I wear custom orthotics, does it matter what kind of running shoes I buy?

best running shoes to wear with orthotics image

Ian W

My doctor told me that since I have custom orthotics that I no longer have to worry about buying motion control/stability type running shoes. Is this true? I hope so because these tend to be the ugliest running shoes out there.

Answer
Are they hard orthotics? I have hard orthotics and I was unable to run in them; my foot was impacting a hard surface (the orthotic), so I was not getting the cushioning the shoe offered.

If you have soft orthotics, then you in much better shape! The orthotics should provide the extra support you need.

However, the orthotics were likely made from static measurements, meaning you stood there and had a form made, or you walked on a pressure sensitive mat to determine your foot motion. This kind of measurement does not account completely for the high-speed, high-impact environment your feet encounter when running.

So you may not need the heavy-duty motion control shoes, but you may need some motion control, especially if you run fast or are heavy. Try the shoes, run in them in the store, see what feels right. If you go to a running shoe store, you should find some people who run and have experience fitting people with unique feet.

Types of shoes to wear with custom made orthotics?

Kiosks

I just got custom made orthotics, but only running shoes feel best. I want to wear flats that are in style or sneakers from DC brand. I'm not sure if it look good or will fit properly. Any brands of shoes that are very cute? Do Toms work or something?

Answer
Hiiiiii, how are you?

Well I have feet problems too and I have to wear orthodics too! I wear whatever shoe I want to but it would probably be best to wear something with a back that covers your heel. So NO FLIP-FLOPS sadly :( And I ALWAYS wear my Toms! Just put the orthodics in them and you're good to go! As long you don't walk everywhere barefooted, then I think it would be OK. And always remember to wear the orthodics when you wear shoes!

Hanna

I need a new pair of good running shoes for gym and am choosing between Nike and New Balance. I have run only indoors on treadmill, aerobics, strength training and crossfit types of exercise. Whats a better name?

What you do suggest?

Answer
You need to buy running shoes based first and foremost on fit and function -- almost as if blind to things like brand and price when you're making your early-round decisions.

Every brand has some great models and some real clunkers out at any given time, and things that work great or horrible for others can easily be a very different experience for you.

Get fitted in a running specialty store. If you buy based on brand first, you're almost certain to end up with a shoe that's not your ideal. And unless you're "running" in a fashion show, you should be caring a lot more about function over things like brand name.

Can someone help me find good running shoes for my husband?

jess29

I'm trying to find some new running shoes for my husband and I know nothing about athletic shoes. He'd use them working out by running on a treadmill. I'm trying to spend less than $50. Help!

Answer
just buy him a gift certificate for whatever store you like then he can get the shoes he wants.

it's not as nice as the actual gift but it's more practical and he can get the kind and size he wants.

women running shoes size 10.5 image

Vyper

Recently I have been wearing school girl skirts and kilts outin everyday life as if they were kilts. I have not had much of a negative reaction from it and a few seem to really like it. I am in shape and I wear them with black knee high socks, black shoes , and usually a shirt from Express or Aero to match the color of the kilt/skirt. I was wondering what people of different ages thought about this. BTW I am 22.

Answer
Absolutely! Here´s why.... First congratulations! You are obviously a sexually "secure" guy (most guys have a touch of homophobia and would not be caught dead in a skirt thinking that will somehow make them gay). Nothing could be further that sort of thinking. Gays don´t wear skirts and if you want to look like a woman ...wear pants! You are NOT a cross dresser when wearing a skirt with guy clothes. Your obviously not trying to impersonate a woman. It will be obvious you are a guy. In fact you are a "real guy" since most guys are mentally too weak and closed minded to sport a skirt.

A KILT IS a SKIRT by definition so call it what it really is... a SKIRT! A kilt is just a particular TYPE of skirt that is usually tartan, heavy, and costly. Guys can easily sport a mini skirt. Fact: A regulation pair of men's gym shorts for the last 50 years are about 12" long and that is the same length as mini skirts sold in family department stores and a micro mini at about 10.5" long is the same length as some men's running shorts soooo... "mini" doesn´t mean TOO short for anyone!

Here´s some guys in skirts. Most are short because it improves mobility, and cooler on a hot day. Nothing is less restrictive than a short mini skirt. You will not wear shorts again on a hot summer day once you try on a skirt that fits. Your looking at Kilt like skirts but you should also look at "Cargo Mini Skirts". These have lots of pockets, generally plain (no girly designs), have belt loops, and look great not to mention very practical. There are so many for women some look really great on guys. http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/22064674

Notice these guys still look like guys just as women in pants still look like women! You have discovered something most guys are afraid to try... Makes far more sense for the male anatomy than for a female so Western Society has it backwards! Most women have no problem with a skirt on a guy and in fact find him "intriguing". A skirt on a guy is often a "chick magnet"! You will get more action than the jocks but you probably already know that.

You will see from the photos above all ages are involved. There's lots on the web about "men in skirts" so offer your two cents of experience to help make skirts an option for the guys boring boring wardrobe that hasn´t changed in more than a hundred years! Men have worn skirts longer than women throughout history. Today in 70% of the world skirts ARE an OPTION to pants for men. It's just the western world that has its head in the sand and has closed minds yet women with their open mind adopted mens pants not that long ago. A skirt is as unisex as pants and clearly not specific to one sex or the other so anyone can wear a skirt.

Check some of these "kilts": http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=mini+kilt&_sacat=0&_odkw=tartan+mini+kilt&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

This summer try a "Cargo Skirt" at the beach or wherever instead of shorts .... you will get compliments for sure and enjoy true comfort most men know nothing about.

do the larger sized Christian Louboutins run true to size?

Q. I am a 10 to a 10.5 in general. I am looking into buying the christian louboutin simple pump in either 70mm or 85mm. Would I order a 40.5, 41, or 40? I don't know how they run at all. Suggestions please.

Answer
I am ussually a 9 in shoes. So i went to neiman marcus and tried on a pair of Louboutins and the women worker there said they ran small, so I got a size 39.5 , which would be a 9.5. I would just go up half a size. But then again I got a pair of flats.... I'd just got to your nearest neiman marcus and try on a pair before you order.

Hope i helped :)

Gift idea for triathlon runner?

Jess

My hubby turns 40 soon and is very excited for an Xterra triathlon he's doing this summer. It will be his first tri, so he doesn't have much in the way of gear. It's a lake swim/mountain bike/trail run race. I'd like to get him something for this event or training. Any ideas from someone who does tri's?

Answer
Shoes, a tri suit, or bike shoes, or bike gloves, there are lots of things you can give him including a hat or sun glasses.

What should i buy for my first triathlon?

Kevin N

i am going to do my first sprint triathlon is september. i have been a runner for the past couple years and i feel like this would be a fun new challenge for me. However, i don't know what stuff i should buy for it. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on lots of uneccesary things that i won't use if i don't like doing a triathlon (even though i highly doubt i wont like it). So what is your suggestion for the minimum of things i might need. thanks a lot!
i need suggestions for swimming, running and biking

Answer
It depends on the specific race you will do but if you are serious about the sport and break it down, you will only need 4 things.

-Triathlon Suit ($75-$150)
-Wetsuit ($100-$700)
-Bicycle ($200-$10,000)
-Running Shoes ($50-$120)

The triathlon suit can be a one or two piece suit but it must be materials specific for the wet and dry environments of triathlon. You can bring several sets of clothes and change into them as you need, but you will lose A LOT of time in the transitions. The trisuit is versatile enough for all three disciplines so you will not need to change your clothes only your footwear. Checkout Zoot, 2XU, Sugoi, and Desoto.

MOST races highly suggest using a wetsuit for the swim portion of the race. The wetsuit will keep you warm and actually help your swim because it will increase your buoyancy and keep your body more above the water. Some races do not allow wetsuits because the water is too warm to safely wear a wetsuit or the swim is in a pool and the wetsuit is not necessary but this is very rare. There are many companies that sell wetsuits and the important thing is to try it on and get a PROPER fit. The fit should be nearly skin tight with no excess areas of rubber; this will create drag and slow you down. Sleeveless wetsuits are typically cheaper and are preferred by people who feel that a regular wetsuit inhibits their shoulders. A regular wetsuit is more expensive but you gain a slight buoyancy in your arms that you do not get with sleeveless suits. Checkout Xterra Wetsuits, Zoot, Quintana Roo, and Aquasphere.

The most expensive investment will be your bike. You can honestly use any kind of bike but you may not get a very fast time. In fact if the bike is too heavy, you might spend all your energy on your bike and have nothing left for the run portion of the race. I am not going to go into too much detail (too many bike companies and parts) but if you are starting out you will want to buy a road bike. It is versatile enough to use for training and racing. Don't forget to buy a helmet because most races will not allow you to continue without a helmet on the course. Once you get started it is a good idea to buy clip-in pedals and clip-in shoes as they greatly improve your efficiency in using the bike.

The last item you will need is running shoes. In triathlon people race with or without socks and there are shoes specific for that kind of athlete. Just use whatever is comfortable and will give the support you need to last the run portion of the race. Checkout Asics, Adidas, Brooks, and Zoot.

You can buy all this stuff online but definitely check out your local bike shops in your area; most bike shops have a lot of triathlon gear too and for cheaper prices. Also find a triathlon club in your area; joining the club typically gains you discounts on triathlon merchandise at local stores and sometimes online. Good luck with your Sprint and remember to have fun!

How do I transition to having outfits?

Nomi800

So since I was 12 maybe younger all of my "outfits" have consisted of a t-shirt, jeans, and running shoes
I'm 19 now and I've finally started to apreciate fashion a bit more and I'm sick of always wearing the same junk and always looking like a slob...
How do I transition to having actually outfits?
Actually it was watching not what to wear that started getting me interested in what I was wearing :)

Answer
You can still have a personal style, but what you're wearing now probably doesn't express your personality.

Start shopping at feminine stores, read magazines, have fun with your clothes! Charlotte Russe is a really great store for women, but aim AWAY from the T-shirts.

You could try A-line skirts, pencil skirts, cardigans, dress pants, bubble tops, trnch coats, ETC!
I don't want to tell you to look just like the girls in the magazines, but you need some class.

You can keep your jeans too, just as long as their dark-wash.
light wash jeans make your legs look wider..

And last but not least, get into the habit of watching what not to wear. They give different proportioned women ideas for clothing :]

Where can I buy shoe soles to attach to my current pairs of shoes?

I have searched everywhere, but I cannot find shoe soles that are unattached to shoes for sale. If anyones knows where I can buy them please let me know. Thank you!

4 and a half star ratings on Amazon. These shoe soles are made from polyester and are comfortable. They can be worn all day long. They are great for running shoes, cross trainers, hiking boots and work boots. They relieve pain & soreness from flat feet, bunions, back and knee pain, and plantar fasciitis.

You can find customer reviews on Amazon.

Here is what one person said:

"I have very bad feet. I purchased the Sole Unisex Softec Ultra Insole in a women's 6.5 size. They were recommended by a soldier who had worn them in Iraq, and recommended I buy them due to my platea faceitus and heel spurs. They are life saving to my feet. I will buy more and more. I HIGHLY recommend." by Jean M. Chalupsky

How to do a venn diagram for this question:?

best athletic shoes for boys image

Oksana

A class of 6th grade boys is surveyed and asked if they were wearing one of more of the following items of clothing that day: a t-shirt, shorts or athletic shoes. The results were:
-40 wore a t-shirt, shorts, and athletic shoes
-23 wore exactly two of these items
-57 wore shorts
-12 did not wear a t-shirt
-4 wore only athletic shoes
-7 did not wear shorts or athletic shoes
-11 wore only shorts and a t-shirt
-52 wore a t-shirt and athletic shoes

Answer
hmm this is tricky because there is so much information. i believe you could draw a regualr venn diagram, put the "40" in the middle (because they were wearing all three items) the in thge left circle, include anyone wearing a tshirt or shorts. then on the right side include anyone wearing athletic shoes. sorry if this is inccorect! :(

What are the best running shoes for motion control?

Adrian

I need a new pair of running shoes, i'm an overpronator, and i have a medium arch. Most of the ones i've been finding for overpronators say "for flat footed, heavy runners" i'm definitely not flat footed or heavy, i have a smaller build, i'm 5'8 and weigh 145lb. Any suggestions?

Answer
if you find running shoes that are gray on the insides of the rubber sole, they're motion control shoes.

my shoes are asic gels. all my running shoes are asics but i love nike as well. id go with them.

but dont go to like sorts authority modells or anything. the people there 99% wont know what theyre talking about. go to a specialy running store to get your shoes, they'll find you the best ones(:

What are the best running shoes for a reasonable price?

Xan

Ineed running shoes that won't hurt my feet, or my wallet. Any suggestions?

Answer
Just have a price range in mind and look for a pair of running shoes that feel comfortable as soon as you try them on. Comfort really is the only thing that matters. A pair at the top end of your price range is likely to last a bit longer and you rarely go wrong with a pair of Reebok, Adidas or Nike.

What is the best brand for running shoes?

allison987

I've always worked out often, but just recently started running. I'm thinking of getting into running permanently, and heard that running shoes make a difference...and they're much better than your average tennis shoe. Thoughts? I know all feet are different, but just wondering on quality. Thanks.

Answer
Yeah like you said it's mostly your own preference but ASICS are high quality shoes. You pay for the quality with ASICS though so you'll have to be willing to pay about $100 or more for shoes. Once I tried a 70 to 80ish dollar shoe from asics but I didn't like them, so I went back to the Gel Kayanos which are usually around 130 dollars. They are sooooo comfy. But just because I like asics they may not work for you so other high quality running brands are Brooks, Mizuno and New Balance (a lot of people on my track team wear New Balance) Oh, and for spikes I like asics (ha what a surprise) but I hear nike have high quality spikes.
Best of luck finding the perfect shoe.

P.S. Once you find "your shoe" you will probably buy that model/style again and again

What's your favorite running shoe for long distances?

Annick

I'm a woman (obviously) and a bit of an over pronator. I'm in the market for new running shoes. My previous pair were actually trainers, so I'm looking to get a "serious" pair for distances. I've done some other research online and plan on going to a running speciality store and all that. But I want to hear some other people's opinions about what works for them. Can you give me a hand?

Answer
ok, when buying running shoes there are two things u need 2 look 4: cushioning (more cushioning is needed 4 ppl w/ a larger build or who are prone to injury) and stability (u need moderate stability if u overpronate) If you are a woman w/ a normal build then here are your best options:

1. saucony omni moderate
2. new balance 767 or 1223
3. mizuno alchemy or nirvana
4. brooks adrenaline gts
4. asics 2120 or kayano

the vast majority of nike and adidas shoes are made for neutral runners (ppl who do not pronate at all). so niether of these brands will be suitable for you.

I just joined track and wonder what kind of women's shoes i should get for the sprint and that I can wear for practice that also involves a lot of running around. Also wondering if anyone had suggestions on where/what spikes I should get and how to pick them.
If you have any other suggestions about track they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
~Qwerty

Answer
Good shoes are absolutely key to avoiding injuries while running. Every person's foot is different, and if you pick the wrong shoe for your foot you're going to start seeing ankle, knee, calf, thigh, hip, and shin problems. Everybody runs differently and you need to find a shoe that matches your running style that's why I don't strongly suggest buying Adidas, New Balance, occasionally Nike. Because even though the shoes look cool they are made with a one-size-fits-all format and have a very neutral sole, and also, just because a shoe is comfy doesn't mean its good for you. I suggest going with a minimalist shoe, if you don't know what that is picture a pair of track spikes without spikes, these shoes are very light and comply more with your natural running style helping you avoid any more leg injuries.

Try looking here: http://www.brooksrunning.com/womens-pureâ¦

Minimalist shoes will also help prepare your legs for running is spikes so that the transition isn't quite as painful. Really, any spikes will do. They tend to be pretty expensive, around $80-100 but they're very durable and will last you for awhile. Try looking here: http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/?l=shop,pwp,c-1+100701/f-10001+12001+4294966968+4294967132

Selecting a good pair of running shoes comes down to pronation. This term simply refers to the degree your foot rotates toward the inside when you run. There are two kinds of runners: One who has too much pronation (whose foot rotates too much while running) and one who has insufficient pronation (whose foot barely rotates inward when running). The best way to get a pair that is right for you is by visiting a shoe store that emphasizes selling running shoes. These stores usually have a knowledgeable staff that will even let you try running around in the shoe. The employees at the stores are usually very helpful and knowledgeable and will help you pick out a shoe that is right for you. Hope that helps! Feel free to message me if you have anymore questions!

When my knee goes out it feels like I popped it out of place even though I really didn't. What can I do to get it back "into place", so to speak?
I have no insurance. i was told i should see a physical therapist and maybe get surgery, but that is not possible now. I am looking for more home remedies for temporary relief.

Answer
Because women have wider hips, the upper-leg bone of a woman enters the knee at a greater angle, which twists the knee. This makes women more vulnerable to certain types of kneecap injuries, such as chondromalacia (in which the smooth layer of cartilage that coats the end of the thighbone becomes roughened or cracked), as well as problems with the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

if your knee problems are the result of overuse, lack of use (or "weekend warrior syndrome"), or improper training rather than injury, you can use the strategies and home remedies

Stay trim. Being overweight stresses all the joints of the body, but carrying around those extra pounds is particularly tough on the knees, because with every step, you exert on your knees a force equal to one-and-a-half times your body weight. When you run, the force is five times your weight. An extra 20, 30, 40, or more pounds of body weight (usually from body fat) can really stress the knees.
Avoid "knee-busting" activities. Deep knee bends and squats may feel like great fitness boosters, but they're too hard on the knees. So is kneeling, especially on hard surfaces.
Buy the right shoes. Wear the lowest heel possible. The body can tolerate a heel of about one inch; higher heels throw the body forward and stress the knees.
Look at your feet. A common cause of knee problems is overpronation, or rolling inward of the foot. A certain amount of pronation is normal, but too much can cause knee problems because it throws the knee out of alignment.
and most importantly drink a lot of water it helps ease the friction and do calves stretching and hip stretching, it makes your muscles ready to carry more tension off your knees.

hope i helped

I'm a freshman in high school and I just joined track because I love running. Anyways, here are my times for my first races.
200m- 1)35.6
2) 35.1

I know they are not the best. I plan on getting lighter shoes and running everyday. How can I improve my times and what shoes can i get under $50? Thanks

Answer
I'll be brutally honest. Yes they are slow.

First off you need to build base because those times show you struggle. Base is just endurance, so just go out running easy, it's not a race, and this will get you a better aerobic fitness level, allowing you to absorb more oxygen efficiently, allowing you to sprint faster for longer.

After you're in better shape from base you need speed. Best way is to do distances shorter than your race 50/75/100/150/175 meters but FASTER than your race pace. This builds your overall speed so you will get used to the speed required to race and win.

After that you need lactate acid threshold, so do distances longer than your race, but slightly slower then your race pace so you can "feel the burn" and get used to it and repress it. Try 250/300/350/400/500 meters at a slower pace.

Good luck.

I'm a high mileage runner and need a new stability/very cushioned running shoe. What do you suggest?

Myrtle

I need cushion on my forefoot and the rest of my foot. I run in Nike Equalon 2+ and they are too squishy and flatten out after just 50 miles. I loved the straight Nike Kantara and Nike Equalon+, but they are discontinued. Please help!

Answer
Well since you know that you need a stability/ very cushioned running shoe, then you probably already know that the skylon is definitely not for you. Its a neutral shoe with medium cushioning.

Since you want a shoe with extra cushioning, the following would fall under what I like to call the Cadillac running shoes series: Asics Kayano, Nike Equalon, and the Brooks Infiniti. I highly recommend the Brooks Infiniti. It is definitely the most cushioned stability shoe on the market. And since its a Brooks Shoe, it is guaranteed to last you at least 350 miles before you start to feel the "bounce" diminish.

Hope that helps. Oh and I'm a collegiate runner who also works in a running specialty shop, so my suggestions aren't unfounded.

When i was 14 i got pregnant by my sons dad he was 23, he ran thinking he was getting in trouble i guess and never supported me at all until he found me on fbook and met him for the 1st time at 12 1/2 yrs we got together for my sons sake we stayed together until he was 13 (a year) we separated and our son wanted to stay with his dad nd so i completely took care of our son for 12 yrs he has taken care of him for 10 mnths and i still by most all his clothes, shoes, school supplies and think his dad dont need child supporrt cuz he"s got a mom with a substantial trust fund and she ays all his bills such as rent, cable, cell phone, internet he only pays for electric most of the time, he has a full time job making 10.00 an hour nd only pays power and ciggs nd i pay for our sons needs and he gets foodstamps cuz he dont tell them his mom pays everything and i buy everything else our son needs, just need to know if my son can get a check from ssi (the one you get that you never worked before to pay taxes in...the free one) 698 a mnth also if they cn take money out of my ssi for child support and what percentage do they take. ga can only take 25.00 per child.plz help going to court sept 4 2012 and need to know what to tell the judge
ok for the guy who was saying ssi isnt free i know that its just a slang term in the south. I got my ssi before i could pay any taxes in since I got a severe brain injury at 17, I can function well when it comes to taking care of myself and my child , I also had help from my ex husband when our son was growing up (not my sons dad), I had gotten married when i almost reached 18 then divorced after 7 years. I was single again until 2010, when our son was 12 my sons dad found me and we tried to make it work for my son, when he turned 13 we split up , his dad never ever paid support ever. and was 14 when i got pregnant and his dad was 23. thats te best i can write it out sorry im not able to write perfect im disabled

Answer
This is mostly gibberish, but I did catch where you believe SSI is free. You couldn't be more wrong. That comes directly from tax payer dollars. I think most of us are happy to help someone who cannot work due to a disability, but please don't think it is free. We support you.

Now if you want to try to re-write this, using paragraphs and punctuation, I would be pleased to help you review the pertinent laws.

AFTER head gasket repair, my car hesitates, has minimal power, burns oil, and smokes out the tailpipe. Why?

L.

Head gasket was bad causing cylinders to fill-up with coolant. Paid a mechanic who claims he replaced head gasket, cleaned out the sludge, replaced timing belt, spark plugs, cap and rotor. Mechanic returned car saying he needed to adjust the valves and do an oil change. He said smoke WOULD come out of the tailpipe for the first 100 miles due to all the sludge he cleaned out of the engine. I then started the car which idled fast like a race engine. I then drove it on the highway, exited highway and entered the highway which was uphill. The engine hesitated then suddenly 'kicked-in' and smoked fairly bad out the tailpipe. Car consumed gas after this first drive but seems to be consuming as it normally had done BEFORE the blown head gasket. The hesitating progressed each time I drove the car along with loss of power. Occasionally smokes from the tailpipe AFTER driving car a couple of miles SOMETIMES. I've added one (1) quart of oil after driving approximately 60 miles. Coolant levels remain level--doesn't appear to be losing coolant. Mechanic has and continues to AVOID my calls and text messages pleading for his help since he returned my car to me 7-27-12. On 8-9-12, a friend adjusted the FAST idle and told me the timing was way off. On 8-11-12, I found a mechanic who did a compression test and said ALL cylinders tested 'good', ALL at 100 (?) I believe that is what he said. He believes the valve seal(s) are leaking and suggested I continue to drive it to look for employment which I've been unable to do past 8 weeks due to this car issue---I am a single mother with a 3 year old. I've spent almost $1500.00 since 6-2012 and have barely any money to continue paying these mechanics here in Belton, Missouri.
All of this started with a rough idle on a cold start the first 10 seconds then the car ran fine. It has been suggested that I put another engine in which will cost approximately $600.
I do know that I DREAD driving it while it hesitates, has little power, occasionally smokes, sucks LOTS of oil, and just basically makes me cry the entire ride.
ALL suggestions, comments, etc. welcome.
1994 Honda Civic DX (EH2). Engine Type: D15B7: 1500 SOHC 16-valves, multi-point, fuel-injuncton, 100 HP engine, water-cooled, 4-stroke SOHC, gasoline engine, in-line 4-cylinder, transverse mount. Purchased May 1994 with 13 miles on it. Current mileage: 155,320. *as of 8-12-12 @ 2:22 PM CDT, the so-called mechanic who did the blown head gasket repair will NOT answer my calls/text begging for help. He has sent 2 media text messages containing cut-downs, boo-hoo's, etc.
Should I just keep driving this car while it continues to lose power, consumes oil, hesitates accelerating and occasionally smokes out the tailpipe? Is there anything that can be done to run better than it is now?
Anyone have any comments or suggestions? Please

Answer
You forgot to mention what kind of car this is. I'd also like to know how many miles are on it. These symptoms, besides the oil burning, indicate that the timing is off. The mechanic may have installed the belt "one tooth off" and realizes it after your reports of poor performance which is why he is avoiding you. He, at the very least, should bring your car in to check for this at his expense. Any quality mechanic guarantees his work. You may have to get tough with him and threaten to file a suit in small claims court. The oil burning puzzles me. Nothing the mechanic claims to have done should have caused this. Was it burning oil at all before he worked on it? Bad valve guide seals will cause oil burning but the smoke is usually only visible at startup. I know that money is short but were I in your shoes, I would find a reputable mechanic and have a thorough examination done to find out exactly what is causing these problems - and by thorough, I mean just that. He should keep the car overnight so a "leakdown" test can be performed to check the quality of the head gasket job. The engine number should also be checked (sometimes you have to think like a crook) to make sure it is the same one the car had when you brought it to the first mechanic. I would then give the him (the mechanic who changed the head gasket) a chance to make it right. If he refuses or fails in his attempt it's time for small claims court. BTW, there are reviews and listings of reputable, local mechanics here:
http://www.cartalk.com/mechanics-search
Also; Bandit is correct. All of these things are normal procedures during a head gasket job. Furthermore, sometimes it is recommended that the head bolts be replaced as the old ones will stretch. Check your invoice.

What kind of shoes should a guy buy?

Rick B

I've always worn dress shoes to work and tennis shoes everywhere else. I'm tired of wearing tennis shoes with jeans and shorts and want something a bit more "in".

What should a guy wear with dockers, jeans, or shorts? When in a casual setting? I don't want to spend over $100 a pair and would prefer to stay under $50. Anyone have any advise? Can you point me to some pictures on the 'net?

When CAN I wear tennis shoes and what's in there? Are the typical white reeboks still okay?

Thanks from a style-clueless dad!

sweetlady

has anyone ever heard of kissing corns and if so how do you remove them?

Answer
Corns Description

CORNSCorns are thickened areas of skin that form in response to excessive pressure and friction. They are the result of the body's attempt to protect the skin and the structures beneath it. Corns are usually hard and circular, with a polished or translucent center, like a kernel of corn. They may become painfully inflamed in response to persistent, excessive pressure or friction and ulcerated when they rub against eachother.
Types

There are two types of corns. The most common type develops on the tops and tips of the toes and along the sides of the feet. These are called heloma durums (hard corns) and are caused primarily by improper-fitting shoes and toe deformities. The second type develops between the toes and is sometimes referred to as a "kissing corn." They are called heloma molles (soft corns) and usually are the result of bone abnormalities in the toes.

Heloma Durum (Hard Corns)
In many people, the toes do not lie flat, but curl downward. This would not be a problem if the person always walked barefoot. Fitting curled toes into shoes with tight toe boxes is one of the main causes of hard corns. The toes remain curled inside the shoe, and the tops of toes press against the inside of the shoe, usually at the toe joints. Additionally, the tip of the curled toe presses against the sole of the shoe. The skin compensates for this added pressure by thickening at the point of contact and heloma durums develop to protect the underlying structure.

Heloma Molle (Soft Corns)
Heloma molles typically develop between the fourth and fifth toes when one of the toe bones (phalanges) is slightly too wide. Normal phalanges are hourglass-shaped and the tips are wider than the middle. Kissing corns result when the ends of the toe bones are too wide, causing friction in between the toes. This problem is aggravated by tight-fitting shoes. People with normal toe bones can also develop soft corns. This condition is especially common in women who wear high-heel shoes, which shift the body's weight to the front of the foot, cramming the toes into a narrow, tapering toe box.

Causes

Ingrown toenails can develop for many reasons. In some cases, the toenails are simply too large. Persons whose toes curl (congenitally or from disease such as arthritis) are prone to onychocryptosis. Trauma, such as stubbing a toe or having one stepped on can cause a piece of the nail to jam into the skin. Frequent running also can cause ingrown toenails. Ingrown nails can be caused by trimming them incorrectly, causing them to regrow into the skin, by excessively tight stockings, or by shoes with narrow toe boxes. Bedridden patients commonly develop ingrown toenails if the bedsheets are kept tucked-in tightly.

Treatment

Heloma Durum Treatment
Because hard corns usually are caused by a combination of narrow-toed shoes and toe deformities, they can be treated in two ways. One is to wear wider shoes or sandals when possible. The other is to fix the bone problem in the toes. If the toes are flexible and can be straightened, an orthotic may enable the toe to return to a normal position. Small pads can also be used to straighten the toes. These treatments are seldom a permanent solution.

When the toes are not flexible, surgery may be an option. The toe may be held in an abnormal position because the soft tissue around the bones has become stiff. If the soft tissue is released, the toe may straighten. This surgery is explained in the section on hammertoes.

Surgery may seem excessive to relieve the discomfort of corns, but the only other option is have them cut or burned off with a topical acid solution or plaster. This procedure does not correct the underlying problem, so the corns often recur.

Heloma Molle Treatment
People with soft corns caused by excessively wide toe bones can switch to wider shoes with more room between the toes. Usually, however, this is not very successful. A surgical procedure that can be performed in the physician's office may provide relief. The podiatrist makes a small incision in the toe and grinds down the piece of bone that is causing the irritation. The incision is closed with a couple of stitches. The procedure is quick, the recovery time is brief, and most patients obtain relief almost immediately.

Whats better PS3 or 360 and why is this better then the other?

best running shoes 2011 for men image

timberland

I want a reasonable answer I dont want none of this fanboy stuff just give me reasons or details on why you think this console is better?

Answer
PS3.

this is why:

both systems cost exactly the same(unless you get the not-so-decked-out 360): 299.99

this is what you get for your money:

PS3:
built in blu-ray player
rechargeable, motion sensing, gamepad
web browser
free PvP(playervsplayer) online
printer support
life with playstation: connect with other PS3's to do a number of different things, like run calculations on specific protiens to help further medical research.
playstation home: sony's 3d chatroom allows youto customize an avatar and roam around a vast open hub where you can meet other gamers, watch videos, play arcade games, or bowl, even visit areas, based on your favorite games, called gamespaces.
built inwireless network card
remote play using PSP: access music, videos, picures, basically anything except games themselves from your PS3, usng your PSP. sometimes though, it works in reverse. example:

assassin's creed bloodlines psp: weapons from felled bosses can be used by ezio in assasin's creed 2
or
gran turismo psp, any upgraded or unlocked cars can be ported from the PSP into gran turismo 5 for PS3.

360:
wireless controller(batteries included on new purchase)
dvd playback
xboxLive: a pay to play service that allows you to play against friends over microsoft's servers. the service also comes with a nice set of goodies(internet radio, cross game voice chat, sky player, etc) for 50.00 a year
free wifi(slims only)

we can shout about who has the best games. it's all personal opinion. and though game reviews aren't necessarily the end all be all, scores from mostly biased 3rd party critics are helpful in showing the quality of content on a system. it's true that the 360 has more games. what you don't hear, is that(like the wii) a good 50-60% of them aren't even worth looking at in a rental store.

360's best games:

mass effect
mass effect 2(comig to PS3 in 2011)
gears of war
gears 2
fable 2
left 4 dead
left 4 dead 2
halo 3
halo 3: odst
halo wars
forza 2
forza 3
crackdown
ace combat 6

PS3's best games:

uncharted: drake's fortune
uncharted 2: among thieves(2009 game of the year)
littlebig planet(2008 game of the year)
god of war 3
heavy rain
metal gear solid 4
modnation racers
ratchet and clank future series
killzone 2
demon's souls
3D dot game heroes
infamous
resistance: fall of man
resistance 2
heavenly sword

now lets look at the rest of this year:

360:
halo: reach
fable 3

PS3:
gran turismo 5
little big planet 2(shoe in for goty 2010)

next year(what we currently know):

360:
gears of war 3
gun loco

PS3:
killzone 3
infamous 2
last guardian
ratchet and clank: all for one
resistance 3
uncharted 3(rumor)

it's not hard to see, that even though the 360 is far more popular, the PS3 is simply, and widely so, a better system.

as far as the online bickering goes. i dont have to pay to play my friends. maybe i dont get all the cool stuff from live. but i dont need that stuff to play MAG or uncharted multiplayer with my friends.

If you google up Friday's (November 4th) "The Rachel Maddow Show" from MSNBC, you'll discover something quite intriguing (cynical too, perhaps) about Herman Cain's "campaign"...if what he's doing is actual campaigning.

This psycho-pseudo-fake-"christian" crappola that these far-right-wingers keep trying to spew like the diarrheal elephant dung that pours from Faux "news" is annoying at best, and dangerous (as in domestic terrorism) at worst. Their fundamentalist tight-shoes version of the invisible Guy in the Sky is a travesty. The TRUE GODSEND for this nation is the man currently occupying the White House, Barack Obama, in my opinion.

As to the Cain campaign (or lack thereof): Rachel Maddow is pretty darn sure that he's punking us and that his entire supposed run for U.S. president is "performing art" (refer to the show itself).
During a GOP debate, Cain quoted "a famous poet" who, it turns out, is POKEMON, the animated Japanese creature so popular in the 1990s. One of his theme songs is taken from the Muppets. His whole "9-9-9" plan is swiped from the Sims Virtual Village video game! His insistance that he is in favor of abortion only in cases of rape or to save the mother's life in a Fox News interview is immediately followed in the very same interview with his declaration that he is against ALL abortions, leaving one of the hosts to drop his jaw in amazement. The whole "It's apples and oranges" makes no sense at all---and Rachel believes that's ON PURPOSE! The guy majored in mathematics, and there is a very strong possibility that he has made a behind-the-scenes wager or a very arrogant and deeply cynical decision to run a deliberately bad campaign that passively-aggressively pokes fun at the American electorate---sort of a "thumb your nose at voters" and spend lots and lots of money just to see if money talks in an American election. His line from Friday on his relationship with the nefarious and far-right-wing oil barons, the Koch brothers, was stolen from Chris Rock in a Jackie Chan/Chris Rock movie: "I am their brother from another mother." Examine his irrelevant ads, too...the guy is PUNKING us!

Hi everyone! I've got a few questions about this years style for college/university students. I'm 20 years old, about 5'8" with long legs and kind of a rectangle (or "athletic") body type. I weigh about 130lbs and am very fit. I have medium ash brown hair with lighter highlights and blue eyes. I'm having a really hard time finding styles this year that look good on me!! I love AE clothes and Hollister but my dark hair just doesn't match the same things my blonde hair did!! Either that or I'm being picky, lol.

I'm wondering what kind of fashions are in style for women around my age (20-ish). I love skinny jeans, floral prints, scarves, anything pastel and flowy. I wear delicate jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, etc.). I wear lots of different shoes like flats, wedges, boots or beaded sandals. I think my style is kind of soft and feminine, no edge or a lot of bright colours. But I'm open to new styles!!

Now to get to the point...I'm looking for some outfit ideas for everyday (classes, dates, coffee with friends, etc.) that suit my style and this years latest trends!! If you could give me a few ideas, websites and/or pics would be great!!

Thanks so much,
Dione

We want to wear comfortable walking shoes and slacks, and will be traveling in May.

Answer
May is still a cold time, so you're not likely to wear shorts. Avoid sportswear, baggy slacks, you can have comfortable clothes without it hanging all out. Avoid loud colours, we tend to the bland. Apart from that don't bother too much about looking nerdy, your camera, book guide, and slow pace will give you away, you are here to enjoy the city after all.

So, as I said, I'm going to buy a pair of Nike running shoes off the internet and I was wondering if there is anything I should know about the way they fit. Like do they tend to run small or large or wide or narrow? I have a big foot so I have to buy a men shoe -- I'm around a size 13 in womens (sometimes bigger), so I was going to order the mens 11.5. But I really don't want to have to return them so maybe I should get the 12? Give me some input! Thanx!

Answer
Hi, Nike shoes tend to run true to size. If it's a running shoe maybe get the 11.5, 12 might be slightly big but if you wear socks maybe you need that, specially since when you run, your feet will get larger or swollen. So go with the 12... mens :)

Do you really wear a mens 12? Wow I think that's so cool! I'm a guy who has a 16 in mens though my foot is actually more of a 16 and a half LOL. We should form a society of REALLY big footed people :DD

If you need help finding a pair of shoes, let me know. I can help since I know some people that help me find such big shoes :)

Do Nike shoes run small?

Jessica

I am kind of nervous about getting these Nike shoes online. I know that Nike shoes run small, but do they run a whole size small? I am usually a Womens 10, but the size 10.5 (in which I would get bc Nike runs small) is sold out and only the 11 is available. Should I risk it? A half a size wont make too much of a difference right?

Answer
It's hard to tell, Shoe size can even be different in the same brand, I have two different style pairs of Nike Shox And one is 11, but one is 11.5 because they were not the same size.
