Jess

I just got my first proper job in retail 9-5 monday-friday and i stand all day. I only get to sit on break (half hour) and I'm so much pain in my feet by the end of the day. I have proper sturdy good quality shoes so thats not a problem.

besides having good shoes is there anything else I can do to manage the pain?

the pain is on the bottom of the outside of my foot running from from the top of my toes to the bottom of my heel.

Answer
Hello,

First of all I am sorry that you have this pain/soreness, it must be frustrating.

There are many factors for foot pain, the most common one is bad footwear and a combination of specific foot bio-mechanics which are faulty, like flat feet or over pronation.

Regarding your current pain, in order to diagnose you better please answer these questions:

1) Are you active in sports?
2) Which part of the foot hurts the most?
3) What kind of shoes you usually wear?
4) Do you have high or low arches?
5) Is it painful to the touch?
6) Do you feel more pain first thing in the morning?
7) Any swelling or redness?

Here are a few things you can do right now:

1) Ice your feet at least 4 times a day, either by applying ice directly or by rolling a frozen bottle under your heel and arch when you sit down.

2) Rest and elevate your feet whenever you can.

3) Massage and stretch your feet in the morning and evening

4) Wear good supportive shoes around the house as well and never walk in flip flops or unsupportive shoes.

Again, if you can answer my questions I would be happy to assist you further.

What would be considered a neutral run?

I see running shoes that say they are good for neutral runs, but how would you know if you are a neutral runner or not? What type of running shoes should I get if I have a 6:15 mile?

Answer
You are a neutral runner if you don't under-pronate (feet roll out) or over-pronate (feet roll in). The height of your foot arch usually determines this. If you wet your feet and walk on a piece of paper, it will give you an idea of the height of your arch. A high arch will leave less of an imprint on the paper and usually indicates under-pronation. A low arch or flat foot will leave more of an imprint on the paper and usually indicates over-pronation. A neutral foot will be somewhere in between.

To be sure, it is best to visit a good running shop and have them examine your feet. Bring your old shoes with you as how they wear is a good indicate of the type of runner you are. There are shoes designed for each type of runner.

Good luck!
