In athletics is altitude training training a form of cheating like running without shoes is in certain races.?

Back in the day middle distance runners who could afford to do so used to gain unfair advantage over their fellow contestants.
I have put this question in politics because athletics every four years is hijacked by the politicians.
Running without shoes is cheating in long distance races if you know anything about this science.

Answer
No. To suggest so would demand that all athletes live at the same elevation. For example, it would be cheating for someone who lives in Denver to train there if they were going to compete against people who like in Los Angeles. How would that be fair?

Need hiking shoe/boot advice: Low vs mid cut?

Chris

I am taking a trip to Estes Park, Colorado this summer (End of June) and am planning doing a 6-10 mile summit hike each day for 5 days. The trails I am looking at (Twin Sisters, Deer Mountain, Sky Pond..) all appear to be grade 1 trails, so there should not be too much walking on rough terrain, but there could still be some more difficult spots. I want to invest in a good hiking shoe/boot that will best support my hikes while keeping traction and staying dry. I would like to get low cut shoes so I can also wear them casually when I am not hiking (looking at the Merrell Moab Gore Tex) but some reviews say that if you are doing any summit climbs, it is smartest to go mid cut boots.

What do you recommend between mid hiking boots and low hiking shoes? I won't be carrying much weight (water, snack, etc). If you have any recommendations on a particular brand/model, please share. I am looking to spend up to $140.

Answer
You will be in the market for a mid-height boot because you are not doing summer trail running. June is still fairly early spring at Rocky Mountain National Park. From your research, I am sure that you already know that this winter was about the tenth ranking snowfall year on record. You may still find deep snowdrifts on some trails during June. I suggest that you consider hiking in other parts of Colorado that are more beautiful and less over-run with tourists than Rocky Mountain National Park.

Ask in the "camping" category about remote hiking trails in Colorado. Unfortunately, Yahoo! Answers does not have a "hiking" category. Try doing a search Yahoo! Answers for other ideas.

You should buy a good pair of gaiters to repel the wet snow from getting caught in the top of your boots. You should plan to spend $150 to $200 on lightweight, waterproof lining boots. If possible, go to REI (Boulder or Denver) and try on several for fit wearing the two pair of hiking socks that you will wear up trails. A few good brands:

Asolo
Keen
LaSportiva
Merrell
Salomon
Vasque

Vasque Breeze GTX have held-up for 2,000 miles of Rocky Mountain hiking for me. I wear them every day to work when I am not hiking. I almost never wear my low-cut trail runner shoes. The trail runners soak-up water, offer less foot protection, and no ankle support compared to my hiking boots.

Vasque Breeze GTX, $170.

Newton Running Shoes?

No Doubt

Here is some background (I apologize for its length) And for those of you who haven't heard of Newton's (http://www.newtonrunning.com/) Alright, I am a sixteen year old middle distance track athlete and Cross Country runner; I am currently a Junior in High school and have had continuous issues with my shins and running (I am currently sporting a tibial stress fracture in my right leg) My freshman year in high school I ran indoor track for the first time and had to stop halfway through the season because of stress fractures in both of my legs- I did not continue on to outdoor that year (I received proper medical attention, PT etc...) My sophomore year I ran Cross Country and Indoor Track without a hitch (besides a heart problem at the end of indoor) but only made it halfway through my Outdoor season I was diagnosed with severe shin splints in my left leg, and told to take off the rest of the season. I went to PT again and did not run again until the middle of July in which I began to train for the upcoming Cross Country season. I was running the fastest I had ever run that season and made Top Seven every meet (ran varsity) I competed in, until halfway through the season where I developed intense pain in my right leg. (writing it off as just shin splints again, and as previously discussed with my orthopedist, I took off of the rest of the season and Indoor) A few weeks before the start of outdoor track, I went back to my orthopedist to get cleared to run- they took another X-ray and saw that there was a lump on my right shin bone, as if it were swollen) The doctor determined it to be a stress fracture and sent me for a CT scan (I will discuss the results of the scan with him this Wednesday) Recently, while researching stress fracture related material I came across "Newton Running" The Newton shoes use Sir Issac Newtons third law (every reaction has an equal an opposite reaction) "natural running" and gravity to put the runner in ones optimal running form (essentially how your body would move without the cushion of shoes) The shoe focuses on a a mid/forefoot strike and a shorter stride, boasting on the idea that traditional heel striking causes damage to ones body (which I believe it does- stemming from personal experience) while landing on the forefoot with a slight lean foreword reduces the impact to the legs and saves more energy which propels you foreword. I am interested in the idea and, despite the color and high pricing, am looking to make an investment in these shoes (at the very least change to mid/forefoot striking) My question to you is, have you had any experience with the Newton shoe? Was it positive/Negative? Would you recommend it? What kinds of issues have you had with the shoe? Based on the research ive seen online(tons of raving support and life changing testimonials, read from people outside the Newton company, with only a few negative views and or anecdotes about the shoe) I would say its a good product. Any information you can give about the shoe would be greatly appreciated.
Also, would this shoe be okay to use for sprints/shorter distances? (most of the testimonials I see online are from marathon runners, and triathletes)

Answer
I don't know the answer about how good the shoes are. The domain in the question seems to be valid.
Here is the domain registry data
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/newtonrunning.com
Newton Running has a listing with BBB.
http://www.bbb.org/denver/business-reviews/shoes-retail/newton-running-in-boulder-co-90012806
So far BBB does not have enough information to give them a rating, but they do seem to confirm the address data.

Now compare that to the registry data on a typical scam site:
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/shoesif.com
That domain has even lied to its own Chinese registrar about its street address.

Does anyone know of any local running stores in Denver/Boulder area?

Q. I am looking to buy a new pair of running shoes from a loacl company, while I am back visiting my parents. I am a big supporter of smaller retailers.

Thanks for your help!

Answer
The soul shoe boutique on 13th street has pretty much every shoe you want, but a little exp.... also the boulder running company on pearl street, has probably the best selection, I think its near hwy 36..

Where is this weekend's big sale of liquidated clothes in Denver?

Commercials are constantly running on local TV, although of course now that I want to know where the sale is I haven't seen one. It's an annoyingly loud commercial with a cartoon picture of two semi trucks talking about 10 dollar shoes, 5 dollar MP3 players, etc. Where is the sale located and what are the hours?

Answer
You might try calling one of the TV stations that aired the ads. They could probably supply the information to you.

What clothes should I wear to Grand Canyon on the driving trip and for walking around there?

Im going to the Grand Canyon for the Winter and I want to wear something nice yet comfortable for the long trip and something good for walking and shopping around in.

Answer
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is at an elevation of 7,000 feet (half a mile higher than Denver), so unlike much of Arizona, they have a real winter with snow storms and sub-freezing temperatures (although winters have tended to be milder the last few years).

The weather on any given day can vary quite a bit depending on if a storm is going through. From December through February, a very nice day at the canyon might get up to the low 50s, but typically it will be in the 40s or lower and if a storm hits there may be heavy snow fall. It gets even colder after dark and temps will almost always drop well below freezing at night.

So you will want to be prepared and dress for WINTER. That means a warm heavy coat and warm hat at a minimum. Gloves, a scarf and warm boots (water-proof hiking boots are fine) are not a bad idea. They don't have a lot of snow on the ground yet, but once they do, you have to be ready for icy spots on the paths (ie: have footwear with good treads and consider getting YakTraks - see link below). For maximum comfort and flexibility, it is best to dress in layers starting with a light moisture-wicking layer, than a warm insulating layer (like a fleece) and then a water and wind proof outer shell (jacket or coat) so that you can add or remove layers depending on the current temperature or your activity.

If you plan to do any hiking (and you should), temperatures get warmer as you go deeper in the canyon (it can be like Phoenix at the bottom), but you should not attempt to go the bottom and back in a day. Always wear comfortable shoes, carry plenty of water and remember it is a lot tougher hiking up and out than hiking down.

Also be aware that there is not a lot of shopping to be done at the canyon. The Grand Canyon Association runs a bookstore at the visitor center and a few other locations (like Kolb Studio), jewelry and higher-end items can be found at El Tovar and Hopi House and a couple of the other lodges have more knick-knack souvenier items, but the whole Grand Canyon Village is not a large area and most of the activities and things to do involve being outside (although just hanging out in front of the big fireplace in the El Tovar lodge is nice too).

Have fun! The Grand Canyon is a great place to visit in winter. The crowds are low, the temps are nice for hiking and the canyon looks its prettiest under a fresh blanket of snow. But do be prepared for cold weather and possible ice and snow.
