I am trying to look for new running shoes. I am picking up running again slowly after having "runner's knee" and am looking for the best type of shoe that will give me lots of cushioning and also work with some slight overpronation. i heard that brooks and asics were good. i was wondering about adidas and of any other specific type of shoe out there that may be worth giving a try.

Answer
I'm assuming you mean medium or average arch (as opposed to low or high arch)?

The best one is the one that works for you, and you really can't find that until you go to a specialty running store and try things on with a professional assisting you.

You don't want to simply go by brand name or what has worked for someone else. When you actually try things on (and in some cases go up or down a 1/2 size from usual), you'll likely be pretty sure which shoe is actually "yours."

That having been said, the Asics 2000 series (2110, 2120, now updated to 2130) is one of the most popular "standards" out there, and is a stability shoe that would help with your slight overpronation. If you needed a little more cushioning, you'd probably do that via the insole.

Another that's very popular recently (especially for those coming off injuries and/or who want a lot of cushioning) is the Nike Vomero 2. You could probably then find an appropriate (stability) insole for it as needed for your arch and slight overpronation.

I would make sure to include those shoes in anything you try at a store, but a professional salesperson and trying things on is going to help you more than anyone online.

Answer
You know - I was having a problem with plantar fascitis -- so I went to the newbalance.com website -- and there I was able to email a professional who gave me sound advice based upon my activity level, weight etc. Give them a try -- I was extrememly happy with the sneakers that they reccommended. OR if you have a store called "The Athlete's Foot" - go in and have them do an evaluation on you - basically all you do is walk across a mat and a computer analyzes your walk/foot problems etc.

Are there good running shoes at a reasonable price? Also what type of socks do I use? Any help is appreciated!

Answer
I agree on Asics or Brooks. I used to wear adidas and Nike, but I've been wearing Asics for the last 3-4 years and I just bought by first pair of Brooks this year...what a difference. Much more comfortable! The best thing to do is go to a running shoe store and have them analyze your foot...they will fit you in a shoe designed for your foot type.

What's the difference between running shoes and weight lifting shoes?

.

I was looking online for some running shoes and came across weight lifting shoes and wanted to know what the difference was between the two. I run and weight and know that running shoes can better your performance by a ton when you run long distances but do weight lifting shoes do the same when lifting? If so how? Thanks to all who answered.

Answer
running shoes help absorb the shock put on your muscles and joints when you run, where weightlifting shoes help your body position into a more natural and efficient weight lifting form.

p.s. using the wrong shoes for running may injure you, but using the wrong shoes for weightlifting should not do any physical harm!

is the timberland euro hiking boots good for rough hiking over a lengthy trip?

i'm going on a hiking trip in a few weeks and was wondering if the boots are actually good "hiking" boots or just a fashion accessory?

if not, what are some good women's boots that won't cost me too much?

Answer
You could do a lot better. For all the hype, Timberland is not the sort of stuff that most experienced and serious walkers would consider buying.
As with some other brands the large fan club, especially of younger people who don't actually do any serious outdoor stuff but like to look rugged, gives a false impression of their real worth.
However, if the boots are for a one-off hiking holiday for a couple of weeks, they will at least last that long and may be OK for you.
Stoutly-built trainers or trainer-style boots, are very comfortable. I use a low-cut pair for mountain running where flexibility is important. Millets and Cotswold Outdoor have a number of styles at reasonable cost, similar to these from Brasher, but cheaper. . . http://www.brasher.co.uk/catalogue/products/levanto-xcr-levaxcrwo

For proper walking boots, the Brasher boots, a firm started by Chris Brasher, who is highly respected by the sporting community world-wide, are the best of the reasonably ( ! ) priced British boots on the market, but there are other good brands from Austrian, German, and Italian manufacturers which may suit you better if you are willing to spend the cash.
All firms have their design foibles and priorities, and no single boot can do everything. Stiffness for climbing and flexibility for walking cannot both be ideally catered for in one pair of boots, nor the cold insulation or aeration which may be required for maximum comfort.
Try several, and decide whether more cash would be wisely spent or not. Some boots are very desirable but totally unaffordable possessions for some.....the top range Meindl or Scarpa boots, legendary names for walkers and climbers for many years, cost more than £200, with mid-range at £150 and the cheaper ranges at £100.
Nice, but you would need to walk a long time or achieve a notable climb to justify the cost of the best available.

In Britain the Brasher Hillmaster is the classic boot, equal for quality with same-price Meindl's, and a big seller. It's introduction was a delight.
At last...a good British boot that could rival those of the Germans, Austrians, and Italians without costing a fortune. The walking and climbing magazines sent their staff out testing them, and wrote glowing reviews of the new and great British boot.
We had been a long time without one.

Wear the same socks as if for walking when you try the boots on. The 'profressional' arrangement is to wear light cotton socks with strong woollen socks over them which are turned over the boot to keep out small stones and grit, as the seated lady here wears them. .
http://www.ajcopp.plus.com/WalkersDSCF0880.JPG

Get the boots well worn in before you go away on your trip. I've worn new walking boots to work before to get the wearing time done, but of course most ladies could not use that particular ploy, and you will need to get out walking in them at weekends and in the evenings to get them more supple and shaped to your own feet.

Various waterproofers are available for trainer-style boots in spray cans or as a solution which you paint on with a brush. A half-inch paint brush does the job fine.

Dubbin is the usual protector and waterproofer to use for leather boots, not shoe polish. A real good soak with loads of dubbin smeared over them and left in a warm place for a few days to soften it so it soaks in, and a wipe off with a cloth which then becomes your 'putter-onner' will give them a good start in life and you will reap the benefit of it for years to come.
You can walk through a couple of inches of water and the boot will stay dry inside.
Keeping your feet dry is one of the big concerns with hiking.
A good start with the Dubbin is an enormous help and conserves the boots as well. They will last years longer if treated well at the start.

Where can I buy womens shoes in UK size 9?

theodorais

Hello, I'm 17 years old and have UK size 9 feet I've searched high and low for shoes in my size but have been unable to find anything for women. I'm fed up of living in converse and running shoes, I reaaally want something I can wear to college and all the shoes I find in big sizes for women tend to be patent leather high boots made for transvestites or american websites who don't ship to the UK.
Thankyou so much for your help I'm becoming a bit desperate :)

Answer
I have the exact same problem - I'm a size 9 too and usually living in converse. I recently bought a few pairs of ballet shoes/pumps from a shop called French Sole in Central London. They had some nice shoes, but were VERY expensive! One site I have used is tallgirls.co.uk which seems to be pretty good, you just need to order fast before your size goes. I think there are a few other sites similar to this one, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
I would advise checking out tallgirls, and I hope this has helped as I know how frustrating this problem is!
Good Luck!! :]

Where can I find cowboy boots for a man with wide calves?

quiescent_

My dad wears a size 12 shoe and I wanted to get him cowboy boots for Christmas but he has large calves since he is a big man. does anyone know who would sell these? I'd prefer somewhere that i can order online.
Thanks!

Answer
Most men's cowboy boots have a reasonably sized calf part. I'm sure if you just buy a boot that fits his shoe size, the calf thing won't be a problem unless he has preposterously large calves. Just be sure the boots you buy don't run small or large. I would suggest going to a store so you can ask a salesperson this question. Is it a big 12 or a little 12? Also, you would be better off seeing the actual boots before you buy, because, frankly, some are of poor quality relative to price, and some are very good for the cost. The best thing would be for him to try them on, but as you're getting them as a gift, this probably won't work. Don't worry about the calf part. And also, if your dad hasn't worn cowboy boots before, tell them they shouldn't feel like regular boots or shoes. They take a little getting used to, but after a while, they get very comfortable.

Good luck.

They are great for running shoes, cross trainers, hiking boots and work boots. They relieve pain & soreness from flat feet, bunions, back and knee pain, and plantar fasciitis.

What womens foot size is too big to wear skinny jeans?

blank2828

In your opinion, what do you think is too big in
women shoes/sneakers to wear skinny jeans?

Answer
I don't think there is a shoe size too big to wear skinny jeans. I actually don't think foot size has anything to do with how well a woman can pull off a pair of skinny jeans. Rather, I think the proportioning of a shoe affects how a pair of jeans look.

For example, I wouldn't wear skinny jeans with running shoes, but I think they look adorable with Converse or Vans. When I first started wearing skinny jeans (I have shorter legs with a little curve) I felt a little awkward wearing flats with them, because I felt like they made my legs look weird and feet stand out too much. So I started out wearing them with heels balance the proportions. Now love wearing them with ballet flats!

My recommendation would be to start out wearing a pair of shoes you feel really great in so as not to feel awkward about larger feet. The most important thing is to feel comfortable. If you want to wear them, but are a little weary, maybe try wearing them dressier with heels in the at first. Worked for me :)

Why is it important to use proper running shoes when running?

wiseone

This is probably a stupid question, I just started running and i'm using cheap $20 runners from walmart. They don't hurt my feet. I think they do the trick.. But should I actually buy some proper running shoes?

Answer
Cheaper shoes usually weigh more and will fatigue your legs faster(expensive shoes can weight less than half a pound and feel like nothing is there). Shoes should also be fitted to the arch of your foot, cheap shoe usually just have a generic arch that is bad for your feet. Next is arch support, with the cheap shoes you will feel it the next day. The grip on the bottom of the shoe should keep your foot stable. You also want the shoe to fit nicely to your foot, almost feel like it is part of your foot. If it is loose you can easily roll your ankle You should also make sure the shoe have comfortable heel support. Your calf muscle could be pulled from wearing improper shoes, and they will definately be sore the next day. The expensive shose will cut a lot of time off of your runs. I use to run Cross country and half marathons and the right shoes could cut as much as 30 secs off your mile times. The right shoes are important if you are a serious runner, but if you are only going for jogs every now and again walmarts should do fine.

Best type of bike to get for triathlons?

best zero drop running shoes

best zero drop running shoes image

Teri D

I want to get a bike to start training but I'm not sure what to look for...I want to do sprint tri's (shorter distances). What to look for and how to find a reasonably priced bike would be great.

Answer
Use what you have until you're sure the sport is going to stick. A decent, competitive tri-bike is going to run you at least a couple grand. That's a lot to put into a sport you haven't even tried yet.

When I started in the sport (1992), I used a 20 yr old touring bike I bought after college graduation. After a couple years, I was racing enough that I decided it was time to drop the big money on a tri-specific bike.

If you have no bike at all (my mind is reeling at the thought of how a grown person could exist with no bike......), find a bike that would serve you for general purpose use. If I were to start from zero (but knowing what I know), I would get a mid range mountain bike. Why?

1. I live close to the center of an extensive rails to trails system, so I do most of my training there, where I don't have to deal with cellphone yapping housewives careening around in 5000lb SUV's.

2. If the sport sticks, and you get an expensive tri-bike, you'll need a mountain bike anyway. Bikes are to triathletes what shoes are to women. One or two simply doesn't cut it. I can see 5 from my office in the basement, and there are more in the garage.

3. No, you won't be competitive on an MTB, but you won't win the first few times regardless of your ride. Better to watch the other athletes, get a feel for the sort of bike you want, maybe even borrow a bike here and there to try out. It'll take you a while to get the hang of what's important and what feels good.

4. Hook up with a local club. Its useful to have hands on advice and coaching on all aspects of the sport. Besides, since most of your clubmates have multiple bikes, its another opportunity to see, feel, and try before you buy. There are a lot of triathletes who did their first race or two on one of my bikes.
------
All that said, you may be an impatient youngster of my son's generation and want to stimulate the economy immediately. In that case, get thee to a high end bike shop that caters to triathletes and competitive cyclists. There are more of them than you think. They'll put you on a Serotta size cycle (if they don't, they're no good), then try you on a number of bikes on a trainer with a power tap, to figure out the size and configuration where you can generate the most horsepower. (That's one of the reasons I suggested waiting, because it takes some time training and racing in aero for your muscles to adapt to the position - but hey, its your budget). Again, bikes are like shoes. Fit and feel are everything. The bike that is best for my personal geometry and physical attributes might be horrible for you.

How to get rid of plantar fasciitis fast ?

Lilian P

I am a track runner and I felt a sharp pain on the arch of my right foot two days ago when I was practicing. I found out that it could have been plantar fasciitis and I really need to get rid of it because I have a track meet in a week and need to practice. The pain is unbearable, and I don't think I can handle it when running long distance. Please help, how can I heal it as fast as possible ?

Answer
Hello,

First of all I am sorry that you have this pain, it must be frustrating.

It is difficult to say exactly if this is indeed what you are suffering from.
In order to diagnose you better please answer these questions:

1) Do you have pain in your heel as well?
2) Do you have high or low arches?
3) What kind of shoes you usually wear? (when not running)
4) How long are you a track runner?
5) Does it hurt worse first thing in the morning?
6) Is there any visible bruising or redness?
7) Is it painful to the touch?

Here are a few things you can do right now:

1) Ice your arch at least 4 times a day, either by applying ice directly or by rolling a frozen bottle under your heel and arch when you sit down.

2) Avoid walking/running on your hurt heel/foot for a few days.

3) Wrap it up with an ace bandage.

4) Purchase custom made orthotics that you can wear in your running shoes.

Again, if you can answer my questions I would be happy to assist you further.
You can write to me directly if you prefer, my email is in my Yahoo profile or itaiw@yahoo.com

I wear my running shoes to college during the day and attend my friends wearing it at night. Is it bad for my running shoes?

Answer
It's a damage you can't see, but will feel. The recommended "Life" of a running/training shoe is around 300 miles, meaning that after you pound the shoe on the road, track, or trail/treadmill, you crush the cushioning which reduces the protection for your knees and joints. Also, when you walk you put a different heal wear on the shoe then you do with a running stride and that may wear the heal so that when you run the shoe strikes a little off the normal striking point changing your gait and your balance. When I find a really comfortable running shoe, I try to buy another just like it to wear for non-running. So wearing the shoe all the time will shorten it's running life faster.

Can cross country running shoes be worn on normal roads for long mileage?

Kima

I have a comfortable pair of Asics cross country spike sneakers. I'm curious how it would hold up to running on the road for long mileage . I've only run in normal running shoes on the road. Has anyone done long mileage with spikes on the road or ran a half-marathon or marathon in them? Is it like wearing normal running shoes? anything to be aware of? are feet any more or less susceptible to injury?

Answer
Do you mean racing flats/spikes? You really shouldn't wear them for anything but a race. For one, the actual metal spikes are going to be very uncomfortable if you are using them on asphalt. They are meant for dirt and grass. For another, they do NOT have enough support for your feet. Racing shoes are light and have little cushioning to make you faster. If you wear them regularly on long runs, you WILL get hurt. It's bad for your feet and joints! People in marathons or half-marathons usually wear regular running shoes because spikes really don't help a whole lot at that distance. Please, please wear your normal running shoes.

I suggest you don't wear colored jeans... how about simple jeans? Not washed, not light.
I would go for dark SKINNY / STRAIGHT jeans, no flare!!!!!

Also, I think athletic shoes look awesome/better with capris. Like dark, skinny, tight jeans & rolled them up a little.

Looking for 2012 everyday style?

Dione

Hi everyone! I've got a few questions about this years style for college/university students. I'm 20 years old, about 5'8" with long legs and kind of a rectangle (or "athletic") body type. I weigh about 130lbs and am very fit. I have medium ash brown hair with lighter highlights and blue eyes. I'm having a really hard time finding styles this year that look good on me!! I love AE clothes and Hollister but my dark hair just doesn't match the same things my blonde hair did!! Either that or I'm being picky, lol.

I'm wondering what kind of fashions are in style for women around my age (20-ish). I love skinny jeans, floral prints, scarves, anything pastel and flowy. I wear delicate jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, etc.). I wear lots of different shoes like flats, wedges, boots or beaded sandals. I think my style is kind of soft and feminine, no edge or a lot of bright colours. But I'm open to new styles!!

Now to get to the point...I'm looking for some outfit ideas for everyday (classes, dates, coffee with friends, etc.) that suit my style and this years latest trends!! If you could give me a few ideas, websites and/or pics would be great!!

Thanks so much,
Dione

Is sketchers shape ups for men a good walking shoe?

Im 50 yrs old had a total hip replacement and the doctor told me it was ok to start walking for exercise and was wondering about these sketcher shape ups i've been hereing so much about are they a good walking shoe for somebody like me?

Answer
Probably not a good choice. There can be a problem with balance with those things. The mfr. even got sued:
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/ConsumerNews/skechers-shape-ups-lawsuit-woman-sues-toning-shoes/story?id=12927314

Because you have a hip replacement, there's probably even more reason to be cautious. And there is skepticism that the design does anything for fitness.

Try what I did after my hip replacements: I went to a locally-owned athletic shoe store where I was fitted for a good walking shoe with the support that I needed. They knew about my hips and about the kind of activity I wanted to engage in.

Don't do what I did: I was so delighted that I could walk again after hip replacement that I embarked on a walking regimen without shopping for proper shoes first. The result was a case of plantar fasciitis that took me several months to get rid of.

how do you cure heel spurs without surgery?

Q. i dont want to have surgery because of a heel spur. is their any way of cures without surgery

Answer
Plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) is an excruciatingly painful foot condition caused by the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a broad ligament-like structure that runs along the sole (plantar) of the foot between the toes and the heel bone.

Most people who have plantar fasciitis know they have it and know what it is.

Some doctors compare the pain of heel spurs to the feeling of walking with a pebble in your shoe, just beneath the heel. Ha! Those doctors have never had plantar fasciitis. Those who have will tell you that the pain is far, far worse than that innocuous little analogy suggests. It is so bad, in fact, that it drives many people to submit to horrendously painful corticosteroid shots in their heels, in hope of reducing the pain.

I had a cortisone shot in my right heel the second time I had
plantar fasciitis. I am not a screamer, but let me tell you, that shot caused me to let out a shriek of pain that was heard in the parking lot of the podiatrist's office. It was so painful that I was unable to force myself to undergo the shot in my left heel that was scheduled for two weeks later. Furthermore, though many people do get relief from such shots, for me the shot did no good at all.

Another fairly drastic option for treating plantar fasciitis is surgery to loosen the plantar fascia by making a small cut in it. Certainly this treatment is effective for many people, but few would choose either surgery or those devilish cortisone shots if they had other less invasive treatment options.

Well, there are other treatments that should be tried before turning to surgery. The first time I had plantar fasciitis, I gave up my ten-mile-a-day walks, bought a car (which I had never done before), and abandoned stylish shoes (which are a major culprit in women's foot disorders). I also had a pair of custom-fitted insoles made--for $60--which I put into the Reebok walking shoes that I wore all the time until my heel pain subsided, which it did after about two months. I took aspirin every day to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

You should, of course, check with your doctor before using any over-the-counter NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. But if your doctor approves such medication for you, and if you use it carefully (NSAIDS can be dangerous if improperly used), then such drugs do help to relieve the pain and inflammation of plantar fasciitis.

A few years after my first bout of plantar fasciitis, the condition flared up again, and this time it was even worse than the first time. I had not gone back to wearing high heels, but I had occasionally worn attractive flats that did not provide sufficient support for my unusually high arches--and I had sometimes walked distances in them, since I no longer had a car.

I need more arch support than most, but everyone should make sure that the shoes they wear offer good arch support, because most cases of plantar fasciitis could be prevented if only people would take better care of their arches.

This time the pain was so crippling that I ended up having to use a cane for over a year. (My son complained that I was getting old. I told him to think of it instead as an athletic injury--I walked so much that I damaged my feet.) Because I had to stay off my feet as much as possible, I became virtually housebound, not a situation I relish.

It was the severity of this bout of plantar fasciitis that drove me to subject myself to that dreadful cortisone shot. Because that shot didn't help, the podiatrist was recommending surgery. But I kept putting it off, even as I began to implement a couple of other suggestions she had tossed out.

First, I switched to New Balance walking shoes. For some reason, the New Balance brand provides better arch support for
plantar fasciitis sufferers, and podiatrists routinely recommend that their plantar fasciitis patients wear New Balance. For dressier occasions, I wear "grandma" shoes--fairly wide, well-constructed black or tan shoes with really good arch supports. (The brand I like is S.A.S. )

Admittedly, these shoes aren't pretty. I now wear slacks or calf-length skirts, because my granny shoes don't work well with shorter skirts and dresses. One other thing I did--and I believe this is what made the most immediate and dramatic difference in my condition--was to wear those pre-formed Futuro elastic ankle braces that you can buy for five or six dollars in any supermarket or drugstore. They are way cheaper than the custom-fitted insoles I purchased for $60 dollars the first time I had heel spurs, and since I didn't end up having to buy a car, treatment was much less expensive the second time around.

I never wore skirts while wearing the ankle braces, but I only had to wear them for five weeks before the pain in my heels faded away altogether, though I continued to wear them for another two weeks, just to be sure all was well. Those braces pull up and support the arches from below the foot, providing even better support than my custom-fitted insoles had.

I never went back to wearing pretty shoes without arch supports, except for those infrequent occasions when I need to dress up, but I know I will not be walking or standing around.

It has now been three years since that last bout of plantar
fasciitis. A couple of times since then, after I have walked long distances on hard surfaces (e.g., sidewalks or roads), I have felt the familiar twinge of heel pain. But whenever that happens, I just wear my braces again for a couple of weeks, and the pain goes away. In fact, sometimes I will wear my braces even when I don't have heel pain, if I know that I am going to walk a lot more than usual, and that prevents me from getting even the beginnings of heel pain.

If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, try changing to appropriate shoes, use NSAIDS if the doctor approves them for you, and start wearing ankle braces. The braces should be snug enough to provide good support, but not tight enough to impede circulation. (Those of us who are no longer young need to be careful about protecting the circulation in our feet.)

You may well discover that your heel pain goes away within a few weeks, and that you don't have to have surgery after all.

Even more important, you won't have to have one of those nightmarish cortisone shots!

hope my ans suits u..if let me know

What would be the best adhesive to glue a sole back on an athletic shoe?

The last several pairs of athletic shoes I've purchased, the back sole separates from the shoe after wearing for a few weeks. I've tried rubber cement, fixture adhesive and silicone caulk. None of these work. Any suggestions?

Answer
The best glue is something called "Goop" Make sure you clean the rubber parts with a solvent. An alcohol will work, but so will something stronger like acetone (don't use too much or your shoe will dissolve). Clamp the parts together for 24 hours - a regular clamp is best but a couple of boards wrapped together with rope will work too.

What is the best athletic shoe for an overweight woman?

Q. Any overweight women know of a really comfortable athletic shoe that is good for walking for long periods of time? I'm having trouble finding a comfortable shoe that won't make my feet hurt while walking. And also one that isn't absolutely hideous.

Answer
Try buying shoes in a wider size. Plus size clothing stores like avenue, fashion bug, lane bryant, catherines, catos, ect. Have athletic shoes available in double wide as well. You can also check ebay. I found when I started exercising to lose weight most shoes were actually very comfortable, but after walking my feet leaned to the outside and it was uncomfortable. After buying a decent pair of tennis shoes in a wider size that fixed the problem. I didn't have to buy anything expensive, but you should if you want them to last longer and wear better.

How can I tell whether my Irish Dancing soft shoes are the wrong size?

I bought second hand shoes from a girl at my class and although they don't feel to small the sole really hurts the balls of my feet when I'm dancing. Does this mean that they're too small? I can't tell because my previous shoes were so battered that they didn't even have a sole(!) so I'm not sure if it is just because my feet aren't used to it.

Answer
Here, This might help

Irish Shoes

Irish "soft shoes" are called ghillies for girls/women and reel shoes for boys/men. Soft shoes are required for all Irish dance classes. [If you are a new beginner and do not yet own Irish soft shoes, you may dance the first two classes of a session barefoot. However, all students are asked to please have the appropriate footwear by the third class of a session.]

Ghillies should fit snuggly so that the dancer's foot may show a clear point without extra material sagging in the toe or the arch of the foot. These shoes will stretch. (Kids' feet grow, too, so yes it needs to be snug, but don't fit a child's foot too snuggly.) Click here for a printable handout of lacing and tying instructions for your new ghillies. The Hullachan website also offers an instructional video of this. [Some of the information in the Hullachan video conflicts with the Teelin handout, specifically about the option of wrapping the laces underneath of the arch. Food for thought.]

Irish "hard shoes" are required of all students Level 2 and above, and possibly part way through the year for Level 1 students at an instructor's discretion. Teelin recommends that student purchase hard shoes with either the Concord heels and tips or the "high tech" heels and tips. These are available from several different brands.

Most Irish dance shoes use UK sizing. Check with the vendor for size conversion.

Maureen Berry recommends Fays Irish Dancing Shoes. Her preferred ghillies are the "Soft Shoes - Platinum Suede Soles", and her preferred hard shoes are the "Ultra Flexi" or the "Super Flexi" shoes with suede soles and high tech tips and heels (squared tips, if ordering the Super Flexi). That said...

Different shoes fit different feet differently. Therefore, there are many different opinions of "the best" brand of Irish dance shoes. The shoe that a dancer feels is most comfortable will be that dancer's definition of "the best". Flexibility in a shoe is important because it allows a dancer to point as sharply as possible. This is true for both soft shoes and hard shoes. Shoes with suede soles tend to be more flexible than those with the tan leather sole.

Here are a few ways to check comfort, fit, and functionality when trying on a new pair of shoes. These tips work for both soft shoes and hard shoes:

1. Stand in dancer's fifth position. This will help check the fit across the width of the shoe.

2. Walk around on tip toes, as high on the ball of your feet as possible. This will help check the flexibility of the sole and the comfort across the back of the heel.

3. Do a few toe points. This is a good way to check fit in the toe and across the arch.

The following links are some popular Irish dance shoemakers and suppliers. Sizing and fit tend to vary quite a bit across the brand names. If a dancer has a particularly wide or narrow foot, talk to the instructors and other parents of more experienced dancers who may have experienced pros and cons of the various brands for those "tough to fit" feet.

Fays Irish Dancing Shoes

Rutherford Irish Dancing Shoes

Antonio Pacelli Irish Dance

Corr's Irish Shoes

Hullachan Irish Dancing Shoes & Highland Dancing Shoes

Attending a feis (Irish dance competition) is a great way to shop for shoes, as most feiseanna in our area feature at least one shoe vendor. For more information about feiseanna, or to check the schedule, please visit our Feis Information pages.

Maureen Berry highly recommends purchasing Irish dance shoes either at a feis or online. Fit and functionality are very important, and the companies that sell only Irish dance shoes know their craft. It's worth going to the specialists instead of general dance supply stores.

WHAT TYPE OF SHOE IS RECOMMENDED FOR AN 8 MONTH OLD TO WEAR?

Nell R

My granddaughter needs shoes, but we are confused about what is the best type of shoe for a child her age.

Answer
http://www.babycenter.ca/toddler/caringfor/feet/

A baby whoâs just started walking takes 176 steps a minute!

Experts say that the longer a child is allowed to walk without shoes, the better as this will allow their feet to develop naturally. Certainly when your toddler starts learning to walk indoors, let her walk barefoot as long as the floor is clean and safe, as this allows the feet to develop and strengthen without restriction.

Once your baby can take a few steps confidently and may be walking outdoors on rough surfaces, protect her feet with early first shoes made of flexible, lightweight and natural materials, such as soft leather, with flexible soles and non-skid bottoms.

http://happyfeetz.com/category/how_to_choose_shoes/

Shoes are not corrective and the foot does not need support for normal activities. The foot requires mobility to function normally. It has been demonstrated that populations that are predominantly bare foot have better feet than those that wear shoes.

Childrens feet grow and develop rapidly. So choosing an appropriate childâs shoe is a very important task. While at home bare feet are fine.

http://www.footankle.com/pdf/Your_Chilren_s_Shoes.pdf

There is controversy regarding the appropriate shoes for children to wear as their feet grow and develop. Barring such problems as severe flat feet, or excessively flexible feet, it is perfectly appropriate to allow your child to be barefoot much of the time. Certainly while in the home environment, bare feet are fine. The goal of children wearing shoes is primarily to provide a protective covering for the foot. Once protected, the foot can develop into a healthy, functioning structure.

Shoe Recommendations Based on Age:
Crib Age: A loose fitting soft bootie
12 years: (toddlers) a flexible booty or shoe with a flat stable sole
2 3 years: (running age) - a firmer yet still flexible bootie or shoe
34 years: a firmer shoe, bootie or possibly an athletic type of shoe.
4+ years: walking or athletic shoes are fine for this age group.

http://www.oxpod.nhs.uk/childrensfeet.asp

Footwear and Shoe Fitting

Children should not wear shoes at all until they can walk, so avoid pram shoes. For babies, avoid tightly wrapped blankets that prevent kicking and leg movement and avoid baby-grows (unless you cut the foot out).

Walking bare foot, where it is safe, is good for feet. Childrenâs feet are vulnerable to deformity from any ill-fitting footwear/hosiery until the bones are completely formed at about 18 years of age. Fitted socks made from natural materials are much better than stretch-fit socks.

What clothes should I wear to Grand Canyon on the driving trip and for walking around there?

Victoria

Im going to the Grand Canyon for the Winter and I want to wear something nice yet comfortable for the long trip and something good for walking and shopping around in.

Answer
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is at an elevation of 7,000 feet (half a mile higher than Denver), so unlike much of Arizona, they have a real winter with snow storms and sub-freezing temperatures (although winters have tended to be milder the last few years).

The weather on any given day can vary quite a bit depending on if a storm is going through. From December through February, a very nice day at the canyon might get up to the low 50s, but typically it will be in the 40s or lower and if a storm hits there may be heavy snow fall. It gets even colder after dark and temps will almost always drop well below freezing at night.

So you will want to be prepared and dress for WINTER. That means a warm heavy coat and warm hat at a minimum. Gloves, a scarf and warm boots (water-proof hiking boots are fine) are not a bad idea. They don't have a lot of snow on the ground yet, but once they do, you have to be ready for icy spots on the paths (ie: have footwear with good treads and consider getting YakTraks - see link below). For maximum comfort and flexibility, it is best to dress in layers starting with a light moisture-wicking layer, than a warm insulating layer (like a fleece) and then a water and wind proof outer shell (jacket or coat) so that you can add or remove layers depending on the current temperature or your activity.

If you plan to do any hiking (and you should), temperatures get warmer as you go deeper in the canyon (it can be like Phoenix at the bottom), but you should not attempt to go the bottom and back in a day. Always wear comfortable shoes, carry plenty of water and remember it is a lot tougher hiking up and out than hiking down.

Also be aware that there is not a lot of shopping to be done at the canyon. The Grand Canyon Association runs a bookstore at the visitor center and a few other locations (like Kolb Studio), jewelry and higher-end items can be found at El Tovar and Hopi House and a couple of the other lodges have more knick-knack souvenier items, but the whole Grand Canyon Village is not a large area and most of the activities and things to do involve being outside (although just hanging out in front of the big fireplace in the El Tovar lodge is nice too).

Have fun! The Grand Canyon is a great place to visit in winter. The crowds are low, the temps are nice for hiking and the canyon looks its prettiest under a fresh blanket of snow. But do be prepared for cold weather and possible ice and snow.

best running shoes to prevent stress fractures image

-up in the

this is my first track season in high school, and i'm actually pretty decent. i've been getting really bad pains in my shins, and one day it was so bad, i couldn't even practice. but now it's not so bad, and its just in my left shin now. Everyone on the team says its shin splint, and it the way i land on my feet when i run. i know how to prevent shin splints now, but how can i get over them? and can i run with shin splints? and how do i know if i have a stress fracture?

Answer
If you had a stress fracture you couldn't run. Period. Shin splints are one of the many downsides to running. I've had them so many times but I've always just ran through mine. Try and by shoes with little or no support example track spikes, vibram five fingers, or just go bare foot. This makes you land on your toes which makes you faster and has much less impact. It is the healtiest way to run. Also to help fix them stretch them and drink milk or eat anything with calcium. If it gets really bad then take a few days off. It's not worth hurting yourself. I'm just too stupid to stop. Hope this helps.

How long does it take for Shin Splints/Stress Fratures to heal?

iDance17

I have been running on my shin splints for about a month now, because i refused to sit out. Cross country season is over now, but track is about to start up. I don't know if my shin splints led to stress fractures or not. But if it has how long does it take for shin splints/stress fractures to beable to run on again?

Answer
Your getting shin splints because of your running form. When you run, don't land on your heels. Run normally without landing on your heels and you should land on the front outer side of your shoe, it should not be a huge slap when you come down because its suppose to be a "natural" landing. When you run, run tall, elbows should be perpendicular to the floor when you swing, pull your foot up (Not knees), look straight and don't look down. When you fix up the footwork, as in landing on the front outer side of your shoe, you should feel some soreness building up in your calves. You WANT that feeling because it tells you that your calves are taking up some of the impact from your knees. After workouts, walk 100 steps on your heels and make sure you feel some stretching in your shins, that'll help prevent shin splints also.

Fellow Esk

Hi, I am a 170 pound, 5'5 female who is starting a workout program. I did the wet test and I have normal to high arches in my foot. I suffered a serious ankle injury a year ago when I twisted it pretty badly while on an incline carrying a patient (Im an EMT). So I need something with ankle support, but is lightweight enough for a running shoe.

What do you guys suggest? Right now I am running in hiking boots, which I know cant be right.

Answer
it is not necessarily the brand of shoe you need to worry about (for sizing yes) but you should get a pair of shoes with good padding. this will mean that your shoes will be a little bulky (not like the boots!) but you will gain stability for your under-pronation (too much arch) and for your ankle. Any brand of shoe has multiple high-stability models, just go to your closest athletic shoe store and ask for stability running shoes.

I have flat feet and am still very athletic. I am very fast and want to be an Olympic sprinter. I am 15. How can I prevent my feet from getting worse?

Answer
Flat feet are a very common foot condition which causes over-pronation and can potentially result in much more serious ailments such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, or shin splints if not treated early.

Proper arch support through orthotic insoles or shoe inserts is an effective solution to foot pain caused by flat feet, and helps to prevent more serious foot ailments.

When you have acute Plantar fasciitis should you rest the foot?

Butterfly

I had this condition for 3 years before and am anxious not to prolong the agony this time.

Answer
Yes. Other things that help:

Fill plastic water bottle halfway with H2O and put in freezer. Once it's frozen, roll it on the floor using the foot with PF - it helps reduce inflammation. Roll from heel to toes.

Get an insert for your shoe. I use the green SuperFeet, which my sister (who works for a major athletic company) swears by. The aim is for your footfalls to be cushioned - to reduce the impact. Be more careful as you walk, too - try not to come down too hard on the heel.

Really important - there are exercises you can do that stretch the compromised tendons. Below: great overall look at PF from the Mayo Clinic, followed by exercises you can do. These are the same exercises my orthopedist gave me.
