Answer
See your health care provider as soon as possible (podiatrist or neurosurgeon), for consultation. There are many causes of foot pain, but when most people talk about foot pain they are describing symptoms that cause pain under the "ball of the foot." When foot pain occurs under the ball of the foot, the medical term is metatarsalgia.

There are many other causes of foot pain in other parts of the foot. If your symptoms are not under the ball of the foot, try the following resources to find an answer to your problem:

Toe pain and bunions.
Arch pain.
Heel pain.
Posterior heel pain.

Metatarsalgia occurs in the region between the arch and the toes. The medical term for foot pain, metatarsalgia, comes from the name of the bones that are in this part of the foot: the metatarsals. The metatarsals are long bones at the base of each toe. Sometimes pressure on the ends of the metatarsal bones causes symptoms in the ball of the foot. This can be due to constricting foot wear or high heel shoes. If you have under the ball of your foot, try wearing shoes that have a wider toe box.

A burning sensation on the soles of your feet can arise from any number of causes, from ill-fitting shoes to diabetes. The most serious cause is peripheral neuropathy--damage to the leg nerves--often from diabetes or alcoholism and less commonly from vitamin deficiencies or lead poisoning. A rare disorder called erythromelalgia increases blood flow to the hands and feet and can also produce a searing sensation.
Some people experience fiery feet because they're sensitive to a chemical in the inner lining of their shoes (particularly some types of athletic shoes). Try changing footwear to see if the problem subsides. If not, see your physician to rule out medical causes.

I hope this helps you. And good luck.

need help finding wide toe, narrow heel shoes?

Amy

hi. I have a lot of trouble finding shoes that fit - wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I have wide toes and bunions (wide ball of foot), but wearing "wide" shoes leaves too much room on the heel. I'd also love better arch support. Thanks in advance for your answers!

I have the same problem and it takes me forever to find shoes that fit well. Usually my heels slip and my toes are cramped.

If you're looking for running shoes/tennis shoes, look for shoes specifically for narrow heels and with a wider toe box.

Asics are pretty good for that foot shape. The GT-2130 model is pretty good. I have tried them on and am considering getting that for my next running shoe.

New Balance makes a specific type of "last" or shoe pattern for people with narrow heels and wide toes, called the "SL-2 last". Look for shoes with that are SL-2, e.g. the New Balance 882 model is good if you are a neutral runner with narrow heel and wide toes, while the 1011, 1123, 817, and 507 models provide more motion control if you're an over-pronator/have flat arches along with the narrow heel and wide toes. I once had the 1011 (only for a few weeks before the pair was stolen from me), they provided a very stable, cushioned run however they were somewhat heavy/plodding.
Since you mentioned wanting arch support, I'm thinking the 882 would be better for you (you have higher arches?)

Regarding regular (non-athletic) shoes, I sometimes put moleskin in the back heel area to reduce slippage. Often I resort to wearing socks with extra-thick bottom cushioning (they help prevent blisters/slipping in the heel). I prefer to wear shoes too big/too wide versus shoes that cramp my toes personally.

I hope this helps.
