because i like the spike setting, but if you want to choose a different brand, the brand brooks is AMAZING too! They shoes are extremely light. I have only ran in them once, bu I do prefer the NIKE brand because if you buy a pair they form to your foot great! Also, if you do go to Eastbay, make sure you read the reccomendation for ordering shoe size.

GOOD LUCK!

What is a good, inexpensive running shoe?

shortcake2

I am thinking about starting running. What are the best (inexpensive) running shoes to start out with? (as far as brand and model)

Answer
excellent idea. nothing is better for your physical and mental health than running :)

i've been running cross country since sophomore year of high school; hundreds and hundreds of miles later, i have been through a few types of shoes.
my favorite has to be Adidas Supernova Sequence 3 GORE-TEX Shoes, but they're around $110

for a cheaper alternative, i would definitely go with Adidas Kanadia TR 3.
amazon has new ones (both men's & women's) for 45 to 50 bucks (which is where i got mine). that may seem expensive, but for as good of a shoe as they are, the price is well worth it. all the customer reviews agree with me as well.

they have minimal fabric & are very light weight (very important for running), have layers of open ventilating mesh that keep your feet cool & dry, extremely comfortable, and minimal padding under the heel, which helps you avoid landing on your heel when you run (running landing on your heel is terrible for your arch, ankles, knees, and back).

the shoe is designed to not weigh down your feet like many shoes do, and encourages your feet to be in the correct position when running (run landing on your toes, always).

they have tons of grip on the bottom, which makes them perfect for running outdoors (be sure to run in the grass outdoors, never on concrete. it's terrible for your feet). the lengthy grip also means they will last forever...hundreds and hundreds of miles.

overall, you will not need another pair of running shoes for a longg time.

p.s. if you're ever running indoors on a treadmill, (once you have the landing-on-toes thing down) always run barefoot (in only socks). it's the best thing you can do for your feet

sorry for the novel; hope it helps!!!

I am a server at a casual fine dining spot. My feet and ankles are killing me... shooing pains up my legs to bottom of my toes. I need better shoes. They must be dress shoes and have a nice appearance... but I need the support of a running shoe. Help!

Answer
You need to go to the best shoe store in town, or the next largest place if you don't have a really good shoe store, and consult with someone who really knows shoes. Wouldn't hurt to go to a doctor, either. Maybe you can find out exactly what about your current shoes is causing such trouble. Can't tell from your avatar but I'm sure you're female, because men's shoes don't often cause this kind of thing. If you're wearing heels, that's probably most of the problem. You may have to go to much lower heels, or wider ones. There are dressy shoes that aren't going to kill your feet. They probably aren't going to be cheap but they're well worth it. I have some Ecco shoes, they might be worth looking at, but this isn't something you want to do online. Your feet and the prospective shoes have to be matched in person.

What is the best way to prevent Plantar Fasciitis?

Face on Fi

When ever I run more than 10 miles my feet kill me the next day. I strecth them, warm up, wear newer running shoes but nothing seems to work. Am I doomed with this forever?

Answer
Man I feel your pain. I cannot even walk or stand in the shop for more than a few minutes. Besides your streatches, my podiatrist recomended anti-inflamatory drugs like Ibuprophen or you can ask them for a prescription for Meloxicam which is a newer replacemment for drugs like Viaoxx that were pulled from the market. Also do ice packs for 20 minutes several times a day to keep swelling down. I also purchased Orthotics (Special shoe inserts) from my podiatrist. You can get ones like Dr Scholls from the drug stores but they are soft. The ones my podiatrist sold me were $35 and are like a very hard plastic that when I have my shoes on they press into and streatch the arch to keep that tendon flexible. My problem is that the bone spur resulting from having Plantar Fasciitis is probably too large as it gets inflamed way too fast. Looks like surgery is possible in the future for me.
