Are converse shoe sizes different than regular?

tj

I wear a mens 11 but i heard converse runs a bit larger. should i go with a whole size less? helppppp. i can probably fit into a 10.5 but they don't carry it in that size.

Answer
For women it runs larger, for men I hear it is spot on. The reason is because it is in men's sizes anyway.

What size am I in Nikes?

FashionFie

I want to buy some Nike Free Run+3 running shoes for women but I don't know what size I would be in them.
I'm a true 5.5 in every shoe so I was wondering whether I'd be the same size or not..
Thanks!

Answer
I special ordered performance Nike shoes for cheerleading and got the same size that I wear for everything else 9. But when I got them they were very tight and they wouldn't let me return them. They said that Nike doesnt make all their shoes the same fit in sizes, meaning i should have ordered a size 10 or 10.5 since their brand is not made for wide feet which mine are. My dad got really angry and they took them back. I have a size nine in Nike running shoes and they fit perfectly. If your buying online, I would suggest getting a size six just in case the same thing happens to you.

What's the best running shoe for overpronators?

coinqueen2

I started running after seeing my friend complete the NYC Marathon (Nov 1 09) and haven't stopped since.

Now that I'm getting more involved in building my base mileage (I'm up to 13 miles/ week now!), I'm beginning to realize how inappropriate my running sneakers are. Before running, I was heavily involved in just a 30 minute cardio routine and 75 minutes of very regimented weight training. So the New Balance 411 was okay for my regular workouts, but I'm finding it's not the best for my running.

After speaking with a friend who works in the running shoe business, he suggested that I stick with a New Balance shoe but come up to an 800 or a 900 level shoe.

I'm a mild overpronator and I'm looking at the New Balance 1225 and the New Balance 850. Does anyone have any feedback regarding these shoes?

I started off by looking at the New Balance 993 and the New Balance 904 first but wasn't impressed with the descriptions and the reviews.

I appreciate any feedback you can give me on New Balance sneakers.

Answer
I overpronate too, and the Brook's Addition series has been good. I started with Addition 7's and now have Addition 8's.

But perhaps more useful to you is how I ended up with them. Go to a running store with video analysis setup. That's a treadmill for you to run on with a video recorder. They take a baseline video of you running in stocking feet, then they haul out their top 3 or 4 stability shoes, you try each one one and run in them while they record your feet. In the slow mo playback you can actually see which pair makes your feet the most stable. It's actually pretty easy to see when they use that slow motion playback

running help?

I need to start running. i never ever run. so how should i start. like twice around the block? then 4 times around the block. help?

Answer
First, good on you for wanting to start running! It is a great activity to add to one's life.

Now, about starting, there is a training principle by Bill Bowerman called "hard-easy or Hard-easy-easy." This means for a hard day, you need to follow it with an easy day or 2 easy days. So with this thought, we will assume that your hard day is when you run with your easy days being off or walking.

Depending on you, you can either run for distance or time. If you can measure a course, try to get a 1-mile loop. Start out by running 1 mile. Then the next day, either walk 1 mile or don't go out. The day after try the 1 mile distance again. And then next day walk 1 mile. Then the day after that go for 1.5 miles. Then take the next day off followed with the day after with 1 mile walk. Try that for a couple weeks.

Also, make sure to get some good running shoes. LOTS of models out there, so if you can get to a TRUE running store, work with a knowledgeable clerk. Tell them what you want to do. Don't be shy if it is just to run to stay in shape or you want to run NYC Marathon in 2008.

Make sure to get about 3 pairs of comfortable running shoes. And some running shorts. Given you are a female, talk to a female runner you see and ask her about a jog-bra. (What to look for and what is a good brand.)

Couple side notes are that for the first 6 months, your legs are going to feel like they were put into a meat grinder. And your little inner voice will tell you it is okay to take the day off as you can start tomorrow. Don't listen to them. Just keep going.

See if there is a local running club you can join. If there is, I bet you will be surpirse about hoiw many other people are like you (just starting).

Best Nike+ Running Shoes for OverPronation?

Abdullah

http://nikerunning.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikeplus/en_EMEA/footwear_finder

I'm a overpronation flat feet guy! with 85kg and 170cm height. trying to loss weight and trying to make running and jogging as a hobby .

The shoes finder suggested me

Nike Zoom Structure Triax+ 12
Nike LunarGlide+
Nike Run Avant+ e
Nike Zoom Equalon+ 3
Nike Air Alaris II+

I want a shoes that lives and lightweight and I can use it for daily life work not just running.

Hope you give me the best! because I'm gonna order it online.
Guys I'm overpronation because I've never wore a flat feet shoes never! and i'm 23 years old! why because my damn family in the past thought it's not a big deal. in fact it is! and I've never walked like a normal person with no pain every day since I'm a kid ( hope this helps)

Answer
I'm not a fan of Nike shoes however that doesn't affect my answer.

Which of the pairs did you find most comfortable when you tried them on? Remembering of course that once you get a blister in them and it bursts you can't return them and so have to buy another different model that might fit better. Then there is the pronation issue - get the wrong ones and it is your feet, calf's, shins, knees or hips that will suffer as you run/.

So my only advice is to get to a specialist running shop and try on the various pairs you want and see which fits the best and suits your running style the best - here to find one that suits your running style the shop assistants will be invaluable with that.

Of course once you have done that it is up to your conscience whether you want to buy from the people who have taken time and effort to give you good individual advice based on how your feet and legs move, ir to go online to a faceless shop for what is only a few ££ savings, and of course in the process help turn your high street into a half mile long pound shop when the other shops have to close through lack of custom.. Ahhh modern life, I love it

-EDIT-
Sorry - I gave the other answer a thumbs down. If you read online minimalist shoes are not for everyone and take work to strengthen your feet, To suggest using them without saying that for the first month or 2 you have to alternate them with your regular trainers and not as a replacement for them and to run short distances in them in this time is not a good answer - buy them and assume you can do a regular long run the next day is asking for metatarsel stress fractures

Overpronation, running, and shoes?

WannagoAF

I am just wondering if getting the proper running shoes can really help that much..

As of now, whenever I run my shins hurt so bad that I have to stop... I am looking for anything to improve my running experience and time.
I guess I should have added that I don't wear heavy shoes now. I do wear some light running shoes. I am just wondering if the type of shoe would make that much of a difference. (i.e. cushioning, stability etc..)
Unfortunately I do not have time to wait. I have been given one shot to pass an upcome fitness test.. I have to run the mile and a half in 12:30... I am 15:39 and have 3 weeks to get better. I will likely be getting shoes on Wed or Thursday.

Answer
Greetings,
I am no expert, but I am an avid runner and hiker. For me, shoes make a big difference. I believe the wrong shoe type for me can be hard on my feet, knees, and legs. You should determine your foot type and buy the proper shoes. Various shoe manufacturing web sites will explain foot types. For example, New Banlance and Asics have good information, but navigating the sites may be confusing. Unfortunately, you must know your shoes before buying them in stores because I have found most retail stores do not separate running shoes into categories of cushioned, motion control, or stability. The consumer must know that before hand.
Also, I found that wearing shoe to small and the wrong width for my feet has caused me problems in the past. Now, I buy shoes that give my toes room and I have had no problems.
It requires time and patience to find the correct shoes, but it is time well spent. Also, I have bought the wrong shoes in stores because I did not have the correct information, and thus I ended up suffering with the wrong shoes for me, until I could not stand to wear them one more mile!
Good luck there.

Good but cheap running shoes for a beginning but a highly enthusiastic runner.?

msherzodm

I have found life around here a little boring lately, especially during the summer, so I am seriously thinking about starting running. I have read some running blogs which have plenty of advice on how to run, but nothing on how to choose good and cheap running shoes. I have seen some Nikes and Asics and Mizunos (I am in Japan) but there are so many of them this appears to be an unsolvable dilemma. I could just get some Nikes for running, but don't want to guess on such a serious issue. Neither do I want to spend a fortune on them. Please advise. Thanks!

Answer
Running shoes are designed based on how a person's foot and ankle perform when running. Different shoes help in different ways. The type of shoe you need depends on how your particular body works.

I would suggest consulting a running store, have them look at how you run, and then get shoe suggestions. They're going to tell you that you overpronate, underpronate, or are a neutral runner. They'll also look at how much you weigh and some other factors. Remember what they tell you and then either buy some shoes they recommend or come back to your computer and research shoes that fit people who run the way you do (based on what the clerk at the running store tells you).

How often does the IAEA inspect these ongoing projects and why is there no talk of an ongoing project log?

The Real S

as those usually get media attention.
http://asiantribune.com/08/03/india-to-achieve-self-sufficiency-in-uranium-production-by-2013-kakodkar/
It seems that with 2 LW reactors and several HW reactors and no real consultative partnerships with any other governments regarding nuclear technology that there is a huge experimental stream in nuclear weapons and energy ongoing in India. The media hype does not seem to equate actual progress and it seems that regular inspection processes through international bodies such as the IAEA are not documented. That is reason for major regional insecurity especially since the types of reactors being created may be tied to some really old and faulty technology. As far as steel hardners are substances such as ulomite (sp) and others available in large quantities region wide? It is hard to imagine that a major international player is not involved in this project - is an entity such as Enron involved?

Answer
...when I was sixteen is cross country I ran 4 km in like just under 22 and I thought it was good...now I run 5 km once a month, each time I get around 17 mins 45 seconds, never under 17 and I am 6 foot 4, if it helps any I run 2 km a day and on last Friday of every month run the five, I time the 5 km ones not the 2 km daily ones, those ones I just do it as fast as I can, and not run on a tread mill I mean get out of the house into that awful thing called a sun and run outside, also I have mountain bike, go biking just for fun, instead of driving everywhere just ride your bike, help gain leg muscles, find a running buddy too, if you can't find one listen to music but dint sing, singing with cause you to get tired quicker, but having a running buddy give you someone to compete against and talk to/visit with, if you have a girlfriend ask if she would run with you, than it be more of quality time with her, not exactly a first date though, if you find a running buddy that's a girl maybe you would just run behind her and enjoy the view...whatever works man

What is the best athletic shoe for an overweight woman?

owl

Any overweight women know of a really comfortable athletic shoe that is good for walking for long periods of time? I'm having trouble finding a comfortable shoe that won't make my feet hurt while walking. And also one that isn't absolutely hideous.

Answer
Try buying shoes in a wider size. Plus size clothing stores like avenue, fashion bug, lane bryant, catherines, catos, ect. Have athletic shoes available in double wide as well. You can also check ebay. I found when I started exercising to lose weight most shoes were actually very comfortable, but after walking my feet leaned to the outside and it was uncomfortable. After buying a decent pair of tennis shoes in a wider size that fixed the problem. I didn't have to buy anything expensive, but you should if you want them to last longer and wear better.

I need a good pair of shoes for work, any suggestions?

Candace

I am a preschool teacher and I stay on my feet all day. I'm also a little overweight. I've been wearing a pair of Sketchers casual shoes (called Women's Bikers - Point Blank) but my feet are killing me. I love the look of my Sketchers, but I think they are killing my feet. I feel like I'm developing a tailor's bunion and the tips of my big toes are numb. Obviously, I need better shoes! But before I invest a good chunk of money on a pair of shoes, I am looking for suggestions.

I have suffered from plantar fasciitis in the past and it flares up occasionally, I'm fairly sure I am developing a tailor's bunion on the side of my right foot, and the tips of both of my big toes are constantly numb (but the color of my toes is good, they look normal). I'm on my feet all day at work. I wear a lot of khakis and I dress more casually, but I don't think athletic sneakers would really be work appropriate. Does anyone have any suggestions for nice looking (please, no nurses shoes), casual but work appropriate shoes that will help me feet? Remember, too, I'm just a preschool teacher so I doubt I can spring for shoes over $100 (without saving for a couple of months first, LOL).

Thanks in advance :)
I can't afford a trip to a podiatrist. I have no medical insurance (I teach preschool at a private school and make not much more than minimum wage). I haven't been on a vacation in years and I have the same TV I had when I was in high school 12 years ago (no flat screen here). I don't get to indulge in luxuries in my life in my present job (I'm looking for other employment, but so far, no luck). If I want to see a podiatrist, I'll have to save up for months and months. I'd kinda like to get a decent pair of shoes in the mean time.

what is the physics related to running shoes?

goodandbro

please give as much detail as possible.

Answer
Running shoes?

It's your running form that matters when it comes to running efficiency. For someone with a biomechanically perfect running form, shoes only need to protect the feet from broken glass and gravel.

But since those people are few and far between...running shoes are designed for people with 6 things in mind...
Is their footstrike, neutral, heel strike or forefoot strike -- and cushioning is provided in the appropriate place(s).
Does the person pronate, supinate or neutral with regard to arch stability. Again, cushioning is provided in the appropriate places.

So for example you could have a shoe designed for someone with a heel strike that supinates or pronates. (turns foot inside or outside when they run).

Running shoes are designed for about 6 types of runners with regard to foot striking and form. Then there's weight and terrain specific shoes --- e.g. ultra light racers and racing spikes or trail running shoes.

What kind of running shoes should I wear? Stability vs Neutral.?

Q. I went to Road Runner and they said my left ankle goes inward a lot so I need stability shoes. I've bought stability type running shoes before and they make my left ankle hurt. Then I switched to neutral shoes and they gave me big calluses, and now I'm back to Stability shoes like they told me to do but my left ankle still hurts a lot when I run. I've tried New Balance but the last type of shoes that I bought were Mizuno shoes.

Thank you!

Answer
i would choose stability shoes if you are over-pronating inwards, since stability shoes are designed to help runners not to pronate so much when they run.
i sugest you try sacouney hurricane 12's or hurricane 13's for the best stability shoe.

http://www.runningcompanyshoes.com/SauconyHurricane-12.html

also sacouney progrid guide (1-4) offer great control and stability.

http://www.runningcompanyshoes.com/SauconyGuide.html

Brooks revenna are said to be the bet stability shoes.

http://www.runningcompanyshoes.com/BrooksRavenna.html

if you want a shoe that will give you some support in the way of stability-ness you should try sacouney ride. they are a neautral shoe but i feel that they offer good support. (not as much as the ones listed above though)

http://www.runningcompanyshoes.com/SauconyRide.html

bottom line. i love stability shoes. so i'm going to recomend you to those lol

What i hate about flats is that once they run out, your feet look like a giant >_< but blisters can be helped, like using the blisters bandage, or just put bandage on your heel whenever you are wearing them.. if you really are doubting whether to get them or not, here are some alternatives:

Is there any place that sells adult athletic shoes in children's sizes?

irishdance

Okay, so I wear a kids 2 1/2 and I need to find a pair of athletic shoes that give good support and last longer than kids shoes. I don't know if this is possible, but it is really important. No I will not be growing anymore. Also, please don't try to tell me that kids shoes are as good as adult shoes, because they are not. I have gone through at least three pairs of athletic shoes in a year and a half and I need to find something that lasts and gives good support for my occupation (nursing).

Thank you.

Answer
Yeah this could be an issue. Generally, I think kids shoes are made to lower quality because most of the time their feet grows rapidly so the shoes don't have to be long lasting. Also, it's good for the shoe brands if you buy their products more frequently. Anyway, I suggest checking out some local shoe stores, maybe foot locket or Macy's if you have one around. They have a huge range of shoes, thus the chance you find a good one is higher. Good luck finding one!

Having heel pain and I'm a runner. Help?

Ok I just started training again 2 weeks ago after taking the winter off. I didn't go out especially hard, but I began to experience pain in my heel. It is not on the bottom of the heel, but instead, it is above the heel, kind of on one side of the heel, and it is below that big petruding bone (idk what it is called, but it is the noticeable one on the foot), at about 5 o'clock in relation to the bone. The pain is occuring in the left side of my right foot. I am nearly certain it is not a stress fracture, as it is only mild to moderate pain. However, I have been icing and resting for a few days, but I still do not feel a lot of relief. It is nearly unoticeable while walking, but I can begin to feel it when I run. I don't want to make it worse, but how should I go about solving this problem, and what could it be?

Also, I know resting and icing are good. I really want to know what exactly I should do.

Answer
See your health care provider as soon as possible (podiatrist). The most frequent causes of heel pain are sometimes referred to as injuries, but they aren't due to a single event such as a fall or twist. Each of the following problems usually brings tenderness and some swelling.
Plantar fasciitis:
Feet that flatten and roll inwardly (pronate) excessively when walking or running
Shoes with inadequate arch support
Sudden turns that put great stress on the ligaments
Running on hard surfaces or up hills
The retrocalcaneal bursa is a fluid-filled sac that surrounds the back of the heel. This may become inflamed (bursitis) due to pressure from shoes. For this reason, it is sometimes called a "pump bump." The inferior calcaneal bursa is located underneath the heel. Inflammation here is usually caused by landing hard or awkwardly on the heel.

The Achilles tendon is the large tendon that connects the calf muscles to the back of the heel. Achilles tendinitis occurs when the calf muscles repeatedly contract hard or suddenly. There are four factors that contribute to Achilles tendinitis:

Shortening of and lack of flexibility in the calf muscle--Achilles tendon unit (the main cause)
Shoes that don't provide good stability and shock absorption for the heel
Sudden inward or outward turning of the heel when striking the ground (this is due to the shape of the foot, an inherited trait)
Running on hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt (running hills may contribute further to this factor)

Achilles Tendinitis. Stop exercising, apply ice twice daily to the tendon, and take a pain reliever with each meal for a week. After that, stretching is the most important treatment. Remember to stretch and hold the stretched position. Do not bounce.

Achilles tendinitis. A stronger oral anti-inflammatory medicine may be prescribed, but cortisone injections aren't done because they may weaken the tendon and lead to rupture. In particularly resistant cases, a walking cast may be tried. Surgery is almost never recommended.

One method of stretching the Achilles tendon is wall push-ups.

Slow improvement is the rule in most cases. If things are getting worse despite home treatment or if there is little progress after a month, see your doctor. I hope this helps you. And good luck.

New to running, need help buying the right pair of shoes?

Caroline J

I started running in the beginning of the summer and thus far have no problems or injuries. I have knee problems in my families history so I'd like to do what I can while I'm young to keep my joints healthy. I'm having a hard time deciding what type of feet I have and what kind of shoe I need. I'm planning on heading to a running store but for now any advice would be appreciated. I wear women's size 8 usually, I have moderately wide feet, I have low arches but they definitely are not flat, when I look at my foot print there is a significant space where the arch is. Right now I'm running in a pair of old broken in New Balance Classics W595. They seem okay but I think I need some more support. I purchased a pair of motion control shoes online, Asics Gel-Evolution 9 since all the advice columns I've read seem to indicate that low arches mean overpronation. The shoes felt comfortable walking around, but when I took them on a run there seemed to be a lot of pressure that created some soreness in the inside of my foot by my arches. I'm wondering if this is supposed to happen since I do overpronate and have not ever worn motion control shoes OR is there discomfort because I do not overpronate and these shoes are not right for me. The discomfort did not last, just during the run.

Answer
Asics are really comfortable you will love them

What causes shin splints and what is the best way to treat them? How can I avoid them in the future?

T

I have started running again recently and now have shin splints so bad I can hardly walk. I am a 39 year old woman in fairly good physical shape, I work out regularly, not over weight and I have no physical problems short of the shin splints.. I walk on the tread mill and eliptical regularly with out much problem. The problem didn't start until I started running out side. I run on a concrete bridge with a slight grade (incase that makes a difference).
Thank you all for the fantastic answers! With that information I am able to determine that the fact that I am flat footed has a big impact. The shoes were fitted but my arch was not taken into account. I guess I need to go shopping again. :-)

Answer
Shin splints are most commonly caused by overpronation (foot roles in too much at the toe off phase of your gait/running motion). A neutral foot lands on the outside corner of your heel, roles inwards so that it is flat and then roles out on the angle of your toes at toe off. An overpronated foot lands on the outside of the heel, roles in flat but continues to roll in and comes off even with or inside the big toe side of the shoe. The reason this is a problem is that the muscle that is supposed to role you out at toe off (tibialis anterior muscle) is not strong enough to counter the weight of your body that has rolled your foot inwards too far. It continues to pull until it actually pulls itself off the bone where it attaches (this is what shinsplints are - shin splints are not a muscle fibre strain you are actually tearing muscle from the bone which is why it hurts so much and takes so long to heal). The reason why you didn't feel it before is because under less load (walking = less downward force and elliptical = no downward force) your body wasn't thrown into am overpronated position. Now that your are running the repetition of the overpronated state is resulting in shin splints.
To get rid of the shin splints you must first rest the muscle, ice wil help with the inflamation and pain. Next you need to get a really good pair of shoes designed to work with YOUR body. Just going and spending a lot of money will not gaurantee a good pair for you. It would be like buying a Ferarri for off roading - it's a great car but not for what you need. Look for a shoe that is designed for motion control. These styles have a very wide sole through the arch, are stiff if you try to "wring it out", have a very hard "heel counter" and have some type of a "medial post" (usually a dark grey foam of higher density running along the arch sie of the foot). If you aren't comfortable with these terms then go to your local running store and ask them. If they don't know these terms then walk away - they are not trained enough to assist you. A couple of models/brands that do produce some very good shoes for overpronators (motion control shoes) are Asics (gel 2100 series), Saucony (grid stable as one example) and New Balance. Do some research on their websites and they will have pictures to describe what I've talked about.

GOOD running shoes for woman?

Hinda

i do alot of intense running and i need some help finding pairs of sneakers that are good for my feet/legs. any advice? please only if you know what your talking about

Answer
Well to every runner there's a different shoe, i can't tell you what shoe will be best for you, but you can if you go to a running shop, or see a peditrist. i recommend going to a running shop, (like dick's sporting goods, or another place like that) and talking to the specialist there, they can usually tell you a good shoe.
What matters in running are the width and the arch of your foot, some shoes have support for high arches, and less for low, or flat feet, all this will factor into a good shoe. As far a brands, nike asics, newbalance, adidas are all good brands, it just depends on the style you want and the arch of your foot.
good luck

What is the best running shoe on the market for women?

Are You Se

I'm looking to get back into running. The last time I gave it up was because I couldn't seem to find a shoe that was comfortable enough. I'm not a huge fan of those shoes that say they lower impact, based on looks alone, but if many people find them great for running I would consider. Thank You!

Answer
I had the same problem. It really depends on how much you weigh, the arch of your foot, the running surface you will be training on, how many miles you run per week, if you are under pronate or over pronate...etc

Do yourself a favor and go to www.roadrunnersports.com and click on the "Shoe Dog". It will help you pick the right running shoe for your particular situation. I use it and highly recommend it.

hi. I need advice on running shoes.?

I Have just started running and need some advice on the best trainers to buy. My feet roll out to the side slightly, and my calf muscles hurt because of this. I'm also quite heavy footed. I'm going to the states tomorrow and ill probably be looking in Niketown but totally clueless as what to buy !! help would be appreciated..

Answer
You need to get fitted in a running specialty shop.

If your feet are rolling outward, that's supination. However, being "heavy footed" normally goes with overpronation and flat arches.

Anyway, someone needs to see and assess you in person. Based on your individual arch, pronation, distances, surfaces, etc., they should be able to narrow your most likely options down, and then you'll have up to maybe a half dozen models to try on. Pay attention to function first and foremost, and worry about things like brand and price at the very end. Also don't be surprised when you need different sizes in different models, and when most if not all aren't the same size you wear in normal shoes. It's good if you can bring along the shoes (and socks) you currently use.

And things like Niketown, Big 5, Sports Authority, Foot Locker, etc., aren't running specialty shops.

What kind of running shoe should I get? Neutral, supination, or overpronation?

Laura Mae

Here are some pictures of my foot (lol) I'm pretty sure I fall in the Supination category because I have such a high arch and when I run it does seem like my feet swing out, but I'd just like to get some feedback from some runners to check me.

Pictures:

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb83/lauramae88/Photo297.jpg

Yes, my heels are pretty red in one picture, that's from wearing a bad pair of heels all day, not from my new running shoes.

Which bring me to my question about this new purchase. They are Saucony's "Grid Stratos 2" for only $40. I'm a college student just getting into running for the first time and I want to make sure I don't cause myself an injury due to picking the wrong shoes, but I also don't want to go above my budget which is $50.00.
Here is a link to a conversation about my shoes, although this guy's foot is flatter than mine and he needs a stability shoe. I'm hoping in my case, these will be okay to run in, not just walk around in like him. They do feel amazing when I have them on even though I know it's a shoe only made for Big Five. I'm surprised that Big Five has this arrangement with other companies! Why wonder they are so affordable! Too bad this means that quality isn't as good, right?

Answer
I certainly understand the need to maintain a budget but cheap running shoes are like a cheap parachute, you are taking your chances (obviously with lesser consequences).

To purchase shoes go in to a running shoe store and say you want running shoes, period. They would have you run in a shoe to see how you run. Once they have an idea of what you need they should pull out several models and have you try them for comfort, have you put both pairs on and jog around the store to see which you like best. They will probably should be half a size to a full size larger than your street shoes. And thatâs it! If you go to a shoe store and they don't ask to see you run first thing to get an idea of your needs, find another store.

Do converse run big...?

Z

I've heard that they do. I found the perfect pair but they don't have my size! They're on sale & I've got a gift card for the store & it just really sucks that they don't have my size. I heard that converse are measured by men's sizing, so if I usually wear a size 9 should I just go ahead and buy a size 7?

Answer
They do run big because converse are guy shoes but they sell them for women too.Im a size 9 and a half but i fit into a 9. Its not too big or tight, but has enough room. So you should get an 8 and a half.

I run mostly on the road and on open grass hills and places like that. I run from about 4-9 miles on runs so i want the shoes to be comfortable. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Ditto on rhino72032's answer. Go to a good running shoe store - and not a general sports store. The really good ones will test you on a treadmill to see how you run, and make recommendations based on what they see.

If you would like to become more familiar with the issues of a good fit in a running shoe before going to the store, get a copy of the Runner's World shoe comparison issue, it comes out once a year. You can get a lot of the same info from their web site, as well (www.runnersworld.com).

It will cost more for good shoes, but they will last longer, they will feel better, you will run and race better, and you are less likely to get injured.

Hope this helps, too!

What company makes the best running shoes?

Answer
No one company makes the best shoes or it would drive all the others out of business. Go in to the running shoe store and say you want running shoes, period. They would check the shoes you are wearing to see the wear pattern which would indicate what type of shoe you need, a stabilization shoe, underpronation or overpronation, etc. Then they would have you run in a shoe to see how you run. Once they have an idea of what you need they should pull out several models and have you try them for comfort, have you put both pairs on and jog around the store to see which you like best. best rated woman running shoes?

Answer
All the big running shoe companies do women specific versions of their shoes.

There is not good/bad brand of running shoes!

The inportant thing is to get the right shoe for you, meaining you need to be fitted by experts. Go to your local specialist running shop as they will
watch you run,
diagnose the type of runner you are,
let you run in several pairs,
and provide a return policy if the pair you buy don't work for you

Some models of running shoes come in narrow/wide widths.

What are the best mid-priced running shoes for women?

Cookie777

I used to swear by Nike, but maybe something is better now? Skechers? Reebok? Other?

Answer
Go out to your local running store and try some shoes out. Generally, the cheaper a running shoe is, the "less shoe" you're going to get.

For Example, Racing flats are generally around $60, regular models are around $75-90, and motion-control and cushioneded shoes are $90-120.

As you go up that ladder, you are getting more cushion, motion-control and general 'technology.'

Trying to buy cheap shoes to run in will only cause you to buy improper ones for your needs and you'll end up hurting yourself, or running in uncomfortable shoes.

The better way to go about buying running shoes is to go to a running store, and talk with the clerk (they're generally very very knowledgeable) about what you need out of your shoe, and they will pick the correct one for you. It's worth the investment to shell out an extra $20 to keep your legs healthy.

I hope this helps, good luck finding the right shoes.

life time of a running shoe?

od

I run 3 miles, 5 times a week, with a pair of new balance running shoes

Answer
Generally, change your shoes AT MINIMUM every 500 miles--some people say every 300-500 miles. If you are running at a lower intensity (less hills, slower, etc), I'd say you can go with the 500 miles. However, if you suffer an injury (shin splints, ITBS, etc), change your shoes--that will probably solve your problem, after recovery.

SO if you run 15 miles a week, you should change your shoes every 33 weeks. I've been running for 15 years, and I just am getting through an injury from not changing my shoes in time.

I have flat feet but have a neutral gait. Does anyone have any running shoe reccomendations for this?

ERIC L

I am currently running on a pair of Mizuno Wave Creations and they seem to work ok. I'd like to find something better. A short run (3-4 miles) causes pain on the lateral aspect, near the 5th metatarsal. A longer run (6-9 miles) yields mild calcaneal pain during the first 3 miles, but then subsides. As far as I can tell, I don't overpronate or underpronate.

A year and a half ago, I experienced similar symptoms while training for a marathon, but the pain was intermittent. I used the same line of shoes. (reccommended from a local running store)

I've tried various inserts with no improvement. I haven't experienced any hip pain. I have experienced ITBS due to overtraining (left knee only). I suspect that my current foot pain may stem from footwear. I haven't been able to find a suitable shoe. Any suggestions?

Answer
I now only run with the Nike Air Max 360. It cushions your foot with air on the entire bottom of the foot, minimizing painful pressure points. Also, my boyfriend has flat feet, and now wears the arch insoles, that will help gradually build an arch.
These insoles are metal, and strap to your feet under your socks when you run. We run a lot, and they seem to really help. I think for optimal results, do both, the insoles and the shoes.

Where to buy running shoes?

What is the best place to buy running shoes? And what do I look for when buying shoes? Are there any good chain stores? Otherwise I live in the Twin Cities (Minnesota)

Answer
Under no circumstances should you try to buy running shoes at a regular sporting goods store. It will be well worth your time, effort, and money to go to an actual running store and get fitted for shoes. Take a pair of your regular sneakers with you so that they can examine your wear patterns. See the link below for running stores in Minnesota. Looks like there are several in Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Getting fitted properly for running shoes will drastically reduce your risk of injury.

Good luck!

I just have a few questions about running shoes.

1 Is it really worth blowing a hundred dollars for a pair of running shoes?(I a 14 year old with little cash to spend on such expensive shoes)For example, has anyone bought cheap shoes and ended up being injured because of the shoes?

2 How often should a runner replace his/her shoes?(I usually run about 4 miles five days a week)

3 What is the running shoe for the money?

Answer
I work at a specialty running store in California and im also a competitive runner. I have worked with running shoes for years and know that brands like asics, brooks, new balance, nike, misuno, adidas, sacony and a few others have great long distance running shoes. It all depends on what type of shoe you need (neutral, stability and motion control) and how you want it to feel. If you over pronate (your feet and/or ankle role inward) than you need a shoe with some stability (stability=grey material on the inner arch of the shoe or with mizuno is more radical wave like on the Inspire) to support your foot so it can run neutrally. A neutral shoe has white all around the base and is for people who supinate (roll out while toeing off) or for people who donât over pronate. Motion control is for people who over pronate like crazy or for rare conditions like surgery on the foot.

Each brand caries all three types of shoes; they just feel different for each brand.
Asics and Brooks are two brands that have a happy medium feel where most of the population will buy a shoe from them so itâs safe to by from them and if you donât like them; try New Balance.

Fit:
This is a list of what foot type usually works with each brand (this is not always right, but it is most of the time).
Adidas: high arch
Sacony: high arch
Nike: normal to high arch
Asics: normal to high arch
Brooks: normal to low arch
Mizunno: normal to low arch
New Balance: low arch

Price:
When you buy a running shoe the price should be about $85 and up for a new style. If you go to an all-a-round sports store, the shoe should cost $65 and up unless youâre buying an Asics 2110 for $45. The shoes around $85 dollars and up usually are lighter and last longer. A good place to buy shoes is the running center or www.runningcenters.com
(all online orders are 10% off)

Shoe life:
Depending on your weight and how you run, the shoe should last about 400-500 miles until you need a new pair. Running on worn-out shoes is one of the best ways to get injured. I have see shoes last about 900, but donât chance it.

I have a high arch and a couple shoes work for me.
I currently run in asics (DS trainers), nike (Vomero), New Balance (1061) with a DS trainer liner. I race in adidas (adizero). I still want a pair of the new brooks (Adrenalin) and I know they work for me and feel good.
I use different shoes for different workouts; thatâs why I have so many (I also work at a running store so get a BIG discount and some are free for testing^_^).

what is a good running shoe meant for runners and has ankle support?

BambinoRed

I currently run in high top basketball shoes because they're the only things that give me proper ankle support. I am wondering if there is some kind of ankle supporting running shoe? I need ankle support because I broke my ankle a few years back and without the support I cannot exercise as hard.

Answer
Basketball shoes provide lateral support. They protect your ankle by limiting any left to right motion. When running you really don't need that type of support. What you do need is a shoe that supports your foot (and therefore everything above it) based on how you run.

You need to get fitted at a specialty running store that can tell you what type of support you need (motion control, stability, or a neutral shoe). Once you know that you can pick out the proper shoe with the most cushioning, which will help protect your ankle from the stresses caused by running.

Then try to run on smooth, flat surfaces. Avoid trails, concrete sidewalks, and rough or crowned roads and take corners easy and you should be fine. You can wear a separate ankle sleeve which may help a tiny bit and you can also work on building up the muscles that support your ankle which will help a lot.

Running shoes for ankle support?

Liz

I love to run, but I haven't been able to since late July because I injured my ankle and it still hasn't healed.=( To make a long story short, I have been dealing with anorexia for 1+ year, and when I regained some of the weight I lost, I resumed running this past summer. I must have increased my duration and intensity too quickly because within two weeks, I began experiencing pain in my inner, left ankle. I ran on it about 4 or 5 times since, as I thought it had healed and was just stupid. I saw an orthopedist and had x-rays 6 weeks ago, but he couldn't see anything. I have a follow-up this Tuesday for x-rays and an MRI, if I still have the pain, which I do. I even feel pain at times when I am just sitting or lying down, and sometimes, I twirl my foot lightly or bend it up and down to relax the pain, and I can hear the bone kind of popping or cracking. I don't know what is wrong, but I am really worried because I feel like it is never going to heal and I will never run again.=( I am still underweight, and I exercise a lot on the elliptical and in other low-impact ways, so could that be contributing to it not healing?

Well, I was just wondering if any runners out there could please recommend some running shoes to me? I haven't bought new ones in years, and I think it is time. I know I can't run now, but I think it would still help my ankle for support anyway. Thanks a lot for listening and hopefully for some advice! Take care.=)

blister on feet from tennis shoes? how?

Q. yesterday i wore nike walking sneakers, they are always comfortable. I walked way more than usual around the city, like 45-50 blocks total. when I got home feet were very sore to stand on, and I had 2 sore "whitish" blisters on the bottom of my feet.

1. how did this happen if I was wearing tennis shoes?

2. how do I stop it from happening again?

3. how do I get rid of the blisters?

Answer
It could be possible that it is time for new tennis shoes. I get blisters from my running shoes when ever they are "worn" out even if my feet initially feel comfy in them. Also could be the pure fact that those shoes just dont agree with your feet for that long period of time, i.e. not good walking shoes. To stop it from happening again I suggest maybe some new shoes if you can afford or trying a different pair of shoes next time you take a long outing. To get rid of blisters is not a fast process because you have essentially gotten a severe sunburn on your foot. So i the best I can suggest is soaking your feet in nice warm epson salt, that make them feel better and to keep them protect while in other shoes put some neosporin and then a cushioning band aid or those blister covers work as well can be found at any drug store

can you give me some good brands of running/jogging shoes? thanks a lot!

Answer
for me, asics is by far the most comfortable shoe brand
the best thing to do is decide what type of she you need
for example: neutrtal, stability, motion control
if you go to a special running store, they will actually watch how you run and tell you what type of shoe you need
after you figure out what type of shoe, try on different brands to decide which shoe is most comfortable for you
it also depends if you need arch support or not, but you can get insoles for that

What are some good walking / jogging shoes ?

The Truth

My feet hurt really bad when I'm done walking everytime.. I wear a pair of old mid top air force ones with the bottom completely worn out...What are some very comfortable walking/ running shoes for men ?

Answer
Nike and Asics are definitely my faves.
If you go to your local running store/athletic store, most of the time (if the people are nice) they will watch you jog and check out your feet and figure out what type of shoe you need (extra support, high arches, etc.)
Best of luck!
