What do you think should happen to this mother?
This mother's child (toddler) was found wondering on an interstate in Indiana only a soiled diaper, shirt and no shoes. Thank goodness a by passer called it in and stopped and retrieved the child before he was hit by a passing car. Its been on the news and very heartbreaking. How could a mother be so careless and let her toddler run free while she is asleep? I will have nightmares about this.
Thanks Kathy for the web site been reading this with interest. SHOCKING.
The way she looked ...she must of been strung out on something. She looked like death warmed over. Really a sad situation.

I used to live in a apartment complex and one morning while looking out the window, i saw a little boy about two yrs old and another boy about six wondering around. They were only wearing t-shirts and the youngest one had a diaper on hanging to his knees the six yr old had no under wear on at all! Shocked i called the police department. They found out the lived right across the street from me but the thing that made it so bad was it was early morning and it had been raining all night. When the police officer knocked on the door the mother brought the kids in and shut the door in the man's face! I was thinking "lock that B*tch up"! I'm sure that the oldest boy opened the front door but the mother should have been awake already. Poor parenting, it's terrible and can break your heart but it's everywhere! They should make better laws for the safety of children.

Any suggestion for winter clothes in Michigan?

dk

I'm going to study at Michigan State University this fall. I know it is pretty cold in the winter. So, what clothes and footwears are adequate for the winter season?

Answer
I'm assuming you're from a milder climate...

- winter boots with good treads (for icy sidewalks) - you can get water-proof spray if they don't come already water-proofed
- sneakers of some sort, and closed-toe shoes in general
- thick socks for when you'll be outside for a while (if you're female, I suggest knee-highs, thigh-highs, and tights)
- jeans, and long pants in general (ski pants only if you'll be playing in the snow all day)
- t-shirts (long-sleeved and short-sleeved) for wearing under other shirts/hoodies/sweaters, and to wear during warmer seasons
- sweaters, light-weight and heavier (depends on how cold it is out on any given day)
- hoodies (worn 24/7 by college co-eds everywhere) - zip-ups work well, too... all you really need to "fit in" is a pair of jeans and a school hoodie : ) Heck, that's what I'm wearing right now, and I haven't been in college for quite a while now.
- a good looking, wool coat for when you need to look nice
- a knock-around winter coat (maybe quilted, or one of those puffy ones, or one more like a ski jacket) for everyday, random wear - like running to class and such, going to a football game, or playing in the snow (suggestion - keep a pair of gloves in the pockets)
- thick, warm gloves (preferably ones snow won't stick to) for when you'll be outside for a while or when it's close to or below freezing
- thinner gloves for less cold days, or for driving, or when you'll only be outside for a minute
- (random suggestion that isn't clothing - hand lotion with aloe so your hands don't get all rough, chapped, or bloody)
- a thicker scarf for when you'll be outside for a while, or when it's brutally cold
- a thinner scarf for a little warmer days, or when you won't be outside long
- earmuffs, just in case you'll be outside for a while in very cold weather, or when it drops below freezing (don't risk frost bite, please)
- a hat of some sort (most of your body heat is lost through your head)... you can always put your hood up, too

Tip: Layering is your best friend. It can be freezing outside, but buildings can be overheated. Or, you can get warmer if you're doing something physical outside (playing around in the snow, tossing a ball around, running, etc)

It might be tough at first, but you're the only one who can know for sure what clothing works for you. Some people handle the cold better than others. And, when it gets bitterly cold, remember it could always be worse - you could be even further north, or have to deal with lake effect snow.
