Can i wear regular running shoes for a trail marathon?

I entered into a trail marathon, and I have to cross a stream and my feet will definetley be getting wet. I hear trail running shoes are heavier, I dont know if its worth buying trail shoes just for this. Any info will be helpful. Thanks

Answer
As already mentioned, it depends on the trail. Also, it depends on you.

Personally, I rarely use trail shoes in a trail race because they are generally heavier, bulkier, and stiffer than road shoes. I often race with a lightweight road shoes. Another advantage of those is that your foot is lower to the ground, lower center of gravity, which gives you more lateral stability and a better feel for the trail. Other people I know, however, will use trail shoes even when racing on a smooth dirt path. On the roads, I run in the least supportive shoe possible - I have good feet and a good stride. If you need supportive road shoes, you could benefit from a more supportive trail shoes.

Someone mentioned New Balance trail shoes. I have a pair of the NB790s that I just love. They fit like a slipper, are very light, low to the ground, and have pretty good traction.

On many hard packed trails, traction isn't an issue. However, the added traction from a trail shoe can be helpful if there's a lot of sand/loose soil or mud. Another advantage is protection from hard rocks. My feet are used to running on rocks, so that's not something I worry about, though most others do.

I wouldn't worry too much about water protection, like from a Gore-Tex lined shoe. If you're running through streams, the water is going to come in over the top of the ankle. So, lining the shoe with Gore-Tex won't help. In fact, it might even make it harder to dry out. Wear a synthetic or wool sock, and you should be fine.

I do often wear trail shoes when training. There, I don't worry about the added weight.

You can also think about using them more than just for this one race. You may fall in love with running trails and want to do a lot more.

Is it okay to use trail running shoes for track?

:D

I am running track and I recently brought trail running shoes. Will it affect me in any way if I use them as opposed to my usual running shoes for track?

Answer
Trail running shoes are pretty much the same as any other pair of running shoes, but typically are more ridged to provide more support, are water proof, and have larger treads on the bottom. If you bought them at a running store and got ones with the right amount of arch support for your feet type and they are comfortable then they should work just fine for track. The downside is that they may get hot if they are less breathable due to being water proof and they will be heavier. I would recommend testing them on a track and running the curves at different speeds to make sure they are comfortable for that, because sometimes trail shoes can be uncomfortable going fast around the tight turns on a track, because they are more ridged. I wouldn't really recommend buying trail running shoes for track, but since you already have them there really is no reason why you couldn't wear them for track as long as they are comfortable and are the right type for your feet.

Do I need trail running shoes for cross country?

I saw that there were two different types of running shoes at the store: trail running and just regular running. I'm running cross country this year, and most of the meets are on trails. Our practices though are on sidewalks and on the track. The shoes I have now are kind of heavy compared to these shoes I saw, but the label isn't for trail running. Should I have lighter shoes or heavier shoes? Also, does it matter if they're trail running?

Answer
You want two sets of shoes: one set of trainers (durable, reliable tennis shoes for practice). The other set should be spikes for those trails. Spikes are lightweight shoes with metal cleats built for running fast.

I have been hiking a lot lately and have just been using my nike running shoes, I have been struggling as I have been getting into steeper terrain, so I am needing a better hiking shoe, will trail running shoes work, or do I have to get hiking shoes?

Answer
for running, you don't want a chunky shoe that you would need for hiking.you want a lightweight, fitting shoe. for hiking, you want a comfortable, protective boot.

I've got a race tomorrow afternoon, would there really be too much of a difference if i wore racing flats instead of trail running shoes? the trails where i run aren't too crazy, if anything a bit muddy when it's wet but the weather doesnt seem to be looking bad for tomorrow, however I know cross country runners wear flats during their races because they're lighter so would it really be such a bad idea if i ditched the trail shoes this one time?

Answer
The least painful choice would probably be what you are used to trail running in.

I've been looking for some new running shoes. I really like trail running but more often than not I run on roads mainly b/c of the convienence factor. I would really like a pair of running shoes that are good on or off road. Does anybody recomend a shoe that could do this for me? Thanks a bunch!!

Answer
I personally enjoy New Balance especially the 900's series, they to me are the best. They provide a lot of cushion and comfort and most important are good for a lot of milage, they have different sizes for different shapes of feet like width and length. I have been running in them for a long time and am very pleased!

What's the difference between trail-running shoes and running shoes?

Vitavetave

I'm on a tight budget right now and the cheapest quality running shoes I came across were trail-running shoes. I usually run on cement, so would this be a bad investment?

Answer
They can be heavier, more stable, have more aggressive tread, and usually have less cushioning. Some transition to roads better than others. Some incorporate quality waterproofing.

Cement is the hardest surface on which you can run -- you'll often want more cushioning than the average trail shoe provides.

When it comes to running shoes, it's more important to find the right shoe(s) for you than just the cheapest shoe in the short-term. If you have to buy other shoes, get injured, etc., what's the cheapest shoe right now will not still be the cheapest shoe in a month or two.

I'd try to find the right shoe options for you while ignoring price a bit more, and then spend time shopping around, finding sales or coupons, older models, etc., if you need to.
