How long did it take you to get your calve strength up to par running barefoot on hard surfaces?

Jack

The only thing currently holding me back while running barefoot is the backside of my calves. They just can't hold out very long endurance wise running on hard surfaces such as concrete. I run on soft surfaces like trails whenever I can and have no problem, but this isn't always an option for me. So I've been trying to strengthen my calves so I don't have this issue anymore. After a year of running however, I have still yet to achieve stability in my calves endurance wise. I can only run a mile or so before I just can't go any farther. Whereas in normal running shoes, I can run for far longer distances. How long did it take you to be able to run barefoot without calve issues and do you have any recommendations for me as an amateur barefoot runner? Thank you.

Answer
Having grown up as a barefoot runner I never had to make the transition from shod running. My feet and legs were accustomed to the barefoot posture and running stance - which generally means running forward on the front of the foot rather than running upright on the flat of the foot or heel.

I have never been able to run long distance in shoes and I have never won a race over any distance with shoes. Barefoot is a different thing altogether, because the foot is functioning as it was originally designed. Barefoot I have won many long distance and marathon races, but I am not a sprinter, so short distance does not feature often in my trophy cabinet.

Sometimes I have had the opportunity to work with a person trying to adapt from shoes to barefoot. It is usually a matter of getting the mind to accept that being barefoot is ok rather than anything else. I have only once come across the problem you describe with calve muscles, and that guy tried hard for months to get his foot to contact the ground correctly, but had worn shoes from childhood and was far too long into the habit (he was about 30 years old at the time) to be able to adapt. He learnt from the problem and made sure his son, at that time just a child, never wore shoes except for some formal occasions. His son still has natural bare feet and runs like the wind. He now outperforms me, for which I am grateful.

I am sorry I can't give you some advice to help, but I thought I would tell you my story in any case. I am a professional person and have no trouble being barefoot most of the time.

My daughter is going to start GIRLS ON THE RUN, it's a 10week program twice a week, what's a good running shoe?

lil liz

what is a good running shoe for my 8 year old? and does it really matter, just as long it's a running shoe?

Answer
You should take her to a reputable running store, and ask them which shoes will be best. If the store you go to won't, or can't, help you, then go to another until you find a good one that will help you.

Young growing bones need a good shoe, and just listening to someone over the internet isn't going to provide you with a shoe that fits correctly, and gives the support that her feet needs. You need an expert to see how the shoe fits, and make sure that the shoes will give her feet support, and room to grow.

There are many different types of running shoe, and there are many different types of feet and running style. You need to have a pair that will suit you, and this is especially important for children.

I have searched everywhere, but I cannot find shoe soles that are unattached to shoes for sale. If anyones knows where I can buy them please let me know. Thank you!

Answer
You can find cheap shoe soles on Amazon. I did a quick search and got this in return on Amazon.

4 and a half star ratings on Amazon. These shoe soles are made from polyester and are comfortable. They can be worn all day long. They are great for running shoes, cross trainers, hiking boots and work boots. They relieve pain & soreness from flat feet, bunions, back and knee pain, and plantar fasciitis.

You can find customer reviews on Amazon.

Here is what one person said:

"I have very bad feet. I purchased the Sole Unisex Softec Ultra Insole in a women's 6.5 size. They were recommended by a soldier who had worn them in Iraq, and recommended I buy them due to my platea faceitus and heel spurs. They are life saving to my feet. I will buy more and more. I HIGHLY recommend." by Jean M. Chalupsky

How to tell if certain sneakers are good for running?

.....

I shop at discount stores so they have wider selections of shoes than department stores, but when buying sneakers how do I know if they would be good for running? And how to buy good running sneakers (after I find out they're for running)? Don't say ask the sales person because it's a discount store and they're high schoolers so don't know more than me. Thanks.

Answer
Nothing wrong with shopping at a discount sport stores for your shoes. But you better know what you want when you go in. Best way is to go to a local running store and with the help of the friendly and knowledgeable salesperson find a couple of pairs that are suitable for you to run in.

Then go to your discount store and look for those you like. Let me stress that buying a good shoe is more important then any other piece of running gear you will buy. With of course for women a good sports bra for support. Be prepared even at the cheaper running stores to pay 90 â 150 dollars for shoes.

Depending on the distance you want to run your shoes should last 400 â 600 miles. Even at a modest 20 miles a week (approx 3 miles a day) the shoes will last 6 months if you take care of them. So for a dollar a day, skip the coffee by running shoes.

What is the most supportive running shoe from Nike?

Devon

I'm looking for a long-lasting, supportive running shoe preferably from Nike. All of my other running shoe's support break through and go flat after a long time and I'm looking for a running shoe that has GREAT support on the high arcs on my feet that will last a long time!

Answer
1. Nike zoom structure 11 or 12 is posted for overpronators. Great shoe.

2. What you are probably looking for is a good insole. Look into green or blue superfeet insoles. Kind of expensive at arround 40 bucks but well worth it! Take your favorite pair of shoes into a fleet feet or other running store and ask them to cut them for you. You can do it your self but be sure to do it correctly. Make sure it has a few mm to move inside the shoe while running. Do not buy a gel type insert. They are the opposite of what you are looking for. Good luck!!!

Hi. I'm looking for new sneakers right now.
Teen
Prefers skate shoes
Not a big fan of bright colors on shoes...so maybe just black, gray, white, or a bit of red?
Can't buy converse because of parents (don't ask lol)
Oh and I usually have to run miles for my P.E. class
So do you guys have any suggestions??

Answer
I agree. Vans are my shoe of choice. On their website, you can custom design some pairs...otherwise, try to see if there is a Vans Outlet near you. They are a staple at most Outlet Malls. here are some other places to get them..

http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/womens/shoes/skate/PRD~455271/Vans+Lyndon+Skate+Shoes.jsp?prtID=pfx&src=k108283&cm_mmc=Performics-_-Affiliate-_-ShopStyle.com-_-Primary

Or shoes.com / zappos.com

DCs and Etnies are okay, but Vans stand the test of time better. WAY better. I still have Vans from high school and I'm almost 30 (how sad is THAT?!). The other plus? My girly feet are just as comfortable in an appropriately sized Men's pair as Women's. My DCs and my Etnies just aren't as good as any of the Vans I have.

I run on a daily basis, i have one flat foot that i wear orthotics for and whenever i run, my feet hurt and start to numb. I feel like when i run i put alot of pressure on my feet. Would the barefoot running shoes be a good way to help prevent my sore feet? Or what other shoes would be a good alternative?

Answer
The 'toe shoes' wouldn't work because they are shaped with an arch so it would probably make it worse! Sorry about your numb feet, maybe someone else knows something!

Do you know of any running shoes that specilise in shoes for flat footed runners?

You need in insert to correct your flat feet, either something off the self or made by a foot doctor.

I'm trying to get into running but I have a few issues with my feet. I'm slightly flat-footed and on my right foot, I tend to roll from the outer heel to the inner toe when I walk or run. I know I can get shoes designed to help me with these issues and prevent injury, but I have no idea where to buy them! I also don't know what specifically I need, so does anyone know of a place that sells specialty shoes where they can set up a custom system for your foot problems?

Answer
Go to any running specialty store and they'll help you. Running shoes (and insoles) are designed to specifically help with that kind of stuff. They just need to see you in person and help you find what's specifically suited to you.

Don't try to figure out your first running shoes on your own, and don't go to a generic sporting goods store either.

Sharp Pain In My Heal?

best running shoes retrocalcaneal bursitis image
Q. I played a hell of alot of basketball when I was young, I would train may be 4 hours a night during the week and at least 8 hours a day at the weekends, I'm not sure if this is what has caused my problems but I gave up basketball a good 7 years ago but ever since then if I put any pressure on the heal of my right foot I get like a sharp pain shooting up the back of my lower leg, on some occasions it has caused me to go of balance and fall over.

Is this an old sports injury? What could it be?

Answer
Heel Pain

Every mile you walk puts 60 tons of stress on each foot. Your feet can handle a heavy load, but too much stress pushes them over their limits. When you pound your feet on hard surfaces playing sports or wear shoes that irritate sensitive tissues, you may develop heel pain, the most common problem affecting the foot and ankle. A sore heel will usually get better on its own without surgery if you give it enough rest. However, many people try to ignore the early signs of heel pain and keep on doing the activities that caused it. When you continue to use a sore heel, it will only get worse and could become a chronic condition leading to more problems. Surgery is rarely necessary.

Evaluation and treatment

Heel pain can have many causes. If your heel hurts, see your doctor right away to determine why and get treatment. Tell him or her exactly where you have pain and how long you've had it. Your doctor will examine your heel, looking and feeling for signs of tenderness and swelling. You may be asked to walk, stand on one foot or do other physical tests that help your doctor pinpoint the cause of your sore heel. Conditions that cause heel pain generally fall into two main categories: pain beneath the heel and pain behind the heel.

Pain beneath the heel

If it hurts under your heel, you may have one or more conditions that inflame the tissues on the bottom of your foot:

Stone bruise: When you step on a hard object such as a rock or stone, you can bruise the fat pad on the underside of your heel. It may or may not look discolored. The pain goes away gradually with rest.

Plantar fasciitis (subcalcaneal pain): Doing too much running or jumping can inflame the tissue band (fascia) connecting the heel bone to the base of the toes. The pain is centered under your heel and may be mild at first but flares up when you take your first steps after resting overnight. You may need to do special exercises, take medication to reduce swelling and wear a heel pad in your shoe.

Heel spur: When plantar fasciitis continues for a long time, a heel spur (calcium deposit) may form where the fascia tissue band connects to your heel bone. Your doctor may take an X-ray to see the bony protrusion, which can vary in size. Treatment is usually the same as for plantar fasciitis: rest until the pain subsides, do special stretching exercises and wear heel pad shoe inserts.

Pain behind the heel

If you have pain behind your heel, you may have inflamed the area where the Achilles tendon inserts into the heel bone (retrocalcaneal bursitis). People often get this by running too much or wearing shoes that rub or cut into the back of the heel. Pain behind the heel may build slowly over time, causing the skin to thicken, get red and swell. You might develop a bump on the back of your heel that feels tender and warm to the touch. The pain flares up when you first start an activity after resting. It often hurts too much to wear normal shoes. You may need an X-ray to see if you also have a bone spur.

Treatment includes resting from the activities that caused the problem, doing certain stretching exercises, using pain medication and wearing open back shoes.

Your doctor may want you to use a 3/8" or 1/2" heel insert.

Stretch your Achilles tendon by leaning forward against a wall with your foot flat on the floor and heel elevated with the insert.

Use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and swelling.

Consider placing ice on the back of the heel to reduce inflammation.

I've been running in 992's and can't find them anymore. Whats a good replacement? The 993 is not that good for me.
Also, I have flat feet - should I switch to a narrow or wide from my customary D?

Answer
I understand loyalty to a brand...it is your feet, and you are a runner, after all. I have had good success with Brooks Adrenaline series; Asics gels..2150 is their newest version..are a favorite of my friends. I also use and enjoy New Balance . Marathoning friends like the 858. It is a good idea to find a good running shop with knowledgeable sales men or women who can look at your foot, your stride, and your history and make some solid recommendations for what kind of shoe might be best for you. Some will allow you to take them for some test runs...to see how they work for you.

When you are laying out a hundred bucks or so for a shoe that lasts three months or so...you deserve to use the right pair of shoes. 992s were awesome shoes, btw.

There really isn't a perfect shoe that fits for everyone. But, I use Nike Air Zoom Elite +4 for women and they are breathable, lightweight, responsive and cushioned running shoes. Try out the Nike Air Zoom Elite +4 for men or the Nike Air Pegasus +26, which is Nike's best selling running shoe - many people have sworn by it. I'm sure you'll be able to find that at Footlocker and many specialty or retail running stores. Hope this helps! :)

Is the Nike Zoom W2 a good shoe for hurdling?

CheerCapta

I really like the Nike Zoom W2 shoe, but I'm not sure if I should get them. It says they're mid-distance, which I know I'll need for hurdling, but other than that I'm a sprinter, so would they work well? Thanks in advance (:

Answer
Hurdlers
Great hurdlers must be versatile enough to run in a fast and rhythmic pattern that will enable them to feel that they are sprinting over the barriers rather than jumping over the 42-inch hurdles. Ideally, your center of gravity should lift only a little when you clear the hurdles. Two shoe models in 2011 that were specifically designed for hurdlers are the Adidas Edge Arriba 2M and the Asics Hyper MD.
The Nike Zoom W2 Women's Track Field Shoe is a women's-specific track spike that provides optimal performance in events ranging from the 800-5,000m.Mesh upper with overlays for ventilation and support Midfoot arch bandage for a snug, supportive fitThin EVA wedge for added lightweight cushioningFour-pin spike plate and solid rubber outsole for durable, reliable tractionDesigned, developed and tested for female middle-distance runners.
Women's NIKE® ZOOM W2 :: Designed, developed and tested specifically for women, the Nike® ZOOM W2 is a gravity-defying-lightweight middle-distance track running shoe with a minimal sheer-mesh upper for incredible breathability. Internal arch bandage locks your foot in place for turns-on-a-dime performance.
Sprinters / Hurdlers:

If you're a sprinter or a hurdler, you know the kind of power you can put out. Sprinting and hurdling shoes help you try to transfer as much of this power as possible into forward momentum. They have stiff front soles, with very little material in the heel at all, as ideal form involves minimal heel contact. As a result, if you run a longer event, like the 400m run or 330m hurdles, you may want to test a middle distance shoe as well before buying. Sprint shoes tend also to have high numbers of spikes. Be sure to check with race officials to see how many spikes are legal to use before competing

I hope this help you in your search!

What is a good, yet cheap camera flash for my canon rebel 2ti?

Lt. Riley

I'm looking for a good flash for my camera but I am on a budget so I can't really afford one of the expensive canon flashes. Looking for hopefully something that is not past around 50 dollars. Also I am not really taking professional pictures, so I really DON'T need an expensive one.

Answer
Not much to spend, but still it should be enough.

Ebay is your friend here. A brand called Yongnuo (yes, it's Chinese all the way) sells a flash model YN-460 that is well under $50, yet perfectly capable for most uses. It is a fully manual flash, so you will have to take that into account and use your camera in manual mode when shooting flash.

If you would like a little help from the flash, you can get a brand new Vivitar 285HV for somewhere between $80 and $90. This is an auto thyristor flash unit. It has a sensor in the flash that can control the amount of light emitted. You still have to shoot in manual mode, but the flash helps you get the exposure right.

The least expensive flash (worth buying) with full E-TTL control is going to run you just over $100. The Metz 36 series. Not terribly powerful, but enough for most folks that aren't trying to light up cavernous rooms.

You can also find bargains in the used market for good old Sunpak or Metz handle mounts. Something like my Sunpak 522 Auto runs less than $50 in working condition. More powerful than most of the shoe mount models, auto thyristor control, generally good stuff. There are also used shoe mounts out there, even cheaper. I would prefer to actually get my hands on a flash before I bought it for testing purposes.

A place like http://www.keh.com is a good place to find old flash units in (tested) working condition. You won't find a Canon E-TTL model for your price, but there are plenty of auto units that will work just fine on there.

About nine years ago I was packing for a trip when there was a knock on my door. I opened it, and there was my neighbor, naked. She was obviously battered and bruised, and she was crying and barely coherent. She told me her boyfriend had just beaten and raped her and was holding their five-month-old baby girl hostage. I got her a blanket and called 911. What followed was a nightmare.

My home was surrounded by police officers and detectives. My yard was declared a crime scene and cordoned off with yellow tape. I was forbidden to leave my living room. I was interrogated by the police like I was a criminal, first by one officer and then by another. They played the good cop/bad cop thing, one being really nice to me and one treating me like I was garbage and yelling at me and threatening me with being charged with a crime if I lied. I was home alone and very confused and frightened, and I was angry at the police for playing this game with me.

When the investigation was over, guess what happened? The woman was arrested because it turns out she beat the shet out of her boyfriend so badly he had to go to the hospital, and he locked her out to keep her from attacking the baby. She was naked because she was too stoned to bother with clothing. The "good cop" followed up with me later and explained the whole thing to me.

Would I have left the man in the street? No, of course not! I would have at least called 911, and most probably would have sat down in the street next to him to try to comfort him until help came. But I might have regretted it, based on the experience above.

The world is complicated, and people are cold, callous and indifferent to the sufferings of others. Video games, movies, television and the secularization of society is the reason why. The second reason is nice people who will lay their lives on the line for someone else get tired of being pushed around and taken advantage of, and when they decide to draw the line and say no more, the world gets a little lonelier. I am neither callous nor tired of being pushed around. I am cynical and jaded and I never believe what I read and rarely believe what I see.

(I never got my blanket back either.)

Please fast forward seven years. Same neighborhood, different house. My husband woke me up in the middle of the night saying, "There's a woman laying on our lawn!" I did not believe him, but he assured me there was. He said he was awakened by her crying for help. I ripped the blanket off the bed and told him to take it to her, as it was only 12 degrees that night. Then I called 911 as I ran downstairs.

There was indeed a woman laying on our front lawn, without shoes or a coat. She was crying very faintly, "Help me." We don't know how long she had been there or how much longer she would be able to survive that kind of exposure. Her cries were very weak. The 911 operator wanted me to give her medical information on the woman. I said I did not know her and was not capable of assessing her condition. I was pissed as hell at the operator and scared to death and just wanted the cops to get there.

The cops came. Seven cruisers full of cops. One ambulance. One fire truck. They pulled the cars up to our front porch and one deputy proceeded to yell at me for not taking the woman in my house. I told her the house was mine and I will decide who enters it. The cops retrieved the woman from the lawn, calling her by name and making fun of her. It turns out they know each other. The woman is a methadone and OxyContin addict who had wandered off in her delirium. Their interest in helping her was basically zero. I went to the police cruiser and made sure she was covered, and I had to insist that the deputies cover her feet. I tried to calm her down, as she was frightened and crying.

Before the cops took off, I told my husband I wanted my blanket back. I lost a blanket many years before during the previous incident, and I didn't want to lose another. My blankets are $100 each. My husband went to get it back from the deputy, and she told him it was filthy after touching that woman and he should sanitize it. That's lovely. I didn't think she was dirty at all.

This lady very well could have died on our lawn, and by the grace of God my husband heard her cries. I would not have heard her, and my dogs did not alert us. Later we found out other neighbors saw her there but didn't want to get involved.

I'm thankful and grateful to God we helped her. I'm not grateful that the neighbors watched the whole thing like we're circus freaks, and I'm not grateful for the scolding the cops gave us, a lawn job courtesy of their cruiser, and the sleepless night.

I'm also not thankful that the next day the woman was returned home and found nearly dead in the middle of the street

Haven't got climbing shoes and climbing Snowdon?

Forrest Gu

Hey, i haven't got any climbing shoes and im going to climb snowdon, it will probably take about 5 hours of walking too, will it be fine? :(

Getting climbing shoes isn't an option as i don't have time, my question is, will it be ok?

Answer
OK, no big problem. Best with walking boots..not climbing boots which are much stiffer....but trainers are fine if the soles are still grippy. It can get wet on Snowdon.....careful of slippy rock.
If you really mean climbing shoes...rock climbing shoes...well, they're not of much use for a walk up Snowdon. There's no rock climbing on the Pyg track or the Llanberis path...it's an uphill walk and then a downhill walk.
I do mountain running in trainers and low cut walking boots. Been up Snowdon maybe fifteen times or so walking or running.
Trainers are popular for mountain running for both men and women.

Take it easy, watch your step and keep your feet dry...the big thing when you're walking is dry feet.
When they get wet the skin softens, tiny rubs get to be damaging rubs and a blister blows up.....
Thin cotton socks with thick woollen socks outside, firm but not tight fitting footwear, and keep dry....no friction then and no blisters.
I used to treat over 300 a day of them on the Njimegan Liberation Marches in Holland...fabulous walking event with military and civilian teams from round the world and enormous parties and Blister Balls. Working all evening and marching next morning.
Four days of Paradise and fun.

I was in a British Army marching team and I was a medic for the British military contingent but we treated all who came to us and for free...that's why they came. Busy old time.
Blisters are not fun. We drained them and filled them with Friars Balsam for the really bad ones for the top competitive teams who had to succeed at any price...honour and pride, a country's ambassadors in sport, the memory of who went before and the reason for the Marches, ...whatever reason, do not fail. Honour with victory those who we remember. And go home with a Nijmegan Cross.
Leave the balsam to get into the skin for a few seconds, drain it out, and put a dressing over it. Agony, and it turns swarthy soldiers into crying wrecks for a few minutes, but they can march the next day...with tanned skin....tanned hide that is, instead of raw skin.
Like tanning leather, but on live raw skin under the blister..
God, it hurts!!
Civvies got gentler treatment.....all TLC and sweet dressings. Met some lovely people, gorgeous girls from around the world...and treated their feet, haha
Take it steady....keep an eye on the weather and eat well. Mountains and hunger go together.
All that fresh air and exercise. Great view though...enjoy it.

I am looking for a good woman's shoe. My feet are on the narrow side and I have high arches. I run on cinder tracks but frequently I run on the road. I don't mind paying extra if it is worth it. So, what is the price range for good running shoes and which brands should I go for?

Answer
Check out department stores in the late fall/early winter. Last year's styles will be on sale to make room for the new models for the upcoming track and field season. You can typically get shoes that would have cost $100 or more last spring for under $50, some as cheap as $25 or $30. If you have a Kohl's near you, its a good place to start.

I typically wear Nike or ASCICS, New Balance are good as well. For the mileage you're running, a pair of running shoes will last you a very long time.

Every time I run the arch of my left foot starts to hurt and it feels like it is tearing?

Q. It hurts when i run with my running shoes and when I run in my cleats. Its hurts more on the right side on my left foot.

Answer
Try releasing the muscle under your foot to see if that is the one making that pain happen. Here's how to release it:
Foot Muscle:
With your foot in your lap place your fingers side by side at the back of the arch right in front of the heel and press in hard and hold. After 30 seconds slowly raise your toes up as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your toes there for another 30 seconds.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

What are good running shoes for hiking as well?

Bam Boom

I am going hiking/walking on trail terrain and I noticed that I really don't have any running shoes or shoes for this as well. Can someone advise me to which shoes are very comfortable for running but can also be used a few times without strain for hiking/trails? Oh and by running shoes I mean for women. Thank you!

Answer
I have a pair of New Balance All Terrain running shoes that are great for that. They are not so good for intense running on treadmills or pavement however. Good luck and Happy Trails

Ik this sounds crazy but my dream is to go to the nfl as a tailback, but most of the tailbacks you see are around 5'10-6'2. I'm in 7th grade and already 5'9, wear size 14 shoes, and weigh 140. I really don't want to grow over another 3 inches. The highest I would accept is 6'3. But these height predictor test and other things are predicting me to be 6'4-6'6. If I was that size linebackers would get low and blow my chest up. I want to be a quick, fast running back, not a tall one like Brandon Jacobs. I'm really fast, the fastest one in my grade actually, but I can easily get my ankles broke because of how tall I am. Is there any methods I can do to help my height stay average (5'10-6'2). My dad is 5'11 and wears a size 12 1/2 shoe. my mom is 5'9 and wears a size 10 in women's. I dont see why I'm so huge! Please give me some tips and warnings on things that can make you taller. Thanks

Answer
There are ways to stunt your growth. One of my friends is 4'9 the same height as me, but they don't think she'll grow anymore.
1) she doesn't eat properly and doesn't get enough calcium.
2) she exercises loads.

What shoes are good for rock climbing?

best running shoes rei image

EmeraldMoo

Rock climbing is just a casual hobby, so I don't want to fork out the money on professional climbing shoes. Can I use sneakers or some other kind of shoe? What actually makes a good climbing shoe? I will be using mostly indoor walls.

Answer
ive been an avid rock climber for almost ten years...get rock climbing shoes if you intend to climb regularly. there is nothing more scary than placing your foot on a ledge no wider than a centimeter and feeling your feet slipping around inside your shoe. talk about a major sphincter check. plus climbing shoes are designed to place the toes in the most powerful position to allow for adequate stepping and their soles are made of sticky soft rubber so slippage is minimized. going barefooted may seem logical, but stepping on sharp points of rock and placing all your weight on it can be excuriatingly painful. plus, sweaty feet equals slippery feet. there are large numbers of climbing shoes that are quite affordable as well. look at brands like mad rock, evolv, mammut, or search websites like REI.com. ive seen shoes as cheap as 50 to 60 dollars.....about the same cost as running shoes.....if youre going to climb regularly, this is the best advice i can give you, from one climber to another...good luck and aloha

What can you do in place of a long outdoor run when you live in the Northeast and everything is iced up?

jjbsdoll

I am a long time long distance runner who does 8 miles a day and who has run during some bad winters but the city where I live keeps getting worse and worse each year about cleaning up after snow/ice storms. Treadmills and gyms are not an option. Also, if you have ideas on how to run on snow covered ice and slush,I'll take those too.

Answer
I used to laugh when I saw people running with snow shoes. I too was a distance runner and cross country skier in the winter. In Minnesota we can have some pretty crappy days for winter running.

My old coach began running 10k snowshoe races 12-15 years ago. These guys are fast! real repectable times.....and with snow shoes.
look at REI or a local outdoor gear place. The newest generation of snow shoes are designed for many situations and surfaces, including mixed ice.
