What kind of inserts for shoes should I buy?

indefinite

I found a pair of Sketcher's athletic shoes at my house that I bought a long time ago. Coincidentally, I've been looking for a new pair of running shoes. The only down side is that I have flat feet, and one of the reasons I bought the Sketcher's in the first place was that they had low arches. Now that I've started running in them, I'm beginning to get Shin Splints. What kind of an insert can I use to give them more support (recommend brands and types here,) or do I have to get new shoes?

Answer
First of all, the support might be worn down on your old pair of Sketchers shoes, since you have bought them a long time ago... Sketchers in general dosen't make great running shoes you should try to go to this website(http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/shoelabshoefinder/0,,s6-240-325-329-0-0-0-0-0,00.html) you enter information about ur shoe size, arches. etc and they will help you find a shoe that matches. Otherwise you can go to a sporting goods store and ask the salesmen to help you find a shoe that fits you.

The inserts that i would recommend are called Superfeet (http://www.superfeet.com/activity/running-walking.aspx) and they feel really comfterable, and supportive.

If you really want to ease the shin splints, ice your shins for 15 minutes on and off.

What brand of shoes and sandals are comfortable and stylish?

Q. I've gotten pretty bad lower back pains on several occasions going between flip flops and classic adidas shoes (flat bottom..the ones that were "in" a couple years ago) after city walking for a couple hours.

1. Converse Chucks
2. Birkenstocks (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27076326@N07/) (ugly or not?)
3. Nike
4. Other

I don't want running shoes. I like athletic inspired shoes and need good arch supports (I'm guessing...for my back)

I'm 19 so no grandma shoes either.

Answer
I have the same problems, so the kinds of shoes that I have found that are easy on my back are: Birkenstock "Papillios" or "Birkis" brands for younger, cuter sandals, Nike Air Shox for athletics and running shoes and Ecco or Merrell's for hiking boots. If you do a lot of walking and hiking like I do, then do not skimp and buy cheap shoes. These may cost more in the beginning, but you will get years of pain free walking from one pair instead of trying over and over again to find pain free shoes that look good. Try Ebay.
