Running Shoes ???

lopezjl137

I'm looking for a great pair of running shoes and need some advice from fellow runners. I will primarly be running on the street with a few hills so I'm looking for comfort and lightweight styles if you can please provide a link for the shoe you reccomend. Thank You

Street running, hills, comfort, lightweight. These are your given requirements for a shoe.

Do you pronate or supinate?

Heel-strike, flat, ball of foot strike?

Budget?

Wide foot, narrow, average?

Miles per week?

The challenge is that your foot is your foot. To really get a good idea of what to buy and wear, do the following.

-get the most recent Runner's World shoe evaluation issue. If it's not available in the stores, a good library will have it. Read it, review it. Some of the discussions are moderately technical, but there will be tables to look at that can give you a to-the-point idea of what shoe may work for you.

-go to a good running specialty store. The better ones will have knowledgeable runners or sports specialists that can discuss and evaluate your running style and match an appropriate shoe to it. The best ones will do a (no to low cost) gait analysis that will indicate how you run, and what shoe would match your running style.

-try the shoes on in the store. Walk, run in them, in the store.

-walk around indoors at home before taking them on the street. Don't expect them to "stretch" - modern fabrics (unless you do happen to get the odd leather shoe) provide support and don't stretch. If it hurts you while you walk around at home, believe me, they'll hurt on the road.

Sometimes when you "take them on the road," after awhile they still may hurt. When I'm switching to a new model, I sometimes go through three or four models on the way to finding one that really works well for me.

***MY CURRENT CHOICE - FOR MY FEET***

I run about 30 miles a week. Weigh 164 (5'7"). Male. Slight toe out gait. Flat strike. Race half marathons, mostly, abouyt 7:30 pace. I run on roads with hills, treadmills, crushed limestone paths.

After Nike went way too soft (like marshmallows) on cushioning, after 20 years using the Pegasus I switched to Asics gels. Currently I use the 1120. Good support; protective sole; moderate (not too much) cushioning. For a training shoe, adequately lightweight.

Does anyone recommend a running shoe with really good arch support?

Truth Hurt

I'm not much of a runner however I would like to be. When I work out in certain tennis shoes (walking/running) my arch starts to bother me. Does anyone know of a good shoe for this problem? Also, 3 years ago, I bought a nice pair of adidias tennis shoes and I just recently started having that problem with them. I was told you are supposed to get new shoes every so often. Is this maybe why these shoes now bother my arch?

Answer
For running, you'll want running shoes, not tennis shoes. Go to a running specialty store and talk to the employees there. They will be able to fit you with the right shoe for your feet. If you don't have a local running store, try the shoe dog at http://www.roadrunnersports.com Shoe dog will look for shoes based on the shape of your foot, your weight, and the amount that you run.

You'll want to replace your sneakers when they wear out, which is after about 300 - 500 miles or one year. Or whenever they start to give you pain.
