Answer
Almost every legitimate mystery shopping company is a member of the MSPA -a global trade association for mystery shopping companies
http://www.mysteryshop.org/searchmspa/search.php
Search under Locations/Regions served by Company for Rhode island. The companies might actually be based in other states, but they conduct mystery shohps in your state
Then contact the companies directly to see if they are accepting any new shoppers. Most companies will have a website and they often have details on the site on how you can be considered

But you also have to be realistic. Most companies have many more shoppers than jobs, and you are never going to get rich as a mystery shopper. An average shop only pays $5-10 ($25 is the most I ever made and that was for a 5 hour assignment, not even minimum wage) and if it's for a restaurant or hotel, you don't get paid at all, you just get free food or a free stay, though you always pay out of pocket and don't get reimbursed until 30 days after you submit your evaluation form and receipts. So you might get a free night stay at a Hilton hotel but the room will cost you $250 out of pocket and the shop doesn't pay for incidentals (travel costs to the hotel, parking, tips, food, drinks) and it will take you 30 days to get that $250 back. So you have to wonder if it's worth it. Or is it worth doing a shop at Staples or Office Depot that won't pay you anything but will reimburse you for up to $5 on what you buy? If you don't need any pens or scotch tape, then is that shop really worth it to you? And if you are in an area with a lot of registered shoppers and not many jobs you will be lucky to get 1 job every two months

Watch out for scams. Real mystery shopping companies DO NOT advertise on Craiglslist or most job boards for new shoppers. Real mystery shopping companies NEVER make you pay to register with them or pay a monthly fee. And real mystery shopping companies NEVER send you checks upfront or ask you to wire money through Western Union or Moneygram - these are Nigerian money laundering scams issuing counterfeit checks and you could end up arrested for bank fraud as this woman found out

You should also look in your yellow pages for Market Research agencies and call to see if they hold focus groups. Focus groups pay more than mystery shopping - generally $50-75 per group. But you have to meet certain criteria depending on who the company's target market is. For example I went to one for athletic shoes and they had us fill out a form with our weekly workout schedule (if any), the type of shoes we currently wore, we had to make a list of as many athletic shoe brands we could think of in 2 minutes, then fill out our age, race, education level, marital status and income level. There were about 100 of us there and they took everyone's forms, then about 20 minutes later only called 15 of us in for the focus group - the other 85 people were just given $5 cash for their time and told they weren't needed.

What should I take to basic training?

Dracy

I'm going to basic at Ft. Sill Oklahoma and I keep hearing different things to take with me and what to leave home. My good friend is in the military and basically told me to bring the clothes on my back, debit card, cell phone and charger, and cut your hair the day before you ship out. Anyone got any other helpful advice I sure would appreciate it. Oh and my recruiter doesn't know how to pick up a phone when ever I call. Thanks
