I am a server at a casual fine dining spot. My feet and ankles are killing me... shooing pains up my legs to bottom of my toes. I need better shoes. They must be dress shoes and have a nice appearance... but I need the support of a running shoe. Help!

Answer
You need to go to the best shoe store in town, or the next largest place if you don't have a really good shoe store, and consult with someone who really knows shoes. Wouldn't hurt to go to a doctor, either. Maybe you can find out exactly what about your current shoes is causing such trouble. Can't tell from your avatar but I'm sure you're female, because men's shoes don't often cause this kind of thing. If you're wearing heels, that's probably most of the problem. You may have to go to much lower heels, or wider ones. There are dressy shoes that aren't going to kill your feet. They probably aren't going to be cheap but they're well worth it. I have some Ecco shoes, they might be worth looking at, but this isn't something you want to do online. Your feet and the prospective shoes have to be matched in person.

What is the best way to prevent Plantar Fasciitis?

When ever I run more than 10 miles my feet kill me the next day. I strecth them, warm up, wear newer running shoes but nothing seems to work. Am I doomed with this forever?

Answer
Man I feel your pain. I cannot even walk or stand in the shop for more than a few minutes. Besides your streatches, my podiatrist recomended anti-inflamatory drugs like Ibuprophen or you can ask them for a prescription for Meloxicam which is a newer replacemment for drugs like Viaoxx that were pulled from the market. Also do ice packs for 20 minutes several times a day to keep swelling down. I also purchased Orthotics (Special shoe inserts) from my podiatrist. You can get ones like Dr Scholls from the drug stores but they are soft. The ones my podiatrist sold me were $35 and are like a very hard plastic that when I have my shoes on they press into and streatch the arch to keep that tendon flexible. My problem is that the bone spur resulting from having Plantar Fasciitis is probably too large as it gets inflamed way too fast. Looks like surgery is possible in the future for me.

List three things that you might do to help improve the quality of life of these workers?

Some the goods that Canadians consume (running shoes, clothes, and some sports equipment) are made by people in other countries who are poorly paid, work long hours and work in dangerous conditions.

Answer
1). Do not purchase goods made by these workers. In many cases they do need these jobs as there aren't any other places for them to work. However if you are trying to improve the quality of life for these workers you would need to do these:

2). Build a business in the countries were these poorly paid workers are offering a higher wage than what the reap at the moment. Build the brand as a overseas improvement label and convince more developed countries to purchase your wears from you because of the increased conditions of the workers in your factories.

3). Provide other care for these workers who are now yours that they cannot receive elsewhere. They will want to work for you more than any other company in their area, but the problem will be that non of the other workers in that country would be able to purchase your goods because your costs would be so much higher than the norm.

But seriously..... The only thing that will truly improve the quality of life of these workers will be large changes in infrastructure of their countries. This will increase the number of available jobs which increases the overall economy which in turn increase the benefit to the working class. No body has ever gotten a job from a poor man and never will.

What size shoe would I wear in Converse sneakers?

Leslie Pho

I've heard many times that their sneakers run a bit large and I'm about to order a few pairs online. I'm normally a size 8 in women's. Should I go down a size or what? Please help!
Thanks so much!

Answer
First off, make sure you're ordering in women's sizes because a lot of Converse you have to pick a men's size, which is 2 sizes "smaller".
Second, I would order a half size lower. I've had a lot of Converse and when I get my normal size, I tend to have more room than what I'd like and my feet look a lot bigger. I tried on a whole size different and those made my feet feel a little squished in the toe. But I guess it depends on if you want a lot of room you want the shoes to JUST fit you.

How do you deal with your man's junk when there's no room??

Enigma

I currently live with my boyfriend and everyday he comes home with some new "gadget" that he just bought. We live in an apartment and there is no room for anymore of this crap.

He buys excess sports equipment (3 pairs of skis, 2 bikes, weights, 2 tents, 4 sleeping bags, 20 pairs of hiking/running shoes)

ANd, on top of everything else, he's a packrat and he keeps old crap (his old hockey equipment, his ski jackets from the 90's, hundreds of shirts and tops from the 90's that he has not worn in decades)

I want to live in a nice open space place but all of the corners are taken up with extra large tupperware boxes containing his junk. He won't even throw away old magazines.

I'm getting so sick, and I have to come home to 2 bikes in the livingroom and I'm so sick of living like this.
I already talked to him and he just insists he will not part with any of his precious crap.

I just need to get him to listen and see the insanity but he won't listen.

Answer
You are wasting your time, energy and love. I've been married to a pack rat for 34 years. He has only got more extreme. We have 5 acres of 'treasures'. I tried to accept and love him just the way he is, but it is still a source of major contention between us. He will never have enough, there will always be a new gadget to have.

is there such thing as a perfect running shoe? how come people say barefoot running is the best way to run?

Rafael Alb

i have a term paper all about running. and i've been wondering why all the big fish sports brands are investing large sums of money on researching to create the perfect shoe. on the other hand, the five finger vibrams and others claim that barefoot running is the best way to run. so, what's the difference?

Answer
People and companies make claims to sell their products.
Running barefoot is not the best way to run.
You need cushion and protection when running.
Racing shoes are developed to improve your performance, and they work much better than the bare foot.
Training shoes are made to protect your feet and body from the ground, and objects that will injure you.
Even cave men used protection on their feet, they did not go bare foot, while hunting and walking, and they did not have pavement, or glass and other objects to contend with.
