what is the difference between running shoes and volleyball shoes?

nastassja

Answer
Running shoes are designed **only** for moving "forward", but volleyball shoes are designed to move in all directions, with much better lateral tracking and support, and can help you change direction within spit of a second.

Volleyball shoes are much lighter, can provide extra protection to you toes. If after two three hours of playing you feel sore in your toes, you know you would need a pair of volleyball shoes.

To make them lighter in weight, most volleyball shoes are made specifically for indoor play. They might have open vent under the arc, the sole, and/or at some other spots (if you can find a pair of volleyball shoes at your local store, remove the padding and you can see through from the bottom). Walking outside would also collect dirt into the out sole and affect tracking.
Make sure you don't wear them outside of the gym.

Have fun playing volleyball.

Can I use running shoes to play volleyball?

sundays21

??

Answer
Yes, you can use running shoes to play volleyball, however also remember that shoes are designed for their specifics...ie running shoes made to support your foot while running etc. And since volleyball & running are completely different the shoes are made different. Volleyball shoes provide lateral support and so on and so forth...gearded toward what volleyball players need.

If you are just playing to play, sure. It's not biggie...but if you are going to play competitive I'd say try and get volleyball shoes. It'll provide you with more stability overall while playing volleyball.

Adidas, Nike, Asics, Kaepa, Mizuno...they all have volleyball shoes. However, I personally reccomend Mizuno. I've had Nike volleyball shoes before & Adidas....but I prefer Mizuno's now. Plus, Mizuno has all sorts of different shoes for you to pick from (ie Wave spike, etc.)

What is the best type of running shoe?

toolowbrow

I run on average 6 miles a day

Answer
Best type of running shoe is not related to any brand or make of the shoes. You should have your running style examined by someone who specializes in running shoes. (Not at Sports Authority or Modell's sporting goods) If you search for a Running store in your area and goto the people who only deal with running related products, they will ask you to get on a treadmill and ask you to walk and/or run for a little bit. They will see your running style and recommend a right fitting shoes. People tend to pronate as they run, meaning one of the of foot hits the ground first then followed by the other side, creating stress on your ankle and knee, since ever step your leg rotates. They would need stability protection shoes... if you are a neutral runner, then you'd get a different type of shoes. I would definitely search around your town for a running store and ask the expert for the right shoes for your running style.

Best athletic shoe?

Callie

My man has flat feet, kind of wide, and habitual corns.,... what would be the best tennis shoe for him?

He likes Nike's but I was thinking Adidas.

Answer
I have flat feet too (that are kind of wide when i step) and need to buy shoes with a low arch and with enough room around the front of the shoe. I tend to by Adidas because they usually have more low-arched shoes than Nike (from my experience). I've bought the clima-cool shoes and have been using them for years. They are really comfortable, but the ones I have are for running. The most important thing to consider, however, is to choose the right shoe no matter what the brand is.

For more information here's an article from WebMD about choosing shoes:
http://www.webmd.com/content/article/108/108999?src=rss_cbsnews

And another great website about choosing running shoes that I've used:

Equipment and training to make athletic shoes?

downlinere

How are athletic shoes made, what kind of equipment is needed, and where can you learn to make shoes?

Answer
I was a shoe designer and the ability to make shoes is a combination of craft and science

You need some very sophisticated equipment special sewing machines and the shoe made in leather or synthetics will each be different again

I learnt through a factory and had to learn every step which took over a year to do each step
There is the technology in the materials that make up the shoes
modern shoes have special molds for making the out soles, then you need eye let machines and a host of processes from cleaning to finishing

there are companies in China that will make a shoe for you if you design it
However you Can't walk into most companies and buy 1 metre of cloth sometimes you can only but rolls of 300metres at a time

Answer
Would need to know your particular needs to make a decision. Go to a running shoe store and say you want running shoes, period. They should have you run in a shoe to see how you run, which would indicate what type of shoe you need. Once they have an idea of what you need they should pull out several models and have you try them for comfort, have you put both pairs on and jog around the store or in the street to see which you like best. They should be half a size to a full size larger than your street shoes. If you go to a shoe store and they don't ask to see you run first thing to get an idea of your needs, find another store.
Good luck!

I'm moving to Vancouver from London (UK) in September of this year.?

Alan

I'm planning to live around Mount Pleasant and I was after some general advice about the city. I've been there before but only for a couple of days. I spent a year studying in Ottawa in 2007.

How much do you reckon food and travel etc will cost me a month? (I should be in walking distance of my work)
Good places to go? Good places to avoid? (I'm 24)
is it worth investing in a bike?
Am i going to need as many cold weather clothes as I did in Ottawa?
Anything else I haven't mentioned that you think i ought to know!
Cheers!

Answer
If you can walk to work, that won't cost a thing except shoe leather. Bus fare for within one zone is $2.50 for a single fare, and a monthly pass is $81. You won't need anywhere near as much winter clothing as you did in Ottawa. Main thing in a Vancouver winter is staying dry. If you do that, you're probably warm enough too. Most people manage most of the winter with waterproof footwear and a medium weight rainproof jacket. I haven't been in a London winter but for gardeners, the Vancouver climate is reckoned to be much closer to that of Britain than that of the rest of Canada. Clothing you can layer is very useful especially in spring and fall when it can go between cool and drizzly to warm and sunny several times a day. I keep a few items of clothing in my closet for the occasional times it snows or gets really cold( below zero) and some winters I never even look at them.

Many people use their bikes all year round in Vancouver.

Food cost is a little hard to judge because it depends so much on how you manage it. For a single person to eat reasonably well at home, I'd figure on around $50 a week. Vancouver is filled with reasonably priced restaurants of all kinds so eating out doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg.

There's really no part of Vancouver I wouldn't go in daytime, even as an unaccompanied woman. There are parts (of the Downtown East Side particularly) that I would avoid after dark, but then every city in the world has some of those. I wouldn't worry about the personal safety side of things, but I think bike theft is pretty common.

As for where to go, I hardly know where to start. Vancouver has a lot of activities available, indoors and out. One of the nicest things about it is that when the weather turns fine, even for a day, people get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Summers are beautiful, warm and generally dry, but winter can be a bit of a trial. It can start turning grey and damp in September and stay that way till about now. But it doesn't usually rain hard enough to stop people from doing things. You can find people playing tennis in December.

Honeymoon in Vancouver/Whistler BC Canada..?

ron1971920

early february 2011....besides skiing/snowboarding what else to do, besides lots of sexy time. Experiences and suggestions of places and things to do/see.

Answer
Up in Whistler besides the skiing/snowboarding, you could also snow shoe or ice skate, which are both quite fun activities. Besides doing that, Whistler also has a village you can walk around. Inside the village there are stores like, Lululemon,Billabong, Northface, etc. In the Whistler village there is also a movie theater, that plays new releases. The have a variety of restaurants, Spaghetti Factory, Grills, Bars, etc.
I was up in Whistler for my birthday last year, and I found it to be quite enjoyable. There are sometimes some people performing all around the village. A shop you should visit in Whistler is definitely a store called Cows. I adore it. It's an ice cream parlour along with a store, It's adorable with some really cute finds and souviners.

I've been living in Vancouver all my life, and it's beautiful. In Vancouver it's beautiful. In Febuary it may be a little chilly, so remember to wear a sweater or a jacket. Places that you should visit are Granville Island, Stanley Park, Downtown. Aquarium,Capilano Suspension Bridge, Canada Place etc.
If you want to experience some culture, head down to Chinatown. There's a variety of Chinese shops, restaurants, and other things. But I must warn you, it can get a little scary down there because the homeless/addicts do tend to wander around there.
Downtown is a must visit! With many shops, restaurants, etc. Also downtown you may get to see the Olympic torches from the 2010 games. Robson street is the main shopping street of downtown.
Stanley Park is also a MUST. Vancouver is best known for Stanley Park. Stanley Park's attractions include, Totem Poles, the Vancouver Aquarium, Hanging Gardens,Prospect Point, etc. Also inside Stanley Park there are two beaches, Second and Third Beach.

I hope this helped, and I hope you have fun in Vancouver in your furute visit :)

Plantar Fasciitis?

Chitowngal

I'm not sure if I have it. All I know is I have tenderness in my left heel. Worse in the morning. I don't feel like a knife is sticking into my foot. I do my aerobics just fine... then an hour or two later, my foot is more tender. It is just slightly more bloated than my other foot (swelling maybe)?

Question... do you think I have Plantar Fasciitis?

If so, what do you recommend I do to treat it?

Not exercising is not an option. I just changed my shoes and have been doing more lifting and less cardio (jumping etc). Any advice on this?

What will happen if I continue exercising as usual? I am assuming the problem was my shoes and I have changed them. I have heard that it should heal on its own within a year. Am I good to go with exercise then? I can tolerate the discomfort afterwards... as long as I know I'm not doing any permanent damage.

Answer
Be careful... Not taking care of this can lead to a long painful recovery later on See the doc Do the proper exercises and observe the restrictions or "not exercising not being an option" may suddenly no longer be an option.

read on below:

d: Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain for which professional care is sought. A variety of terms have been used to describe it including jogger's heel, tennis heel, Policeman's heel, and an outdated term, gonorrheal heel reflecting the old thought that it was somehow related to that sexually transmitted disease.

Pathophysiology: The plantar fascia originates on the medial tubercle of the calcaneus and fans out over the bottom of the foot to insert onto the proximal phalanges and the flexor tendon sheaths. It forms the longitudinal arch of the foot and functions as a shock-absorber as well an arch support. The term fasciitis may be somewhat of a misnomer since the disease is actually a degenerative process with or without inflammatory changes, which may include fibroblastic proliferation. This has been proven from biopsies of fascia from people undergoing surgery for plantar fascia release. It is commonly believed to be caused by repetitive microtrauma to the fascia.

Frequency:

* In the US: Plantar fasciitis accounts for about 10% of runner-related injuries and 11-15% of all foot symptoms requiring professional care. It is thought to occur in 10% of the general population as well. It may present bilaterally in a third of cases.

Mortality/Morbidity: Plantar fascitis probably may lead to significant morbidity placing strict activity limitations on the patient. In addition, due to the pain in the foot leading to changes in patterns of bearing weight, associated additional injury to the hip and knee joints may also occur.

Race: Race and ethnicity play no role in the incidence of plantar fasciitis.

Sex: The condition occurs equally in both sexes in young people. Some studies show a peak incidence may occur in women aged 40-60 years.

Age: The condition can occur at any age. As mentioned, a peak incidence may occur in women aged 40-60 years.

History:

* The patient reports inferior heel pain with the first few steps taken in the morning or after other long periods of nonweightbearing.

* A limp may be present, and patients may prefer to walk on their toes.

* Initially, the pain decreases with ambulation but then increases throughout the day as activity increases. Pain is worsened by walking barefoot on hard surfaces or by walking up stairs.

* Associated paresthesias, nocturnal pain, or systemic symptoms should raise suspicion of other causes of heel pain (ie, neoplastic, infectious, neurologic causes).

* Patients may report that before the onset of pain, they had increased the amount or intensity of activity including, but not limited to, running or walking. They may have also started exercising on a different type of surface, or they may have recently changed footwear.

Physical:

* The patient may have tenderness upon palpation of the anteromedial aspect of the heel.

* Ankle dorsiflexion may be limited due to tightness of the Achilles tendon.

* Pain may be exacerbated by passive dorsiflexion of the toes or by having the patient stand on his or her toes.

Causes:

* The cause of plantar fasciitis is unclear and may be multifactorial. Because of the high incidence in runners, it is best postulated to be caused by repetitive microtrauma. Possible risk factors include obesity, occupations requiring prolonged standing, heel spurs, pes planus (excessive pronation of the foot), and reduced dorsiflexion of the ankle.

Best walking shoes for plantar fasciitis?

AnnabellAc

I was just diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. My pain is located on the side of my right foot (where that bump is). It sometimes causes aching through my arch as well, but the worst of the pain is on the side of my foot.

I am a walker (3-5 miles a day). My doctor suggested that I get top of the line walking shoes. Good shoes are key. He mentioned New Balance and Saucauny. But said that it really depends on what my foot finds relief from. So, my question is this.......there are HUNDREDS of different shoes out there. So, to all people who also suffer from side-of-foot plantar fasciitis, what are the best walking shoes you have found?

....just trying to find a starting point. Thanks!
@ Douglas: You're an idiot. Anyone with a brain knows that your foot needs good support. And when the muscles/tendons are damaged, you need really good support even more. Why? Simple: to help take the stress and weight off of your foot so that your foot can begin to heal itself. Surgery is another option if things get worse, but good shoes are ESSENTIAL. I'm a dancer and can vouch for this. You are a complete idiot if you honestly think it doesn't matter.

If you think my doctor is such a hack - I find it kind of interesting that he is asking me to buy a pair of shoes over spending thousands of dollars (which would go to him) for surgery. I'm pretty sure he knows what he's talking about.

Don't answer questions if you have no idea what you are talking about.

Answer
Hi there,

Since you have been "officially" diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis then you already know that this condition is hard to get rid of, but it's not impossible.
What I find odd is the location of your pain, usually the pain is located in the heel/arch area, but yours is on the side of the foot so I wonder if it's really PF.

In your specific case I would go in a slightly different direction - Concentrate on recovering from your foot pain (Of course the correct shoes and inserts are part of that).

In order to help you in the best way possible please answer these short questions:

1) Do you have any pain in your heel?
2) Do you have high arches or flat feet?
3) What kind of shoes you usually wear?
4) Do you have pain especially after rest or after a night sleep?
5) Is there any redness or swelling visible?

Here are things you should do to improve you condition.

1) Ice your heel and arch at least 4 times a day - easiest method is to sit down and roll a frozen bottle with your foot, do this 20 minutes for each foot.
2) Stretch! - stretch your legs and feet, especially before getting out of bed in the morning or after sitting for more that 15 minutes
3) Massage your heel and arch, it may be painful in the beginning but it will help with circulation and allow the body to heal itself
4) Avoid walking whenever possible, this is a "biggie" try to rest your feet by sitting down a lot,
5) Be patient and consistent - It is important to be persistent with these activities and it takes time to recover.

Now to answer your question directly:

1) I recommend that you have custom made orthotics - that are "tailored" to your specific foot type, these are the best option really, I wouldn't buy "off the shelf" products in your case.
2) Your shoes should be wide and comfortable, and believe it or not, having a 1 or 2 inch heels can also relieve some of the pain because it stretches the Plantar Fascia.
The brand is not really important as long as it's well made (New balance or other known brands are excellent).

I really hope this helps, don't hesitate to contact me if you need further advise - My email is in my profile.

Take care and good luck!

Do you know any athletes with type 2 diabetes?

straightiv

I don't think I have ever met an athletic person with type 2 diabetes. I'm not talking about people who play horse shoes, bowl or shoot archery. I'm talking about runners, swimmers, soccer players, basketball players and those who really get their heart rate going.

Answer
It can happen but is not likely because most type 2 diabetics are over weight and fitness and being overweight just dont go together. I have type 1 diabetes so I know quite a bit about this. I have never heard of one but it can happen

5.0 out of 5 stars Great socks for diabetics

By Greg Wax (Lester Prairie, MN United States)

This review is from: Nike Men's Crew Cut Moisture Management Socks 3 pack (Apparel)
My feet sweat a lot from type II diabetes. Regular cotton socks get soaked and my feet feel like they have been in water all day and hurt very bad.

Regular cotton socks quickly loose their cushion and the netting feels like cheese-cloth cutting into my feet.

My wife and I went to a sporting goods store and bought over $100.00 of different types of athletic socks to try them all.

These socks wick the water away and I can walk a lot and stay on my feet longer, which helps the effects of diabetes.

Ballet flats, sneakers, tennis shoes, clogs, and what aren't?

Answer
Whats in:
-shoe boots
-platforms
-peep toes
-interresting and origanal shoes
-heels generally
-ballet pumps are an old classic and have to be warn well and are better for the preppy types but in terms of vogue fashion your better of with a pair of bright green or purple or white or black platform peep toe heels or some brown or black shoe boots with some light denim.
-if your into flats your better of with some lacoste or fred perry (although adidas do some) plimpsol type sneakers
-classic sneakers like adidas or other type things are always around
-clashing colours are in e.g flouro pink knee socks with bright green platforns
-socks and heels
-purple shoes
-lace heels

whats not:
-flat shoes are fading away
-clogs and crocs are a no go just burn them and run
-boots arent in to much just sawp for your shoe boots instead
- UGG BOOTS only for very very very very cold days and if your sloany there not in just sloan which is fine if your sloan but then to all of a sudden wear them is strange

hope this helps at least a bit!

Do you wear shoes at home?

comfort co

Do you wear shoes or slippers at home.Or do you go bare foot or walk around in socks.Do you have a shoes off at the door house rule just for your family or does everyone have to remove their shoes in your house.Perhaps you are flexible and let people choose for themselves. If you have a shoes off rule,do you provide slippers for guests to wear or do they bring their own.It is increasingly popular nowadays to have a shoes off rule and also more socially acceptable. Why is that?Vogue magazine said that slippers were now the number one household accessory. Why has there been a sudden seachange to wearing slippers and also having shoes off house rules. Is there a class dimension to this area.In a very affluent part of the southeast of England the Guardian newspaper reported that it was the trend for mothers to wear their pyjamas and slippers in the car on the school run.But ultimately is it not just about personal choice to have a shoes off rule in the house.

Answer
I am always barefoot, indoors or outdoors. Haven't worn footwear of any kind for eleven years, and never regretted it.

But I don't require people to take off their shoes when they visit. I don't really like any shoe or footwear rules; it should be clear to anyone who reads these barefoot questions that there are people who're just as uncomfortable taking their shoes off as I would be wearing them. Why would I do that to them? A house is meant to be lived in, and my cats don't even wipe their feet when they come in. I have a sturdy carpet and a good vacuum cleaner, if I ever moved some place that had a fluffy white carpet it'd be the first thing to go! Only when someone would have very muddy shoes, I'd ask them to do something about it, but whether they take their shoes off or use the outdoor hose is up to them.

How do you get irristable legs?

Q. it's time for shorts and bikinis, so the legs need to look good. haha

any suggestions?

Answer
Irresistable legs are a result of cardio such as jogging and stair climbers, exfoliating body wash and shaving those babies daily, sunscreen protection to prevent brown spots on them, using a good running shoe so no varicose veins from the cardio and a light golden tan achieved safely from jogging or running outside while using a mild sunscreen like spf 15. now that would be sexy.

edit: heels give the illusion of longer more toned legs as well!!

What's a good shoe for standing all day?

Vinz

I work at a grocery store, and it involves standing all day. I'm currently wearing asics onitsuka tiger running shoes, and they're not cutting it. The veins on the inside of my feet are starting to bulge, and I'm also getting varicose veins. I need something new.

Answer
New Balance, go to a footlocker, champs. You must talk to someone though. The shoes have a specific number for different tasks. Some are very soft and flexible, others have soft sould but sturdy sides, etc.

What are good nike running shoes....4 men?

sandra g

Answer
Nike Shox are wonderful. They give you a good grip on the ground...men & women. I am a teenager, but i have a very large foot. My brother also likes them. They last really long too! Once you break them in, the give you a bounce so it's a little easier to run. Even when they are not broken in they are very comfy & are really great for running!

How to begin jogging?

Waltzing M

I was athletic when I was younger (I am < 30). I was a beanpole growing up, which enabled me to be in complete denial about how much weight I gained - no way was I fat; that could not happen to me :) Well, I have finally accepted that I am. I am a female, 5'9", and weigh 170ish, 180.

With that said... After the birth of my daughter, I attempted to resume my quest to jog 3 miles straight. Right away, from the very first jog, I experienced shin splints, a pain I had previously never before felt. I ran through them because I did not want to "quit".

I would stretch before and after every run. I would walk a little before each jog ( < .10 mile) and after ( > .5 mile). After every jog my shins were red and stinging - a rash-like condition (I would wear capri shorts so it wasn't from the clothes). I would ice my shins to no avail.

This continued a little over a month. The last time I jogged, I had to quit. The pain was so intense, I could barely walk back, and I had tears in my eyes for the next few hours. I was literally writhing in pain - and I have a decent pain threshold.

That was the last time I jogged. I had even bought a new pair of sneakers after the first week thinking that might help. I was running outside ( in the past I was a treadmill runner) on either a dirt track or asphalt. I would really like to try to develop a jogging schedule, but I am sincerely worried about my shins.

Do I need to lose weight first, before I try to jog again? Do I need to take serious baby steps and start with, like, .10 mile increments? Am I wrong think that I heard that ground is easier on the body than the treadmills? What can I do? Seriously, it felt like my tibias were broken. Any sincere advice is appreciated.

Answer
1) Pain is your body's way saying something is wrong. Don't ignore it.
2) Don't do static stretching before a run, only after you are sufficiently warmed up. You can do dynamic stretching before hand but it isn't really necessary for your purposes. Definitely stretch your calves afterwards.
3) In the future when buying shoes, go in to a running shoe store and say you want running shoes, period. Good idea to go in with the type of socks you usually wear and your running shoes. They would check your shoes to see the wear pattern which would indicate what type of shoe you need, a stabilization shoe, underpronation or overpronation, etc. Then they would have you run in a shoe to see how you run. Once they have an idea of what you need they should pull out several models and have you try them for comfort, have you put both pairs on and jog around the store to see which you like best. They will probably half a size to a full size larger than your street shoes. And thatâs it! If you go to a shoe store and they don't ask to see you run first thing to get an idea of your needs, find another store.
4) No, you don't need to lose weight to run.
5) Yes, take the baby steps. I would suggest going out for a half hour and starting with running a minute and walking a minute. Then running two and walking one and one from there.
Good luck!

Running tips for this summer?

Live2Ride

This summer, me and my two best friends plan to get in shape and start running together. None of us are very athletic (we've got a walker, a horseback rider, and a dancer, haha) and we haven't really got much experience with the best way to get into a running routine.

Any kind of tips will be helpful, from what to eat for breakfast to what to wear to how far to run. Oh, and what are the best style of running shoes? Thanks, guys!

Answer
Welcome to running, great that you are doing it!

To get started I would run for a half hour, taking walking breaks when needed. To stay together, as you all may not be in the same condition, you might want to pre-plan this, say run 3 minutes then walk one, or follow the lead of the person who is in the least shape.

A bagel or toast with jelly and/or peanut butter and juice is is fine and chocolate milk is good afterwards (it has the right mix of carbohydrates and protein). Where loose comfortable clothing, a t-shirt and shorts, for example, or if it is colder, sweat clothes.

Shoes protect you from getting injured and are your most important piece of equipment. They are your only real financial investment in running and can go from $75 to $100. You go in to a running shoe store and say you want running shoes, period. Good idea to go in with the type of socks you would wear. They may check your shoes to see the wear pattern which would indicate what type of shoe you need, a stabilization shoe, underpronation or overpronation, etc. Then they would give you a running shoe and have you run to see how you run and what yu need.

What is the best and newest nike running shoe out there for men? like free runs?

Bob

Let's just put it this way: I do not want to buy a nike running shoe that came out in 2012.

Answer
That certainly should not be the way you choose your footwear. The flashiest shoes might not fit you correctly and you will only succeed in injuring yourself somewhere along the season. In addition Nike shoes generally are not regarded as a good performance shoe company for running. I suggest Asics, Brooks, or Oasis.

Is Obama a shoe-in for 2012?

Minkus

I think so. Look at the weak competition!

John McCain already lost to Obama and will be too old to run again.

Sarah Palin is the Republican frontrunner. How sad. No one even likes her anymore because she proved herself to be too unintelligent for the position in her interview with Katie Couric. She is also a complete loon, completely off her rockers!

Bobby Jindal is a minority which helps but he would be outwitted by Obama in the debates. To me, Jindal is the GOP's best hope because of his minority status.

Mitt Romney is the second-best hope that the GOP has because of his style, looks and well-spokenness. He could get a lot of female voters to vote for him. What hurts him more than anything is his newfound pro-life position on abortion, which will scare off moderates and lots of women. The last thing we need is another Christian fundie dictating social policy!

Mike Huckabee has a good personality and has a good sense of humor (major plus there) but this is the 21st Century and no one wants an uber-religious Christian conservative calling the shots in the White House.

Rudy Giuliani hasnât been active in politics since Bloomberg took over as NYC mayor. Also, 9/11 was a long time ago.

Ron Paulâs positions are way too extreme to win a Republican nomination and it would make no sense for him to run as a meaningless third party candidate, so heâs out of the running.

George P. Bush gets points because he is Mexican and can get that all-important Hispanic vote. He loses points because he shares the same last name as the worst president of all time, George W. Bush.

Jeb Bush lacks the Hispanic support that the younger, half-Hispanic George P. Bush has. He also did a lousy job as Florida's governor. Incompetence must run in the Bush family.

Michael Steele counterbalances Obamaâs blackness, but the black community recognizes that he is nothing more than an Uncle Tom a la Alan Keyes.

Newt Gingrich needs to get it through his head that the 90âs were a long time ago. He was a laughing stock then and he would be an even bigger laughing stock in 2012! Give it up already, your five minutes are up!

Tom Tancredo appeals to the xenophobe Lou Dobbs-watching anti-Mexican faction, not to mainstream Americans. The open-minded Obamanation would crush him.

Rush Limbaughâ¦I wonât even go there! Everybody hates him now!

The rest of the GOP...old, washed-up, bitter, white men who bankrupted this country with their crooked crony capitalism. Obama will turn this country around and then the Republican Party will be dead...good riddance!

Answer
the republicans you mentioned have some really bad things that you haven't mentioned so none of them have any chance. Yes, he is a shoe. We are going to start doing really well. I already see progress where I live cause the liberals are really doing well. They are functioning & feel freer now that the situation with the war is being handled by adults. We are going to start seeing the stimulus goin ot effect which is going to make a huge difference. Workers start getting that $15 extra in there check which people don't seem to understand but it changes the way people look at things. They feel better with the money & it makes a dffierence.

cheap but good running track shoes for a 16 year old girl.?

What are a good brand of running shoes for a 16 y/o girl?

eat.sleep.

I kind of want some that are all flashy and bright (I run at night a lot too.) I would use the shoes to run and probably to play volleyball in.

My parents want to spend anywhere from $30 to $70.
Thanks!

Answer
You aren't going to get a good pair of running shoes that cheap. You will need to look at $100+. Sorry but good shoes cost money. And you only use running shoes for running. You don't use them for other things. It wears them out much quicker which means spending more money to replace them more often. And when you use them for other exercises you wear out different ares of the shoe. Like in volleyball you will be wearing out the sides of the shoe and it will give you less stability when you run which means you will be more injury prone.
Buy different volleyball shoes.

Your parents have to understand you spend the same on shoes regardless. If you buy a $50 pair of shoes they will last around 200 miles. Where as a $100 pair of shoes will last 500 miles. It's better to spend the money upfront and get a good shoe with good injury prevention qualities. I've bought a cheap $50 pair of shoes and in normal training they were worn completely out in 3 weeks. What a waste.

I personally love Asics, their shoes are great.
My recommendation is to go to a good running store (NOT sporting goods store a running store) and have them fit you for a proper pair of shoes. They will put you on a treadmill and look at your gait and help you pick the right shoe with the right stability and support.

What are the best walking/running shoes for heel pain?

feeddaneed

Have really bad heel pain, but want to get walking/running again.

Answer
I have been running for 8 years now. Though I am biased towards Nike as a brand, I would recommend you to go to a running-specific store, like Fleet Feet in Carrboro, NC. They can help you find the right shoe because people buy shoes that aren't necessarily right for their feet, but more comfortable or fashionable. But after you get the correct shoes or even if you haven't, I would go to any major athletics store and ask the sales associates because they are getting paid to know the products they are selling. But make sure you state the use/reason for buying the shoes. Good luck!!!

Heel pain everytime i walk?

Q. everytime i walk , my feet hurts in the sole or the heel. i think it has to do with my leather boots or heel. but what can i do to stop the constant pain in my heel? If i press my heel, it hurts badly! its been about 4 years now. Anyone have any suggestion?

Answer
Hello,

From your description it is difficult to determine the exact cause of your pain, but it sounds like "Plantar Fasciitis"

In order to provide you with the best possible assistance and diagnosis, please answer these short questions.

1) Is it extra painful in the first steps in the morning?
2) Does the pain go away after rest?
3) Does it also hurt when you are not standing/walking?
4) Do you have high or low arches?
5) What kind of shoes you usually wear (day to day)?
6) Where exactly is the pain located in your heel?
7) Is it painful in both feet?

Here are some suggestions for things you can do right now.

* Ice your heel/arch at least 4 times a day - You can roll a frozen bottle on the floor with your foot.

* Buy off the shelf gel inserts that you can wear in your shoes.

* Stretch your legs and feet before activity or before getting out of bed in the morning.

* Avoid wearing "cheap" shoes like flip flops - they provide no support for your arches.

Again, if you can answer my questions above I will be able to help you further.

You can write to me directly if you prefer, my email is in my profile.

Good luck and feel better!

I want to know what COLOR/SHADE of jeans look best with these. Can you show me a pic.

Answer
I suggest you don't wear colored jeans... how about simple jeans? Not washed, not light.
I would go for dark SKINNY / STRAIGHT jeans, no flare!!!!!

Also, I think athletic shoes look awesome/better with capris. Like dark, skinny, tight jeans & rolled them up a little.

Answer
All runners who compete need a closing kick. So, learning the proper technique to sprinting 100m with standing starts is very helpful.

A better 100m run â form and technique will get you there. - ptfa.geo answer:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100702191734AAczh6q

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

After that, distances will shape your mindset on improving your speed. You have to find suitable techniques, to your style of running to achieve faster running times.

Running Technique Keys:

Faster Running in General:
Running faster requires - either, a higher out put of leg rotation or running on your toes or both. Pumping your elbows to the back harder and faster is the key to getting a higher leg rotation. However, XC runners should stay away from being too high on their toes - risk of twisting an ankle is too great.

A racing shoe that properly fits your foot and used for race purpose only, will enhance your speed. Placing a thin insole in your racing shoe makes your racing shoe feel very comfortable for running in without soaks. Replace the insoles when they begin to show signs of wear or when they are flat in your impact area. They can be bought in some grocery stores.

Faster 100m -
requires 100% application of arms and legs at a maximum output rate.

Faster 200m (curve) -
requires special lean techniques for running the curve at top speed. The straight lean for wide curves and the "T" Torque for tight curves are the dormant lean styles. Application of the 100m running technique is used for the straight.

Faster 400m -
requires strategy, stamina, cursing power and a burst of closing kick energy. Having enough energy to close strong is the key.

Faster Speed For Races Greater than 400m -
requires strategy, higher leg rotation endurance, cursing power, body ventilation and relaxation skills, an on-and-off valve for generating power with your arms and, a final burst of closing kick energy. Having enough energy to close strong is the key. (Your technique is knowing when to use these essentials.)

Faster Hurdles:

Requirement:
One needs to have an ability to go air born in a balanced manner and then return to earth by hitting the ground running.

The secrete to hurdlers' speed is in; the placement of their starting blocks, the rhythm in their running between hurdles, the use of their arms, the placement of their lead leg after clearing the hurdle and, the methods needed to close out the last four hurdles.

The hurdle heights for high schools are:
American Girls - 30 inches and 33 inches
American Boys - 36 inches and 39 inches

The hurdle heights for college and open divisions are:
American Women - 30 inches and 33 inches
American Men - 36 inches and 42 inches

Faster Race Walking:

Requires:
Sustained pressure on the hip joints. One must have an ability to keep one foot on the ground at all times while walking forward after locking the knee joint. Power swings with the elbow in conjunction with accentuated hip swivel provides the power behind speed walking.

Sandals, skate shoes or Docs?

dawhitfiel

I've been dealing with a nagging knee injury for over a couple of months. On a daily basis should I be wearing sandals, skate shoes or Dr. Martins to work? Those are the only real options, though I may get some running shoes soon. My current cross trainers hurt my feet if I walk very far in them. I have some LeBron's but I don't think they go very well with the work clothing.

Answer
I have Juvenile Arthritis and my mom was always telling me to get a decent pair of leather shoes, because I'm always wearing Vans, and Converse. I finally got a pair of Doc's today, and I loooovvvvveeeee them!!!!! I also have knee problemos and these boots feel so sturdy!! And they are quite the stylish boot also.....Anyhoo,apparently it takes ages to break them in,the people in the shop told us between 6 weeks and 6 months!! But that's if you havn't worn Doc's before.
I'd advise you to go with the Doc's,because they have good, strong arch supports, and this will help with the knee too. As for skate shoes,I have them too,and there is not much of an arch support there.....so DOC'S!!!!!!

Pain in knee area when running?

Destiny Ja

I really don't stretch before I work out. For the past 3-4 months I have been going to the gym 5-6 times a week and running for 1 hour straight. For the past month or two now I have stopped my gym membership because I started getting pain in my knee area when I would run or walk for a long amount of time. I am 18. When I used to crack my knuckles a lot and when it would be cold outside I would feel like arthritis kind of thing on my knuckles that was painful but like discomforting painful. And that's how my knee area feels. At night it would hurt the most when I lay down and rest it. It like throbs..and it also throbs on my lower leg area by my ankle on the backside of my leg, but I know the pain is coming from my knee. Any advice? Has anyone had anything kind of like this?

Answer
First of all, the type of shoes you are running in can make a huge difference. There could be a number of different issues going on with your knee. Two that immediately come to mind are either an issue with your illiotibial band which runs along the outside of the knee, or your patella/knee cap.

Especially when running, it is very important to stretch before but more importantly, AFTER you run. Having the chain reaction from your knee that is causing calf and ankle pain could easily stem from the knee injury. I wish I could give you an exact diagnosis, but I am not a doctor.

My suggestion though is rest. Generally immediately after an injury or overuse injury, ice is good. Since it has been awhile, I would suggest ice and heat and Aleve. Remember that when you run, two to three times your body weight is coming down with impact, so it is very easy to develop a problem. If it persists, just take a visit to the doctor, but make sure you note what you have done in attempt to remedy teh problem. Good luck!

New runner, NO experience...Is training for a 1/2 Marathon unrealistic?

Jeannie Ha

I've been thinking of signing up for the San Francisco Marathon (half) taking place on July 31, 2011.

The thing is, I am NOT a runner, kind of suck at running because my breathing always seems to suffer, and I probably haven't run more than 200 meters at once in my life.
So my question is, with consistent gradual training over the next 7 months, is it realistic for me to expect to be able to run a 1/2 marathon by then? It sounds like it should be, I just get nervous that I may not have the endurance... If I train PROPERLY, what is the likelihood of me still sucking at running by then?

Answer
Oh, you can *totally* do it in 7 months! Since you're new to running, I would focus mainly on developing the endurance to finish the entire race, rather than setting a specific time goal. Some people use a walk-run strategy for their first long race, and others prefer to train to run the entire distance. Both are perfectly fine options. (Incidentally, are you thinking of running the first half or the second half? I do a lot of racing in the SF area & I'm thinking of running the 1st half across because you get to run across the Golden Gate Bridge - maybe I'll see you there!)

First, be sure you've got a quality pair of fitted running shoes. Wearing improperly fitted shoes is one of the leading causes of injuries, especially for new runners, so be sure to seek out a shop in your area that focuses on runners and running (preferably not a big chain sporting goods store) and ask for a shoe fitting. They should measure your foot in several different directions and also watch you walk and run both barefoot and in shoes. Based on what they see, they can recommend a few different pairs that might work. Take each of them for a jog around the store to help you decide which are most comfortable. (If you're in the city, I can definitely recommend See Jane Run in Noe Valley or Fleet Feet in the Marina - I've had fittings & bought shoes from both places and they're great. I think there's also a See Jane Run in Oakland. On the peninsula, I really like Roadrunner Sports in Menlo Park, and there's a Fleet Feet there too.)

There are a ton of half marathon training programs out there that you can use - as was mentioned above, Runner's World has several good ones in addition to the SmartCoach application. I really like Hal Higdon's half marathon programs too - they're straightforward and practical, but also effective. It's best to save those for when you're 10-12 weeks away from the Half Marathon, though, and in the mean time work on developing your endurance and form.

In terms of how to get started, I would definitely recommend signing up for a 5K that's ~3 months away to give you a short-term goal & keep you motivated to stick to your training schedule. It will also give you a chance to see what racing is all about & what it's like. C25K is great program for new runners - http://www.c25k.com/ - and Coach Jenny Hadfield at Runner's World has some great tips as well -

http://askcoachjenny.runnersworld.com/2010/11/newie-runner-learning-to-run-a-faster-5k.html

http://www.jennyhadfield.com/writing-NewRunnerTips.html

Some good options in the SF area for your first race could be the Chinese New Year Run on Feb 13, the Strawberry Hill 5K on Feb 20, or the St. Patrick's Day 5K on Mar 13. (I really like the Kaiser Permanente 5K through Golden Gate Park as well, but it's Feb 6, so you may want a little more time than that to get ready to race.)

Once you've raced your first 5K, set your sights on a 10K sometime in May (www.active.com is a great way to search for races). Again, there are tons of great training programs out there you can google, and SmartCoach as well. Once you've successfully raced a 10K, you'll be well on your way to being prepared for the SF Half!

Congratulations on your new running career & best of luck! :)

Barry Bonds lied about using steroids. On July 18th 1989, in front of his three kids, Donnie Moore shot his wi?

Barry Bonds lied about using steroids. On July 18th 1989, in front of his three kids, Donnie Moore shot his wife Tonya in the neck, abdomen and chest. He then turned the gun on himself, putting a bullet in his head. Which do you find to be more morally reprehensible?

Answer
I understand the contrast that your making between a coward with a gun ruining lives and a ball player just trying too compete against others engaging in the same activity. and the truth of the matter is that a majority of pro athletes have and will engage in performance enhancing substance use in the pursuit of excellence. whether its a football player injected with cortisone or a baseball player asked too numb up his pitching arm w/an injection, they do what it takes too compete and win. the issue of steroids is not a moral issue, its a competition issue when winning and success is all that matters too the fans and organization. The sports fans and general public do not see the big picture and that is their are a large number of pro baseball players on " juice". If you were in bonds shoes? he was expected too lead and take this team too a championship. a pro athlete such as bonds knows his competition and unfortunately that means competing against guys on performance enhancing substances. unfortunately bonds is high profile and his numbers put him under tough scrutiny just as mark mcguire was etc.... what folks dont realize is that there are hundreds of guys in MLB on juice, but the fans and media focus on those that are winning games pitching or hitting home runs. they are overlooking the 2nd string guys on juice that were told they need a year too 2 too before seeing playing time and these same guys cut that time in half with a syringe of juice. my point is this, bonds would not have used roids if the rest of the league did not! why? because hes only competing within the framework and standard set by the rest of the leagues players and unfortunately juice is a common thread too get ahead! bonds and a lot of pro athletes only use juice because too not use juice simply leaves you at a disadvantage when playing against those ( unnoticed players) that have for years. its unfortunate that pro pitchers and home run hitters that put up numbers are the only ones that the league seems too go after as the sudden increase in numbers draw immediate suspicion. this is insane as their are more players on juice ridin the pine than those hitting 50 plus home runs or winning 20 games on the mound.... go figure! so the leagues suspicion is raised when a guy in his 40s hits over 70 home runs or wins 20 games? its hypocrisy as they ignore the other 99 percent of the players that are just as loaded on juice. but its much easier for the league too pin their white glove treatment on the most successful, that way they appear too be solving the problem? I wonder if the league, the teams owners and huge sports networks wanna return all the billions of dollars in revenues generated from guys like mcguire, bonds, clemmons? so whose really guilty here?? if baseball holds routine blood n urine screens for all versus random checks, then the problem is solved. but the union and the league will not allow that too happen as steroids are as much a part of professional baseball as mom n apple pie.....

bonds was smart enough too realize that he had too compete against the rest of the league and he is paid too be ready too overcome that same competition. it used too be spit balls, cork bats and larger gloves, in 2011 its ephidrene, growth hormone and roids...... the experts say that steroids do not enhance athletic ability, their right they do not. but they do increase the strength and endurance of those that already have the athletic ability.... lets get it right folks..... babe ruth drank booze before the game, joe nekro sliced n doctored the ball itself in order too gain the winning edge. in 2011 one loads up a rig with deca or test and eats a few dianabol in order too even the playing field. roids are the spit balls and cork bats of the past, can you blame em?

follow the money......

What's best neutral running shoe?

can88

Hoping I could get some advice deciding on a woman's running shoe.

I had my gait analyzed on a treadmill and was told I'm about as neutral as you can get (I had previously been running in Nike Equalon's on the bad advice of a sales person which had been giving me horrible shin splints).

I run 20-40 km a week (anywhere from 5 to 15km on a given day), run almost exclusively on sidewalks and pavement, and weigh about 63kg.

I've done some research online and have come up with the Asics Nimbus, Nike Pegasus and Nike Vomero. I have preference for Nike because I use the Nike + arm band, but I do have an adapter that would allow me to attach it externally to any running shoe. I've been told New Balance makes good shoes too, but don't know too much about their models.

Would appreciate hearing some opinions.

Thanks.
...and I have a medium to slightly high arch

Answer
As you are a neutral runner, you should avoid thick sole shoes. So what i would recommend to you is the Asics Gel Kayno 14 for running shoes for women. They are widely recognized by their comfort and they fit mostly neutral runners.

Can you help me find this? Nike Free Run 2?

abehs94

I want to buy this shoe: http://www.amazon.com/Nike-Women-Free-Run/dp/B005B9KTGK/ref=pd_sim_shoe_3

and I can't seem to find the exact SAME COLOR, the link above is over priced. please help me find it, thank you!

Answer
You'll be able to find it on nike.com or ladyfootlocker.com. If it's overpriced on Amazon, expect the same from any retailer because the Nike Free Run has just recently been released. You could check Lady Foot Locker for a different shoe or something almost exactly the same. I was just actually looking at the site the other day for some new running shoes and they have a lot of really cool ones for a decent price. If you REALLY have your heart set on those, you could check eBay for a cheaper price or wait until they go on sale.

affordable european honeymoon?

Amy

I would like to plan a honeymoon to visit Rome, Venice, Florence, Paris, and Dubai. While we need to do this somewhat affordably, we don't want to stay in crap hotels or hostels. Is this even possible? Any advice on your travels to Europe?

Answer
First, stay local.
Dubai will certainly be a huge additional expense. Is far easier to travel through Italy and France then hopping that plane to Dubai. (Dubai is also one of the most expensive places to visit and although the allure of luxe and grandeur are great, just say no. We don't all need to ski in the Desert to be fulfilled in life.)
Second.
Avoid the summer holiday traveling and avoid holiday seasons. Your European air fair (which usually averages about 800/900 per person but this can sky rocket around holidays. Planning ahead can also get you great discounts. Skip the first class, international flights tend to have more comfortable seating than your average with a bit more space, most also have TV's for each seat so you'll be occupied with movies and other things for most of the nine or so hours you are in the air.
You can find comfy lodging all over France and Italy without the irritations of hostels which are often cramped and although fun for college travelers, a bit too crowded to honeymooners.
There are plenty of reasonable b&bs and rooms in family homes let out to travelers. Usually all you need to do is find one really good one and they can refer you to others.
Travel light.
Don't bring every single thing you want. Pair it down to one carry one and one luggage. Avoid too many additional fees and other complications that additional bags can cause.
Make sure you bring your own contact solution,
Sounds crazy but it's far cheaper in the states than over seas.
Avoid the rental car.
It's a costly expense that just isn't necessary. If you research ahead, you can plan train trips that can carry you from one place to another at a fraction of the cost without the irritations of finding parking and driving in a country with different laws.
For the most part, skip the shopping.
European shopping sounds fun but it adds up quickly.
Spend your days visiting historic landmarks, museums and really enjoy the country you are visiting. Visit an author or poets home, eat baguettes in front of the eiffel tower. You'll get the most outnof your trip and you'll have tons of pictures and stories. Besides, who doesn't want a glimpse of the Mona Lisa at the louvre!?
Food!
Pick one meal a day to splurge on. Visit one nice bistro or fine dining place for the day, for the other meals do what natives do! There are carts in the city peddling tons of amazing to go snacks for a good price and you'll save a bundle not paying the huge sum demanded by many of the sit down places. Stop inside a grocery store for a snack, you'll get to try all sorts of new brands and see funny things... It's a trip inside itself.
Make sure you bring along good shoes.
I know its a honeymoon but don't forget that although you want to look beautiful, bring along sensible shoes is an absolute must. In Europe you'll find walking is the most frequent activity and having to buy walking shoes out there is going to be an unnecessary expense that can easily be avoided.
Alright, I think I've given you some to some stuff to build up from.
Good luck on your travels!

Travel shoes for fifteen year old girl?!?

Q. Okay, so I am going on a European cruise that has three stops in Italy, one in Spain, and one in France. I know there is a lot of walking, so I need a good pair of shoes. (I am going a couple days early and will be in Rome for more than one day). But I am fifteen years old, in good shape, and am trying to avoid looking horribly horrendous in ugly shoes. (I know, comfort over style, but I want both?). All the websites I've found are for older people. Any suggestions? Also, is it true you shouldn't wear shorts (like jean short shorts) in Europe? Please any young travelers!

Answer
There are all kinds of walking stores and travel stores with sandals that do not look old, besides you need comfort not complete fashion and they do look better than clunky sports shoes. Avoid anything with a heel that is higher than a inch as the streets can be cobblestone. I like Bjorn shoes. Shorts shorts are not exactly advised for Italy. or Spain (particularly Spain). It is better to wear a sundress or a skirt. whne in doubt be more conservative in dress. Save revealing for the boat. To be honest, you will be doing so much, no one will notice if your feet are horrendous or not :) Have fun.

Which shoes are these?

Elizabeth

So today when I was at the store looking for nice shoes for indoor, I found practically perfect ones! Except the color, so I decided to order online. But I guess the shoes were put in random boxes or something because I wrote down Nikeair max torch 4. But, that is not the shoe I tried on.
It was more along the lines of this:
http://www.nikecheap.org/images/2012/11/19/Womens%20Nike%20Air%20Max%202011%20Hole%20Shoes%20Black%20Purple.jpg
It had the mainly black, with purple base. The shoe eyelets were separate cloth fabric type of thing (rather than the solid eye holes) that were bright pink and stood out. They were like off trail running shoes so they were a bit spikier than normal gym shoes. And they were women's (I'm pretty sure...)
That's about the best description I can give...Please help :l I don't want to go back to the store tomorrow because I have a lot to do tomorrow and it's a ways away...
http://www.basketballkicks002.com/images/griffey/new-cheap-women-air-max-jr-2011-black-purple-sale-online-80(4)_4046.jpg
The eyelets were like those... Main difference is that they aren't basketball shoes (and the bottom).

Vibram 5 finger shoe information, are there any others like them, ect.?

UW Badger

I recently bought a pair of vibram shoes. Bikila's. My dad is now interested, are there any other companies out there that make similar shoes? If so what company and how can I get them. Another question, what is the recomended use for these shoes? What types of sports/activities? Are they dependable? Any major problems? How long do they last? Thanks for all your help!

Answer
The fivefingers are good for hiking, jogging, gym, swimming, or just everyday walking. I wouldn't run a marathon in them though.

Each models of the Vibram Shoes have specific characteristics. Why not take a look at this top 10 Vibram shoes information. They talked about the Bikila ones too.
