After that, distances will shape your mindset on improving your speed. You have to find suitable techniques, to your style of running to achieve faster running times. To improve on your endurance, you need to practice running distances about twice as far as your event.

Running Technique Keys:

Faster Running in General:
Running faster requires - either, a higher out put of leg rotation or running on your toes or both. Pumping your elbows to the back harder and faster is the key to getting a higher leg rotation. However, XC runners should stay away from being too high on their toes - risk of twisting an ankle is too great.

A racing shoe that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. Placing a thin insole in your racing shoe makes your racing shoe feel very comfortable for running in without soaks. Replace the insoles when they begin to show signs of wear or when they are flat in your impact area. They can be bought in some grocery stores.

Faster 100m -
requires 100% application of arms and legs at a maximum output rate.

Faster 200m (curve) -
requires special lean techniques for running the curve at top speed. The straight lean for wide curves and the "T" Torque for tight curves are the dormant lean styles. Application of the 100m running technique is used for the straight.

Faster 400m -
requires strategy, stamina, cursing power and a burst of closing kick energy. Having enough energy to close strong is the key.

Faster Speed For Races Greater than 400m -
requires strategy, higher leg rotation endurance, cursing power, body ventilation and relaxation skills, an on-and-off valve for generating power with your arms and, a final burst of closing kick energy. Having enough energy to close strong is the key. (Your technique is knowing when to use these essentials.)

Faster Hurdles:

Requirement:
One needs to have an ability to go air born in a balanced manner and then return to earth by hitting the ground running.

The secrete to hurdlers' speed is in; the placement of their starting blocks, the rhythm in their running between hurdles, the use of their arms, the placement of their lead leg after clearing the hurdle and, the methods needed to close out the last four hurdles.

The hurdle heights for high schools are:
American Girls - 30 inches and 33 inches
American Boys - 36 inches and 39 inches

The hurdle heights for college and open divisions are:
American Women - 30 inches and 33 inches
American Men - 36 inches and 42 inches

Faster Race Walking:

Requires:
Sustained pressure on the hip joints. One must have an ability to keep one foot on the ground at all times while walking forward after locking the knee joint. Power swings with the elbow in conjunction with accentuated hip swivel provides the power behind speed walking.

How soon can i build endurance - running?

best running shoes under 40 image

anonymous

I need to run a 1.5 mile under 13 minutes. I'm at about 7200ft elevation. I will be taking a fire fighter physical, and need to pass.

My body weight: 132lbs
My height: 6'0.

Also, should I buy some running shoes? Do they make a difference? I have hiking boots, *it's the only pair I have*. I thought the extra weight would help, but probably not right?

Answer
This is for a 10:00 mile and half. Adjust times to your goal.

To build aerobic capacity, you need to run far. But you also need to run fast. Follow this plan for 6 to 10 weeks and you'll increase your endurance about 30 percent.

Perform a 40- to 60-minute run on Saturday at a pace just slow enough that you never feel winded. (Walk if you need to.)

On Tuesday, do four to six half-mile intervals at your goal pace for the mile-and-a-half run. (If your goal is 10 minutes, run each interval in 3 minutes, 20 seconds.) Rest for the same amount of time as each interval takes. (This is what Shepley, the author of this, says but it occurs to me that you might not be in condition to run at goal pace, so run them at your current mile-and-a-half pace and work to getting down to your goal pace).

On Thursday, perform four to six uphill runs at a moderate pace, with each lasting about 90 seconds, and take about 2 minutes' rest after each interval. After your last interval, jog for 10 to 15 minutes at an easy pace.
Good Luck!

How to build up to an under 7 minute mile?

KAREN

I am a 14 y/o girl and my time varies but it's usually a 7:10 - 7:40 mile depends. How do I build up from there and to be sure to maintain an under 7 minute mile. Also I have a knee problem and it hurts to run on track and treadmill so any expert runners have any tips for a more cushiony run?

Answer
Wear good shoes, stay on soft surfaces such as grass when possible..
To run a target time you need to work on that pace, and that usually means to run intervals of a shorter distance with recovery between the repeats.
Once or twice a week you can run repeat 400's staying under 1:45, try to do 5 or 6 with a rest of 2:00 between. You can also do a tempo run once a week where you run at 85% of maximum speed for much of your run.
If you run on grass you need to find an area that is flat without holes or rocks that will injure you.

Carpet burn feel on feet after running?

best running shoes people with bunions image
Q. I have recently just started running every other day. Lately, my feet feel as though they have carpet burn. Just walking around is very sore on the bottoms of my feet. I have proper fitting shoes (rather expensive running shoes, I might add), and I have been wearing so called running socks, I don't know if they are really any better than regular socks though. Anyway, I've tried lotions and ice, neither seem to help. Any ideas? Has anyone else had this problem?

Answer
That's a common problem especially with beginning runners whose feet are smooth and not tough for running multiple miles. The carpet burn feeling is generally caused by friction and is either caused because your shoe is too tight, too large, wide or narrow. Make sure your shoe is ventilated especially if your running on concrete or track surface. Also make sure your shoes are flexible not to hard of a sole. Good brands to run is Asics Gel, Saucony or Nike Air. Try socks that are blister free with good material such as cool max, bamboo, cotton mix or wool. For instance, some runners like Injinji toe socks. Make sure your socks aren't rubbing against your shoe and feet.

The best solution to carpet burn is using runners lube or antiperspirant deodorant on your feet such as Degree or secret. You can use Vaseline too however this would be for more long distance events such as a marathon and if you have blisters or really bad foot problems such as bunions. However, first try if the anti-perspirant doesn't help. This will prevent too much sweating and should cool your feet and carpet burn. Your feet will also smell better. Good luck and keep your feet cool. Keep icing them until your feet feels better.

What is a nice pair of running shoes for someone with bad feet?

Q. I have bunions (one surgically removed) and basically, weak feet run in my family.

If you have a link, that would be great. :-)
A bunion just means the bones grow funny on the outer portions of my feet. How is that gross?!

Answer

tada!

http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/27252/

I don't have bunions but I can recommend New Balance for a running shoe. I run just under five miles, 5 days a week and I wear Adidas and New Balance. I would recommend upgrading your running shoes often, (I give mine 6 months and then buy new ones) and having at least one pair dedicated solely to running. Good luck, Cas!

Brrandd Hu

I play deck hockey. It's a competitive league and I have zig techs. They are not only wearing out but also have very little padding and when I block a shot with my foot it hurts very badly. Anyone know good running shoes that offer padding?

Answer
Just bought some Sketchers Shape-Ups. (Currently SIXTY dollars off at Famous Footwear!)
These things are all padding, hell, I'm an inch or two taller when I wear them! Ontop of that, they're contoured to the ground on the bottom, so they make running a breeze. Lastly, they correct your posture over time! If your FF is having a sale like mine, they should be $60. GREAT investment.

How to hide my shoe laces?

Matthew Di

I just got a pair of reebok zig slash. I've had three other pairs of zigs before but they were all running shoes. The zig slash are high tops and I don't like it when the laces are hanging out. For some reason I just can't get the laces under the tongue. This sounds childish but can anybody tell me how to hide the laces without them annoying my socks or falling out.

Answer
You could always tie the laces behing the tongue. Like tuck them behind, the tie them and they should sy-tay inside the shoe. Otherwise you could cut them but i dont know if you want to do that...

I run on a daily basis, i have one flat foot that i wear orthotics for and whenever i run, my feet hurt and start to numb. I feel like when i run i put alot of pressure on my feet. Would the barefoot running shoes be a good way to help prevent my sore feet? Or what other shoes would be a good alternative?

Answer
The 'toe shoes' wouldn't work because they are shaped with an arch so it would probably make it worse! Sorry about your numb feet, maybe someone else knows something!

What running shoes offer good arch support?

best running shoes to support arch
 on Running Arch Support Inserts
best running shoes to support arch image

Shirley

I need a good arch support in my running shoes. What do you recommend that is light yet offers good support? I have been having pain in the arch of my foot for some time, especially when I get out of bed in the morning.

Answer
First of all you need to stretch your calves in the morning when you get up, a couple times during the day, and at night before you go to bed. The reason your arch hurts when you get up in the morning is most probably (like most people) your toes are pointed while you sleep. This causes your plantar fascia to contract for 6-8 hours. So stretching will help keep the PF limber and over time the pain will subside.

As for shoes. In a perfect world I would tell you to go see a podiatrist (who runs) and get fitted for custom orthotics (insoles fit to your feet that you can put in any shoes to give you the support you need). I've had good results with Brooks Trance, Brooks Adrenaline, Mizuno Wave Inspire, and a handful of New Balance shoes (but they only number their models and change the model numbers over time so I've lost track of which ones).

Go to a specialized running store and get fitted. (Not Sports Locker, Finish Line, Hibbits, Dicks, or any store that calls itself a "sporting good store").

Best running shoes for narrow and flat feet?

BellaLoves

I have very flat feet (very flat arches) and very long, narrow feet. I have always had a problem finding secure running shoes that support my arches into the correct position, and are snug around my entire foot.

I have knee problems because of this, so a good running shoe will help prevent furthur injury to my knees and feet.

Do you know of any running shoes that specilise in shoes for flat footed runners?

Answer
You need in insert to correct your flat feet, either something off the self or made by a foot doctor.
New Balance makes shoes with widths just like street shoes so you can find your size in that brand.

Answer
Food for thought:

Information about some running shoes and spikes for hardcore runners:

Key for running shoes -

The better the shock absorption is the better the shoe is. Whenever possible, it is best to try them on before a purchase.

An ideal shoe will fit your foot like a slipper. Your running shoes are the key to staying injury free. Knowing how to use them will enhance your speed. You can wear any type of shoe you want for training in. But you should have a second pair of shoes just for racing in.

Oversize Trainers To Improve Your Speed -
The best type of trainer to wear is one that is either a half or full size too large for your feet. Buy a high quality cushion inset sole and place it in the shoe. This gives your feet added shock absorption protection. This could be a big help against Shine Splints. If one foot is longer than the other, buy the trainers based on the longest foot.
Except for hurdlers practicing their hurdle form, use this shoe for all of your running practices, including high speed sections. When you change shoes for races, you will find that your feet feel light and that your race time results are constantly on the speedy end of your speed range.

Shoes For Racing In:
A racing shoe (flats or spikes) that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. These shoes are normally very light but do not support your feet like trainers. You can make many brands of racing shoes feel very comfortable for use without soaks by placing a thin, soft cushion, flat insole in it. Replace the insoles when they begin to show signs of wear or when they are flat in your impact area. They can be bought in some grocery stores. If you use arch supports, place it in your racing shoe too. If one foot is longer than the other, buy this pair of shoes based on the shortest foot. However, if the toes on the longer foot are knuckling up in the shoe, then the shoes are too short - get a longer pair.

Hurdler shoe issue:
Shoes play a huge part of helping a hurdler be fast, especially in the short distance hurdles. This is not practical, but hurdlers need three pairs of track shoes. They need their proper foot fitting racing spikes, they need a pair of proper fitting running shoes for hurdle work practices only and, they need their oversize comfortable running shoes with extra cushion protection for all other running activities.

Wearing Spikes To Train In:
There are times when using spikes in a training section is very important to the athlete. Sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters, javelin throwers; long, triple and, high jumpers should wear their spikes when trying to calibrate their steps and starting block position. Once the measurements have been established with your spikes on, take them off and put on your trainers. Use your trainers to find the location of your established starting points. The order of finding your points should be with spikes first and then with trainers, never the other way around. This is because trainers vary too much in size, shape and, length for the same size foot - change your trainers and you change the deminsion of your foot. For this group of people, knowing how to find your precise starting points with your racing shoes on, assures you a consistent range of high end results for your discipline.

No, I use Dr. Scholl's Gel inserts and find that these really help prevent me from getting sore on the soles of my feet
These cost around $10 or so.

What makes me hate people who disrespect Aspies more than other disrespects in general?

?

I have Asperger Syndrome myself. I never had a big problem with homophobes or bigot Christians and I would even fool around with that; I'm gay and atheist. But whenever someone has to mention my condition my blood begins to boil. People treat us like the village idiot. A question here "Are all asperger people ugly?' nearly had me to meltdown.

So like I said; I never had an issue with homophobes, but whenever I find someone being rude towards people like us I just want to see their entrails ooze to the floor. I especially hate it when the people who know I have this condition try to justify anything bizarre I do with that! I didn't know average humans aren't bizarre. I didn't know Bjork, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Donald Trump have mental conditions for being "bizarre". People seem to think I am just sick, do they ever think that maybe I am just ARROGANT? Did they ever think I am just ECCENTRIC? Did they ever think I hate tennis shoes because I prefer LEATHER DRESS SHOES? Do people have to think I'm shy only because I ONLY SPEAK WHEN I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY? Did they ever think that I hardly have friends because I think MOST PEOPLE BORINGLY ORDINARY? Yet I stay to myself, and I have to hear the feces out of their mouths.

F**k both!
I also hate it when people expect me to be bright. I was a bright child; but I can assure you my 99 IQ is nothing to brag about.
http://answers.yahoo.com/activity?show=TSanNzyyaa

This user was the one who provoked my fury just now. Look how sick and obsessed he is with this.

Answer
The problem is that the majority of the human race is stupid, this means they're not worth worrying about and their opinions are worthless.

I have Aspergers too, I'm quite used to it and it doesn't bother me. Obviously I can't do much about stupid kids writing this sort of thing on the internet but I don't care. I know that I'm a talented and respected engineer, they're just spotty kids so who cares what they think? Of course though if anyone was to say this sort of thing to my face I suppose that I could always educate them about why they shouldn't say such things with a little extreme violence, they'd certainly think twice before trying it again.

I think the belief that people with Aspergers are all highly intelligent is a result of the fact that when we have a technical problem to work out most of us won't let it go until we've worked it out, trying to get us to give up is like trying to take a bone from a rottweiler. Is treadmilling considered a cardio exercise? Do you have to wear running shoes on a treadmill?

best athletic shoes with ankle support image

Big A

1) Is treadmilling considered a cardio exercise, good for weight-loss from head to toe? Or does is just build leg muscle

2) Do you have to wear running shoes on a treadmill? Or are running with bare feet/shoes better for your posture?

Answer
I've rarely used a treadmill, preferring to go outside when I have to exercise, but I'd think that walking or running on a treadmill will help your general condition, just like walking or running outdoors would.

And it's much better for your feet to exercise barefoot! 'Support' is deceptive and can even be the CAUSE of injuries. Because you lack feedback from the ground you may keep going past your limit, causing stress injuries, and because the sole increases the lever angle you're increasing the risk of ankle injury.

From Steven E. Robbins and Adel M. Hanna. "Running-related injury prevention through barefoot adaptations," Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 19(2), 1987, pp. 148-156.

A number of reports indicate an extremely low running-related injury frequency in barefoot populations in contrast to reports about shod populations.
[...]
To explain this paradox, the authors hypothesized that there exist adaptations associated with barefoot activity that provide impact absorption and protection against running-related injuries. An adaptation involving foot arch deflection on loading is hypothesized to be an important adaptation providing impact absorption. In contrast, it is hypothesized that the known rigidity of the shod foot may explain the reported high injury frequency in North American runners.
...
The modern running shoe and footwear in general have successfully diminished sensory feedback without diminishing the injury inducing impact, a dangerous situation.

And Steven E. Robbins and Gerard J. Gouw. "Athletic Footwear and Chronic Overloading," Sports Medicine, 9(2), 1990, pp. 76-85.

Some authors have concluded that chronic overloading with locomotion is inevitable in modern man because of inherent lower extremity fragility. Accordingly, footwear, such as running shoes, which attempt to attenuate shock waves through interposition of yielding layers between the plantar surface and ground, are presumed essential for safe running, and are also promoted for use during walking. However, this supposition seems inconsistent with reports indicating that habitually unshod humans are not subject to chronic overloading during running. By taking this into account, the lower extremity must be inherently durable, and chronic overloading must be a consequence of wearing footwear, and probably due to increased shock with their use.
[...]
The lower extremity is inherently durable, and, when unencumbered by footwear, it can endure running without signs of chronic overloading, because a vigilant system restrains shock. The use of modern athletic footwear, in addition to being inferior to older footwear in moderating shock during running, renders the lower extremity susceptible to injury because of design flaws introduced by the preoccupation with optimization of plantar comfort.
...
The obvious solution to the problem of chronic overloading in shod runners is to promote barefoot running.

And Steven E. Robbins, Adel M. Hanna, and Gerard J. Gouw. "Overload protection: avoidance response to heavy plantar surface loading," Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 20(1), 1988, pp. 85-92.

...the paradoxical low incidence of similar injuries reported in barefoot populations implies that modern footwear may produce injuries that normally would not be present without their use.

Also a survey among barefoot rikshaw coolies, who run barefoot on pavement all day long, showed none of these stress injuries, after the first period of adjustment:
"One hundred and eighteen of those interviewed were rickshaw coolies. Because these men spend very long hours each day on cobblestone or other hard roads pulling their passengers at a run it was of particular interest to survey them. If anything, their feet were more perfect than the others. All of them, however, gave a history of much pain and swelling of the foot and ankle during the first few days of work as a rickshaw puller. But after either a rest of two days or a week's more work on their feet, the pain and swelling passed away and never returned again. There is no occupation more strenuous for the feet than trotting a rickshaw on hard pavement for many hours each day yet these men do it without pain or pathology."

What is the best brand of running shoe to avoid injury?

Ilean

I run cross country and i am buying new shoes but i want a new kind because the ones that i have (assics) hurt my knees. any suggestions

Answer
It is not necessarily the brand of shoes. You need to look at the structure of the bones in your feet. Do you overpronate (ankles roll in when you walk?? How do your shoes wear on the heel? You may need inserts for arch supports. Your knees may be hurting because the shoes are old or the wrong type for your foot. It's also a really good idea to go to a running specialty store, not just the athletic shoe stores in the mall.

Would Basketball Shoes be good for Running a Mile on a track for School?

Alex

Im planning to buy some Jordans Super Flys, or Jordan AJ 2012 Lite so i can play basketball AND be able to run a mile For School ( P.E ) and its on a track! I've read something that basketball shoes arent good for running because you wouldn't be running on a flat surface but since its a track wouldn't that be the exception? Also i read that basketball shoes are too heavy, i saw some running shoes that were 18 oz and the shoes i want are around 12. So Would some Jordan Basketball shoes ( Jordan AJ 2012 Lite ) be good for running a mile for school? Thank you so much!

Answer
if you're just in pe who cares.. but if you run outside of just that then no, don't get those.

Let's just put it this way: I do not want to buy a nike running shoe that came out in 2012.

Answer
That certainly should not be the way you choose your footwear. The flashiest shoes might not fit you correctly and you will only succeed in injuring yourself somewhere along the season. In addition Nike shoes generally are not regarded as a good performance shoe company for running. I suggest Asics, Brooks, or Oasis.

What shoes should i get for warming up in track next season? Do i even need them?

Therspker

Nike LIVESTRONG LunarElite+ 2 Men's Running Shoe I just bought these for conditioning and just getting ready for track next year but my mom keeps telling me that since these are $80, i should go buy some cheap new balance or asics for training. what do you guys think?

Answer
If you are just using them to warm up, I agree with your mother.

Asqe Pokie

I have been a strong supinator my whole life - I have years of shoes worn on the outside to attest to that. I'm getting into walking as a fitness regimen.
Thanks

Answer
Go to a running shoe store and say you want running shoes, period. They should have you run in a shoe to see how you run, which would indicate what type of shoe you need. Once they have an idea of what you need they should pull out several models and have you try them for comfort, have you put both pairs on and jog around the store to see which you like best. They should be half a size to a full size larger than your street shoes. If you go to a shoe store and they don't ask to see you run first thing to get an idea of your needs, find another store.
Good luck!

anyone recommend good running shoes for supination or underpronation?

Lady Cadil

are asics nimbus 11 okay?

what else would you recommend ? thanks.
i'm looking for SHOES. i've already got inserts.

Answer
You'd normally be looking for a heavily cushioned neutral shoe, but exactly what you do can vary depending on your individual specifics like arch height, etc.

You should get fitted in a running specialty shop, and actually try things on once they narrow them down for you.

Yes, something like the Asics Nimbus or Nike Vomero would be common, but you shouldn't try to figure it out yourself.

I want to know the best time and info on traveling to Europe?

best walking shoes european travel image

johnsons84

What are the best months to travel to Europe, would june july or august be good? Is it best to stay in Hostels and save money? I am a student wanting to see Europe, most as I can... How long do I need to be there to see a vast majority of the best parts? What are some must see sites and cities? How much money should one bring (estimate) and any other tid bits of info could really go a long way..

Thanks for your time and answers to all.

Answer
May, June and September will not be as crowded, and cheaper, as July and August are the height of the tourist season when most of the Europeans also go on holiday.
The rest of the year is also very well possible, the cheapest fares are likely between the mid January and April, and maybe October-November.

At this time you will need about â¬75 per day, ($US 100) when you stay in hostels and do your own cooking, this will allow you some money for sightseeing and drinking and to pay for your train tickets when here.
You can do it a little cheaper if you do not spend much money on being a tourist, also when you go to the countries that have been communist in the past.
An other way to save money is not to stay in hostels but to stay in peoples homes, you can get contact through couch surfing sites:
http://www.couchsurfing.com/
http://www.hospitalityclub.org/
I have never done it, but people who travel that way say they really enjoy it.
Otherwise hostels are a good cheap choice, camping, while possible is not as easy when you travel by bus or train.
In July and August most hostels fill up 100% and you might have to book ahead or find other places to stay.
But even then the hostels out of town near the Capital cities still have some space, most of the time so be flexible.

How long you need?
Many Europeans spend all their holidays in their lifetime in Europe and I never heard anybody claim that he has been everywhere.
In a month you can get an impression of Europe, in but a longer time will be better.

Do not try to rush from highlight to highlight but take your time to really get to know a country. Spend a week in its capital city, but also a few days in a smaller town and a village, visiting National parks is almost always good.
Many countries will need more than 2 weeks to see them properly (only small states like Luxembourg or Monaco you can do in that time,)
but it will stay in your memory.
If you have one month do not try to really see more than 3 countries, in 2 months 6 to 8.

And pack light.
Bring as little as you can get away with. In summer that is one pair of jeans, 2 shorts, (or 2 jeans) a handful of T-shirts, a sweater, a jacket and underwear for a week or two.
Shoes you can walk in all day everyday, and a second pair to change into at night and for emergencies, or only bathroom use.
And bring enough socks too.
You will need to do laundry, but whatever you bring you will always have to do laundry.
Keep space in your pack for a couple of new T-shirts, (great souvenirs and very useful,) and save on washing a few days.

Just before setting off you should get the newest version of a good guidebook, I prefer the Lonely Planet series, but as said, right now would be a good time to get a couple of travel guides from the library or a secondhand bookshop.

And read the older questions here, there is a lot of information already, as questions like this come up often. I think that only in this hour 3 questions have been posted that might be of help to you.

How do I go about looking SEXY this summer when travelling abroad?

Hope

Going to France for a week for summer abroad, but would like to look sexy and stand out, not your average typical 19 year old girl.

I already wear make-up (foundation, some eyeliner, mascara), and wear my hair (medium-long) straight.

- What clothes should I buy/bring? Specifics would be helpful.
- Shoes?
- Hairstyles?

Thanks so much! All answers will be read and 10 points for best.

Answer
Short heels (2"). European cities are more for walking, so you want to be comfortable. Do not wear flip-flops unless you will be on the beach. Flip-flops are definitely not out-of-the-house footwear in France. Espadrilles are always a great choice for open footwear.

Wear sun dresses. They are nice and feminine.

Maybe one or two pairs of skinny jeans.

Bright-colored clothing definitely.

Some jewelery, but not a lot. Gold hoops are usually an easy win.

As for your hair, no need to go crazy. Even a chignon or a sleek ponytail will do.

I'm so excited for you. I miss France so badly! Have an awesome time!

Which city/-ies will you visit?

Jamie

I am interested in this model because the look and lacing. I do plan on doing some running in them. Are the comfortable? Would it hurt my mild case of achilles tendinitis? Thanks!

Answer
I like running in them about once a week. I do not know if it will be bad for your feet. It is supposed to help your form though.

what is the difference between shin splints and stress fractures?

Q. Im a senior in high school who started running cross country this year. Im a swimmer so running is pretty new to me. i had to take off a few weeks earlier in the season due to achilles tendonitis and now i have pain throughout my entire lower leg area. It hurts to sit on my feet while bending my legs in front of me and the pain i get after running a mile is excruciating.

Answer
Stress fracture pain is more localized and often runs parallel to the ground when standing. Shin splint pain runs perpendicular to the ground, and runs up the lower leg along the inside of the tibia (shin). They both have very similar symptoms, but instead of a fracture, shin splits are the result of inflammation of the sheath surrounding the bone tissue. Both are the result of the same thing, too much running without recovery. Or you did not do conditioning before you started cross country. You're going to need special souls in your shoes, a better form for running, and a lot of icing. That or allow recovery time between running days. If it is a fracture it will not heal if you continue running.

I just recently started exercising and need a good shoe! I have a wide foot and high arch. Help!?

best tennis shoes zumba
on ... shoes for Zumba other than directly from Nike? I want to find my size
best tennis shoes zumba image

Karen

When I exercise my toes go numb. I have tried, Nike, reebok, nothing works. I don't want to keep spending money until I get suggestions from others with the same problems. I don't need running shoes, I mainly do Zumba, the elliptical, and stationary bike! Help!!!

Answer
Your problem is very common for people with a high arch.

Unfortunately, the running community is self-selecting; the activity is easier for people with a low arch, and shoe manufacturers are happy to go with a majority requirement that makes production easier. Running shoes are more profitable if you don't have to invest in a large number of 'lasts' for different shapes of feet.

What you need to look for are 'cross-training' shoes. These are not made for running, and became popular in the 1980s when a lot of people with 'dancer's feet' (high arch, easy to point, and easy to train for strength in pointe work) started to take up the early styles of aerobic fitness classes. Some sports, such as Tennis, are more easily played in a shoe of this shape; the springy high-arched foot is good at changing direction rapidly, and these shoes support that type of movement.

As other types of more extreme class took over the market, the shoes became less important, but they are still made, often as a specialised 'wide-fit' commodity. In reality, they are NOT wide-fitting, but because your high arch produces a shortened footprint, your normal foot width seems overly wide for the shoe size that fits your length of foot.

Sometimes, a regular-shaped pair of shoes will adapt to the shape of a high-arched foot if the right shape of 'arch cookie' is fitted to the insole.

Try websearching 'wide-fitting shoes' or 'sport-specific tennis shoes'.

Questions about starting Zumba!?

spot26

I'm thinking about trying a free Zumba class, but I'm SO nervous. I'm really not in shape at all (unless you're one of those people that counts "round" as a shape), so I'm concerned that I won't be able to keep up. Has anybody out there been in that position before? How did you deal with it?

Couple of other questions:
- I've heard that you should wear dance or cross-trainer shoes. Is it ok to wear regular tennis shoes for my first class? (no time to go buy new shoes before tomorrow morning!)
- What kind of clothes should I wear?
- What all do I need to bring with me?
- Any other info you have on your personal experience with Zumba would be a great help!

Thanks!

Answer
-You can wear tennis shoes for the first couple of lessons and then ask your instructor what she prefers. Se might just say tennis shoes are fine.
-Wear good shoes. Wear a shirt,t shirt, and sweat pants. Depending in what you feel most comfy, you can wear right or little loose.
-Definitely brim water. At least one bottle for every 45 mins you're there. Also bring a towel if youd like. Oh and some like to take those "coins" you wrap around your waist that make noise.
-it's an awesome in way to lose weight and get in shape! Been doing his for half a year and I'm noticeably different.
