I have a pair of Reebok Easy Tone walking shoes. The ones with the balance ball technology. I already walk regularly with my boyfriend and I thought it would be great to get a pair. Now I have a pair but I don't feel a burn or really a difference with these shoes. I thought I would.

Answer
Use a tape measure to get a baseline of your calves and the circumference of your thighs. Then, take some photographs as well. Then, speed up your walk, and see if after three months, there is a difference in the measurements and the look of the legs. If not, burn or not, return the shoes.

What brand shoes are best at over-pronating feet?

Christina

I basically like Nike but I am open to many other brands. I have over=pronating feet and i no i need stability/motion control. But i want to know based upon everyone's opinion what running shoe brand is the best in the world basically and what type of shoes famous runners use. Statements are highly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
All the major running shoe brands have shoes for different types of runners. Asic, Mizuno, New Balance, Saucony, and Brooks. And most of their sites will list the shoe along with what it is for (pronation, supination, etc.) If you go to a site like Zappos customers give reviews on shoes that can be helpful. This may help you narrow down the shoes to try before you get to the store. Just take the list with you and if you are at Footlocker or one of those type places. don't assume the salesperson knows what they are talking about!!!

This feeling is in the area from the ball of the foot to the toes, and across the entire foot side to side. Is there any way to cure this? Suggestions?

Answer
It could be Mortons Neuroma or Metatarsalgia. There are nerves running through your foot that can get inflammation from a variety of things. The main one being shoes with little or no arch support.
You could try a shoe with a better arch support and see if that helps. Or try a drugstore for finding some metatarsal pads to insert in your shoe. In the meantime, don't wear high heels if you are a women or shoes with a narrow toe.
Try icing the area 15 minutes a day, several times a day. If you can, take Advil or Motrin to help with the pain as well as decrease inflammation in the area. If all else fails, schedule an appointment with your doctor. If this has been going on for a long time or you don't feel relief in the next few days, make an appointment. Since nerves are involved, it would be best to seek medical advice if it continues past a few days or is so painful you can't walk.

When running all of a sudden my knees are almost giving out?

Q. I started running 2 miles almost every day like 4 weeks ago. Up until last week everything was okay but now I can barely run and I have to job because when I extend my leg and it touches the ground my knee has this sharp pain like it can't extend :( It's on the inside of my legs and I've gone to the trainer who has no idea what it could be... any insight would be great.

Oh and my shoes are Nike Free Training
JOG* not job hehe

Answer
Sounds like you have a case of Runner's Knee (or patellofemoral pain syndrome PFPS). This is a very common overuse injury that many beginners suffer from. It occurs when a mistracking kneecap (patella) irritates the femoral groove in which it rests on the thighbone (femur). Also, worn cartilage in the knee joint reduces shock absorption, high-arched feet provide less cushioning, and flat feet or knees that turn in or out excessively can pull the patella sideways. There are also muscular causes. Tight hamstring and calf muscles put pressure on the knee, and weak quadriceps muscles can cause the patella to track out of alignment. Just the repetitive force of a normal running stride alone can be enough to provoke an attack.

PFPS can affect one or both knees. It strikes mostly younger, recreational runners and twice as many women as men, according to the British Journal of Sports Medicine. (Women tend to have wider hips, resulting in a greater angling of the thighbone to the knee, which puts the kneecap under more stress.)

Symptoms include tenderness behind or around the patella, usually toward its center. You may feel pain toward the back of the knee, a sense of cracking or that the knee's giving out. Steps, hills, and uneven terrain can aggravate PFPS.

To prevent PFPS, run on softer surfaces, keep mileage increases less than 10 percent per week, and gradually increase hill work in your program. Visit a specialty running shop to make sure you're wearing the proper shoes for your foot type and gait. Also, strengthening your quadriceps will improve patellar tracking, and stretching your hamstrings and calves will prevent overpronation. (Try the exercises below from Pribut.)

At the first sign of pain, cut back your mileage. The sooner you lessen the knee's workload, the faster healing begins, says Pribut. Avoid knee-bending activities, canted surfaces, and downward stairs and slopes until the pain subsides. As you rebuild mileage, use a smaller stride on hills. Consider orthotics if new shoes don't fix the problem. "If your feet have good form, your knees will follow," says Pribut. See a doctor if the pain persists, to rule out another condition.

What are the best shoes for runners?

I run every day, and it is really doing a number on my knees and ankles. Right now I am wearing a pair of old nike shoes, but I don't think they were made for running. What women's shoes are the best for long distance runners? I want them to be durable, comfortable, offer stability, and be shock absorbing.

Answer
Alright you can try to figure this out on your own. I have come to the conclusion that I am a minimalist runner. This means that when I go to have my foot land on the ground, my heal barely or never touches the ground. You need someone, friend, family member or anyone and have them watch your feet when you run by or run on a treadmill. If you land on your heal, you will want to get some heavier training shoes with the brand of shoe's technology to soft striking in the back. And if your not, minimalist shoes are cheaper, and lighter. Next, check for pronation or subornation. This is where your foot rolls to the left or to the right as it strikes the ground. If the outside of your foot strikes the ground first, then rolls inward, you have subornation. If it lands on the insides of your feet, and rolls out, then you have pronation. Now, if you have subornation, shoe choice doesn't really matter. You could use arch support or you could ditch it. If you have pronation, arch support is pretty much a must, as if you don't, the arch in your foot will get sore and make you want to stop running. If your foot does neither, lucky you, you can pretty much pick any running shoe you want. Now if you have subornation, i would recommend a shoes that has flexibility, and cushion. If you have pronation, you want a shoe with arch support and not too much flexibility. and If your neither, just find a comfortable shoe that feels right on the arch as well. here is a list of shoes for you to try out or look into:
Subornation; Saucony progrid ride 4, Adidas supernova glide 3, Nike zoom vomero 6, Nike air pegasus +28, Asics gel nimbus 13, or Brooks ghost 4.
Pronation: Saucony progrid paramount 2, Saucony progrid Hurricane 13, Nike zoom Equalon +4, Nike Lunareclipse+, Adidas Supernova Sequence 3, Asics gel Kayano 17, asics gel 3030, or brooks trance 10.
Neutral: Pretty much any shoe that feels good.
The minimalist form( landing on your midfoot to forefoot, not on the heal): Saucony kinvara 2, Saucony mirage, Nike free series, Adidas climacool, Asics Gel speedstar 5, Asics gel ds sky speed 2, and if you want to become a minimalist runner, your best way to switch is to go with a pair of newtons. I would suggest the first pair of newtons for you to buy would be the sir isaac's. perfect newtons to make the transition with. And totally worth it, i went from a guy with moderate pronation to none at all and my form has inproved dramatically. and you don't have to stick with the newtons, I am running in Saucony kinvaras, and mirages. Best minimalist shoes in my opinion. Good luck)

what brand of running shoes are best for women? i want the safety thing on the shoes?

i want to run daily again and my old shoes are too dirty.
i need the shining safety thing since i will run after dusk daily since winter is coming.

thanks.

pls say which brand and which store sell them.

Answer
It's about specific models that match your individual feet, arch, pronation type, etc., There's no "brand" that's universally "best for women." You need to get fitted in a running specialty store. And virtually all running shoes these days have reflective components for safety -- at least the ones sold in running stores do.

In your opinion, what do you think is too big in
women shoes/sneakers to wear skinny jeans?

Answer
I don't think there is a shoe size too big to wear skinny jeans. I actually don't think foot size has anything to do with how well a woman can pull off a pair of skinny jeans. Rather, I think the proportioning of a shoe affects how a pair of jeans look.

For example, I wouldn't wear skinny jeans with running shoes, but I think they look adorable with Converse or Vans. When I first started wearing skinny jeans (I have shorter legs with a little curve) I felt a little awkward wearing flats with them, because I felt like they made my legs look weird and feet stand out too much. So I started out wearing them with heels balance the proportions. Now love wearing them with ballet flats!

My recommendation would be to start out wearing a pair of shoes you feel really great in so as not to feel awkward about larger feet. The most important thing is to feel comfortable. If you want to wear them, but are a little weary, maybe try wearing them dressier with heels in the at first. Worked for me :)

Why do so many women wear flip flops that are too small for them?

WiseMan

I see so many women wear flip flops that are too small for them. Their heel goes past the end of the flip flops. Why is that? Do they misjudge in size?

Answer
My flip flops are like that. I usually wear a size 9 in shoes with no problem, but my flip flops are size 9, and they are a bit too small. I guess maybe they run small? Or maybe it's like trying to squeeze into a pair of jeans that is too small so you can feel thinner.

I just started the class and it's a blast, but my shoes are really walking shoes and don't provide the right mix of friction and slide for this class. The teacher suggested either cheerleader shoes or shoes with cork. I've never been a cheerleader and don't really know how cheerleader shoes are different from other athletic shoes. I like the idea of cork because it's so lightweight but what kind of athletic shoes have cork in them? Would like to stay under about $60-$75 if possible, especially since they're specialty shoes.

Answer
i have nike frees and they are the best Zumba shoes ive had so far. I used nike lunar swifts for a while but they caused too much friction on the floor at my gym. the frees are perfect though. super light weight and flexible. any from this collection are perfect:

of course, buying them in your local sports store will probably prove to be cheaper or maybe ordering them from zappos or amazon, but shop around for these

Need to find a good pair of shoes?

I need to buy a good pair of walking shoes - not tennis shoes - I work in a hospital. I'm not a nurse but I do a lot of walking.

Here's the catch - I have wide feet. So if you can recommend a place that sells wide walking shoes it would be great!

On line or in the store is fine. I live in Chicago - if that helps for local shopping.

Answer
Zappos.com has a huge selection of shoes. Or try New Balance. They have walking shoes & also come in wide widths most of the time.

In my job, I'm pretty much "running around" and I want something that will ease tension and fatigue on my legs and feet. Overall, do running shoes provide adequate support? I've tried Dansko's, but I don't find them very comfortable. I like something that sits snug on my foot without having to drag it along.

Answer
A running shoe can be a very good option for being on your feet all day. A cross-trainer can be a good choice too. The Spenco insole is another way to pamper your feet a bit.
My personal recommendation is one of Nike's full-length Air sole shoes. They also make a cushion system called shox, but that is more for serious athletes. I have a pair and they can be stiff for me when I am teaching and coaching on my feet all day. They do a great job for jogging or playing basketball for me though.
Try shoes on and be very meticulous about the fit and feel. If needed, go to a place that knows how to fit shoes carefully.

What are some lightweight running shoes that also have great knee and ankle support?

I run on an average of 7-8 miles a day and the shoes I have now are New Balance and have extra support, but are starting to get really heavy and weigh me down when I run.. I've had bad knee ankle and hip injuries and so support is also a major factor when I buy my running shoes. Are there any shoes out there that you would suggest has both support and are lightweight?

I am a server at a casual fine dining spot. My feet and ankles are killing me... shooing pains up my legs to bottom of my toes. I need better shoes. They must be dress shoes and have a nice appearance... but I need the support of a running shoe. Help!

Answer
You need to go to the best shoe store in town, or the next largest place if you don't have a really good shoe store, and consult with someone who really knows shoes. Wouldn't hurt to go to a doctor, either. Maybe you can find out exactly what about your current shoes is causing such trouble. Can't tell from your avatar but I'm sure you're female, because men's shoes don't often cause this kind of thing. If you're wearing heels, that's probably most of the problem. You may have to go to much lower heels, or wider ones. There are dressy shoes that aren't going to kill your feet. They probably aren't going to be cheap but they're well worth it. I have some Ecco shoes, they might be worth looking at, but this isn't something you want to do online. Your feet and the prospective shoes have to be matched in person.

What is the best way to prevent Plantar Fasciitis?

Face on Fi

When ever I run more than 10 miles my feet kill me the next day. I strecth them, warm up, wear newer running shoes but nothing seems to work. Am I doomed with this forever?

Answer
Man I feel your pain. I cannot even walk or stand in the shop for more than a few minutes. Besides your streatches, my podiatrist recomended anti-inflamatory drugs like Ibuprophen or you can ask them for a prescription for Meloxicam which is a newer replacemment for drugs like Viaoxx that were pulled from the market. Also do ice packs for 20 minutes several times a day to keep swelling down. I also purchased Orthotics (Special shoe inserts) from my podiatrist. You can get ones like Dr Scholls from the drug stores but they are soft. The ones my podiatrist sold me were $35 and are like a very hard plastic that when I have my shoes on they press into and streatch the arch to keep that tendon flexible. My problem is that the bone spur resulting from having Plantar Fasciitis is probably too large as it gets inflamed way too fast. Looks like surgery is possible in the future for me.

Any suggestions for fitness shoes?

Mr Unknown

I want to buy fitness shoes but i'm not sure which. Anyone has any suggestions? I want them to not have a hard sole. They also need to look good. Im willing to spend around 55-65 dollars.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
It really comes down to what is comfortable to you. I would suggest from great personal experience your best way to go is with Asics, Nike, or New Balance, all of which are renown for their comfort and performance.
You can also find really good prices on sites like amazon, foot locker, ebay, and finishline.
-The good thing about the brands I listed is that they all have a large variety to choose from to fit what kind of style you're looking for, I'm the absolute pickiest person when it comes to my running shoes and how they look, trust me, if you want some good shoes check these out.
-If you can, try to go to a retail store and try the shoes on yourself to check them out.

Hope you find a good pair, cheers!

I want running shoes. I am male. I have an arch between flat-normal. I am also beginning to form a bunion (though I am young, and it's small and doesn't hurt, and it never has. A podiatrist told me I was beginning to form one.) So what kind of shoes should I buy?

Answer
You probably want a pair of running shoes that has a bit of extra toe room (for the bunion). Try out different brands to see what fits best for you. I would say though that brands like Asics and New Balance are a bit more narrow in the toe and tend to have high arch support so they may not be right for you. Try brands like Adidas, Nike or Saucony and also see if the store carries these shoes in wider sides. I recommend going to a running store and the clerks there will watch you run to see what kind of shoe works for your running style. Even if you don't buy that shoe then and there at least you'll have an idea what type of shoe, the brand and the size you should be looking for. Try not to get motion-controled or stability shoes, these have alot of extras but don't really help your feet. Believe it or not, statistical findings show there are fewer injuries in runners that spend less than $60.00 US on their running shoes than those that spend over $100.

A callus on my foot turned blueish black?

Samantha S

I've always had a yellowish callus on the inside of my foot, where a bunion would be. Its the part that usually rubs against my shoe the most. I just had gym class the other day and forgot socks and had to put my bare feet in my running shoes. When I was changing after gym class I noticed that it had turned a dark blue-black-purple. It hasn't changed at all two days later, it hurt at first but it doesn't hurt now. What do I do?

Answer
1) you can cool it a little if it hurts which i doubt by now
2) buy new shoes!
3) give it time to disappear

But I love to shop at forever 21! Can u please tell me what are good stores to shop at, types if shirts or jeans shoes etc what to get, and how many of each type of clothes? I'm not a big fan of wearing jewelry btw Thanks!

Answer
Your style sounds like mine :)

I would buy:
About 3 pairs of jeans-skinny/slim, flared/bellbottoms, and athletic pants like yoga or sweats
Varieties of shirts (maybe 4-5?)-tshirts, nicer ones like blouses, and tank tops, cardigans. Just layer it up!
Jackets (3)-comfy hoodie, winter jacket, and casual fall jacket. Another one I like is like this one: http://sidewalkready.com/2013/04/anti-bag-lady/. Blazers are good too.
Shows (1 or 2)- casual like athletic shoes or canvas shoes, maybe a simple pair of flats, and a cute pair of boots are good too

I know these are way more than the essentials but these are just suggestions ;)
Here's where I usually shop at:
Charlotte Russe
Forever 21
Wet Seal
Macy's
Aerie
H&M

Have fun shopping!

Answer
I use a pedometer. Any walking
is beneficial. If you are doing it
properly and wearing the right
type of shoes.
I started off at 3 miles a day.
Now it's 3 miles twice a day.
How far you walk and how fast,
depends on your current weight
and health. Any is better than none.
It's a heart thing........for me anyway.
My goal is 6 miles twice a day. I'm
saving up for a tread mill, for bad weather.

Answer
You are covered through ebay's policy. If the item doesn't arrive, you just open a dispute for "item not received" on ebay. The seller then has to prove they shipped the item. If they can't do so, you get a full refund. Of course, you should always check the seller's feedback ratings before bidding on any item and make sure they are reputable. Also buying items from other countries can be tricky, as they have to go through customs, which can hold up the delivery for up to a month.

Hey guys.
I'm 15, and I have flexible flat feet. I have always wanted to become a marine and do infantry. I can run better than the kids in the rest of my JROTC unit, and have no feet pain. Can I still join the marines?

Answer
As long as you do not have foot pain from it, can jump run and climb, and can wear regular footwear you are good to go.

Ken- This is no longer 1968. The DOD medical standards have changed quite a bit. If you look at them it states this about flat feet-
Current symptomatic pes planus (acquired (734) or congenital (754.6)) or history of pes planus corrected by prescription or custom orthotics is disqualifying.

So only if custom shoes or inserts are needed would it be disqualifying. Plenty of people with flat feet do not require any special accomidations. Also, if you look at a pair of standard issue Wellco tan boots, they do not have very much of an arch at all.

What type of insoles should i get?

freddy

I have flat feet and i was wanted to try a pair of cheap insoles before getting custom made ones. I was wondering if i should get 3/4 length or one with a full length. A gel one or what other type? I am 13 and i play basketball, sprinter in track, and football.
I need insoles because i get shin splints, and i dont know what it's called but I my knee hurts to just right below the knee cap. It hurts randomly at times usually when i sprint for 50 yards or more. Sometimes it doesn't hurt though. It's awkward. I don't think i have osterslotters though. I believe i have flexible flat feet which when i stand on my toes a arch appears but thats just from looking at it.

Answer
With cheap, you get what you pay for. Are you having some sort of problem with your flat feet? Are they painful, or you just don't like the way they look? If you tell us what your reasons are for wanting insoles, maybe we can help you better. Even if your flat feet aren't painful, it's true that you might be able to run faster and be more agile if your foot is properly supported. Without going into the whole biomechanics of it, a flat foot is less efficient in sports (and the rest of life, too), because it takes more energy to push off in the normal gait cycle.

If you're having real pain in your arch area for the first time (or the area where you're supposed to have an arch, if you have none), at your age it could be due to some changes in your foot structure, so you might want to check with your doc. It's probably just regular flexible flat feet, but there's a more rare type of flatfoot where the bones in the foot firm up at about your age and can become very painful. You'd probably know if you have this condition, because the pain keeps getting worse and worse as your foot structure matures. Does your foot have at least some arch when you're not standing on it, or is it totally, rigidly flat even when you don't place any weight on it?

Chances are you don't have this more extreme version, though. I had normal arches as a kid, but by the time I was a young teen, my right foot had flattened out totally, and later, my left arch "fell" too. You didn't mention if your feet are changing, or getting flatter, or if they were always like this, as far as you can remember.

You also don't tell us how flatfooted you are (you can check your wet footprint, for one thing; does your entire sole make full contact with the ground?)

If you just want some cheap insoles to cushion the beating your feet take from not having an arch, you might get by with a full length gel insole, because they do reduce the pounding your legs and back take due to not having an arch. But if you want more serious "arch" support, you'll probably want to spend a few bucks more and get some more serious 3/4 length inserts, like Superfeet (they have one model especially for those of us with flat feet) or Spenco (which you heat and mold to your foot, so you can get just the right amount of support you need/want). In fact, if you go to a podiatrist, which I ultimately did, one of the first things a good one will do is to suggest that you try something more conservative, like one of the two I suggested, before spending hundreds to invest in a pair of custom orthotics. I think Dr. Scholl's may have some ok products out there (not their cheap air pillow insoles, which do nothing for flat feet, really--I'm talking about something more substantial, like the Dynastep, although I have no personal experience with it). The inserts could be a help to you especially since you are on your feet so much in sports. Be sure to take your shoes along with you to be sure that your inserts will fit inside them--this will be especially true for you with your track shoes. For your sprinting, you might find that there's not a lot of extra room in your track shoes for most inserts--maybe you could train mostly in a pair that could accommodate your inserts, and then when you're at a meet, you could wear a lighter weight shoe with no insert....going without your inserts briefly probably won't do you any harm, although you might really like the extra support once you get used to them.

You're smart for doing something about this now. If your feet aren't totally flat yet (sometimes they flatten out as a teen or adult, like mine did), you might as well try to preserve what arch you have, because it's a good built-in shock absorber. Untreated, flat feet can lead to lots of problems later in your life, including bad knee problems like I developed or foot problems like bunions, which I've been successful in avoiding.

Good luck! Let us know how you're doing.

Here is what one person said:

"I have very bad feet. I purchased the Sole Unisex Softec Ultra Insole in a women's 6.5 size. They were recommended by a soldier who had worn them in Iraq, and recommended I buy them due to my platea faceitus and heel spurs. They are life saving to my feet. I will buy more and more. I HIGHLY recommend." by Jean M. Chalupsky

Does anyone know of a really good brand of running shoes?

Tom

I have arthritis and quite a bit of pain in my knees. It is starting to hurt a lot just doing simple things like going up or down stairs, and running. I have to walk or run to keep weight off. If I gain too much my blood pressure goes through the roof. I have a pair, but they don't seem to be doing the trick anymore.

On my feet a lot at work-- business casual dress code, and plantar fasciitis. What shoes should I wear?

Recently my place of work adopted a business casual dress code. I am on my feet 80% of the day and have plantar fasciitis and my feet tend to roll in prone, causing painful tendonitis and neuropathy. Previous to the change, I wore Brooks, Asics, or Birkenstocks. I think the Birks should be okay, but am stumped to find something that fits the dress code that has the comfort, support and breathability of the mesh running shoe. Any suggestions?

I second the Crocs - they have loads of shoes that don't look like the originals.
You might also look at Mephisto, Rieker, Ecco, and some Dansko

How do I get rid of Plantar Fasciitis?

Steve

I had Plantar Fasciitis as a runner in early 2000s. I lost 20 pounds in 2008 and it went away immediately. It's back now. I think it was because of wearing some sandals that didn't support my feet well. I've removed those shoes from my closet and now I need more help. Any tips? P.S. I have flat feet, if you didn't figure already. Could this also mean that I need new running shoes?

Answer
Plantar Fasciitis can occur due to overexertion during any sporting activities - it is rather common among runners. Believe it or not Plantar Fasciitis is one of the 5 most common foot injuries among professional athletes. Having a flatter foot (also called "pronation", your ankles may lean inward causing you to have a lower arch and thus a "flat foot) certainly does not help matters. In fact, worn out, old or poorly constructed shoes that don't fit properly, do not effectively support your heels or arch generally affect the distribution of your body weight and puts undue stress on the underside of your foot (your "Plantar Fascia"). I recommend that you see a doctor to get a proper course of treatment in order to fully heal your Plantar Fasciitis. There is however a treatment plan that you can administer in order to get rid of your Plantar Fasciitis.

Consider the URICE formula - Ultrasound, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Many doctors, physical therapists and massage therapists administer therapeutic ultrasound treatments in order to heal soft tissue injuries such as your Plantar Fasciitis. Ultrasound treatments can effectively speed the healing process by reducing your swelling and edema and healing your damaged plantar fascia tissue by softening any scar tissue that you may have. This is accomplished as ultrasound devices emit sound waves which penetrate deep beneath your skins' surface to heal your injured tissue. It's basically like a deep tissue massage that is given directly to the site of your injury where you need it most. You can get these treatments from a doctor or specialist - or even purchase a portable ultrasound unit. With a portable ultrasound unit you can treat your Plantar Fasciitis up to 3 times a day for 5 to 10 minutes. It is important to note that therapeutic ultrasound is a continuous therapy which means the more you get treatment the more your injury will heal. Follow ultrasound treatments with considerable rest by limiting your activity and decrease the weight that is placed on your foot. Ice your foot and heel area 2 times a day for 15 to 20 minutes in order to prevent any swelling. Compress your foot by adding light pressure to minimize swelling, you can use a compression wrap, cloth or even a towel to do this. Finally, elevate your foot above chest level to relieve the pressure that is placed on your injury.

Again I recommend that you see a doctor to get a proper treatment plan that will work best for you and your injury. If you would like any additional information about Plantar Fasciitis you may visit the website I've pasted below.

Good luck with your Plantar Fasciitis, and I sincerely hope that you experience some substantial pain relief soon :)

Why do I always get blisters when running?

best running shoes it band problems image

yomi

Although I do run on gravel the majority of the time, I have good running socks, excellent shoes and normal pronation. I run a lot and don't usually have problems with blisters, but this summer I've been getting them at the outside bottom of the morton's extension on both feet. I can't think of anything that may have changed my running form, and the blisters are painful and annoying.

Any suggestions for prevention or treatment? :)

Answer
you might not be used to running as much as you are currently running or you might not be used to your shoes. perhaps your running shoes aren't specifically made for running or they aren't good for your feet. you could try the nike frees 5.0 ... they are amazing! maybe you could put a band aid where you are getting your blisters so that area wont rub as much when you are running. good luck!

What do dancers do to their pointe shoes before they ever put them on?

pufferoo

I remember hearing years ago that they would hammer on the box of the shoe to make it more malleable, or that they would use something called Fabulon. I heard of one dancer who used to put the box end of the shoe in the crack between a wall and a door and slam the door right on the box, breaking it down.

Are shoes so different today that nobody has to "condition" or soften their pointe shoes any more?

Thanks!

Answer
Ah... braking in pointe shoes. I'll admit, I go through a pair per performace and for classes/rehearsals, I manage to kill two per week....You'd think, after centuries, they'd have found a way to build a better, more durabl pointe shoe, but they haven't.

I wear Russian Pointe Entrada shoes, which thankfully come pre-arched with a medium-hard flexible shank and a medium vamp. I love these shoes to death and they come out of the box more ready-to-wear then some of the other shoes I've given a try.

Still, no shoe can come out of the box, go onto your foot and into class. When I have time to break in a shoe (which I never do anymore), on my day off, I'll wear them to clean my apartment, the simple act of walking on them, and rolling through your foot will help them mold to your foot. I've also slept in my pointe shoes to do this. Beware though, in cleaning your room/apartment, cover your shoes with a thin pair of socks, your kitchen floor may turn into a slip'n'slide, but that's better than having dirty pointe shoes!

Most of the time though, I take out the pointe shoes, sew the ribbons (I don't use elastic) three-quarter the shank, pound on the box with a hammer while it's covered by a clean cloth to keep it clean, use a knife to detach the arch of the shank from the shoe so I "pop" into pointe, and then I place rubbing alcohol on the box to mold it to my foot. This takes me about ten minutes (and I've been known to do this on the Metro ride to the studio and get some very odd looks)

I've also always had a big problem with slipping, besides dousing the shoe with rosin :), for class/reheasal/teaching shoes, I cut off the satin on the toe of the pointe shoe and with a thin but firm needle, I sew the edges to the white sock lining of the shoe and sand paper the satin-less toe (I recommend using a thin dental floss for this), or when they're perforance shoes, I use a really hard sand paper to rough the satin up, I also take the sand paper to the shank under the ball of my foot, which I do to all the shoes I wear. This works nicely to stop the slipping.

However, I DON'T RECOMMEND THESE EXTREME TECHNIQUES FOR BEGINNING POINTE DANCERS!!!!!!!! And I do that out of love. Breaking in you first pair of shoes is a labor of love and there's no need to quickly break in a shoe if you intend to use it for the next six months. I don't. My shoes have the life span of a mosquito and the methods I use to break my shoes in are most of the reason why.

Step on them to get the rigidity out of the box and bend the arches but for God's sake, don't run them over with a car. For the love of dance, that's just a great way to ruin the shoes. In retail, my shoes run about $72. We get them straight from the Russian Pointe so there's a discount but still, if you don't know what you're doing to break in your shoes, you're throwing away money!! (and God knows that dancers don't make enough to begin with! :) )

P.S. A note on sewing shoes. As I said, I use a thin dental floss to sew because it's indestructible and will last you forever. Trust me on this one, dental floss is best, but make sure you get the thin stuff. Also, before sewing on your ribbons, burn the ends LIGHTLY with a lighter so they don't fray - I highly recommend using a lighter because matches and/or candles just don't work as well or as evenly. And when you are sewing on the elastic ( if you use it - I don't) make sure you don't sew through the actual elastic inside the band, if you do, random ends of elastic will stick out on the inside of your shoe - unattractive. Lastly, although you should have tightened the draw string before you began sewing, DO NOT SEW THROUGH THE DRAWSTRING! I'm working through a severe ankle injury, post-surgery, and the tendon on the inside of my ankle would swell. I still danced on said bad ankle (which I don't recommend) but I had to loosen the drawstrings on my left pointe shoe, so never sew through the drawstring, in case you need to readjust.
