Running Shoes?

Q. Hi, I'm 14 years old, male, 100 pounds. I need help with my running shoes.

I don't have flat feet, I have an arch, sorry if I don't know specifics, but I definitely don't have flat feet.

I run a mile on alternating days, like Monday, Tuesday off, Wednesday, Thursday off, etc.

When I run I run on a treadmill, usually not inclined, but I plan to, and I run at 4 miles an hour, but am hoping to get better than that.

My major problem running is that my knee joints don't feel too great after running, it's not unbearable pain, just not pleasant.

Based on this information, even if it's little, can anyone help me decide between the following pairs of shoes?:

What it comes down to is how much you pronate (ie. if and how much your ankle, knee, and hip line up when standing straight up barefoot. Just go to your local running store; the prices might be a bit higher than a big conglomerate like Sports Authority, but the employees will know exactly what you're looking for, so the extra pice is worth it. Knee pain while you're running can worsen over time, and cause tendonitis, and even muscle and ligament strains, so make sure you get the right pair of shoes.

What are good running shoes for a heavy male?

For a heavy male like you, I would suggest that you use shoes that are quite good in cushion. . Because you are heavy, the weight that is being transferred in your foot strike/s will definitely be heavier too and wearing shoes which has a very good cushioned can prevent this.

nikes are cooler. I'd get a nice pair of running nike shoes for walking. But running, I'd buy a shoe from the superior three, Brookes, asics, and Saucony

Asics shoes all are at the fixed price, to get a cheaper one maybe you would like to check with queensway shopping centre, singapore. But one thing you really have to check it out before purchasing any running shoes regards of brands is your foot types. Remember if you are running buy only running shoes not others like training shoes, they serve different needs. Check out your arch, if your arch is low you probably needs a stability (support) shoes because of over-pronation. If you are neutral or high arch, you probably need a cushioning shoes, you may under-pronates if you have a high arch. Consider your milege, your terrain and your body-weight. And also, if you require a stability shoes, those shoes has different amount of support for you so get the correct amount. Warning, don't anyhow pick a shoes for its design or colour, they serve different needs and if you choose a wrong pair end up you will injure yourself. Advisable, go to the concept stores, a good sales or experts will guide you along.

Running shoes or cross country spikes?

You will need to get running shoes at a running specialty store that will see what shoes are good for your foot. Otherwise you might get injured if you get the wrong shoes. It will be more than 70 dollars, but staying healthy is a lot more important than forking over a little more money.

If you mean XC spikes, lots of girls like Saucony Shay XC and Saucony Kilkenny XC 3. A few good guys shoes would be the Nike Forever XC 2 and adidas Cadence. They would be good, but it depends if the extra width is alright for you. All of those are under 70 bucks.

overpronator means your ankle rolls to the inside when you run. a motion control shoe can help prevent that.

but as to the rest, you should go to a running shoe store, and let them look at your feet and stride to find a shoe thats right for you. if you try to 'self diagnose' and buy on your own, you are likely to waste money and maybe hurt yourself.

I just have a few questions about running shoes.

1 Is it really worth blowing a hundred dollars for a pair of running shoes?(I a 14 year old with little cash to spend on such expensive shoes)For example, has anyone bought cheap shoes and ended up being injured because of the shoes?

2 How often should a runner replace his/her shoes?(I usually run about 4 miles five days a week)

3 What is the running shoe for the money?

I work at a specialty running store in California and im also a competitive runner. I have worked with running shoes for years and know that brands like asics, brooks, new balance, nike, misuno, adidas, sacony and a few others have great long distance running shoes. It all depends on what type of shoe you need (neutral, stability and motion control) and how you want it to feel. If you over pronate (your feet and/or ankle role inward) than you need a shoe with some stability (stability=grey material on the inner arch of the shoe or with mizuno is more radical wave like on the Inspire) to support your foot so it can run neutrally. A neutral shoe has white all around the base and is for people who supinate (roll out while toeing off) or for people who donât over pronate. Motion control is for people who over pronate like crazy or for rare conditions like surgery on the foot.

Each brand caries all three types of shoes; they just feel different for each brand.
Asics and Brooks are two brands that have a happy medium feel where most of the population will buy a shoe from them so itâs safe to by from them and if you donât like them; try New Balance.

Fit:
This is a list of what foot type usually works with each brand (this is not always right, but it is most of the time).
Adidas: high arch
Sacony: high arch
Nike: normal to high arch
Asics: normal to high arch
Brooks: normal to low arch
Mizunno: normal to low arch
New Balance: low arch

Price:
When you buy a running shoe the price should be about $85 and up for a new style. If you go to an all-a-round sports store, the shoe should cost $65 and up unless youâre buying an Asics 2110 for $45. Shoe life:
Depending on your weight and how you run, the shoe should last about 400-500 miles until you need a new pair. Running on worn-out shoes is one of the best ways to get injured. I have see shoes last about 900, but donât chance it.

I have a high arch and a couple shoes work for me.
I currently run in asics (DS trainers), nike (Vomero), New Balance (1061) with a DS trainer liner. I race in adidas (adizero). I still want a pair of the new brooks (Adrenalin) and I know they work for me and feel good.
I use different shoes for different workouts; thatâs why I have so many (I also work at a running store so get a BIG discount and some are free for testing^_^).

What are some good running shoes that will support my arches?

After I workout I get a horrible aching pain in the arches of my feet.

In order of the ones that have worked best for me...Brooks, New Balance, Asics, Adidas.
Each has its strong points, but you need to try them on to see. My wife loves the Asics gel shoes.
Check out the Brooks website ; they will help you determine what type of shoe you need. If you have a good specialty shoe store...a running store, they may have knowledgeable folks who can help you. Be ready to pay for a good pair, they are not the cheapest things to put on your feet...but your feet are worth it. When you have put 500 miles or so on them, they can still be used for other things, like walking ! Most runners I know get about three to five months out of a pair.

What's the difference between running shoes and walking shoes?

I have committed myself to training for a long distance marathon walk for a charitable cause, and I also walk for fitness/weight loss. As part of my training, I occasionally sprint while I am walking, but by no means consider myself a runner. I've been looking to buy some decent shoes, under $100, and am confused about the difference between running and walking shoes. If I buy a good running shoe, will there not be enough support for walking? If I buy a good walking shoe, will it be too bulky for my occasional sprints?

I'm middle aged and overweight, so I know that good shoes will make a huge difference on how my knees and hips feel after a walk/run.

So with that all said, does anyone have any suggestions on picking out a good pair of athletic shoes?

its better to buy running shoes for long distance walking.
Walking shoes are basically just casual shoes, not meant for any athletisisim (even if it is just walking).
Puma shoes are walking shoes, but some of their brands have support for more active walking.
Running shoes are built for support and comfort and made to "conform" to your actual shape of the foot.
when you pick out athletic shoes, the brand only depends on your foot.
For example, some people really like the company "Asics" but they do not suit my arch well. Nike, however, is the best shoe for me and they feel comfortable and so natural.
When walking, you want a shoe that is light weight. Youre gonnna be walking as much as you can, so you dont want extra bulk to weigh oyu down.
Some walking shoes, however, are fine to walk in. But, if you want to sprint, i suggest running shoes so you dont hurt your feet in any way.
(Scince you are not an experienced runner and you dont know the perfect technique for running, walking shoes might increase damages like your ankle twisting the wrong way.)

On the box, you should see the word "running shoe". Most good companies vary from 60-90 dollars.
They will last a long time.
Try not to buy shoes with any "windows" or clear openings in the heel.
They will add extra tension and increase the risk of injury.

i got my training shoes there for like 40 when they were on sale and they always have a couple different shoes on sale every time you go. they change it periodically.

It's important that you know your gait type before you buy any shoes.

There are 3 types out there. Flat or normal, cushion, and motion control. If you over pronate, you need motion control, and if you underpronate, you need cushion. If you have a normal gait, then you need a normal shoe.

Depending on the type of shoe, it will have various amount and types of arch support.

In general, if you have a high arch, you need cushion shoes, and if you have a low arch or flat feet, you need motion control.

If you are running, you should go to Yahoo! YellowPages and look up "Running shoes" and go to a local store that will watch you run in the shoe you buy. They will make sure you have minimal pronation to save you from repetitive stress injuries.

You need to be sure you're getting the right type of shoe for your activity too.

Then, if you need additional support for your arch and heel, you should get some inserts or even custom orthotics.

Running shoes in general will have more arch and heel support than other shoes because your heel strikes the ground so hard when you're running.

Can you put arch supports inside dance shoes?

ALL dance shoes? Even Pointe shoes an those shoes they use for Irish step dancing?? My Doc just told me that I have low arches and I'll be tearing my body up if I don't wear arch supports. Will having low arches and wearing arch supports hinder my dancing?? Will i be able to without tearing myself up?? Are there ways that dancers can "fix" low arches?? I hear them talk about arches from time to time, but I wasn't even thinking about my arches then so i didn't listen.

Help? Advice? I'm going to ask my doctor about it next time i see him (which is soon), but i was wondering what the dancers do in a situation like that. :)

You have the arch in your foot that you are born with, and dancing will only make that arch stronger, which should be a good thing. A low arch, is different from an inflexible arch. It could mean that your feet are "too flexible." You can wear your arch supports in tap, and character shoes, but not in soft shoes. You should see a physical therapist who deals with athletes, and learn how to "wrap" your arch properly, with athletic tape, to support your arches. If you try this yourself, you will probably just cut off the circulation in your feet. You MUST use FLEXIBLE athletic tape, which is usually flesh colored, as opposed to the white tape used to wrap ankles, etc.
As for pointe shoes just choose one with a very strong shank. You may be able to order a double shank shoe. You should ask your ballet teacher for advice on pointe shoes.

I actually just got the nike zoom forever-xc version as of 4 days ago, and i've yet to race in them.

I lost my [brothers] nike milers recently and needed new racers for track, and preferably ones that would work for cross country as well. (Being a second child, i get to have secondhand everything!)

The local running store i bought them from (westchester road runner) had a wall that said "Three season shoes" and they were among others on that wall that presumably had flats that would work fine for xc, winter track and spring track, and hopefully will last awhile.

So I tried a few shoes on, and tried them on, and they were the most comfortable for my high arch-ed? feet, and spring season is almost over so buying spring track spikes seemed useless so i got these.

The arch seemed the most comfortable to me, and unlike the previous nike milers, the zoom forever xc's are kinda comfortable for me.

That said, all feet are different, but in the weeks I ran in different friends shoes(as mine were/are lost), I learned that all flats are more or less a bit uncomfortable and didn't change my performance much.

and just my luck, they're half off now... So yeah $45 easily worth it from what i've worn them around the house and ran up and down the block a bit in. I'd buy.

[EDIT]

I wore them for county champs and ran a 4x800 in them, they held up just as well as any other racing flats and should be fine running xc in them.

Also they do get dirty pretty easily as that they are white on the top.

Anyways great light shoes with enough cushion for xc and a bit much for track.

Shin Splints and running?

I have been running for 6 months. I haven't had any shin pain, but a week ago I got new running shoes. Since that day I have had pain in my shin/calves. I used to run everyday. (about two miles running 6-8 minutes, then running one minute then 6-8 mins again until 30 minutes was up.) but I haven't gone for a run since I got my shoes. I just walked and now I'm not going on the treadmill at all.

I head that shin splints take weeks to heal. So I haven't been running. I'm not even sure I have them. but on my right leg, on the lower inside of my shin, there is this pain. It's like someone is stretching the muscel or something.

I don't want to make the pain worse. I have a field hockey season comming up on the 15th and I have track starting soon.

what can I do? should I take it easy and cut out the running/walking all the way? Should I go to the DR. and get a note to get out of P.E.? (we have to run in P.E.) or should I just walk easy?

also I had some questions about my warmup for running. I usually get on the treadmill without stretching for 3 minutes. then I stretch for about 5-8 minutes. after that, I get on the treadmill for thirty minutes, and then warmdown walk for 5 mins.

First of all you should stop running until the pain subsides or you may make it worse. Since this happened when you got new shoes, I would suggest going back to your old shoes until the pain goes away (help for that in the links below). Once the pain is gone, wear your new shoes to walk in only and your old shoes for running; this should give your legs a chance to adjust to them without causing pain. After a week or so of walking in them, try running again and see how it goes. If you feel the pain coming back, repeat the process. Eventually your legs should adjust to the new shoe; if not, you may have to replace them.

Is it ok to wear running shoes or sneakers without socks?

Q. Summer time weather is here and shorts are now worn more often. Without purchasing the so-called "no-show" socks. Will it be ok to forgo them. I have seen a number of women wearing the Nike Shox's without wearing socks. Some say it looks more sporty without the socks. What do you think?

It will look fine...But your feet will be sweaty and the shoes will start to smell horrible, and once you get that smell in your shoes you can't get it out

I have Plantar Fasciatis(sorry can't spell that) so my heel pain at times is very difficult. But i'd like to start walking and running and other aerobic exercise. Any recommendation on shoes, what kind, style to buy.

I run in acics Gel cummulus, but you need something with cushion in the heal. check with a local running store , some of them have treadmills where you can try running shoes before you purchase them. They also have a 30 day money back guarantee. If for some reason the shoes don't work you can sent them back. They prefer you don't use them outside but they will take them back regardless. IF your injury gets worse you may need to have it taken care of before you can run comfortable again. Ask your Dr.

Whenever you are buying running shoes, make sure you have minimum thumbnail space in the front of the shoe (from to big toe to the edge of the shoe). Also, make sure the shoe's arch fits your arch.

I am (at best) a novice jogger. I replaced the very old New Balance shoes I had for a pair of Asics (because everyone seems to swear by them). So I dropped $100 on a pair of Asics. Never before had shin splints been an issue for me. NEVER. I immediately felt discomfort in my shins when I would run - even walking quickly. I thought it was because I had not jogged - or even walked much - in so long. The last time I ran in those shoes I was literally writhing the pain of the shin splints.
I quit running, and for the longest time I was scared to start back up again.

I mostly ran outside on a dirt track or asphalt, and very little on a treadmill (with the Asics). The numbnuts who sold me the shoes even asked what kind of terrain I would be running on, and suggested the shoes. He didn't ask to see me jog or if I knew how I ran (I tend to run on the balls of my feet). I bought the shoes.

Fast-foward several months. For whatever reason, I ran barefoot on the treadmill. I was fine. I ran barefoot the entire week, and the only discomfort was blisters on the balls of my feet after an ambitious run. I put those freaking one-hundred-dollar shoes (!) on after I had the blisters, and imagine my anger when IMMEDIATELY felt the discomfort in my shins.

I don't mind paying $100 on shoes, if they are worth it. I know people suggest to trust the sales person, but I did that once and got screwed. I would like some suggestions so I can ask to try them out. I don't know if it matters, but I am most comfortable barefoot (I'm not flat-footed).

You most probably incurred the blisters because your feet are not conditioned to running barefoot. I run on my treadmill barefoot and have no problems at all. I go barefoot almost all the time away from work so I have developed calluses that allow me to use my treadmill barefoot. I think the blisters can be worked with, shin issues can be a lot worse.

running - weak ankles?

two weeks ago i did 100m and 800m at school and i was fine. a few days ago my ankles started hurting, i cant really describe the pain but today we did the 100 and 800 again and i just put up with it. when i was sprinting for the finish on the 800 i tried to run on the balls of my feet but i couldnt because my ankles were too 'stiff' . i am buying some new trainers tomorrow so
1. is there any exercises i can do to strenthen my ankles
2. what trainers should i get within a reasonable price.
( by the way ,at school i was wearing flat bottomed shoes which obv didnt help , but will they be damaging my ankles when walking normally ?)

I have softball practice every day, but when we practice outside on rough terrain, my ankles and heels always hurt. My friend suggested that it could be my cleats, but they've never bothered me before.

Are they a new pair of shoes? They may not fit you right. The shoes you wear impact how your feet hit the ground when you walk or run, and if they don't fit correctly, then your feet could be hitting unevenly or incorrectly. I know rolling on the outside of your feet will weaken the ligaments on the outside of your ankles and cause pain and damage over time (I've got that problem). I'd wrap your ankles with athletic tape or ace bandages and switch back to an old pair of shoes!

I always thought it was a lot more manly to take off shirt, shoes and socks on the sidelines and just play in boardies at the park. Makes me feel like a caveman running around the grass field. :-)
