I am running a 10k on Thanksgiving, November 24th, but am a little out of shape, please help me create a training schedule!

Answer
Not much time left, but something can still be done. By today you have 5 and half weeks to go. The basic idea is to gradually increase both quantity and quality of training, except for the last week before the race, when you need to rest a bit too.

The core of the training week could look like this:

MON hard session e.g. 6-8x1km or 5x1.5km or 4x2km at the pace you expect to run the race - with about 2min break between the intervals. It is very hard, so I would start with 5 or 6x1km (or even 10x500m) the first week (and also a bit slower pace) and add a bit every week
WED short hills (run up, walk down - develops leg power and may help you in the finish of the race) like 10-15x100-150m hill - not too steep but not too easy either. Run them fast, but not 100%. Pause between individual hills is just the walk back down and then run again.
FRI or SAT long run - very important to build some endurance. Time spent running continuously is more important than pace or distance on this day. Start depending on your current abilities (e.g. 40 min) and add 5-10 min every week (ideally get to 1 hour continuous running). Keep in mind that your 10k race will take at least 40-45 min (unless you're from Kenya).
These three sessions are the core. Ideally you will also run an easy run (like 30 min very relaxed pace) on the remaining days. You can substitute these with cycling or swimming or other aerobic activities you like (it's good to also do other things besides running to prevent injuries).

About 2 weeks before the race day you should be doing the hardest trainings. In the last 4-5 days before the race don't push it too hard and relax. You may run something like 2x1km (yes, so little) race pace for warm-up 2 or 3 days before the race.

Other notes:
- If your current shape is very bad, you can start with run+walk sessions, e.g. run 3min, walk 2min, run 3min, walk 2min and so on... the running here is very slow, not like the interval session of course.
- Make a trip to mountains or some nice area and walk for several hours - this builds up your general endurance and in case of hills and mountains also leg power.
- Be very careful not to overtrain. Don't do 2 or more hard days in a row if you're not experienced runner. 1 day hard and then at least 1 day easy. That's why I've written MON, WED, FRI - of course select the days as you need, but no 2 adjacent hard days.
- Make sure you have good shoes. You don't want to ruin your feet.
- Enough sleep, eating well and all these obvious things.
- Limit beer and other alcohol.

What are a good pair of running shoes?

Matt

I'm gonna try to run a 10K and the shoes I've got now don't seem to have much support. Running on a tread mill is ok but on pavement is tough. I'm 6'3" about 205lbs. 34 years old. Thanks

Answer
Try Vibram Shoes. Also look into your posture when your running... Are you a heel-toe runner?

I used to run heel-toe and got nowhere in my running. In the process i messed up my knee and i was told i would never run again because of arthritis and the way my knee was sliding across my bones. I changed my form to mid/front foot landing and my knee pain hasn't bothered me, also i have more energy and can run further. With no support shoes you are forcing your body into a more natural form and the running is more fluid.

http://vimeo.com/12551218

The video will help you ... its what got me into this form of running. & vibram shoes are a God-sent for me. I also run only on pavement ( i cant run inside lol )

Also i have ran in "supportive shoes", arch supportive shoes, shoes with special gel inserts, the shoes with the air and gel support at the heel, shoes for overpronation and underpronation, custom made and fitted shoes ext.... NOTHING HELPED; but my Vibram's :]

hillary need to keep her support for 2012. if hillary was to run on Obama's ticket as the veep, and scenario 1, Obama wins in november, she is screwed out of ever becoming president because (a) Obama failed policies will make Bush look like FDR, and will lose in 2012 in a landslide to the GOP or (b) she can't seek the nomination until 2016 (because you can't run against the incumbent of your party if they seek re-election) and then all the libearals who claimed McCain was too old would have to eat a little crow( which wouldn't be a problem for them, history has shown us that the dems don't care when the shoe is on the other foot [just look at Bill Clinton, and then look at all the speculation and outrage at McCains supposed affair with a lobbyist]) or scenario 2, Obama and Hillary will lose in November, and in the history of our great nation, only once has someone who was beaten in the general election actually succeeded in winning the next election. and I'm sorry but while i see Hillary possibly winning in 2012 if she does not run on Obama's ticket now, i don't see her doing so if she does and loses this year. and writing history as the first female president is possible, i don't think you could count on that and matching another feat only seen once in America at the same time.

How to break in some football cleats?

Cracker

I bought new cleats in the fall of 2012 but they hurt my feet so much i put them aside and used an old pair from a family friend. I trashed the pair completely and am now left with the pair that hurt my feet. They are the Nike Vapor Pro D.
I was wondering if it would be better to maybe just get new shoes. The shoes are very nice and i like them but every time i break them in i get blisters and my feet start to ache a lot. I play for a high school and we mostly play on grass so the D plate helps a lot with the detachable cleats. I am a WR and a DB so the speed shoe is perfect. So i was thinking of maybe getting Nike Carbon Zooms but these are molded and im not sure if they are very grass friendly. I was also thinking of the Nike Pro Alpha D but these look bulky and not very much of a "speed shoe"
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Thing is cleats aren't really made to keep you comfortable they're more of a keep you level deal, however I combat the same issue with double socks, I'll usually wear 2 nike elite socks stacked and just feel like I'm walking on sunshine the whole practice it works great man. They don't have to be elites in fact double elites are kinda over kill it would be better to do with double the nike crew highsocks or the nike football crew socks with new padding- those work great. I recently got a pair of Vapor Carbon 2's and they are AMAZING. So much bounce in the step it's crazy the nike propulsion system is the most comfortable thing in a cleat I've had as well as making a player literally run faster and jump higher. And in the long run the Carbon 2's are better for durability and you don't have to waste money with buying new socks because other cleats will shred those up. The Vapor Carbon 2 has the turf layout but I use them on both and it's pretty much the same the only way you wouldn't have grip like you normally do in a field cleat is if the field is saturated from extreme rain or mud. which field cleats don't handle great either. So in suggestions from best to moderate best solution:

a. Nike Vapor Carbon 2's
b. Nike football crew sock
c. Double Nike regular crew socks
d. Double Nike Elite socks ($$$$$$)

I'd recommend the Carbon 2's to anyone they can turn anyone into a better athlete on the field I probably won't even be buying the Vapor Laser Talons when they come out because I like these Carbon 2's so much I couldn't have asked for a nicer pair of cleats thus far they work great.

What are the best shoes for runners?

Beth

I run every day, and it is really doing a number on my knees and ankles. Right now I am wearing a pair of old nike shoes, but I don't think they were made for running. What women's shoes are the best for long distance runners? I want them to be durable, comfortable, offer stability, and be shock absorbing.

Answer
Alright you can try to figure this out on your own. I have come to the conclusion that I am a minimalist runner. This means that when I go to have my foot land on the ground, my heal barely or never touches the ground. You need someone, friend, family member or anyone and have them watch your feet when you run by or run on a treadmill. If you land on your heal, you will want to get some heavier training shoes with the brand of shoe's technology to soft striking in the back. And if your not, minimalist shoes are cheaper, and lighter. Next, check for pronation or subornation. This is where your foot rolls to the left or to the right as it strikes the ground. If the outside of your foot strikes the ground first, then rolls inward, you have subornation. If it lands on the insides of your feet, and rolls out, then you have pronation. Now, if you have subornation, shoe choice doesn't really matter. You could use arch support or you could ditch it. If you have pronation, arch support is pretty much a must, as if you don't, the arch in your foot will get sore and make you want to stop running. If your foot does neither, lucky you, you can pretty much pick any running shoe you want. Now if you have subornation, i would recommend a shoes that has flexibility, and cushion. If you have pronation, you want a shoe with arch support and not too much flexibility. and If your neither, just find a comfortable shoe that feels right on the arch as well. here is a list of shoes for you to try out or look into:
Subornation; Saucony progrid ride 4, Adidas supernova glide 3, Nike zoom vomero 6, Nike air pegasus +28, Asics gel nimbus 13, or Brooks ghost 4.
Pronation: Saucony progrid paramount 2, Saucony progrid Hurricane 13, Nike zoom Equalon +4, Nike Lunareclipse+, Adidas Supernova Sequence 3, Asics gel Kayano 17, asics gel 3030, or brooks trance 10.
Neutral: Pretty much any shoe that feels good.
The minimalist form( landing on your midfoot to forefoot, not on the heal): Saucony kinvara 2, Saucony mirage, Nike free series, Adidas climacool, Asics Gel speedstar 5, Asics gel ds sky speed 2, and if you want to become a minimalist runner, your best way to switch is to go with a pair of newtons. I would suggest the first pair of newtons for you to buy would be the sir isaac's. perfect newtons to make the transition with. And totally worth it, i went from a guy with moderate pronation to none at all and my form has inproved dramatically. and you don't have to stick with the newtons, I am running in Saucony kinvaras, and mirages. Best minimalist shoes in my opinion. Good luck)

What are some ways to make my knee not hurt while running?

Anna

I don't know what's wrong with it, it's been sort of an on and off thing for like 2 years. I know it comes back when I do too much after a break from running. But it has been really hurting me when I run. Sometimes it will just I guess go numb after a mile and then right when I stop running it hurts really bad. So I know I shouldn't be running at all, but I need to. So what are some things I can do to make it not hurt when I run? Is there any stretches or warm up or exercises I should be doing? I'm 21 and a female if that matters.
I don't think it's runners knee, it doesn't hurt when I squat. I guess it does hurt when I go uphill, but not a great deal more than running on a level surface.

Answer
As women, we have to deal with the way our bodies are built; wider hips means that many times the angle from the hips down to the knee is more than those of guys.

That being said, there are several options/reasons for knee pain:
1. the right/wrong shoe. If you have feet that overpronate, for example (feet flop inward when you land) yet your shoes are neutral or made for underpronators (land on the outside of the foot), your shoes could be altering your gait in a bad way and that can affect the rest of your legs.

2. you could be overdoing your runs. If you don't run much or don't have a schedule of running (like 3 times a week at a certain mileage) and then head out and try to do a 9 miler, you can simply be overstressing your entire body, not just your knees. Overtraining or stressing your thigh muscles, putting too many miles too quickly can strain your calves, and both sets of muscles are anchored at the knees.

3. you have weak muscles around the knees. You can do a search for running sites, a decent one is runnersworld, that will show you exercises you can do to both strengthen and stretch your legs. Simple weight training is also a good idea to strengthen your leg muscles.

4. Why do you NEED to run? If it's for weight loss (this was my reason to start, too), it's really not going to help much other than working out your muscles. ON AVERAGE (caps for emphasis), a mile of running/jogging only burns about 100+/- calories. If you are trying to lose weight and right now are heavy (note: I'm 5'3 and 160 so I'm no featherweight), perhaps you can simply slow your pace a bit. When I first starting running (okay, jogging), I overdid it; ran too fast, in the wrong shoes and I was in full-body pain for a while.

lastly, if you get your gait analyzed (most running specialty shops will do it for you for a small fee or free, don't go to the big box stores like Sports Authority or Academy; people there are nice, but I have yet to find anyone there that actually runs), slowly as in don't just do one long run a week, increase your mileage, and do simple warm-ups (these should not be extreme, only really stretch after a run), and you still have pain, perhaps you should visit a sports physical therapist to see if they can help you.

And for those that will go on and on how running will destroy your knees, any kind of stress can seriously hurt your joints, but read this:

What are some cheap running shoes I can purchase?

I think my current running shoes are causing my feet to ache. I've had them for a few years (actually almost four years now) - ever since I did track during high school. And they seem to be taking a toll on my feet whenever I sprint.

What are some cheap running shoes I should consider?

Thank you

Answer
Information about some running shoes and spikes for hardcore runners:
To improve on your endurance, you need to practice running distances about twice as far as your event.

Key for running shoes -

The better the shock absorption is the better the shoe is. Whenever possible, it is best to try them on before a purchase.

An ideal shoe will fit your foot like a slipper. Your running shoes are the key to staying injury free. Knowing how to use them will enhance your speed. You can wear any type of shoe you want for training in. But you should have a second pair of shoes just for racing in.

Oversize Trainers To Improve Your Speed -
The best type of trainer to wear is one that is either a half or full size too large for your feet. Buy a high quality cushion inset sole and place it in the shoe. This gives your feet added shock absorption protection. This could be a big help against Shine Splints. If one foot is longer than the other, buy the trainers based on the longest foot.
Except for hurdlers practicing their hurdle form, use this shoe for all of your running practices, including high speed sections. When you change shoes for races, you will find that your feet feel light and that your race time results are constantly on the speedy end of your speed range.

Shoes For Racing In:
A racing shoe (flats or spikes) that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. These shoes are normally very light but do not support your feet like trainers. You can make many brands of racing shoes feel very comfortable for use without soaks by placing a thin, soft cushion, flat insole in it. Replace the insoles when they begin to show signs of wear or when they are flat in your impact area. Insoles and arch supports can be bought in some grocery stores. If you use arch supports, place it in your racing shoe too. If one foot is longer than the other, buy this pair of shoes based on the shortest foot. However, if the toes on the longer foot are knuckling up in the shoe, then the shoes are too short - get a longer pair.

Hurdler shoe issue:
Shoes play a huge part of helping a hurdler be fast, especially in the short distance hurdles. This is not practical, but hurdlers need three pairs of track shoes. They need their proper foot fitting racing spikes, they need a pair of proper fitting running shoes for hurdle work practices only and, they need their oversize comfortable running shoes with extra cushion protection for all other running activities.

Wearing Spikes To Train In:
There are times when using spikes in a training section is very important to the athlete. Sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters, javelin throwers; long, triple and, high jumpers should wear their spikes when trying to calibrate their steps and starting block position. Once the measurements have been established with your spikes on, take them off and put on your trainers. Use your trainers to find the location of your established starting points. The order of finding your points should be with spikes first and then with trainers, never the other way around. This is because trainers vary too much in size, shape and, length for the same size foot - change your trainers and you change the dimension of your foot. For this group of people, knowing how to find your precise starting points with your racing shoes on, assures you a consistent range of high end results for your discipline.

Is there a website that rates running shoes?

Face on Fi

Im looking to buy some new running shoes and want to see what the "experts" say.

Answer
Unfortunately, you don't give us any other information about what type of runner you are; light, heavy, experienced, slow, fast, etc.

I went to the RW website and looked at their shoe reviews and conclude that it appears to be a bunch of commercialism in their show selections. Now maybe they're only rating NEW shoes, I don't know. But I've been in enough Saucony shoes to know that their 2 recommendations may not be for everyone regardless of how good the shoe is.

For ex, both Saucony shoes are recommended for faster experienced runners, not the average guy or girl who runs in the middle or end of the pack. Plus, these 2 shoes sell for 90 & 95, respectively.

My advice: Get to Academy or Sports Authority and get some Saucony Cohesion at about $40 per copy.

My husband was fitted for shoes at a running shoe store and they also recommended the insoles. He's had them for 2 weeks and is having some knee pain while running. Would he be better off without them or with soft insoles instead?

Answer
If he has not had knee pain before, the insoles are probably wrong for him; at least the combination of the shoe and the insole is wrong.
If the feet are tilted too much from side to side, some torque will be generated up the shin into the knee, causing them to twist and knees really hate that (they hate stairs, too). This might be the cause of a new pain in the knee. Increasing mileage too quickly can also cause the pain.

See: http://www.superfeet.com/Products/Orange.aspx
If you look at the demo of the Orange type, the side view shows quite a bit of camber; that could throw you off.

Try running with the insoles that came with the shoe. If that helps, the insole is to blame. Also give the knee an extra day to heal before experimenting.

Trial and error works pretty well. Unfortunately for me the error came at 23 miles into a marathon and I had to walk the rest of the way in; my foot was tilted 4°. I had orthotics made and the problem was solved.

I have very flat feet (very flat arches) and very long, narrow feet. I have always had a problem finding secure running shoes that support my arches into the correct position, and are snug around my entire foot.

I have knee problems because of this, so a good running shoe will help prevent furthur injury to my knees and feet.

Do you know of any running shoes that specilise in shoes for flat footed runners?

Answer
You need in insert to correct your flat feet, either something off the self or made by a foot doctor.
New Balance makes shoes with widths just like street shoes so you can find your size in that brand.

What is the best running shoe for someone with narrow feet and high arches?

I`m 19 and I alway have problems with my knees and hips due to running a lot. I think that it is due to underpronating and that my shoes are not supporting me right. I weigh 138 lbs but im tall at 5 ft 9 in without shoes. I have really narrow feet so it is hard to find a fit because most shoes have normal width. If you could suggest a type or brand of shoe that would work well I would really appreciate it.

I just received a review pair of the Merrell Barefoot Trail Glove today. I ran in them tonight, but Merrell has requested that I hold off on a review until February, which is actually a good call since it will give me some time to put some miles on them (Update 2/27/2011: My review of the Merrell Trail Glove is now posted). In the meantime, Iâd like to refer you to a glowing review of the Merrell Trail Glove posted over at the Barefoot Running University by Jason Robillard. Jason is working with Merrell to develop educational materials associated with the formal release of the Merrell Barefoot line (reported to be February 1), and if my first run was any indication, Jasonâs review is quite accurate.

Any tips on how you lost weight that might be useful to me?
Anything is great

Answer
Oh I know that feeling, I swear I go to a college where there are only 10 fat girls and I'm one of 'em. Makes me sick. Anyway, I've lost 25 lbs this past month and half. What do I do to lose that kind of weight? Simple, I eat a low low calorie diet, I don't really pay attention to carbs/fat etc,. I just keep my calories low and I go to the gym 6 days a week. I do a min of 30 mins of cardio, though now I'm doing 40 mins of cardio and I do 30 mins of strength training. Strength training is important, a lot of girls forego it because they don't want "manly" muscles, but women don't get manly muscles, unless they're taking steriods, etc,. Weight training adds the coveted tone and tone makes you look better.Ever see skinny girls who have no muscle tone? it's gross. You want to look tight and toned. Plus as you lose weight, you're going to lose muscle as well, stength training combats muscle loss and improves your health overall. Sooooo simply, cut your calories, 3500 cals cut out of your diet, will result in 1 lb lost. Make a 300-500 cal cut a day and exercise and you'll lose about 2 lbs a week, which is better then gaining 2 lbs. If you enjoy bread/pasta, etc,. by all means eat it, but just be aware of how many calories you are eating and trust me, they are more then you think. Also, don't eat out. Or eat out scarcely and it wouldn't hurt to avoid fast food all together. Drink lots of water, green tea, etc,. It'll really suck at first and honestly I think the first 3 weeks are the hardest, but after that it gets a lot easier. Take pictures of yourself in a bathing suit or something to remind yourself what you're trying to change. A picture shows us better then a mirror. I like to watch videos of thin women to motivate me or watch super active people like the people on Ninja Warrior on G4. Find inspiration. Also music helps, if you have a mp3 player or Ipod or whatever, it can make cardio so much more interesting. I HATE treadmills, because they are super boring, but music helps. Also try some cross country running, it's challenging and it's worth it. Have good shoes too. Goodluck

Can I lose so many weight in just 3 months?

Nena

Any tricks on how to lose weight in just 3 months. I have to reach the goal by that time. Any drastic ways? I am desperate. I know cutting on my foods and exercising is a must. I ask for extra tips. Thank you ^^

Answer
It takes time to gain weight and it takes longer to lose it, so why do people ask to lose 10- 20- 40 pounds like they're in a fast food joint. Example: May I take your order? 20 lbs less an larger breast coming right up! Would you like an apple pie with that order? :0 It's recommended not to lose more than 4 pounds per month because it's dangerous to your health. I've only seen obese people (300 lbs) successfully lose large amounts of fat in a month. A person that is only overweight can not expect to lose that fast. Why? You're body is smarter than you may think, it stores fat as a source of energy for times of starvation. That's why people live in extreme environments without food survive for several days. So in a sense I'm saying the body of a 170 lbs will resist to lose weight more than a person with a 300 lbs body. That said it's not impossible. The French eat very high calorie foods yet the stay slim. Why? They eat small portions not the SUPER SIZE ME portions we Americans have been conditioned to. Don't let anybody talk you into diet pills. They are bad for your health and your pocket. It's important to learn to count calories, not every calorie but, at least a rough estimate. You need a deficit of 500 calories per day or 3500 calories per week to lose 1 pound of fat. How do u achieve this? Well either burning the calories or not eating them. Go on the net and search for Recommended Daily Allowance which will tell you how many calories you should eat depending on factors like height, weight, age and level of activity. Think of yourself as a car if u eat too much "your tank overflows" and it will show this summer at the beach, yet if u eat too little u run out of energy. So if you burned 4000 calories at the gym this week you can feel guilt-free to eat a 500 calorie treat and still lose that pound. At the end of each day after subtracting the calories u have burned or didn't eat you should be left with at least you minimum calories recommended, for energy purposes. Search for a BMI Calculator which will tell u your ideal weight, and last but not least, to keep track of your calories go to a food calorie index or buy the small calorie counting books you see at the supermarkets with this info you will understand the dynamics of losing weight. NO. u can't chose to lose body fat in a certain part of your body, your body loses fat overall. Yes, I said it. U can do 5000 sit-ups a day and if your calorie intake is too high you'll never see a six-pack abs. Why not u ask? It only takes a small amount of fat to hide the six-pack. The fastest way to lose weight is running. Jogging 1 mile (equal to 4 laps in a track) burns approximately 100 Calories. Donât start running yet. Visit a runnerâs website, they have tips for beginners and marathoners, also an eating healthy, running shoes and how to not get injured. People sometimes lose motivation and quit exercising do to boredom. Think what is it that you like, hiking, basketball, tennis, if u like martial arts donât just watch the movie, become a martial artist. You have to like your workout, to stick with it. What ever it is JUST DO IT. To the woman out there don't be afraid of weight training. It would take 10-15 years of INTENSE training and steroid injections to get like a woman body builder. Why did I go through all this trouble to learn all this. I worked in the medical field in the Navy/Marine Corps and saw some soldiers slim and others overweight. It worked for me. Good luck! :)

best running shoes if you have bunions image

Christine

I have pretty bad feet and I'm only in high school. I think I walk on the outside of my foot, which is probably a bad thing...high arches, bunions, and I think bunionettes. Is there a specific kind of running shoe that I should get? My current running shoes (New Balance) make my ankles hurt when I run.

Answer
Asics are great running shoes! I run track and cross country and they were super good shoes. Those are what I bought last year I bought pumas for this year they were like $110 and shoe guy said they were awsomes shoes. The asics were $120. But I dont have any bunyans or stuff like that so maybe you need something else. So talk to a shoe salesman.

what are the best running shoes when you have a bunion?

not what w

i really need to find a way to cut back on the pain. it recently started huting more and more. like a throbbing pain. are there any ideas on the best type running shoes or does anyone have an idea on how to cut back on the pain?

Answer
This sneaker is said to be good: New Balance 833

"They have a generously round toe box, no elements to bother a bunion, and come in widths. They are very flexible and lightweight, yet with plenty of cushioning to see you through distances from 10K through the marathon."

For treatments here are some ideas: SILOPAD⢠GEL BUNION
-http://www.supportsusa.com/ankle/silipos/bunion.htm

Most bunions can be treated at home. In some cases surgery is considered.

Nonsurgical treatment
-Nonsurgical treatment usually is used to decrease pressure on the big toe and relieve pain. Treatment includes:

* Wearing roomy shoes that have wide and deep toe boxes (the area that surrounds the toes), low or flat heels, and good arch supports. Avoid tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes that put pressure on the big toe joint. For more information, see:

Finding the right footwear for your foot problem.
* Using bunion pads, arch supports, or custom-made supports (orthotics) placed just behind the big toe joint on the bottom of your foot. They can help redistribute your weight while walking and take pressure off your big toe. Ask your health professional to help you choose the right kind of pads.

* Using moleskin or felt patches over or around pressure areas to protect the bunion from being rubbed by your shoes.

* Taking nonprescription medication to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Examples include acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or aspirin. If you have other health conditions, such as diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, or gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), talk to your health professional about which pain reliever is best for you.

* Using ice to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Apply ice to the joint for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, once or twice an hour as needed. Elevate your foot so that your toe is higher than your heart.

If your bunions are severe, your health professional may prescribe medication to reduce pain and inflammation, such as a corticosteroid injection.

Surgical treatment
-If nonsurgical treatment has failed to relieve toe pain and you aren't able to do normal daily activities, or if you have a severe bone deformity, you may want to consider surgical treatment. Bunion surgery is done to help restore normal alignment to the toe joint and relieve pain. For information on making the decision about surgery, see:

Should I have surgery for bunions?
-There are different types of bunion surgeryâthe best type of surgery for you depends on how severe your bunion is and your surgeon's experience. Look for a surgeon who does many different types of bunion surgery on a regular basis. Each bunion is different, and surgery needs to be tailored to each case.

Prevent another bunion. Good luck!

I over pronate, I was wondering if there were any good running shoes for flat feet for 40-60$?

Answer
Kool Kat your friends are not very well rounded because flat feet are a very common condition. As a co-sufferer I use Brooks and Asics Duo max. Although the Asics look a lot better the Brooks actually wear better. It provides the proper support that makes running easy. Easy because I don't have to worry about arch and foot pain while running.

What are some good flat foot running shoes?

Scotty

I am looking for a pair of running shoes for a flat footed person. I am wondering if anyone has some shoes they just "love" and would recommend to anybody! I am looking to spend around 60 bucks but a little more is worth it if they are good.

Answer
Can't suggest a specific brand because every shoe feels different to people but for flat feet you would want to look at shoes that are designed for Motion Control. All major running shoe brands make Motion Control shoes.

You might find some shoes in your price range, but keep in mind that cheap shoes now can turn into long term knee problems..

Stress fractures are not healing?

best running shoes july 2011 image
Q. I am 14 years old and I weigh 90 pounds. I've never really been into sports, I only did ballet, gymnastics, and jazz as a child, but I quit when I was about 10.

In July 2011 I started running cross country. In September 2011 I got diagnosed with stress fractures(Tibial), so I rested for one month and a half (I didn't wear a cast because they weren't very severe). In June 15, 2011 BOTH my shins hurt a lot when I ran with my team. I went to the doctor and he told me to stop running again.

In August I started by walking the whole month. Then in September I ran 1 mile and then I added half a mile to my training every week. And by the time I was in 3 miles my shins started hurting again. I got X Rays and the doctor said I had to rest again.

I don't know what is wrong with me, the doctor always says the same thing. Will my shins ever heal?
Is there any method to make them heal?
My fracture:

Answer
I know a guy who tried to get into the Army but couldn't make it through basic training because of stress fractures. They wanted to give him one sort of discharge but he wouldn't take it because he wanted to try again. He found out the reason was that one leg was a quarter inch shorter than the other. All he needed was an insert in one shoe and he made it through easily the next time. It may be time to see an orthopedist and find out why you're having this problem.

Leg Pain! Please Help!!?

whenifeeld

PLEASE READ BEFORE RESPONDING!

Okay, I ran a half marathon this past February (2012) and didn't train for it like I should have which is obv. my fault. I'm not an avid runner by any standards, nor have I ever been one. This was the second half I've ever run. The first being in 2011. So I pushed myself way too hard and ended up with pain in my right leg, specifically in the middle on the outside where my tibia runs. I'll put a link to a picture that shows exactly where it is at the end of this. It hurt pretty bad for a week or so after the race, but I rested and didn't do any strenuous exercise and after about a week it went away. I'm sure the running shoes I had didn't help either because I don't think I was fitted for the right ones.

Ever since then I am still having problems with my leg. Last year I had about 4-5 instances where the pain was so bad I couldn't walk for about 2-3 days. The pain would be really bad in that spot on the outside of my leg the day after I'd run and then gradually go away after about 2-3 days. It's quite random when it happens. And it's not always when I run. For instance, Fourth of July my dad and I went on a 5 1/2 mile power walk around where I live and that night/2-3 days after the pain in my leg was awful. Recently, as in about 1 1/2 months ago, I ran/walked five miles on the treadmill and was fine. I rested for two days and then on the third day ran for 30 mins straight at 5mph (not fast) and had leg pain. Sometimes it's during my runs/walks, sometimes it the day after. I don't run fast or push myself too hard. I gave myself august/september to recover and then started back really slowly, but alas the pain came back.

I've had an MRI and X-ray which both came back inconclusive. So it's not a stress fracture or shin splints.

I went and saw an orthopedic doctor a week ago who said the the only thing he thought it could be was compartment syndrome, but I looked up the symptoms and I'm positive it's not that. It's only that one localized spot on the side of my leg. I really want to run another half marathon, but I need to get this straightened out first. I don't want to have to stop running because of this. For the first time in my life I finally felt accomplished. I have never been athletic was so proud of myself when I ran my first half.

I really don't know what it is or what to do?!?! So any help would be greatly appreciated!
BTW, I'm a 20yr old 5'2 130lb female if that helps.

Thanks in advance!!!

See that's exactly what my ortho told me too! He was just like Ice it, rest, take anti-inflammatories, and wear good shoes. None of that has been helping! I hope you are able to figure out what's wrong with your leg! And he wants me to come back in two weeks, but I haven't had any pain since I haven't been running and like I said it's not every time I run so what good is going back going to do?

sorry for the repeats lol I thought it didn't post. And thanks everyone so far for your answers! Yeah I stay pretty inactive to be honest. I go to the gym 3x a week but other then that don't do too much. I do stretch extensively every time I work out. I will try to stretch more and drink more water as well as move more since I know I don't.

Answer
i had an injury to my left leg, but inside pain, same place.
i had set of xrays, then mri of the leg, then mri of my back, then a bone scan
same as you
went to an ortho , he basically looked at me like i was a hypochondriac.
everyone just kept telling me, to rest , ice, and take anti inflammatory drugs, which I did.
i went to another doctor and he suggested pain clinic
i got 2 cortisone shots, helped a lot
and then he put me on some nerve medication.
I did not run, but i biked a lot, and just over strained my leg, I had no pain while biking
just the next day.I'm still not the same as I was, and its been
a YEAR.

My little boy is about to start walking and I have never made him wear shoes, because he refused to keep them on his feet!! My mother says I should take him to a Stride Rite store to get his feet measured and get him a good pair of walking shoes. Whats the difference in shoes and Walking shoes? And do people still get walking shoes for their infants?

Answer
Little ones do not need shoes when they begin to walk. If you need shoes for outdoors, simple is better, a $10 pair from walmart will do just fine! Baby's grow so fast as you know, they do not know the difference between Nike's and cheaper shoes... I say go with a simple, easy to put on pair to protect his feet from being hurt outdoors and leave them off inside!

What type of shoes should I get for my 11 month old?

Pip

She has just started to walk but the walking shoes seem too solid for her feet. Will the ones for cruising be good enough?

Answer
We had this problem with our son as he started walking quite early (10 months) We tried him with the walking ones and he was a little unsteady at first but then he soon got used to them. If you take her to a proper child's shoes hope they will be able to give you the correct advice and if they don't work out, take them back and swap them. After all, your baby won't have walked outside in them.

Answer
1: turn off the friggen computer

2: stand the hell up

3: possibly walk, crawl or roll towards the bathroom. In there you will find a place to shower, bath or maybe a sink that you can wet yourself from.
Once you've applied water and scrubbed, find a towel or something dry and clean to wipe or soak the water from your skin.

4: hop, skip, jump, walk or run to the place of the house where you keep nice clean clothes.

5: put them on. And not on the floor or the place where you sleep. Try wearing them :)

6: once you have put the appropriate articles of clothing on you should then make your way Infront of a mirror or something that you can see your reflection in and maybe try brushing your hair. (I'm sure there are YouTube videos on this but I think you should stay away from the computer) this may prove difficult :|

7: ok, shoes.... Sorry this should've been step 5.... Don't panic!! We can do this!!. Just put your feet in them....

Sooo by now you should look half decent, or maybe like a clown... Either way some one will like you. Just be careful around kids if you do look like a clown.

8: LEAVE THE HOUSE!
(maybe travel in the direction of some local hang out spots.. NOT THE PARK DRESSED AS A CLOWN.... Try a bar/pub or even a night club. These place usually have girls! I know right it's friggen unbelievable!!! I almost faint at the thought!)
in a night club the generally play music. Try dancing?? Or not if your a clown. That shit will be funny as!. Girls like dancing and dancers it shows confidence!

So by now you should have started communicating with the opposite sex and have made some great contacts. If not, you may have to seek medical advice.

Ill pray for you on your quest!

Answer

Best weight loss program

best athletic shoes overweight women image

Vangorn200

An overweight man received an e-mail advertising a program guaranteeing 10lb weight loss over 3 days. He was skeptical but had nothing to lose, so he sent his information back and signed up. A week later, he hears a knock at the door, and a beautiful 20 year old voluptuous redhead answers, wearing nothing but running shoes. She explains she is a representative of the weight loss company, and says, "If you catch me, you can have me!" Immediately, the man starts chasing her. After quite a bit of huffing and puffing, he finally manages to catch her and has his way. The woman appears each day for three days, with the same result. Then, the man weighs himself and finds he has indeed lost 10 pounds.

He is enthused, so decides to sign up for the 5 day 20 lb weight loss program. The next day, a very athletic blond appears at the door, wearing nothing but running shoes. She explains who she is, and says, "If you catch me, you can have me!" Again the man chases. The athletic woman gives him a great run for his money, being in excellent shape, but again he catches her to have his way. After 5 days of the routine, the man weighs himself again and finds he has indeed lost 20 more pounds.

He is delighted and calls the company to ask for their maximum program...lose 50 lbs in 10 days. "Are you sure, sir?" the rep asks. "This is the most intense program we sell." "Of course!" the man replies. "Your program really works great and I haven't felt so good in years!"

A few days later, the man hears a knock at the door, and opens it to find a huge, burly, hairy, menacing man standing there. He explains he is a representative of the weight loss company and tells him, "If I catch you, your a** is mine!"

14 year old girl, what to wear for first time at gym?

Just Some

I'm a stone or two overweight and my thighs/hips are my biggest part. So I'd prefer not to begin wearing shorts although my friend- who I'm going with- said I'd get too sweaty in joggers.
I'm getting nike air max 1, would that be suitable since they are running shoes but I found out about through fashion crazes

So I'd like to know the full outfit on what to wear and what to bring like a waterbottle

many thanks x
And do I NEED a sports bra..get called flat chested haha so can I just wear a regular bra

Answer
Are you deciding on clothes for exercising or clothes for fashion?

It doesn't matter about fashion when you go to the gym. If you don't want to wear shorts you should wear Women's workout capris or workout pants.

Wear athletic or gym t-shirts. If you don't wear T-shirts wear athletic gym shirts.

Bring a water bottle of course, but not plastic ones, bring reusable plastic bottles.

And get some deodorant. Sometimes people need it.

If you have long hair, wear a headband to get less sweat near your forehead.

Water will be important to balance your body's water inside. Sweat glands decrease the body's level of water but bringing reusable water bottles will balance it all out. Remember wear socks that are higher than the ankles. DO NOT wear ankle socks. They can hurt your ankles when you're exercising. Hope I help! Motivate yourself as well!

Since you have flat feet, you need to get shoes that have medial support. Some of the shoes i would recommend you wear is the Brooks Adrenaline GTS or Asics GT 2150. They are good for overpronators.

What should i pack for my trip to Europe this summer?

Q. This summer I'm traveling to Europe for the first time! I'm going to Ireland, Paris and London. Any help with what to pack, including clothes and fashion, would be great! I love to wear trendy stuff, so I don't want to stick out in a foreign place. I know to pack light, because I'm only going to 8 days. Thanks!

Answer
Honestly, if you try to be a "trendy" tourist you'll probably over do it and look kinda dumb. When I went to Europe I brought shorts and skirts (because it was summer and that's what I wear here in the US during the summer). Apparently, that is not very common (at least in smaller towns) and is considered trashy- I'd compare it to the equivalent of showing cleavage and stomach here in the states- not many people really do it, and it is considered "skanky" sometimes. However, just like in the US, you can get away with it more easily in the big cities. Just be sure you aren't baring lots of skin if you're visiting any religious places.

I'd pack dresses, skirts, and leggings, jeans, maybe a pair of slacks or dress pants for going out to dinner or visiting a museum or other things like that...

All I can say is, as fun as trendy sounds, heels just aren't gonna work when you're travelling and visiting all over. It's highly doubtful you'll be running into anyone you know, so throw on a classy top, the aforementioned bottoms, and some comfy but cute shoes- maybe flats with good arch support, low wedges, or slip-ons.

Have a great time!

Is Asics a good brand name for running shoes?

I currently have Nikes, can Asics stand a chance?

Answer
Asics are MUCH BETTER THAN NIKES. Look at any decent runner, the fastest runners wear asics for a reason. the newbies buy nikes because they are trendy and look cool and come in a million colors but they just aren't made for runners, theyre made for exercising. Asics is a running shoe company so they focus on running, Nike makes a million types of sport shoes so they don't focus on what a runner's foot really needs beyond what's in their wallet. Asics knows about flat feet, wide feet, knee problems, shin splints, over pronaters, etc. Try on a few pairs of asics, find one that fits well and try it, you'll love them.

saucony is a great brand for older runners because they sell shoes with more cushioning

i don't get it. all the runners i know, including me, wear asics, and i go on Yahoo answers and every one wears nikes.

It's time for me to buy some new running shoes and i need to know what i should be looking for. I usually run around 4-5 miles, but i try to run it quickly so I'm not sure what i need. Also, any advice/tips would be much appreciated.

Answer
Everyone has a running form. For me personally, i over-pronate, meaning my feet dont come down on a straight line. I put more force on the outsides/insides of my feet. This causes me to use stability shoes with more cushion, while sacrificing weight. If you have a neutral running form, then a "neutral shoe" is what would work for you. Neutral shoes dont have as much support, but are lighter. Its all about your style

What are the criterias in selecting a running shoes?

sum142121

What are the things I should keep in mind while buying the perfect running shoes.
Is it the shape of my sole ?
I even had the same work shoes for over a year now and the running shoes for over 2 years.

Answer
First, an average lifespan of a running shoe is a year, i guess is time for you to change a new pair. Just take note, each running shoe they are different and each brand they cater different kind of runner as well. What you need to take note is, your arch type.

Running shoe regardless of brand, they have the support known as stability shoe and the cushioning shoe. Stability running shoe is meant for low arch and for over-pronators. While for cushioning running shoes, they are neutral towards high arch and for neutral or under-pronators. You might not understand all these terms but they are real important in getting the correct pair of running shoe. Best, visit a running shoe store and ask the sales staff or expert to help you check out for your arch and running form.

Another thing, you need to consider is your mileage, your body-weight and the terrain you are going to run. If you are going for speed-workout probably you need a lightweight shoe. But bear that in mind, your weight plays a role too. As we run, we add impact to the ground, each step you make is a 3-4 times of weight to the ground so your midsole must be moderate for you. Different outsole meant for different terrain. If you are running on the roadside, pavement or park simply get a normal outsole running shoe. If you are going for trail, that is then different.

There is no about the shape for sole but your arch and running strike and form.

good luck!
