My uncle said because many Black women don't work and sit home all day. Is that really true?
UVRay--That is a bunch of crock about not having the money to buy good food because I see many women in Walmart that can afford good food and they end up buying junk food instead of veggies.

Answer
Wow people...is that all we can come up with?

To answer your question, african american women have not always been large. Back in the slavery days, black women were portrayed as such. The large, overextended, masculine, but feminine, big breasted mammy image has stayed with many (see Gone With The Wind to get an idea of what I am speaking about). In the nineteenth centrury Mammy was the quentessential house mother and maid servant. She was the face of black women in America for years. That is the first and for a long time, THE ONLY image America received of a black woman.

In much of the 18th, 19th century, and the beginning of the 20th century black women were not very large at all. Remember, most were slaves, whom did not receive very much food, and worked long and hard days -- hence there was not much room to gain weight.

As for today, most americans, and around the world have picked up several pounds due to lifestyle changes (sedentary activity, high calorie meals, etc), this includes African American women. They have picked up the lbs too. ;) Perhaps because African American women tend to be very curvacious, when they do gain the lbs it may look bigger? Who knows... but I can assure you it is not because they are not working. They do, but they are gaining weight, the same reason most people around the world are. The obesity pandemic has taken flight.

UV Ray: I concur with some of what you mentioned. One of the most sensible answers of the evening.

FYI: I am a very petite African American female. Actually shaped like what many would consider "Asian", 5"1 and 108 lbs. Size 6 shoe in women, 4 in men. Pretty small....so see, we are out there. ;)

I would like to add something else. I am currently studying to become a Registered Dietitian and we speak about food and culture quite often. The african american culture -- as a whole- has been taught to eat a certain way. These food ways are not conducive to good health at all. Diet is a lifestyle choice, and is often hard to change. It requires gut and motivation. Genetics play a large role as well -- as to how the body deals with and stores fat in response to stress, sedentary lifestlyles, and high calorie meals. I disagree with the perm deal/sweating out hair below -- as it does not apply to all. I am black -- have no perm, hair is silky and long-- and am fit, exercise, eat well, and look fine. I know plenty of black females whom have natural hair (meaning no perm), whom walk, jog, run every morning, and see the importance of exercise. Its elementary to generalize -- let's grow out of that habit, shall we people? There are several reasons why you see obese people today. Its a complicated issue. Benjamin if you want more details, I don't mind sharing.

What are a good cross country shoes?

Im going to be a sophomore btw. Im having trouble figuring out whats suitable. At practices we mostly run on dirt trails, sidewalks or roads, or through grass depending on the route. Also i have really small feet so I normally tend to buy kid sizes but i can pull off a women's 5 depending on the brand.
Can anybody recommend me shoes? I know Asics and Mizunos are great brands but is Nike alrightt ? I can great deal on Nike shoes so yeah.

Answer
I wouldn't recomend a specific brand, because everyone's feet are different. But going to a running store where they can look at how you run and your feet is a good idea. They can give you selections og shoes that would work with your foot type. plus sometimes they can have special sizes made for your smaller feet. Be careful when picking a shoe, the wrong shoe can lead to injury.
