Sure, but only if you do light running. They aren't necessarily real running shoes. If you want good running shoes you'll have to pay more than $20. Nike, along with other athletic name brands, sell great running shoes. I would look into those. The price range is more expensive ($70-$120) but are well worth the price. If you aren't a serious runner, more of a walker or perhaps do light athletic activities, those shoes will suffice. But if you actually run any great amount of distances, those shoes won't last long and won't provide you with the necessary amount of support as name brand athletic wear will. Hope this helped. :)

DO NOT GET PUMAS. they are NOT running shoes and you will most likely hurt yourself. Nike are OK but most good running shoes are not cheap. i am a serious runner and the cheapest pair of shoes i ever got were $70 but they are usually around $110. I would check your local sport store like Dick's and ask them for advice but i would stick to a good brand of running shoes.the most popular brands are Nike, Brooks, Asics, and Saucony

Look for the casual walking shoe with a corrugated sole. These are fantastic. I wear them in place if the golf shoes which now have soft spikes which have to be replaced thrice yearly.

Because if you are walking on a golf course, you are walking 4-5 miles at a "whack". Your shoes need to fit correctly or you are going to get blisters. It's totally different from just walking about in your "day to day" life. As you get more used to the walking, especially up and down hills, your feet should become more accustomed to the "wear and tear". As to hurting hands, you may be gripping too tightly on your club or have a "grip" flaw where you are letting loose of the club a bit as you swing. Especially as a beginner, you are hitting or swing the club more times than the average. You can be wearing your skin a little where you grip the club. This too should change over time but a glove (on either hand or both) can help.

I dont have running shoes...?

but in gym, they make us run/walk a mile every day. 1st day of school, i didnt know this, so i wore flats. thats when my ankle started hurting. I had to do the mile again today (2nd day of school,this time i wore vans b/c its my only sneakers) and now my ankle is killing me. is it dangerous to run w/out the right shoes? whats up with my ankle(it hurts all the way around and when i take a step with that foot it hurts worse)? i dont have gym tomorrow but i have it the next day- im afraid itll still hurt- what can i do for the pain?
and i cant really get running shoes unless i ABSOLUTELY need them...

If you can't afford decent running shoes now, you will have no choice but to afford medical intervention in the future from damaging the soft tissues, bones, joints, or nerves in the feet, legs, knees, and hips. That medical intervention could be anything from physical therapy to surgery. You should make sure you wear good supportive shoes when you are not exercising as well (meaning: no flip flops).

There may be a bio-mechanical problem with your feet. Do you have flat feet, or really high arches? Look at the bottom of an old pair of shoes - is the wear only on the inside or outside of the shoe? Then it may be more than just proper shoe wear - you may need to see a physician to see if there is anything that can be done to prevent problems in the future.

Good basketball shoes with knee support?







I've recently had knee surgery but I'm still playing basketball so I've been looking for some good basketball shoes that still have good knee support. I've been looking around and so far all the stuff I've seen has good ankle support, but not really any good knee support... I had a pair of Asics running shoes and they worked pretty well, but I wore them down pretty quick and they aren't the best basketball shoes. So are their any good basketball shoes with good knee support as well?

Basketball shoes with knee support? Never heard of them. But a good pair of basketball shoes with AMAZING ankle support are the Nike Hyperdunks. Have a pair and LOVE them. The bad thing is that if you don't take good care of these, they will wear out really quick. They do tend to be on the pricy side too $120+ but if you truly love basketball, these are the shoes for you :)

Overpronation running shoe ?

Hi, I'm looking to get new running shoes for christmas. I have overpronation and have to wear the chunky inside kind of shoes. I currently have the saucony omni 9 and I hate the look. I know that its the feel that matters not the look, but I still want a change. If was to get overpronation inserts could I put them in a regular shoes and be ok? Thanks for the help

I have the lastest Saucony Omni shoes too and I think they are pretty good. Your other choice is the Saucony Stabil which offers the "max" in medial posting. You would need to have someone assess you in them before buying which I assumed you did when you got the Omni's?

As far as inserts, I have used the Powerstep Pinnacles to provide me additional support in my running shoes. I highly recommend them over any other over the counter inserts I've seen in running stores. I've tried superfeet inserts but they do not provide the cushioning that Powerstep provides. ( need them because I had bilat plantarfasciitis too)
Just make sure to get the Powerstep "Pinnacle" since this was made specifically for running shoes.
You can get them at a running store like fleetfeet or online for a little less.
I am not sure how effective the inserts alone would be on just a regular running shoe but you can have someone assess you run in them as well. Going to a running store is your best bet.

Also, you need to address your overpronation and build up the muscles in your arch. I assume you may have plantar fasciitis too or had them? Calf stretches, deep massage, pick up marbles or towel with toes are a few...

I'm not a fan of Nike shoes however that doesn't affect my answer.

Which of the pairs did you find most comfortable when you tried them on? Remembering of course that once you get a blister in them and it bursts you can't return them and so have to buy another different model that might fit better. Then there is the pronation issue - get the wrong ones and it is your feet, calf's, shins, knees or hips that will suffer as you run/.


So my only advice is to get to a specialist running shop and try on the various pairs you want and see which fits the best and suits your running style the best - here to find one that suits your running style the shop assistants will be invaluable with that.

Of course once you have done that it is up to your conscience whether you want to buy from the people who have taken time and effort to give you good individual advice based on how your feet and legs move, ir to go online to a faceless shop for what is only a few ££ savings, and of course in the process help turn your high street into a half mile long pound shop when the other shops have to close through lack of custom.. Ahhh modern life, I love it

If you read online minimalist shoes are not for everyone and take work to strengthen your feet, To suggest using them without saying that for the first month or 2 you have to alternate them with your regular trainers and not as a replacement for them and to run short distances in them in this time is not a good answer - buy them and assume you can do a regular long run the next day is asking for metatarsel stress fractures

i have realllllllly bad joints and tendons tend to pull easily. my feet have no arches whatsoever. my knees suck. i have to wear knee braces for every sport i have played.. i am verrry very athletic, been in every sport offered at my school, so i dont let my bad knees and ankles slow me down. again, i have no arches, and i have recently taken up track. i need to have a good pair of running shoes for running distances (like 10 miles a week.)

when its time to run the track races you need track shoes but when your practicing you should use the shoes called Nike Multi-court 9 Women's Volleyball Shoes i have the same problem with my feet and when i got these shoes i felt more support in my foot...:)

Jogging.

I would only run if I am on a track designed for running like at a college.

You need to land with your weight evenly on the ball of your foot you must be pounding too hard. Also do not jog/run through rocky/unstable ground it is bad for the pressure placed on your ankles and knees.

Also you need to put the money up and buy a good pair of running shoes.

Stretch before you run or jog. Not just your legs but also rotate your ankles and flex your feet up and down before your shoes go on.

If you need then buy ankles braces, they just slide on like a sock.

Also (not to offend you) but if you are heavy right now then you are placing too much weight on your ankles. Start walking to gain strength for a bit and then job.

Your ankles should not hurt so bad if you are still young, try a vitamin for your bones (calcium and vit D).

And you do not understand how to jog? Stay at the same pace, keep your body tight, back straight, and have your arms up like you are going to punch someone (do not swing them back and forth crazy like the power walker freaks

Im flat footed and need some new running shoes. Im wondering which shoes will be effective for my feet. Ive looked at the Asics Gel 1110 (http://www.zappos.com/images/718/7189790/827-185538-d.jpg). Idk whether these are gud for a person with flat feet like me. Are these good for me? If not, does anyone know any good shoes for overpronation that are fairly cheap?

Thinking about walking the 3 day 60 mile breast cancer walk. What would be the best type of shoes for me?

There are lots of shoes you can get, running sneakers are good for that. They won't get broken that easily. It's not such a big deal, just make sure they are comfortable, strong and cushioning. If you go to Adidas or Nike website you will even get filters that will help you find them.

How to wear out/down shoes in 3 days?

I am going hiking in 3 days and I've just recently bought my hiking shoes and I haven't wore them yet. I need to wear them out before I hike so I don't get blisters. I know It was stupid of me to not wear them -.- (I have a pair of Hi-Tecs)

You would need to start walking around in them now and the problem with that is you would just get the blisters before you went on the hike. I suggest you bring what you need to deal with blisters with you on the hike and tape the tender parts prior to starting (which you should be familiar with from walking around in them now).

shin Splints!?

I just started them I guess. It started in track on monday. It only hurt a little but not when i was sprintig. I know its the shoes but im getting new ones. Now i have to worry about the fact that i have a meet tomorrow. I have running flats. But the question is how can i heal my shin splints. I know to massage and stretch and ice and heat but what else. This is my first injury and I have been running for 3 years.
And how long should i take if i do that?

The best thing is to see your school nurse/trainer. They know the best answer. Shin splints do hurt, but if you want to be dedicated to the sport you need to run through them. Trust me, I hate shin splints, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, my time improved after working through shin splints. Try icing all around your shins before and after practice/meet also working backwards helps and in the future try to avoid uneven surfaces for running as they often cause shin splints. They will go away naturally in a few days.

I have been running for 6 months. I haven't had any shin pain, but a week ago I got new running shoes. Since that day I have had pain in my shin/calves. I used to run everyday. (about two miles running 6-8 minutes, then running one minute then 6-8 mins again until 30 minutes was up.) but I haven't gone for a run since I got my shoes. I just walked and now I'm not going on the treadmill at all.

I head that shin splints take weeks to heal. So I haven't been running. I'm not even sure I have them. but on my right leg, on the lower inside of my shin, there is this pain. It's like someone is stretching the muscel or something.

I don't want to make the pain worse. I have a field hockey season comming up on the 15th and I have track starting soon.

what can I do? should I take it easy and cut out the running/walking all the way? Should I go to the DR. and get a note to get out of P.E.? (we have to run in P.E.) or should I just walk easy?

also I had some questions about my warmup for running. I usually get on the treadmill without stretching for 3 minutes. then I stretch for about 5-8 minutes. after that, I get on the treadmill for thirty minutes, and then warmdown walk for 5 mins.

First of all you should stop running until the pain subsides or you may make it worse. Since this happened when you got new shoes, I would suggest going back to your old shoes until the pain goes away (help for that in the links below). Once the pain is gone, wear your new shoes to walk in only and your old shoes for running; this should give your legs a chance to adjust to them without causing pain. After a week or so of walking in them, try running again and see how it goes. If you feel the pain coming back, repeat the process. Eventually your legs should adjust to the new shoe; if not, you may have to replace them.

Do I have any risk of permanent joint pain because of running?

I'm 130 pounds/ 60 kgs. I run 3-4 times for like 20-30 minutes. Then I walk to cool down. I've heard that running can cause severe joint pain and other leg injuries. Is it true? Are they permanent? When is someone in a risk of a leg injury because of running?

If you wear good shoes, and do not run more often or longer distances you will not have any joint problems related to your running.
Unless someone has a problem that is aggravated by running, normally people with running related injuries are marathoners who run very long very often.

I run marathons and experienced lot of pain. Usually it's a tendon or a toe joint and of course, muscle fatigue in the shins. Wearing good shoes is very important. Running in bear feet is fine if you find a long enough soft grassy field otherwise, don't.

i myself am too a overpronator , i'm currently using SketchersGorun but am deciding to switch to nike lunarglide 4+ cause i feel that it has more support for my feet cause i'm a midfoot striker . I've done some research for you and it seems that Nimbus shoes is good for long distances and suitable for your feet too, but i still think its better to go and approach the sales person in order to find the most suitable shoe for you. I have Nike Lunarglides and Saucony Kinvaras. So far so good :) The Nike Lunarglides have a lot of support. The Saucony Kinvaras are minimalist shoes, so if you are up for minimalism be sure to try that. They have really good ratings too. Runners have all different kinds of feet, so I'm not sure if these shoes would be the best fit for you, but they're pretty good shoes overall. If you feel like you need more suggestions, go to your local running store so they can find the proper shoes for you.

Running shoe width - Too tight or too loose?

I am currently about to buy a pair of sneakers. I have used a chart and measured my foot.
It measures to (11.5 centimeters/4.52755906 inches) but I have been reading online that you need extra width for wearing socks and expansion of the foot. If this is correct does that mean I should get a size 14 4E(4.9") instead of a 2E(4.5") or am I better off getting a shoe a tad too small for me.

NEVER get a shoe that is to small. For running, get a shoe that is AT LEAST half a size bigger than your regular shoes.

Key for running shoes -

The better the shock absorption is the better the shoe is. Whenever possible, it is best to try them on before a purchase.

An ideal shoe will fit your foot like a slipper. Your running shoes are the key to staying injury free. Knowing how to use them will enhance your speed. You can wear any type of shoe you want for training in. But you should have a second pair of shoes just for racing in.

Oversize Trainers To Improve Your Speed -
The best type of trainer to wear is one that is either a half or full size too large for your feet. Buy a high quality cushion inset sole and place it in the shoe. This gives your feet added shock absorption protection. This could be a big help against Shine Splints. If one foot is longer than the other, buy the trainers based on the longest foot.
Except for hurdlers practicing their hurdle form, use this shoe for all of your running practices, including high speed sections. When you change shoes for races, you will find that your feet feel light and that your race time results are constantly on the speedy end of your speed range.

Shoes For Racing In:
A racing shoe (flats or spikes) that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. These shoes are normally very light but do not support your feet like trainers. The order of finding your points should be with spikes first and then with trainers, never the other way around. This is because trainers vary too much in size, shape and, length for the same size foot - change your trainers and you change the dimension of your foot. Where can I find cheap running shoes for cross country/track and field?

I found this great site called firsttothefinish.com but they don't have my size in the women's shoes (8.5) or men's shoes either. I'm looking for good shoes under $30. The site I mentioned had reebok and other brand name shoes as low as $10.

The most important factor for running shoes is "fit". That's hard to do online.

My advice is to go to a real running store; although you may have to spend five or ten more dollars, you'll get a shoe that doesn't injure you.

Are you a pronator, supinator, or do you have a neutral foot? If you don't know what I'm talking about, that's all the more reason you should get an expert to fit you with shoes. He or she will know whether you need a support shoe or not.

if you buy shoes randomly based on price only, you will get heavier shoes, with less support and have a higher risk for injuries, like blisters or sore feet. If you wind up injured, you will not run as much and will therefor pay more per mile for the shoes than if you bought a good pair for a little more money and got many more miles on them.

One of the most common problems for female trainers, particularly younger female trainers, is a loosely named constellation of symptoms known as patellofemoral pain syndrome or PF. PF should not to be confused with chondromalacia patella, which refers to a wearing of the cartilage under the kneecap. The "patella" part of PF is the kneecap, and "femoral" refers to the femur, or thighbone. Essentially, PF refers somewhat nonspecifically to pain experienced in the knee around the area where the patella contacts the end of the femur.

Symptoms of PF typically include pain at the front of the knee while performing certain activities such as descending stairs or hills, running, or after prolonged periods of sitting. Crackling or grinding in the knee may also be experienced, although this is more likely to indicate chondromalacia.

The kneecap, or patella, is a roughly oval piece of bone, held in place by connective tissue, that sits in a little groove on the femur, and slides up and down as the knee bends or straightens. One of the most likely culprits behind PF is improper patellar tracking, or movement in its groove, and this can be caused by a number of things. Bear in mind that not all explanations are equally accepted by all members of the medical establishment. Also, some things are a bit chicken-and-egg. Which came first, bad structure or bad movement patterns?

1. Women tend to have wider hips than men, and as a result, their femurs must swoop down to the kneecap at a greater angle. This is known as the Q-angle. This increased Q-angle can increase the likelihood that the patella will not be properly aligned.

2. Pronation (inward lean) or supination (outward lean) of the foot can also exacerbate PF syndrome. Pronated feet require the ankle and consequently the femur to compensate, and supinated feet provide decreased shock absorption when the foot hits the ground. Both of these conditions can be alleviated by purchasing good shoes, and using orthotic inserts. Check the bottoms of your shoes to see if you have this problem. Pronators will have the worn spot of the sole on the inside of the ball of the foot, while supinators will show wear along the outside of the sole.

3. Muscular weaknesses in the thigh muscle (quadriceps). Some suggest that a weakness in the vastus medalis (inner quad muscle above the knee) is the problem (see below for more of a discussion about this). Others add that weak hip muscles play a part.

4. Inflexibility in some areas, particularly the iliotibial band (a piece of connective tissue running from the hip to the knee along the thigh), hamstrings (back of thigh), calves or lower back. Again, folks are divided on this. PTs argue that the IT band can't be stretched. On the other hand, stretching of the aforementioned muscles can do little harm and is quite likely helpful. Hamstrings are involved in bending the knee, and inflexible hamstrings can cause pressure to increase between the patella and femur.

so, your knee is screwed. what to do?

immediate treatment

1. Rest. Quit doing whatever you're doing that causes pain, if possible. That means jogging, skiing, high-impact aerobics, allowing your two-year-old to whack your knee with her Pokemon doll, whatever. Chronic overloading is one of the most significant causes of PF pain.

2. Ice. Wrap some crushed ice in a ziploc bag, or a bag of frozen peas in a dishtowel and sit with it on your knee for 10-15 minutes (no longer). Do not allow ice to touch skin directly, if possible. Do this 1-3 times daily, especially after activity if you're able.

3. Pain relief. Now, I stay away from anti-inflammatories because they upset my tummy. That means ibuprofen, naproxen drugs like Anaprox, and so forth. You are welcome to try them over the short term, since they do help reduce some of the underlying cause of pain, which is the inflammation. Dietary supplementation with things like bromelain (pineapple enzyme) and fish oil are a better choice for long term anti-inflammatory, as they does not have many of the negative effects of OTC anti-inflams. If you just want some short-term pain relief, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is fine.

4. Accurate diagnosis. See a doctor and make sure what you have is really PF. One quick test you can do at home (but I warn you, this is painful) is to sit with leg out straight in front of you. Relax your leg. Then have someone put their hand on your thigh, just above your kneecap, and exert a gentle but firm pressure downwards, towards the floor (not down your leg towards your foot). Flex your thigh. If you feel a sharp pain, it likely means you're having kneecap tracking problems. When I read about this, I tried it on myself, and I can attest that it does hurt. I then tried it on my somewhat unwilling but PF-free husband, and he had no problems with it. However, this test has a few problems. First of all it hurts like hell, and second it is likely to return a lot of false positives (in other words, it can cause pain for people who don't have PF).

long term treatment

1. Quadriceps strengthening. It used to be that PTs would try to strengthen the vastus medialis, believing that its weakness relative to the other quad muscles allowed the patella to be pulled out of the groove. More recent studies agree that since the quads are designed to work in concert, you can't really isolate a single one. So, attention is now focused on having people do compound exercises that strengthen the entire thigh muscle group.

Despite all that stuff about squats supposedly being bad for your knees, full depth squats are actually great for knee rehab. They strengthen all the leg muscles with a compound, natural movement. If you can squat without pain, then by all means do so, even if you can't use any weight. If you can't squat the full range, squat in the range of motion that is pain-free for you, and gradually try to increase the range. Front squats are an ideal exercise, both because they put more emphasis on the quads, and because they seem to put pressure differently on the knee joint. When I was having real PF problems, I could do full depth front squats with no difficulty whatsoever.

Some folks recommend leg extensions, but I am very hesitant to recommend these. Putting frontal/lateral as opposed to downward force along the shin (tibia) can actually worsen knee problems with the shearing force that is created in the joint. If you choose to do leg extensions, do them with very light weight, and only the top 1/3 of the movement (like from nearly straight leg to straight leg) and don't lock your knee. Other exercises to do if you cannot do squats at all without pain, try these:

-Step up onto a step or block with one leg, then step back off (land gently, and don't lock knees). Over time, increase the height of the step. Focus on driving through the heel of the foot on the step rather than pushing off with the back leg.

-Step down from a step with one leg, then back up

-Sitting on the floor with legs outstretched in front of you, slowly raise one leg, keeping it straight, as high as you can go; hold it in the air for 10 seconds, then lower slowly. This can be done with ankle weights.

2. Hamstring, hip, and calf stretching. One good stretch given to me by my PT is this. Stand with right side facing a wall, feet together about 6 inches away from the wall. Take your right foot and cross it over your left leg, placing it on the floor. Stick your hip out to the left like Mae West workin' it, and turn your upper body to face the wall, placing hands on wall. Push outward on hip to the left. You should feel a stretch along your left hip and down the outside of your left thigh. Hold for 30 seconds, then repeat for other side.

To stretch hamstrings and calves: stand, cross one leg over the other, then bend at hips as far down as you can go. You should feel a pull along the back of the rear leg. Repeat for other leg.

3. Hamstring strengthening. Again, full squatting is useful here, so do it if you can. Also, you can do stiff legged deadlifts and hamstring curls.

4. Shoe orthotics. If you do indeed pronate or supinate, orthotics will help. Also, folks in athletic shoe stores are often very knowledgeable about which brands of shoe are better for which problems.

5. Checking exercise form. Many people allow their knees to cave in while squatting or leg pressing. Bad!! When ascending from a squat, focus on pushing knees outwards. You won't really push them out much, but it will feel like you are. When going up stairs, shift your weight back onto your heels as much as possible. Same goes for the stairmaster.

6. Supplementation. Supplementing with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may help. Other supplements such as bromelain, fish oil, and MSM will help reduce inflammation.

7. Soft tissue therapy such as Active Release Technique and self-massage of the soft tissue of the thigh with a rolling pin.

8. Surgery. This should be a final, final, final option, after all other non-invasive avenues of treatment have been tried.

how to stop my shoes from scuffing up our wood floors when i do cardio??? help please!?

hi. ok i finally found an exercise that i like to do, but my mom now says that i cant do that anymore because i am scuffing up her wood floors. this is my second day doing this (zumba) and the first day i did it without shoes on (just my bare feet with nothing on them) but when i got done i had blisters on my feet....so today i tried my tennis shoes. but now she says i cant do that again and i just cant go back to bare feet. that hurt sooooo much! please help me find someway i can still do zumba with my tennis shoes on. we had a clear mat on our floors, but when i would jump (or just any movement for that matter) the mat would slide and i nearly fell. sooo please help yall. any ideas (that are not smart alick) are totally welcomed and i would appreciate the help bigtime! thanks!

Zumba is meant to be done barefoot, and it always hurts. Tennis shoes make it easier but you cannot do it properly. You can't use exercise mats as they are too slippy and soft for zumba. I was a zumba dancer and we had a contract in a shopping mall, we still did it barefoot on the concrete floor and often led to bleeding feet. Keep doing it barefoot it will get easier so don't worry!

When I exercise my toes go numb. I have tried, Nike, reebok, nothing works. I don't want to keep spending money until I get suggestions from others with the same problems. I don't need running shoes, I mainly do Zumba, the elliptical, and stationary bike! Help!!!

Your problem is very common for people with a high arch.

Unfortunately, the running community is self-selecting; the activity is easier for people with a low arch, and shoe manufacturers are happy to go with a majority requirement that makes production easier. Running shoes are more profitable if you don't have to invest in a large number of 'lasts' for different shapes of feet.

What you need to look for are 'cross-training' shoes. These are not made for running, and became popular in the 1980s when a lot of people with 'dancer's feet' (high arch, easy to point, and easy to train for strength in pointe work) started to take up the early styles of aerobic fitness classes. Some sports, such as Tennis, are more easily played in a shoe of this shape; the springy high-arched foot is good at changing direction rapidly, and these shoes support that type of movement.

As other types of more extreme class took over the market, the shoes became less important, but they are still made, often as a specialised 'wide-fit' commodity. In reality, they are NOT wide-fitting, but because your high arch produces a shortened footprint, your normal foot width seems overly wide for the shoe size that fits your length of foot.

Sometimes, a regular-shaped pair of shoes will adapt to the shape of a high-arched foot if the right shape of 'arch cookie' is fitted to the insole.

Hi-tops are not good for running because they rub and constrict your ankles. hi-tops get part of their stability from the ankle laces. Running shoes are designed to be stable by simply wrapping around yoru foot while leaving your ankle free, so you'd want the ankle support to be different from the shoe so they're not dependent on each other.

I love to run, but I haven't been able to since late July because I injured my ankle and it still hasn't healed.=( To make a long story short, I have been dealing with anorexia for 1+ year, and when I regained some of the weight I lost, I resumed running this past summer. I must have increased my duration and intensity too quickly because within two weeks, I began experiencing pain in my inner, left ankle. I ran on it about 4 or 5 times since, as I thought it had healed and was just stupid. I saw an orthopedist and had x-rays 6 weeks ago, but he couldn't see anything. I have a follow-up this Tuesday for x-rays and an MRI, if I still have the pain, which I do. I even feel pain at times when I am just sitting or lying down, and sometimes, I twirl my foot lightly or bend it up and down to relax the pain, and I can hear the bone kind of popping or cracking. I don't know what is wrong, but I am really worried because I feel like it is never going to heal and I will never run again.=( I am still underweight, and I exercise a lot on the elliptical and in other low-impact ways, so could that be contributing to it not healing?

Well, I was just wondering if any runners out there could please recommend some running shoes to me? I haven't bought new ones in years, and I think it is time. I know I can't run now, but I think it would still help my ankle for support anyway. Thanks a lot for listening and hopefully for some advice! Take care.=)

Liz, first off let me congratulate you on working on your problems of anorexia. That is a difficult battle as I have worked with anorexia patients. One of the things you have to understand is that when you have lost weight in anorexia a significant portion of the loss is muscle. As I am sure that you know the body has to make up the necessary fuel from somewhere and it comes mostly from muscle. So in your case there is a good chance that the muscles and tendons are in a weakened state. You are now asking the muscles in the feet to stabilize a rather tall structure while in a weakened state. I would suggest that you get the MRI scan to make sure that nothing is going on. Then I would suggest that you see a podiatrist who can analyze your gait and perhaps fabricate orthotics for the feet. The orthotics would keep the feet in a neutral position thereby reducing the stress on the structures of the feet. Another aspect of this is to strengthen the muscles of the feet and legs. Do this under supervision to make sure that the movements being done are being done correctly so there will be no further stressing of an area that is not wanted. There are proprioception exercises that can also be done to help you relearn where you foot is in space. A simple one is to stand near a wall but not touching it. Elevate one foot off the ground and attempt to stand there for one minute. Upon completion of that foot switch to the other. When you get to the point of being able to do that for one minute close your eyes and then do it until you are able to reach one minute. There are many of these exercises that are available to you in increasing levels of difficulty. If there is nothing structurally wrong with the foot then start on these. Ask the podiatrist for some or if you are going to stay with the orthopedist ask them. But just stretching out muscles and tendons without knowing what the problem is can only lead to possibly further injury. As for the shoes, I would suggest that you get fitted properly for running shoes at a shop where runners go. I am sure that there is a runner's club somewhere in your area. Stop in or call them and ask what shop or shops do their runners use. A proper fitted shoe will allow the foot to move in it without being restricted and give you the support that you need. Also shoes have a limited time frame on their shock absorption so ask about how many miles you can expect to get out of a pair of shoes.

stress fractures?

I'm 17 years old and started competitively running 3 years ago without injuries. Recently I have become more prone to shin splints... which lead to my first stress fracture. I stopped running for a month and when I came back into it, the splints started back up and now I'm in the same situation. I was just wondering what I could do. I ice 20 min. before/after every run, take vitamins, and stretch well. I also have very cushioned shoes with less than 50 miles on them. Should I look into inserts to relieve even more of the pressure, or what else can I do?

Not running for 1 month may not have been long enough to heal your fractures.
You can do non impact conditioning like biking or running in deep water until your fractures are completely healed.
The reason you are now getting shin splints and did not for the first 3 years is difficult to determine since it sounds like you are doing the correct things.
Good shoes, massage, ice, and stretching should help the pain, and if not then you need to see a sports doctor.

I have been running in nikes forever, but recently i got very badly injured (a stress fracture that sidelined me for 5 months)... I recently went to a running shoe store and was fitted into a pair of Adidas, and I love them, and I feel safe running in them.

Go to a real running store, not dunhams or sportmart or dick's sporting goods... those are sporting goods stores not running stores. and yes there is a difference. running store employees are runners who actually know about the sport and which shoes produce the most successful, injury free runners

asics is very popular, i personally hate them, but basically everyone on my high school team wears them. i like adidas... and mizunos and brooks are also good brands to look into.


ugh sorry i just read more posts, and there is so much misinformation it is making me sick:

the nike frees are not meant for everyday running. their purpose is to strengthen your feet and are only meant to be worn a few times a week, and certainly not for long runs

and no running shoe, not even asics, can withstand 15,000 miles of running without sacrificing something. i am sure there are people who do this just for the thrill or bragging rights of running on the same pair of shoes for 15,000 miles

and do not go to the goodfeet store to get supports to use in your running shoes. those supports were not made for serious athletes. if you really need inserts, then go to a physical therapist. most physical therapy offices partner with a company that makes custom orthodics that are made for athletes. goodfeet supports are stiff and were not made for using during intense endurance activities

and the most expensive shoes are not always the best. for example: the nike air max 360's are in my opinion the worst running shoes ever, they are heavy and the cushioning isn't even that great, and there is no support at all whatsoever... sounds like a cheap shoe? they cost $170

I wear athletic shoes a lot, but after a few hrs; they hurt my feet. I have one leg that is a little longer than the other so I have to use a small lift in the other shoe, which pushes that foot more toward the toe area. I actually have quite a narrow heel and my arch is not high. I wear a size 9. I want something that looks good but is also cushioned and comfortable. Hope someone can help. thanks

Your best option would be going to a dedicated running store, like road runner sports, or fleet feet for example. There professionals will have you do a few short tests (for free) that will help out tremendously. They'll find out what type of shoe is right for you (there are 3 basic types of running shoes, support/cushioning, stability, and motion control), and they should have all the shoes separated by type, and they'll even recommend some, and you can try on a bunch and test them out. And I think you have up to a month to return them, no questions asked. It probably depends on the store, but at the road runner near me they offer custom fit insoles for $70 that are phenomenal. They last ~1000 miles worth of running, and do the same thing as insoles prescribed by doctors that cost 2-3x as much.
My favourite brand is brooks, but everyone is different. I knew people who swore by asics, saucony, nike, etc. The flats they sell at running stores are going to be a bit pricey though, I payed $130 for mine. But they're well worth it. After 2 hours of sprinting/hurdle practice 5 days a week, my feet felt fine. There are of course shoes that cost less, and you can possibly find them online cheaper.

Edit: Oh one more thing, they do sell shoes in different widths. So you should be able to get a pair that fit perfectly.

What is the top running shoes on the market?

I'm in good shape but I want to get into better shape with some distance running. Right now I'm running 3 miles on my off-workout days (I do Judo) but I'm encountering issues with my feet. Basically it feels like there is a bruise above where my foots starts to arch. I've been icing it today so I don't have to take a day off running. I've been using "cross country" shoes that I probably paid $20 for at Pay Less.

So, what are the top running shoes out there? What characteristics should I be looking for in a running shoe?

I'm a big guy, 6' 6" and somewhere between 220 and 240 lbs. I'm also a marthoner. You only need on thing to run, a good pair of shoes.

I use only one brand of running shoe, New Balance. I had knee problems back a long time ago and a friend of mine suggested New Balance and my knee problems went away.

The best thing to do is go to your local running specialty store and ask their advice. They can check to see if you pronate or supanate and suggest the right shoe for you. Be prepared to spend $80 to $100 for a good pair of shoes and replace them regularly.

It might be expensive but it's sure a lot cheaper than knee or foot surgery.

everyone has different feet shapes and sizes, that is why you cant rely on suggestions from people to buy stuff automatically. you are going to have to try on any shoe before you buy it or else you will have to pay the shipping (if it is online) to return it and it will cost you time. i suggest you just get some trainers or running shoes. go to many shoe or running shoe stores and try on shoes. take the ones you like the most. and rate them by these things in order

fit-not to tight not too loose

support- mostly the heel on the back (size) (bigger better)

comfortability- feels good to walk in them

look- self explanatory

color- match with most of your shirts/ clothes

if you try on a pair of shoes that you like you can try buying them on ebay or eastbay.com, or any other running shoe website and are likely to get them cheap. i think you should buy some new insoles too you can get them at running shoe stores. or just take out the inserts from your nikes.

honestly i think that big athletic name brand shoes (like Nike or Adidas)are completely wrong when it comes to any athletic clothes, but i'll stick to shoes for this answer. People really shouldnât just recommend brands and models. Everyone is different. There are hundreds of shoes and what works best for me may not work best for you. Of the hundreds of shoes, there will be a few that are really good for you

I haven't been to Dick's so it may be a good store. You really need a good running store with a knowledgable staff. You can use the Runnerâs World Shoe Store Finder to help you find a good nearby store.

If there isnât anything nearby you can use the Runner Worldâs Shoe finder to help you pick out a shoe.

Road Runner has their âShoe Dogâ which helps pick out shoes. If you order their shoes online, they have a very lenient return policy.

Iâm lucky and I have a Road Runner store only 15 minutes from my house. If you call ahead you can make an appointment to work with the shoe dog. (A lot of running stores have something similar â so you donât have to go to Road Runners. But this is where I have my experience.)
They take accurate measurements of your foot, determine your arch, and determine if you over-pronate or not. Then they determine which particular shoe would best meet your needs. They let you try them all on and run with them on their treadmills.

go to a running store and have them check out how you run. if you seriously need motion control, id go with something like the asics 2130. If they say you need it but its not that bad (like me) because of the short distances that you run in track, I would go with a lighter, neutral shoe, like the nike air pegasus (what i run in). I'm supposed to be using motion control but dont, and it doesnt hurt me at all. Just make sure not to get a really expensive full motion control shoe unless you run on like the actual sides of your feet.
id also recommend something with a fair amount of cushion, because if your going to be running a lot of miles on them, you dont wont them to wear down and then give you injuries

Feet are all different. And there's not one real "best shoe." The correct answer is to go to a shoe store (or even better, a running shoe specialty store) and try on a bunch of pairs.

Since the shoes are almost always made of synthetic materials, the "stretching" or breaking in is minimal. They should feel perfect immediately. Remember to give yourself some room in the toe box.

The reason I recommend a specialty running shoe store is that they will usually let you run a little bit in the shoes outside, while sporting goods stores will not. Also, the salespeople are generally knowledgable about foot types, stride types, etc, and will know which shoes to recommend.

But you have to make the choice. All of those are fine shoes. If they feel great, but there are small issues, you might consult this website to see how you can lace them differently. This is if the shoes feel perfect, but you have a little bit of heel slip or something.

Running???

I am trying to be able to run 2 miles at a time, but right now I can only run 10 min. How can I get up to 2 miles? I have asthma, but I want to be able to run for at least 30 min. How should I do it?
I do have medicine and take it, but I was wondering how I can get myself up to 30 min?

I took up running August year and can now run 22 minutes non-stop 3-4 times a week and have a 7.8min- 8min time for the mile. By June I will be up to 30minutes, and get my mile down to 6.5 mins-7 mins

This is how you do it.

First get good shoes. I run in Asics 2120 they can be expensive but as only runners wear them you can often get them at a reduced price. I got a pair that retail for £99 for a mere £40.

Check your feet. Are you flat footed? Do you have a high arch.
This is important. I have very flat feet and therefore "overpronate" which means my feet roll in too much. If your feet
are flat your may do the same and need orthotics. Inserts that you put in your shoes to give you stability. Go to you local running shop and get a "gait test" where you run on a treadmill and they analyze your running style. They will advise you to the shoes you need. This is very important I was wearing the wrong shoes last year and I injured myself. Often this is why people give up. Running is hard not painful.

In the book you will find this programme to get you up to 20minutes running non-stop. It is a 10 week program to get you up to 20 mins non-stop3-4 times a week. Do it it works.

Do each stage at least 3 times per week preferably 4.

Week 1. Run 1min Walk 2mins Do this 7 times 7 min
Week 2 Run 2 min Walk 2 mins Do this 5 times 10min
Week 3 Run 3 min Walk 2 mins Do this 4 times 12 min
Weeek4 Run 5 min Walk 2 mins Do this 3 times 15min

Yes I know you total running time is less but your running 8 minutes twice instead of 6 minutes 3 times which is harder.

Week 8 Run 12min walk 1 min run 8 Do this once 20 min
Week 9 Run 15 walk 1, Run 5 Do this once 20min
Week 10 Run 20 min non-stop 20min

Remember do each stage 3-4 time a week leaving no more than two days between runs.

This gives your feet added shock absorption protection. This could be a big help against Shine Splints. If one foot is longer than the other, buy the trainers based on the longest foot.
Except for hurdlers practicing their hurdle form, use this shoe for all of your running practices, including high speed sections. When you change shoes for races, you will find that your feet feel light and that your race time results are constantly on the speedy end of your speed range.

Shoes For Racing In:
A racing shoe (flats or spikes) that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. These shoes are normally very light but do not support your feet like trainers. You can make many brands of racing shoes feel very comfortable for use without soaks by placing a thin, soft cushion, flat insole in it. Replace the insoles when they begin to show signs of wear or when they are flat in your impact area. Insoles and arch supports can be bought in some grocery stores. If you use arch supports, place it in your racing shoe too. If one foot is longer than the other, buy this pair of shoes based on the shortest foot. However, if the toes on the longer foot are knuckling up in the shoe, then the shoes are too short - get a longer pair.

Hurdler shoe issue:
Shoes play a huge part of helping a hurdler be fast, especially in the short distance hurdles. This is not practical, but hurdlers need three pairs of track shoes. They need their proper foot fitting racing spikes, they need a pair of proper fitting running shoes for hurdle work practices only and, they need their oversize comfortable running shoes with extra cushion protection for all other running activities.

Wearing Spikes To Train In:
There are times when using spikes in a training section is very important to the athlete. Sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters, javelin throwers; long, triple and, high jumpers should wear their spikes when trying to calibrate their steps and starting block position. Once the measurements have been established with your spikes on, take them off and put on your trainers. Use your trainers to find the location of your established starting points. The order of finding your points should be with spikes first and then with trainers, never the other way around. This is because trainers vary too much in size, shape and, length for the same size foot - change your trainers and you change the dimension of your foot. For this group of people, knowing how to find your precise starting points with your racing shoes on, assures you a consistent range of high end results for your discipline.

There are lots of good volleyball shoes for sale nowadays under $70. Just find out where the Asics Gel or Mizuno brand volleyball shoes are sold. You'll usually find higher end ones and lower end ones, but they're all good because what you want, is a very light shoe with good shock absorption in the toes and sole. And both brands are excellent. Personally though, I've tried Mizuno and Asics and I'm starting to prefer the shock absorbing in the toes from the Asics moreso than the Mizuno. Mizuno soles are generally too thin for my liking.

But if you're dead set on wearing tennis shoes for volleyball, I would consider a cross-training style addidas shoe for both volleyball and tennis. I have one and it's pretty good.

I have a pair of adidas which happily saw me through training for and running the london marathon which cost about £65.

Get yourself down to the London Marathon shop in Covent Garden, the staff are good and helpful and will fit you a shoe to fit your running style.

Best athletic shoes for a heel stone or bruise?

I stand on my feet at work for several hours and I have a heel that hurts! It feels like a deep bruise or heel spur. What do you recommend as the best athletic shoe for heel comfort?

I am not sure if this would work for you, but I have these shoes by a company called Earth Shoes. They have this negative heel technology, http://www.earth.us/ I am sure they can explain it better than I can. I have plantar fasciitis, which is pretty much what you are describing. I used arch supports for years, which does help, in any shoe. But when I started wearing these shoes, the pain went away completely. They are costly, but so worth it. I wear them every day.

with the exception of actual athletic runners (ie nike, etc) most fashion sneakers can hurt your feet. Try buying inserts for these types of shoes, i like ones with memory foam, i have them for all my sneaker flats.

What shoe you select depends more on the shape of your feet and your specific stride. Many running stores do consultations with runners where they will analyze your foot-strike and make shoe recommendations for you.

Think in terms of whether you pronate, whether you have narrow feet, whether your feet are flat, etc.

running adidas shoes. they are comfortable, and last very very long. you can get them in classic colors or cute colors. they support your feet very well and will help you withstand hot asphalts [blacktops] as well as running track.

running nike shoes are also good, but i prefer adidas because of their longer durability
