Running shoes are designed **only** for moving "forward", but volleyball shoes are designed to move in all directions, with much better lateral tracking and support, and can help you change direction within spit of a second.
Volleyball shoes are much lighter, can provide extra protection to you toes. If after two three hours of playing you feel sore in your toes, you know you would need a pair of volleyball shoes.
To make them lighter in weight, most volleyball shoes are made specifically for indoor play. They might have open vent under the arc, the sole, and/or at some other spots (if you can find a pair of volleyball shoes at your local store, remove the padding and you can see through from the bottom). Walking outside would also collect dirt into the out sole and affect tracking.
Make sure you don't wear them outside of the gym.

Yes, you can use running shoes to play volleyball, however also remember that shoes are designed for their specifics...ie running shoes made to support your foot while running etc. And since volleyball & running are completely different the shoes are made different. Volleyball shoes provide lateral support and so on and so forth...gearded toward what volleyball players need.
If you are just playing to play, sure. It's not biggie...but if you are going to play competitive I'd say try and get volleyball shoes. It'll provide you with more stability overall while playing volleyball.
Adidas, Nike, Asics, Kaepa, Mizuno...they all have volleyball shoes. However, I personally reccomend Mizuno. I've had Nike volleyball shoes before & Adidas....but I prefer Mizuno's now. Plus, Mizuno has all sorts of different shoes for you to pick from (ie Wave spike, etc.)
