Answer
Lot of factors to consider.
Is he going to actually run in them or is he looking for a fashion statement? His running style & his build. If you have an old pair of his running shoes try to check the bottom for how it is worn - if he used them a lot for walking also this may not show what you need to know. See if he is a heavy heel striker or runs on his toes more, check for if the wear is centered or say running from the rear outer edge to the front inner edge (this will indicate that he pronates, opposite of suppinatation). Basics- majority of shock absorption needs to go where he lands but too much can lead to instability, Different mid-sole designs especially in the transition area from the arch to the heel can help even out suppination/pronation. Heavier people need a firmer mid-sole that is not going to roll on them.
Easiest - bring a pair of his old shoes into a dedicated running/tri store, ask a salesperson to give you some ideas on what you are looking for.

I'm looking for some good running shoes. Help?

amii :)

There's SO many options. I need some shoes that are good for going on a jog outside, or on a treadmill.
I'm 16, and I just need some shoes to go for a jog in to get some exercise.
I'm not looking for anything $80, something around $40.

Shoes matter, especially if you are heavy. They protect your legs from impact stress, and they keep your legs aligned so they develop evenly, and you do not twist your ankles or put undue stress on your knees. Some cheap shoes work fine too, but they tend not to stand up as long.

Pick your shoes by trying on insane numbers of pairs of shoes and jogging around the store in them. Discount shoe stores have just as good a shoes as do athletic shoe stores... but there is no salesman to fit them. Pay no attention to whether they are men or women's shoes... it does not matter. Women's shoes have a narrower heel and lower back than men's shoes... It is your FEET you want to match, not your gender :) If you are a new runner, you will probably want shoes that are a little higher, and provide more ankle support than the ones with the cut-down around the ankle bone. Lightweight and good cushioning are features to look for, and a slight wedge is nice if you plan to be primarily running... Flatter soles are better for aerobics because you will then need cushioning under your forefoot, not just for heel strike.

You will know when you find the right pair, because they will FEEL right. Wear the socks you plan to run in. Go a half size larger that your usual size, because you will be slamming your toes into the front of ones your usual size while you run, and that is not good for your toes... or your mood about running.

SO my advice? Test drive some shoes, take plenty of time to do it, and don't even try on any that cost more than you plan to spend.

Wear decent cotton or cotton/wool socks, and if you get *any* chafing, powder your feet with gold bond. If you get shoes with a removable insole, you can dry them better between runs by taking the insole out... If you don't get a removable insole, stuff them with newspaper after every run. Dry shoes last longer,(and smell better) and so cost less :)

If you get really serious about running, then more expensive shoes start to make sense... But the shoes you will need will depend on what sort of running you get interested in. The best shoes for track, road and trail differ quite a bit, and are NOT the kind of shoes you wear in a gym for weight lifting or aerobics. When you need those shoes, the ones you buy now will be blown out. If you are losing weight, the shoes you buy now will not be the right shape after a couple months anyway (your feet will be different). Go get em then, when you need them, and know what you need them for :)
